Religion And Esotericism Among Students: A Crosscultural Comparative Study, Franz Höllinger, Timothy B. Smith Sep 2017

Religion And Esotericism Among Students: A Crosscultural Comparative Study, Franz Höllinger, Timothy B. Smith

Faculty Publications

Analyzing the results of a study on religious and esoteric beliefs and practice among university students from five European and five American countries, we found that the level of religiousness of students depends very much on their cultural environment: the level of religiosity and esoteric beliefs is significantly higher among North- and South-American students than among European students. On the other hand, Asian spiritual techniques and esoteric methods of healing are practiced more frequently by students in North-Western European countries. In the second part of the paper, we examine the relationship between academic discipline and religious worldviews. According to our …

Reciprocity In The Practice Of Publicly Engaged Scholarship: Reflections From A Transnational Literacy Project, Kate E. Kedley, Héctor Efrén Flores A. Sep 2017

Reciprocity In The Practice Of Publicly Engaged Scholarship: Reflections From A Transnational Literacy Project, Kate E. Kedley, Héctor Efrén Flores A.

eJournal of Public Affairs

In this article, the authors examine the concept of “reciprocity” in publicly engaged literacy scholarship. The idea of reciprocity suggests that projects using a publicly engaged research model should comprise two-way partnerships that strive to balance benefits to the researcher and to community partners. The authors (a researcher and a community partner) explore this dynamic by considering their own experiences working on projects with groups of youth in Honduras and in the United States. The groups shared their cultures and experiences through writing and technology, and challenged ideas about security and public space. Given the national, racial, cultural, economic, linguistic, …

Geographic Distance And The Impact Of Investor Sentiment On Stock Prices, Yan Yang Sep 2017

Geographic Distance And The Impact Of Investor Sentiment On Stock Prices, Yan Yang

Lingnan Theses

Based on China’s stock market, this study investigates how firms’ geographic distance from a financial center affects the sensitivity of stock prices to investor sentiment. I find that firms located closer to a financial center are more affected by investor sentiment than firms located far from a financial center. This distance effect holds for different geographic cutting boundaries and after excluding firms located in financial centers. Besides, using China’s High Speed Railway (HSR) as an exogenous shock, I find that HSR connection significantly decreases the effect of geographic distance on the sentiment-driven stock price relationship. In addition, firms with shorter …

Re-Envisioning Kindergarten Learning Spaces In The U.S Education System, Suhina Agarwal

Theses

The thesis work aims at improving the learning environments of the Kindergarten classrooms in the United States by taking inspiration from a very simple and popular play element namely the ‘blocks’. The classroom environments and learning methods have not seen a significant change since the time of the Industrial Revolution. The essence of school education remains the same, which is expected to be a closed classroom, conventional furniture and the teacher determining the learning activities. With the changing times, as new studies on multiple styles of learning and brain functions emerge, there is a need to customize education and cater …

Assessing The Distribution Of Environmental Stewardship Organizations And Their Relationship To The Demographics Of Los Angeles County, Krystle M. Golly

LMU Theses and Dissertations

An equal distribution of environmental stewardship organizations across the urban landscape provides an environment that facilitates community empowerment. The systemic issues found in Los Angeles County play an important role in the social development of the area. Through the utilization of modern technology and geographical mapping software, spatial distribution of environmental stewardship organizations provided an understanding of social conditions within Los Angeles County. Environmental stewardship organizations provide the capability for communities to be more engaged in helping to eliminate environmental injustice. The comparison of minority populations at the census tract-level emphasizes the importance of connecting environmental stewardship organizations with their …

The 2016 Presidential Election: Demographic Transformation And Racial Backlash, Skyler Lillian Brocker-Knapp Sep 2017

The 2016 Presidential Election: Demographic Transformation And Racial Backlash, Skyler Lillian Brocker-Knapp

Dissertations and Theses

Despite analysts' predictions and assertions prior to the 2016 presidential election, the Hispanic vote did not prove decisive. Donald Trump's victory elucidates a new electoral calculus, one that will be ruled simultaneously by changing demographics and the backlash against such change. While Hispanic voters largely supported Hillary Clinton, structural and individual impediments hinder their access to the voting booth and their turnout on election day. This thesis explores the reasons why the Hispanic electorate did not prove decisive in the 2016 presidential election. It further illuminates the changing Electoral College map, in which the Midwest and the Rustbelt are determined …

Georgetown’S First Six Moocs: Completion, Intention, And Gender Achievement Gaps, Paul A. Healy Sep 2017

Georgetown’S First Six Moocs: Completion, Intention, And Gender Achievement Gaps, Paul A. Healy

Undergraduate Economic Review

This analysis of Georgetown’s first six MOOCs (massive open online courses) comprises three parts, moving from general to specific in scope. I begin with a discussion of demographic factors across all six courses, seeking to answer the following question: “Who takes, and succeeds in these courses?” Next, I discuss the relationship between stated intention and course performance with survey data from a pre-course survey for Georgetown’s very first MOOC, an economics course. I end by examining the gender achievement gap in the same economics course.

Ssd Admission Control For Content Delivery Networks, Dragos Ionescu, Richard Schooler, Kenneth Barr Sep 2017

Ssd Admission Control For Content Delivery Networks, Dragos Ionescu, Richard Schooler, Kenneth Barr

Defensive Publications Series

Content delivery networks (CDNs) are utilized to deliver content with low latency. Solid State Drive (SSD) devices are a cost-effective option for intermediate tier caches in servers used in CDNs. However, excessive writes of content to SSD devices can degrade useful life of such devices. This disclosure describes admission control techniques to manage content in an SSD cache. In particular, a popularity metric for content items is determined based on an inter-arrival time. The popularity metric takes into account past admission history and is dynamically to account for variations in content popularity over different time periods. These techniques balance the …

Change Of Geographical Environment In Southern Margin Of Tibetan Plateau Since 1980s, Liu Ronggao, Liu Yang, Xu Xinliang, Ge Quansheng Sep 2017

Change Of Geographical Environment In Southern Margin Of Tibetan Plateau Since 1980s, Liu Ronggao, Liu Yang, Xu Xinliang, Ge Quansheng

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The southern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is located in a transitional zone between the plateau and the South Asia Sub-continent. It is also an intersectional region of the westerlies and the South Asia Summer Monsoon (SASM). This region is quite sensitive to the changes of global climate system and regional environment. Combined with satellite remote sensing and field observations, the inter-annual variability of natural and human geography conditions of the margin have been investigated. The results show that this region is covered mainly by forest (48.62%). The vegetation is mainly distributed in southern edge of the Himalayas and the …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Third Pole national park group construction is the scientific choice for implementing the strategy of major function zoning and green development in Tibet, China. This study demonstrates that building Third Pole national park group fits for the rules of sustainable development based on analyses of transformation of Tibet's development driving-forces, development positioning by central government of China, and increasing growth trend of human consumption demand.
