Natural History And Evolution Of An Elevational Generalist, The Cinereous Conebill (Conirostrum Cinereum), Andrea N. Chavez, Chandresekhar Natarajan, Jay F. Storz, Angela Fago, Christopher C. Witt
Biology ETDs
Elevational generalism is relatively rare in the tropical Andes Mountains, likely owing to the inherent requirements of enduring a high degree of climatic zonation and coping with hypoxic stress. The Cinereous Conebill (Conirostrum cinereum) appears to be an exception, and inhabits a continuous elevational distribution that spans over 4,500 m. Two subspecies, cinereum and fraseri, are restricted to high elevations and may be isolated, whereas the third and most widespread, littorale, occurs continuously along the western slope of the Andes from 0 to over 4,500 m. First, we aim to characterize the morphology, genetics, and climatic …

Lift Mysterious Veil Of Soil Virus:'Dark Matter'of Soil Biota, Wang Guanghua
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on the Earth, they play important roles in altering their host community structures, driving global biogeochemical cycles, and promoting the biological evolution. Viruses are commonly regarded as'dark matter'of biota. Recently, the researches on viral ecology are progressing rapidly in marine environments, while the corresponding studies in terrestrial ecosystem especially in soil environments were largely lagged. In this paper, the recent research progress on soil virus, such as viral abundance, morphological and genetic diversity, research methodology, and ecological functions were briefly reviewed from the viewpoint of ecology. The purpose of this paper aims at …

Current Status And Development Trend Of Soil Microbial Biogeography, Chu Haiyan, Wang Yanfen, Shi Yu, Lyu Xiaotao, Zhu Yongguan, Han Xingguo
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Soil microbial biogeography is to study the spatial distribution pattern of soil microorganisms and their changes over time. Soil microbial biogeographical study can help to find out unknown biological resources in soils, to understand the mechanisms of formation and maintenance of microbial diversity in soils, and to predict the evolutional direction of terrestrial ecosystem functioning. Since the vast majority of soil microorganisms cannot be cultivated and the techniques for microbial community analysis are limited, soil microbial biogeography has lagged behind the biogeography of plants and animals for a long time. Since twenty-first century, the breakthrough of high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics …

An Investigation Of Geography And Climate Induced Distresses Patterns On Airfield Pavements At Us Air Force Installations, L K. Sahagun, M Karakouzian, A Paz-Cruz, H De La Fuente Mella
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
This study investigated climate induced distresses patterns on airfield pavements at US Air Force installations. A literature review and surveys of Pavement Condition Index indicated that the predominant factor contributing to the development of pavement distress was climate. Results suggested that, within each type of pavement distress, a geographic pattern exists which is strongly correlated to conventional US climate zones. The US Air Force Roll-Up Database, housing over 50,000 records of pavement distress data, was distilled using a process designed to combine similar distresses while accounting for age and size of samples. The process reduced the data to a format …

On The Cusp Of Invisibility: The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Marginalized Students, And Institutional Spaces, Romeo Garcia
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation considers the potential for decolonial possibilities for and democratic participation of students in three rhetorical and institutional spaces: the writing center, the classroom, and the archives. The Lower Río Grande Valley, the site of the study, is located at the Southernmost end of Texas, and is situated between the almost 2,000-mile-long geopolitical border spanning from Brownsville, Texas to San Diego, California and the internal checkpoints that run parallel to and 70 miles north of the border. The Lower Río Grande Valley has remained a Mexican American cultural province and zone despite six phases of colonization. Little is known …

Collaboration for groups with members who are disconnected by geography or time is convenient for many reasons, but remains a challenge due to time zone differences, network congestion, and the attenuation of nonverbal communication cues. Virtual collaborators engaging in creative work often deal with these challenges, even more so when tasked with expressing their emotions to distant partners.
This study seeks to determine the social factors and tools that impact the quality of an online creative collaboration. Members of the Kompoz.com music composition community were surveyed to solicit projects that had the potential to be optimal collaborations. Judges listened to …
The Effect Of The Hope Scholarship Program On Interstate Migration, Can Zhou
The Effect Of The Hope Scholarship Program On Interstate Migration, Can Zhou
Dissertations - ALL
The HOPE scholarship program, created by the state of Georgia in 1993, is the first large scale, merit-based higher educational scholarship program in the United States. In this research, I use border analysis and difference-in-differences estimates to test the hypothesis that the HOPE scholarship program attracts interstate education migration from Georgia’s neighboring states. My results support my hypothesis. I find that border areas in Georgia attract high school seniors from the adjacent areas in border states that do not have the HOPE scholarship program. In addition, I use the IPUMS dataset to provide further analysis to the effect of the …

Buried Alive: Urban Stream Burial In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Tanner Vincent
Student Papers and Reports
In the decades between 1913 and 1967, Silver and Coldbrook Creeks vanished from the urban landscape in the rapidly growing city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. A U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) map of Grand Rapids from 1914 shows both Silver and Coldbrook Creeks emptying into the Grand River west of their headwaters south and north of Reeds Lake, respectively. By 1967, the year a topographical map of Grand Rapids was created at a scale as fine as that of the 1914 map, both Silver and Coldbrook Creek had been erased from the landscape of Grand Rapids. A closer look at the …

Woody residence time (τw) is an important parameter that expresses the balance between mature forest recruitment/growth and mortality. Using field data collected from the literature, this study explored the global forest τw and investigated its influence on model simulations of aboveground biomass (AGB) at a global scale. Specifically, τw was found to be related to forest age, annual temperature, and precipitation at a global scale, but its determinants were different among various plant function types. The estimated global forest τw based on the filed data showed large spatial heterogeneity, which plays an important role in model simulation of AGB by …

The Covenant Of Deuteronomy And The Study Of The Ancient Israelite Jurisprudence, Kenneth C. Anyanwu
The Covenant Of Deuteronomy And The Study Of The Ancient Israelite Jurisprudence, Kenneth C. Anyanwu
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
“Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. (Psalm 119: 1 – 3)
All through the ages, law and justice has been a condition for a smooth, egalitarian and peaceful society. A society devoid of law and justice is not only unthinkable but a bedlam of chaos, anarchy and disorder. No wonder the ancient Greek philosopher and sage, Aristotle said, “At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; …

An Analysis Of New Small High Schools' On-Time Graduation Rates In New York City, Nathan Dudley
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Beginning in 2002, with the election of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City’s Department of Education undertook an unprecedented overhaul of the largest school district in the United States. Over the next 10 years the Department of Education closed more than 25 large, underperforming high schools, and created almost 200 new, small high schools, which, by the end of the decade, were serving approximately 30% of public high school students in the city. The first classes began graduating in 2006, and many of the “New Small Schools” graduated more students on time than many of the large schools they had …
Uncovering Meaning In Montessori Teachers’ Lived Experiences Of Cosmic Education As A Tool For Social Justice, John Allen Branch
Uncovering Meaning In Montessori Teachers’ Lived Experiences Of Cosmic Education As A Tool For Social Justice, John Allen Branch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This inquiry focused on the lived experiences of Montessori teachers in implementing Montessori’s Cosmic Education as a tool for social justice in their classrooms in order to more fully understand Cosmic Education’s meaning, purpose, and practice. The researcher also sought to understand how Cosmic Education could be an effective pedagogy of place, providing historical and social contexts in which students may develop and grow. The study used a post-intentional phenomenological design (Vagle, 2014), and was based on a series of interviews with five Montessori teachers from different classroom age levels. The data were analyzed using poetic inquiry through the form …
Precipitation Patterns And Fungal Community Succession In A Seasonally Dry Secondary Tropical Savanna, Sara R. López-Rodríguez
Precipitation Patterns And Fungal Community Succession In A Seasonally Dry Secondary Tropical Savanna, Sara R. López-Rodríguez
Biology ETDs
In the northwestern part of South America, seasonally dry forests have undergone extensive conversion to savannas to support ranching and agriculture. The combination of fire and vegetation removal employed for clearing, together with extensive agricultural practices, often lead to loss of soil fertility. This results in land that is no longer useful for agriculture and on which historical forests are unable to regenerate. This study examined the effects of common agricultural practices on soil fungal communities by simulating the effects of fire followed by plant removal. The goal was to determine whether common practices have rapid effects on soil communities, …
Cooperating Teachers' Experiences Mentoring Preservice Teachers, David H. Lewis
Cooperating Teachers' Experiences Mentoring Preservice Teachers, David H. Lewis
Special Education ETDs
Abstract
Recent literature was reviewed to locate articles with perspectives and attitudes of cooperating teachers who work with preservice teachers at school sites in coordination with institutions that have teacher preparation programs in general and/or special education. The results showed an emphasis in reporting the external aspects of being a cooperating teacher such as the daily activities, and little was reported about the internal aspects of being a cooperating teacher such as personal experience and rationale for working a preservice teacher into a classroom. This led to the research question “What do cooperating teachers report as their experiences while mentoring …
Incorporating Service Learners In Community Engaged Research: Experiential Application Of Social Science Perspectives And Research Methods, Christine Marston, Kyle Ann Nelson
Incorporating Service Learners In Community Engaged Research: Experiential Application Of Social Science Perspectives And Research Methods, Christine Marston, Kyle Ann Nelson
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
Community engaged scholarship and service learning pedagogy are increasing trends in higher education (Reardon, 1998; Fitzgerald et al., 2012; Campus Compact, 2013a; Fuller, 2013) and yield synergistic value to the three-pronged mission of higher education of teaching, service and research (Boyer, 1990; Furco, 2010; Stanton, 2012; Fitzgerald et al., 2012; CCEC, 2013). Engaged social science faculty offer meaningful contributions to the community and their work serves to enhance university-community partnerships (Stanton, 2007; Furco, 2010; Klein et al., 2012). Students participating in service learning in these fields can “acquire first-hand knowledge” as well as develop social science skills and perspectives through …
Bodies As Living, Twirling Sacrifices: Performing Black Girlhood, Liturgical Dance, And The Black Church Tradition, Brianna Heath
Bodies As Living, Twirling Sacrifices: Performing Black Girlhood, Liturgical Dance, And The Black Church Tradition, Brianna Heath
Cultural Studies Capstone Papers
The purpose of this study is to investigate liturgical dance in the black church tradition as a gendered space. I argue that black girls perform their sexuality as ascribed to hetero-patriarchal ideology—as preached within the black church—through liturgical dance. This ideology akin to politics of respectability separates the sacred from the secular which causes a tension. This tension shows up in the hyper-ness of liturgical dancing. This study discusses this by contextualizing liturgical dance within a history of black concert dance and embodied practices of resistance. This study frames liturgical dance within the black dance tradition, black feminist studies, and …

Revolution In The Divided City: The Plebeian Social Movement, Secessions, And Anti-Government In The Roman Republic During The 5th Century Struggle Of The Orders, Christopher Schley Saladin
Classics: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
This paper examines the formation of the plebeian movement and government in the Roman Republic during the 5th Century BC of the Struggle of the Orders. The Struggle of the Orders was a political conflict between the plebeian and patrician classes of Rome that lasted from the 5th-3rd Centuries BC of the Republic. Most of this period is shrouded in legend, but later Roman historians provide evidence that suggests a major social and political revolution occurred during the early years of this struggle. Using kernels of evidence from these histories, namely that of the 1st …

The Relationship Between Sex And Territorial Behavior In The San Cristóbal Lava Lizard (Microlophus Bivittatus), Meghan N. Koenig
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
The purpose of this study is to learn more about the territorial behavior of the San Cristóbal lava lizard (Microlophus bivittatus). It was hypothesized that, due to competition for mates, competition would be higher amid individuals of the same sex than between individuals that were opposite sexes. This hypothesis was not supported by the data collected, as females were observed interacting more with other females than other males but males were observed interacting more with females than other males. This is likely a result of a sex ratio of two females to one male and the territory structure of the …
