Core Fragments Of Tibetan Plateau From Gondwanaland United In Northern Hemisphere, Ding Lin, Li Zhenyu, Song Peiping
Core Fragments Of Tibetan Plateau From Gondwanaland United In Northern Hemisphere, Ding Lin, Li Zhenyu, Song Peiping
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Paleomagnetic and geochronological studies conducted in the North Qiangtang and Lhasa blocks indicate firstly, the North Qiangtang block was situated in the latitudinal band of 21.9°±4.7°S in southern hemisphere 297 Ma ago, ruling out the long-lasting working hypothesis on the North Qiangtang block of its Laurasian origin, and secondly, attest North Qiangtang's Gondwana origin much earlier and subsequently started its northward drifting journey after rifted from northern margin of the Gondwanaland. The North Qiangtang block reached its present latitude some 210 Ma ago. Thus, the North Qiangtang block can be vividly viewed as "an early bird of the Gondwana" in …

Human Activities, Environmental Changes, And Rise And Decline Of Silk Road Civilization In Pan-Third Pole Region, Chen Fahu, An Chengbang, Dong Guanghui, Zhang Dongju
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Third Pole Region mainly includes the Tibetan Plateau and the arid central Asia, spanning from the Caucasus mountains to the Loess plateau. Located in the hinterland of the Eurasian continent, different ethnic groups and cultures in this area experienced complex and long-term contact, communication, fusion, and sedimentary accretion, opening up a convenient channel for exchanges between Eastern and Western civilizations, profoundly influencing the development process of human civilization. Study on the human activities, change of environment and their relationship between the rise and fall of the Silk Road, and analysis of social environment development of this key area, will …

Simulated Vs. Empirical Weather Responsiveness Of Crop Yields: U.S. Evidence And Implications For The Agricultural Impacts Of Climate Change, Malcolm N Mistry, Ian Sue Wing, Enrica De Cian
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Global gridded crop models (GGCMs) are the workhorse of assessments of the agricultural impacts of climate change. Yet the changes in crop yields projected by different models in response to the same meteorological forcing can differ substantially. Through an inter-method comparison, we provide a first glimpse into the origins and implications of this divergence—both among GGCMs and between GGCMs and historical observations. We examine yields of rainfed maize, wheat, and soybeans simulated by six GGCMs as part of the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project-Fast Track (ISIMIP-FT) exercise, comparing 1981-2004 hindcast yields over the coterminous United States (U.S.) against U.S. Dept. …

© 2017 American Chemical Society. Stable, bioreactive, radicals known as environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) have been found to exist on the surface of airborne PM2.5. These EPFRs have been found to form during many combustion processes, are present in vehicular exhaust, and persist in the environment for weeks and biological systems for up to 12 h. To measure EPFRs in PM samples, high volume samplers are required and measurements are less representative of community exposure; therefore, we developed a novel spatial phytosampling methodology to study the spatial patterns of EPFR concentrations using plants. Leaf samples for laboratory PM analysis …
Relative Target Estimation Using A Cascade Of Extended Kalman Filters, Jerel Nielsen, Randal Beard
Relative Target Estimation Using A Cascade Of Extended Kalman Filters, Jerel Nielsen, Randal Beard
Student Works
This paper presents a method of tracking multiple ground targets from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in a 3D reference frame. The tracking method uses a monocular camera and makes no assumptions on the shape of the terrain or the target motion. The UAV runs two cascaded estimators. The first is an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which is responsible for tracking the UAV’s state, such as position and velocity relative to a fixed frame. The second estimator is an EKF that is responsible for estimating a fixed number of landmarks within the camera’s field of view. Landmarks are parameterized by …

Social Bargaining In States And Cities: Toward A More Egalitarian And Democratic Workplace Law, Kate Andrias

A well-documented problem motivates this symposium: The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) does not effectively protect workers’ rights to organize, bargain, and strike. Though unions once represented a third of American workers, today the vast majority of workers are non-union and employed “at will.” The decline of organization among workers is a key factor contributing to the rise of economic and political inequality in American society. Yet reforming labor law at the federal level—at least in a progressive direction—is currently impossible. Meanwhile, broad preemption doctrine means that states and localities are significantly limited in their ability to address the weaknesses …

The Neighborhood Of Mccook Field: Putting The Community And The Environment Back Together, Claudia Hampel, Rebecca Richardson
The Neighborhood Of Mccook Field: Putting The Community And The Environment Back Together, Claudia Hampel, Rebecca Richardson
Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing
Our assignment was based on the concept of community and all it entails. Each student pair in our class was assigned a neighborhood in Dayton (ours being McCook Field) and given the task of identifying an asset of their respective neighborhood, along with demographic information, physical geography, economic characteristics, etc. We initially began our assignment by talking about how communities are defined and constructed, then we began doing research on our assigned neighborhood in order to find one asset. In our case, we chose to focus on the issue with volatile organic compounds in McCook Field and the steps being …

Minimum Wage Change Effects On Restaurant Pricing And Employment, Toni Repetti, Susan Roe
Minimum Wage Change Effects On Restaurant Pricing And Employment, Toni Repetti, Susan Roe
Hospitality Faculty Research
Purpose State and local governments are considering large increases to the minimum wage. As restaurants employ many individuals paid at or below minimum wage, these changes may affect their businesses. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the anticipated effects of minimum wage growth on employment and pricing in US food and beverage operations. Design/methodology/approach The study utilizes an experimental design where restaurant owners and managers are presented with scenarios of differing levels of potential minimum wage increases and are asked to anticipate changes to employment and pricing. Findings Restaurant owners and managers involved in the study indicate the …

Principled Negotiation: The Final Answer To The South China Sea Dispute, Hoa Nguyen
Principled Negotiation: The Final Answer To The South China Sea Dispute, Hoa Nguyen
Texas A&M Law Review
Principled negotiation suggests that in any conflict there are interests that motivate a party’s claimed position. Identifying and focusing on these interests instead of the position itself is the best way to solve the underlying conflict, whether it concerns a family quarrel, a business contract, or an international settlement among nations. On the surface of the South China Sea dispute, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan all make conflicting claims over various features in the South China Sea, particularly the Spratly and Paracel Islands. However, in reality, each nation has particular interests in mind when asserting its claiming …

Insights Into Onchocerca Volvulus Population Biology Through Multilocus Immunophenotyping, Carmelle T Norice-Tra, José Ribeiro, Sasisekhar Bennuru, Michael P Fay, Rahul Tyagi, Makedonka Mitreva, Thomas B Nutman
2010-2019 OA Pubs
We have developed a serologically based immunophenotyping approach to study Onchocerca volvulus (Ov) population diversity. Using genomic sequence data and polymerase chain reaction-based genotyping, we identified nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes of 16 major immunogenic Ov proteins: Ov-CHI-1/Ov-CHI-2, Ov16, Ov-FAR-1, Ov-CPI-1, Ov-B20, Ov-ASP-1, Ov-TMY-1, OvSOD1, OvGST1, Ov-CAL-1, M3/M4, Ov-RAL-1, Ov-RAL-2, Ov-ALT-1, Ov-FBA-1, and Ov-B8. We assessed the immunoreactivity of onchocerciasis patient sera (n = 152) from the Americas, West Africa, Central Africa, and East Africa against peptides derived from 10 of these proteins containing SNPs. Statistically significant variation in immunoreactivity among the regions was seen in SNP-containing peptides …

Climate controls annual NEP variability by regulating CUP and NEPmax.
Abstract
The seasonal and interannual variability of the terrestrial carbon cycle is regulated by the interactions of climate and ecosystem function. However, the key factors and processes determining the interannual variability of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) in different biomes are far from clear. Here, we quantified yearly anomalies of seasonal and annual NEP, net carbon uptake period (CUP), and the maximum daily NEP (NEPmax) …

Evidence For The Early Onset Of The Ipswichian Thermal Optimum: Palaeoecology Of Last Interglacial Deposits At Whittlesey, Eastern England, H Langford, S Boreham, Rm Briant, Gr Coope, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Fossiliferous deposits infilling a channel at Whittlesey, eastern England, are dated by amino acid racemization to the Last Interglacial, and pollen analysis indicates deposition in Ipswichian biozones Ip Ib and Ip IIb. Multidisciplinary palaeoenvironmental analyses of these deposits provide a rare insight into Ip Ib subzone conditions. Specifically, the Ip Ib deposits contain exotic thermophiles Naias minor, Belgrandia marginata, Bembidion elongatum, Pelochares versicolor, Caccobius schreberi, Onthophagus massai and Emys orbicularis, usually associated with Ip IIb. Combined palaeotemperature reconstructions based on beetle, ostracod and vertebrate assemblages of the Ip Ib deposits indicate that summers (mean July range +19 to +22°C) were …
