Engineering Programs And Social Sciences At Sultan Qaboos University: Presentation Of Experience And Trends, Ahmed Yousef, Haj Bordosen Aug 2017

Engineering Programs And Social Sciences At Sultan Qaboos University: Presentation Of Experience And Trends, Ahmed Yousef, Haj Bordosen

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

The engineering programs at Sultan Qaboos University are designed to include a number of courses related to humanities and social sciences. This will enrich the interdisciplinarity required for engineering programs from both theoretical and practical aspects. This trend has become more significant after ABET accreditation of all College of Engineering programs in the last few years. However, like any new deployment of such interdisciplinarity, few challenges were encountered and a number of solutions successfully adopted. This fact is natural for engineering disciplines that have strong ties with rapidly evolving industrial environments. The currently growing interaction between engineering and social sciences …

The Multi-Dimensional Problem Of Quantifying Cartographic Generalization Uncertainty: Linear Features As An Example., Ali M. Al-Ghamdi Aug 2017

The Multi-Dimensional Problem Of Quantifying Cartographic Generalization Uncertainty: Linear Features As An Example., Ali M. Al-Ghamdi

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

This paper highlights cartographic considerations relevant during the process of quantification of generalization uncertainties, defined here as Generalization Factor (GF). The paper adds to current research on map or spatial database errors and uncertainties, but focuses on the complex nature of the quantification process of generalization uncertainties. Three main cartographic aspects or contexts are discussed in this paper: namely, feature complexity, map sources, and map purposes. The paper discusses the difficulties in producing a universal index as GF that accounts satisfactorily for generalization uncertainty. As a result, there is a need for a thorough study to account for all types …

Arab Islamic Scholars: Contributions Lost, Khawlah Ahmed Aug 2017

Arab Islamic Scholars: Contributions Lost, Khawlah Ahmed

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

Arab Islamic scholars have played a major role in the development of science and knowledge and have produced work that has been regarded by many as the catalyst for the enlightenment of the world. They have set foundations and were responsible for many scientific breakthroughs. Yet contemporary history books and academic curriculums neglected these contributions and the role they played. This paper presents research evidence that documents some of these contributions and initiates the argument that there is a need to present such work, connect the past to the present by presenting what seems to have been lost along the …

A Folk Story From Dhofar A Pathway To Indigenous Knowledge, Ali Tigani Elmahi, Ahmed Mohamed Al Khatheri

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

Folktales serve certain aspects and involve meaningful intentions in the society. This paper assess a Dhofari folk story in Oman. The story denotes the significance of folk explanation for the first emergence of poultry in Dhofar. It compares the beautiful coloured bird the Arabian partridge, Alectoris melanocephala in Dhofar’s environment with the common domestic chicken Gallus domesticus. The paper concludes that the folktales target the conservation of the society’s traditions, educating and enlightening the society’s members especially the young generations and most all demonstrates the faculty of folk explanation. Therefore, the paper urges that these folktales must be documented and …

The Brussels Peace Conference Of 1874 And The Modern Laws Of Belligerent Qualification, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell Aug 2017

The Brussels Peace Conference Of 1874 And The Modern Laws Of Belligerent Qualification, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The Brussels Conference of 1874 was convened after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). At stake was not only the restoration of the fragile balance of power in Europe, but also the articulation of a new ideal of warfare and its role in the European state system. This article discusses the Conference in relation to the “new war” thesis put forth by Mary Kaldor in New and Old Wars (1999). It was at Brussels that the “old war” crystalized as a political ideal: war would be a tournament, fought by professional armies, organized by nation states; civilians who refrained from participation would …

Rage For Order: The British Empire And The Origins Of International Law 1800–1850 By Lauren Benton & Lisa Ford, Sam Zucchi Aug 2017

Rage For Order: The British Empire And The Origins Of International Law 1800–1850 By Lauren Benton & Lisa Ford, Sam Zucchi

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Fittingly, Rage For Order by Lauren Benton, Professor of Law and History at Vanderbilt University, and Lisa Ford, Associate Professor of History at the University of New South Wales, takes both its title and its epigraph from the last stanza of Wallace Stevens’ “The Idea of Order at Key West.” Originally written on the then-sparsely inhabited island of Key West in Florida, the poem blends the sound of a woman singing with the ocean and uses that voice to delineate the various boundaries between wave, sky, and horizon line. Beginning with the stanza quoted above, Stevens ends up identifying the …

Modern Transformations In The Urban Social Structure In Muscat City, Belgacem Mokhtar

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

This study intends to gauge the framework of factors and mechanisms that contributed to the restructuring of social setup of Greater Muscat and the thereof ensuing economic, social and environmental disparities between the different residential quarters of the city. In order to produce an approximated model of the old and contemporary social structure of the city, the study used field surveys, interviews, real-estate values and types of housing, in addition to available official data. The study demonstrates clearly that locational criteria of the distribution of households in urban space have shifted from the traditional social values and practices towards predominantly …

Sex, Race, And Motel Guests: Another Look At King V Barclay, Sarah E. Hamill Aug 2017

Sex, Race, And Motel Guests: Another Look At King V Barclay, Sarah E. Hamill

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The 1961 case of King v Barclay is something of a footnote in the history of discrimination against Black Canadians. If it is cited at all, it is usually cited alongside the more famous racism cases, such as Christie v York, as proof of the widespread nature of racism in Canada. In this paper, I re-read the trial decision and examine the original case file to show that the facts of King and the racism in the case are more complex than usually realized. King emerged out of a series of errors from both King and Barclay’s Motel which resulted …

Social Constructions Of Childhood: From Not-Yet-Adults To People In Their Own Right, Sophia K. Biddle Aug 2017

Social Constructions Of Childhood: From Not-Yet-Adults To People In Their Own Right, Sophia K. Biddle

Anthós

Across the globe it is clear that children are a marginalized group. Children are not allowed to vote or be taken seriously in political circles (Sharpe, 2015), are kept away from public spaces (Valentine 2004), navigate inhospitable working conditions (Gamlin et. al., 2015), and are rapidly losing the time and space to foster their own child culture (Woolley and Griffin, 2014). Adults continue to institutionalize children’s play and restrict children’s access to public space. This serves to reinforce children’s position as second-class citizens. A mounting body of work shows that children are suffering in their physical and social development due …

Acoustic Signatures Of Habitat Types In The Miombo Woodlands Of Western Tanzania, Sheryl Vanessa Amorocho, Dante Francomano, Kristen M. Bellisario, Ben Gottesman, Bryan C. Pijanowski Aug 2017

Acoustic Signatures Of Habitat Types In The Miombo Woodlands Of Western Tanzania, Sheryl Vanessa Amorocho, Dante Francomano, Kristen M. Bellisario, Ben Gottesman, Bryan C. Pijanowski

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The Miombo Woodlands of Tanzania comprise several habitat types that are home to a great number of flora and fauna. Understanding their responses to increasing human disturbance is important for conservation, especially in places where people depend so directly on their local ecosystem services to survive. Soundscapes are a powerful approach to study complex biomes undergoing change. The sounds emitted by soniferous fauna characterize the acoustic profile of the landscapes they inhabit such that habitats with the highest acoustic abundance are considered as the most diverse and possibly more ecologically resilient. However, acoustic variability within similar habitat types may pose …

Utilizing A Consumer-Grade Camera System To Quantify Surface Reflectance, Joseph J. Lehnert Aug 2017

Utilizing A Consumer-Grade Camera System To Quantify Surface Reflectance, Joseph J. Lehnert

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Consumer-grade camera systems are often employed in aerial remote sensing to provide insight into patterns and processes of interest to science and industry, a trend that has largely been encouraged by the rapid growth of the small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) industry. However, little research exists on the ability of these systems to accurately measure surface reflectance in specific wavebands, a crucial consideration for many remote sensing applications. This research was conducted on the premise that with proper equipment and calibration techniques consumer-grade cameras would be capable of accurately measuring surface reflectance in user-defined wavebands of interest. A stereo-pair, Fujifilm …
