EENRS Program Reports & Publications
This report presents preliminary results of a study investigating the groundwater laws and regulations of thirteen U.S. states. The purpose of the project is eventually to compile and present the groundwater laws and regulations of every state in the United States that could then be used in a series of comparisons of groundwater governance principles, strategies, issues, and challenges. Professor Gabriel Eckstein at Texas A&M University School of Law and Professor Amy Hardberger at Saint Mary’s University Law School developed a matrix to ascertain chief components and characteristics of the groundwater legal regime of each state. Student researchers then used …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Rapid demographic, sociocultural, and economic transitions are driving increases in the risk and prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in sub-Saharan Africa. The impacts of these transitions and their health and economic consequences are evident. Whereas, in 1990, the leading causes of death in sub-Saharan Africa were HIV/AIDS, lower respiratory infections, diarrhoeal diseases, malaria, and vaccine-preventable diseases in children, in more recent years, cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors are replacing infectious diseases as the leading causes of death in this region, and rates of increase of cardiovascular risk factors are predicted to be greater in sub-Saharan Africa …

Gouldian Finch Breeding Surveys 2017: Ord-East Kimberley Expansion Project - Weaber Plain Development Area, Sarah R. Pryke
Irrigated Agricultural Development in the North
As part of the requirement for State approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and the Gouldian Finch Management Plan (GFMP), a baseline assessment and on-going monitoring of the endangered Gouldian finch (Erythrura gouldiae) is required during the construction and operation of the Ord River Irrigation Area Weaber Plain Development Project in the eastern Kimberley, Western Australia. This report details the findings from surveys of Gouldian finches during their annual breeding season (2017).
Queer Theory, Sex Work, And Foucault's Unreason, Brooke M. Beloso
Queer Theory, Sex Work, And Foucault's Unreason, Brooke M. Beloso
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
During the late nineties, leading voices of the sex worker rights movement began to publicly question queer theory’s virtual silence on the subject of prostitution and sex work. However, this attempt by sex workers to “come out of the closet” into the larger queer theoretical community has thus far failed to bring much attention to sex work as an explicitly queer issue. Refusing the obvious conclusion—that queer theory’s silence on sex work somehow proves its insignificance to this field of inquiry—I trace in Foucault’s oeuvre signs of an alternate (albeit differently) queer genealogy of prostitution and sex work. Both challenging …

Relationships Among Academic And Athletic Motivation And Mental, Physical, And Academic Outcomes In Collegiate Athletes, Daniel Tebbe
Relationships Among Academic And Athletic Motivation And Mental, Physical, And Academic Outcomes In Collegiate Athletes, Daniel Tebbe
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
As of 2015, there were approximately 480,000 collegiate athletes in the United States. Among these students, a scant few are drafted as a professional within their respective sports. For example, only 1.6% of students are drafted into the NFL, and 1.1% and 0.9% of male and female students enter the NBA and WNBA, respectively (NCAA.org, 2016). As there is a very negligible likelihood of becoming and making one’s living as a professional athlete, it is critically important that students who attend university as athletes earn a degree to have a career that will serve them for the rest of life …
Making A Nation Abroad: The Role Of Migrant Colonies In The Establishment Of Albania, Rufki Salihi
Making A Nation Abroad: The Role Of Migrant Colonies In The Establishment Of Albania, Rufki Salihi
History Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation examines the crucial role of Albanian emigrants in the development of the Albanian National Movement, and the establishment of the modern state of Albania. It takes a transnational approach, by surveying the migrant networks that operated beyond the confines of government authority. It highlights the importance that the migration processes held for the development of Albanian nationalist sentiment. Albanian-speaking migrants developed ethnic self-awareness by interacting with various cultures abroad, which strengthened their ethnic solidarity among them. Albanian migrant colonies in the United States engaged heavily in efforts to help their homeland, challenging the assimilation paradigm. Instead, there are …
Impacts Of Landscape And Past Climate On Patterns Of Hybridization And Genetic Diversity In Plestiodon Tetragrammus And P. Multivirgatus, Matthew Moseley
Impacts Of Landscape And Past Climate On Patterns Of Hybridization And Genetic Diversity In Plestiodon Tetragrammus And P. Multivirgatus, Matthew Moseley
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Past hybridization plays an important role in evolution of taxa. We use multiple phylogenetic approaches including single gene sequencing and high-through put sequencing to address the effects of past hybridization in the four-lined skinks, P. tetragrammus, and the variable skink, P. multivirgatus. We show that mitochondrial genes have been introgressed between P. multivirgatus and P. t. brevilineatus. We also show that this introgression has lead to decreased genetic diversity in these lineages. We use species distribution models to show that P. multivirgatus and P. t. brevilineatus shared a large portion of their ranges in the last glacial maximum allowing for …
Geology And Geochemistry Of The Uvas Volcanic Field And Rubio Peak Formation Of South-Central New Mexico, Usa, Max Logan Hoffman
Geology And Geochemistry Of The Uvas Volcanic Field And Rubio Peak Formation Of South-Central New Mexico, Usa, Max Logan Hoffman
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
South-central New Mexico is characterized by many Cenozoic volcanic and tectonic events that produced a complex system of magma sources. These mechanisms are responsible for the diverse volcanic activity and magmatic evolution in New Mexico. To understand the growth and development of the mantle sources associated with these events, geochemical, petrographic, structural and spatial distribution data were collected from the Uvas volcanic field (UVF) and the Rubio Peak Formation of the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field (MDVF). Volcanic rocks from these volcanic fields were chosen based on their importance to relative timing of magmatic and tectonic transitioning events. The structural and spatial …

Geomorphic Disturbance And Anthropogenic Modifications In Big Barren Creek, Mark Twain National Forest, Southeast Missouri, Rachael A. Bradley
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This study investigates the influence of human disturbance on channel conditions in Big Barren Creek. The Big Barren watershed drains 191 km2 of the Ozark Highlands in southeast Missouri. Several segments of the creek have been channelized by levee construction and gravel mining. Approximately 27.2 km of the main stem of Barren Creek were assessed for 13 photo-years ranging from 1939 to 2014. Geomorphic classifications using channel conditions in aerial photographs and field observations were used to evaluate patterns of disturbance. While 52% of the creek is managed by private landowners, 81% of disturbed length occurs on private lands. Further, …
Urban Detention Basin Contamination With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) And Metals, Holly Marie Duff
Urban Detention Basin Contamination With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) And Metals, Holly Marie Duff
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds that can be toxic to wildlife and humans when released to the environment. Coal-tar sealants, which are applied to parking lots or driveways, contribute up to 1,000 times more PAHs than alternative sealants. Over time, these sealants abrade and are transported into drainage networks. Coal-tar sealants are currently used in Springfield, Missouri, however the extent of PAH contamination throughout urban drainage systems is unclear. This study focused on PAH contamination within an urban detention basin on the Missouri State University campus which receives runoff from several coal-tar sealed parking lots. Sediment samples collected …
Land Use And Land-Cover Change Detection And Its Effect On Bengal Tiger Mortality For Central India, Tania Banerjee
Land Use And Land-Cover Change Detection And Its Effect On Bengal Tiger Mortality For Central India, Tania Banerjee
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This research investigates land use/land cover change in central India and it’s impacts on the tiger population. Central India is situated on the Deccan plateau with tropical climate patterns and includes two large states: Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Central India has the largest tiger reserves in India. The land cover of this area is dominated by forest, agricultural land, and urban settlement. After the Green Revolution in the 1970s, the central India has undergone tremendous changes in land use/land cover. Time-series Landsat satellite imageries were processed and classified in a GIS environment to identify these land use/land cover changes. The …

The Paternalistic Eye: Senator Edwin Johnson And The U.S. Television Freeze, James C. Foust
School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications
This study examines Senator Edwin Johnson’s involvement with the television freeze in the United States from 1948 to 1952. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) instituted the freeze after postwar applications for television licenses far outstripped the capability of the VHF band to hold stations. During the freeze, Johnson, who was chair of the Senate Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee, pressured the FCC to approve CBS’s non-compatible color system and to move broadcasting to the UHF band as a way to counteract RCA’s patent dominance in monochrome VHF broadcasting. To this end, the senator corresponded with the FCC chair, industry leaders, …

Regional Sensitivities Of Seasonal Snowpack To Elevation, Aspect, And Vegetation Cover In Western North America, Nancy F. Glenn
Regional Sensitivities Of Seasonal Snowpack To Elevation, Aspect, And Vegetation Cover In Western North America, Nancy F. Glenn
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
In mountains with seasonal snow cover, the effects of climate change on snowpack will be constrained by landscape-vegetation interactions with the atmosphere. Airborne lidar surveys used to estimate snow depth, topography, and vegetation were coupled with reanalysis climate products to quantify these interactions and to highlight potential snowpack sensitivities to climate and vegetation change across the western U.S. at Rocky Mountain (RM), Northern Basin and Range (NBR), and Sierra Nevada (SNV) sites. In forest and shrub areas, elevation captured the greatest amount of variability in snow depth (16–79%) but aspect explained more variability (11–40%) in alpine areas. Aspect was most …

Turf Grass Sod Production Utilizing Hydroponic Systems, Raed Sameeh Raja Hussian
Aridland Agriculture Theses
Turf as a cover is a very essential component in enhancing the aesthetics and in climate modification of the landscape in arid regions. The grasses employed for turf production are cultivable grass species of the poaceae family in the class monocots. It can considerably withstand the stress of traffic and mowing provided right grass species are selected and sod production undertaken. The UAE is characterized by a bi-seasonal Mediterranean climate with high temperature and low rainfall. Like in any desert ecosystems, soils are poor in organic matter, with relatively low biological activities in UAE. In the present research, two warm …

Hypertension As A Determining Factor In The Rupture Of Intracranial Aneurysms, Diagnosed By 64-Mdct Angiography, Heni Fatmawati, Antonius G. Santoso
Makara Journal of Health Research
Background: To determine a correlation between risk factors and the rupture of intracranial aneurysms. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 29 patients with a saccular intracranial aneurysm was obtained using consecutive sampling and examination of 64-MDCT angiography. Bivariate statistical analysis using Fisher's exact test was arranged using cross-tabulation to determine the correlation between each risk factor of age, sex, hypertension, and smoking with the occurrence of ruptured intracranial aneurysms. Results: The highest incidence of ruptured intracranial aneurysms were in patients aged < 60 years (70%), male (75%), experienced hypertension (85%), and were smokers (85.7%). Only the risk factor of hypertension had a correlation with the occurrence of a ruptured intracranial aneurysm (p < 0.05). The prevalence ratio of age and sex were 1.0 and 0.9, whereas hypertension and smoking were 2.6 and 1.3. Conclusions: The risk factor of hypertension leading to a ruptured intracranial aneurysm was 2.6 times higher than non-hypertensive patients, and as such hypertension is a risk factor associated with the occurrence of ruptured intracranial aneurysms
Quantifying The Rates And Spatial Distribution Of Recent Sedimentation Within The Hydrologically Connected Floodplains Of The Middle Mississippi River, Usa, Using Digital Elevation Models And Dendrogeomorphology, Julia Kay Ryherd
Theses
The construction of levees along the Mississippi River [MR], beginning in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, have isolated the river along many segments from its floodplain. Sediment from the river is currently deposited in the hydrologically connected floodplain [HCF], the area between the channel margin at low water and the levees. Researchers have studied the amount and rates of sediment deposition along the Upper and Lower Mississippi River segments from the headwaters to Pool 22 and from the Ohio River to the delta; however, no such assessments have been undertaken along the Middle Mississippi River [MMR]. This study attempts to fill …

Border mapping is an activity which could be done continuously as the region develops. Many kinds of methods in border mapping have been done, and each has strength and weakness. Technology of remote sensing which continues to develop can be used to optimize border mapping to be more efficient. Remote sensing is one of the way to know the condition of earth surface, which in border mapping uses high resolution image, Quickbird image. The spatial accuracy of Quickbird image which reaches 2.4 meters per pixel can be used to monitor land use, to be created into a map which gives …
