Ecological Niche Modeling Of The Genus Papio, Amanda J. Fuchs Aug 2017

Ecological Niche Modeling Of The Genus Papio, Amanda J. Fuchs

Theses and Dissertations

Ecological niche modeling investigates how climatic variables have influenced taxonomic diversity in Papio. Models performed well suggesting climatic variables influence the distribution of baboon species. Niche overlap among all possible pairs of taxa determined that species exhibited significantly different niches. The results of these models support a parapatric speciation scenario.

Microbiome Analysis Of Two Sympatric Fungus-Gardening Ants, Trachymyrmex Septentrionalis And Trachymyrmex Turrifex, Mattea Allert Aug 2017

Microbiome Analysis Of Two Sympatric Fungus-Gardening Ants, Trachymyrmex Septentrionalis And Trachymyrmex Turrifex, Mattea Allert

Biology Theses

The fungus gardening-ant system is considered a complex, multi-tiered symbiosis between the ants, their fungus, and their corresponding microbes. We examine the bacterial microbiome of Trachymyrmex septentrionalis and Trachymyrmex turrifex ants and their corresponding fungus, using 16S rRNA, over a large geographical region to determine if horizontal transmission was occurring. The goals of this study was to determine how the ant microbiome was transmitted and how the fungus microbiome was transmitted. We determined that the microbiomes of T. septentrionalis and T. turrifex ants were different because of the species, while the microbiomes of T. septentrionalis and T. turrifex fungi were …

In Situ Elemental Characterisation Of Marine Microplastics By Portable Xrf., Andrew Turner Aug 2017

In Situ Elemental Characterisation Of Marine Microplastics By Portable Xrf., Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The performance of a portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer configured in a test stand and coupled to a laptop has been evaluated for the determination of various elements (including Br, Cd, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) in beached microplastics. Under laboratory conditions, analysis of samples that covered the 3-mm x-ray beam returned concentrations that, on average, were within 20% of concentrations determined by ICP following acid digestion. Analysis of progressively smaller offcuts (to <1mm) resulted in corresponding concentrations that were comparable to those determined in original samples but errors and detection limits that progressively increased. When the configuration was deployed in situ with two operators, up to 35 microplastics counted for 60s each could be processed per hour. Advantages of immediate measurements include the development of an iterative study strategy, rapid compliance-evaluation, and identification of specific materials for further characterisation or study in the laboratory.

Using The 500 M Modis Land Cover Product To Derive A Consistent Continental Scale 30 M Landsat Land Cover Classification, Hankui Zhang, David P. Roy Aug 2017

Using The 500 M Modis Land Cover Product To Derive A Consistent Continental Scale 30 M Landsat Land Cover Classification, Hankui Zhang, David P. Roy

GSCE Faculty Publications

Classification is a fundamental process in remote sensing used to relate pixel values to land cover classes present on the surface. Over large areas land cover classification is challenging particularly due to the cost and difficulty of collecting representative training data that enable classifiers to be consistent and locally reliable. A novel methodology to classify large volume Landsat data using high quality training data derived from the 500 m MODIS land cover product is demonstrated and used to generate a 30 m land cover classification for all of North America between 20°N and 50°N. Publically available 30 m global monthly …

Effects Of Inclusion Of Contemporary Artists/Artworks Within The Core Knowledge Curriculum To Increase Student Engagement, Paula Vann

Action Research Projects

The classroom action research project was initiated when I observed in my classroom that inclusion of contemporary artists and their work influenced student engagement in the creation and completion of art assignments. Twelve fifth grade students participated in the study: six boys and six girls. The students completed an expressive self-portrait using materials of their choice after having been exposed to an art historical artist and four contemporary portrait artists. The students completed a pre-unit survey and a post unit survey. In process artwork was photographed to document engagement. Personal observation and a rubric were also used to evaluate engagement. …

This arts-based action research study was created to examine the effects of artmaking on the development of student-peer relationships. Conducted through a four month analysis, 25 fifth grade students, from the same class, were examined through survey questionnaire, critique and interpretation process. Through the course of this study, this research investigation will study 10 randomly selected students, from the same class of inquiry, to examine their artistic process in relation to the development or strengthening of student-peer relationships. From the 10 focal participants, I analyzed sketchbook documentation, artwork with written description, and recorded semi structured interviews. This study will explore …

The Influence Of School Segregation On Students’ Educational Achievement, Lea Vivian Aug 2017

The Influence Of School Segregation On Students’ Educational Achievement, Lea Vivian

Perspectives

This literature review evaluates how race, geographical location, and socioeconomic status impacts a student’s educational achievement. These variables affect educational success, which is impacted by the history of housing and racial segregation in the United States. The discussion will include why schools are segregated and how this has an impact on a student’s education by looking at different studies and theories such as the Black Culture theory and the Acting White Hypothesis. Even in desegregated schools, “tracking” separates and further segregates races in the educational system. The literature review concludes with a summary of the findings, importance, and future research …

Imagining The North: Nordic Art In Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture And Criticism, Nicholas Kenton Parkinson Aug 2017

Imagining The North: Nordic Art In Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture And Criticism, Nicholas Kenton Parkinson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation studies the reception of Nordic painting in nineteenth-century France. I argue that the notion of so-called Scandinavian Art in nineteenth-century French literature, commonly referred to as l’art scandinave, l’école scandinave, or les écoles scandinaves , and encompassing artists coming from the countries that in the present day are known as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, during across the second half of the nineteenth century, and solidified in usage and meaning at the end of the 1880s. The followering study presents a chronological account of how French writings on Nordic painting changed during this period, beginning with an introductory …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

This article provides concise documentation of the ongoing retreat of glaciers, along with the implications that the ice loss presents, as well as suggestions for geoscience educators to better convey this story to both students and citizens. We present the retreat of glaciers—the loss of ice—as emblematic of the recent, rapid contraction of the cryosphere. Satellites are useful for assessing the loss of ice across regions with the passage of time. Ground-based glaciology, particularly through the study of ice cores, can record the history of environmental conditions present during the existence of a glacier. Repeat photography vividly displays the rapid …

Case Study Of Distance Learning At University Of Najran, Mahdi Mohammed Saleh Alqotami Alzamanan Aug 2017

Case Study Of Distance Learning At University Of Najran, Mahdi Mohammed Saleh Alqotami Alzamanan

Dissertations

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the need for distance-learning programs in the universities has been gaining importance. Najran, the area in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which this study addressed, has been the target of serious attacks against both the government and the civilian population in a recent conflict with Yemen. Because all areas of Najran have been targeted, including educational institutions, the ability for students to attend the university in recent years has been severely curtailed. While conflict prompted the study, there were, and are, other reasons for promoting distance learning in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The …

Accommodating Mixed-Severity Fire To Restore And Maintain Ecosystem Integrity With A Focus On The Sierra Nevada Of California, Usa, Dominick A. Dellasala, Richard L. Hutto, Chad T. Hanson, Monica L. Bond, Timothy Ingalsbee, Dennis C. Odion, William L. Baker

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Existing fire policy encourages the maintenance of ecosystem integrity in fire management, yet this is difficult to implement on lands managed for competing economic, human safety, and air quality concerns. We discuss a fire management approach in the mid-elevations of the Sierra Nevada, California, USA, that may exemplify similar challenges in other fire-adapted regions of the western USA. We also discuss how managing for pyrodiversity through mixed-severity fires can promote ecosystem integrity in Sierran mixed conifer and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws) forests. To illustrate, we show how coarse-filter (landscape-level) and complementary fine-filter (species-level) approaches can enhance forest management …

Flume Tests On Fluvial Erosion Mechanisms In Till-Bed Channels, Peter Ashmore Aug 2017

Flume Tests On Fluvial Erosion Mechanisms In Till-Bed Channels, Peter Ashmore

Geography & Environment Publications

Semi-alluvial stream channels eroded into till and other glacial sediments are common in areas of extensive glacial deposition such as the Great Lakes region and northern interior plains of North America. The mechanics of erosion and erosional weakness of till results in the dominance of fluvial scour and spontaneous fracture at planes of weakness under shearing flow. There have been few controlled tests looking at erosional mechanisms and resistance of till in river channels. We subjected small blocks of till to unidirectional flows in a laboratory flume to measure the threshold shear stress for erosion and observed the erosion mechanics. …

Exploring The Empirical Relationship Between Civic Agriculture And Community Resilience, Beth Joanna Person-Michener Aug 2017

Exploring The Empirical Relationship Between Civic Agriculture And Community Resilience, Beth Joanna Person-Michener

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Smaller-scale, qualitative and mixed method studies indicate that civic agriculture generates positive, local-level social change, specifically by increasing social, human and economic capital. These social benefits are also identified as some of the crucial components needed for community resilience to disasters. However, literature directly linking civic agriculture to community resilience is sparse and there is little if any research explicitly examining a relationship between civic agriculture and community resilience. This study lends national scope and an empirical examination of evidence for a positive relationship between civic agriculture and community resilience along the applicable domains of social, human and economic capital …

Retail Bottle Pricing At The Border: Evidence Of Cross-Border Shopping, Fraudulent Redemptions, And Use Tax Evasion, Ben J. Niu Aug 2017

Retail Bottle Pricing At The Border: Evidence Of Cross-Border Shopping, Fraudulent Redemptions, And Use Tax Evasion, Ben J. Niu

Economics Faculty/Staff Publications

This paper examines the pattern of retail prices for deposit eligible goods near Michigan’s borders. Michigan’s unique bottle redemption system and lower sales tax generate incentives for various potentially illegal household responses. Such incentives and behavior should be capitalized in the prices of affected goods. I empirically quantify the spatial price effects and find patterns consistent with theoretical predictions. Michigan’s border prices are higher (lower) for goods with higher (lower) per unit costs by up to 38%. Price-distance trends reflect the waning of these effects away from the border.
