© 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Objective: To identify the key risk factors and explain the spatiotemporal patterns of childhood asthma in the Memphis metropolitan area (MMA) over an 11-year period (2005–2015). We hypothesize that in the MMA region this burden is more prevalent among urban children living south, downtown, and north of Memphis than in other areas. Methods: We used a large-scale longitudinal electronic health record database from an integrated healthcare system, Geographic information systems (GIS), and statistical and space-time models to study the spatiotemporal distributions of childhood asthma at census tract level. Results: We found statistically significant …

Ethnic Violence, Local Security And Return Migration: Enclave Communities In Kosovo, Sandra F. Joireman Sep 2017

Ethnic Violence, Local Security And Return Migration: Enclave Communities In Kosovo, Sandra F. Joireman

Political Science Faculty Publications

Forced migration has become commonplace in the international political landscape. In 2015, 60 million people were displaced by violence, more than ever before recorded (UNHCR, 2015). While we know that violence leads to displacement, we know little about return migration after conflict – who comes back and where they settle. This article seeks to engage and supplement the literature on return migration after conflict, advocating for a broader understanding of the security choices made by displaced people. Emphasized here is the importance of a local understanding of safety and the role played by enclave communities in providing a secure context …

Estimating The Marginal Cost Of Dam Removal, Ben Blachly, Emi Uchida Sep 2017

Estimating The Marginal Cost Of Dam Removal, Ben Blachly, Emi Uchida

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Working Papers

This paper reports the results from linear regression models that estimate the cost of dam removal as a function of the dam’s height and length. The models indicate that, on average, each vertical foot contributes between $22,331 and $30,620 to the cost of removal. These estimates are in line with the only other study we are aware of that estimates cost per foot. Although the models fail to account for potentially important variables, they may be useful for providing rough estimates of the variable portion of dam removal cost.

A Location-Aware Middleware Framework For Collaborative Visual Information Discovery And Retrieval, Andrew J.M. Compton Sep 2017

A Location-Aware Middleware Framework For Collaborative Visual Information Discovery And Retrieval, Andrew J.M. Compton

Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses the problem of scalable location-aware distributed indexing to enable the leveraging of collaborative effort for the construction and maintenance of world-scale visual maps and models which could support numerous activities including navigation, visual localization, persistent surveillance, structure from motion, and hazard or disaster detection. Current distributed approaches to mapping and modeling fail to incorporate global geospatial addressing and are limited in their functionality to customize search. Our solution is a peer-to-peer middleware framework based on XOR distance routing which employs a Hilbert Space curve addressing scheme in a novel distributed geographic index. This allows for a universal …

Nurturing Nature During The Golden Age Of Piracy, Thomas R. Meeks Jr. Sep 2017

Nurturing Nature During The Golden Age Of Piracy, Thomas R. Meeks Jr.

The Purdue Historian

The impact of the natural world on an infamous era of maritime history, the Golden Age of Piracy, is immense, yet often overlooked. Piracy at the time was exacerbated by the dichotomy between rich and poor, where pirates fought for a life without the pressures of European Colonial powers. The New World was ripe for the picking, and pirates used any means possible to increase their wealth. However, geography, weather, disease, and natural disasters have all altered the historical course of piratical endeavors. This essay provides a detailed account of events where pirates were either hindered by, or benefitted from, …

Invisible Outsiders: Developing A Working Alliance With Appalachian Clients, Jake Protivnak, Cassandra Pusateri, Matthew Paylo, Kyoung Choi Sep 2017

Invisible Outsiders: Developing A Working Alliance With Appalachian Clients, Jake Protivnak, Cassandra Pusateri, Matthew Paylo, Kyoung Choi

Faculty Publications

Appalachian clients are often ‘invisible’ within the majority culture and possess characteristics unique to the region that must be considered within the counseling relationship (Tang & Russ, 2007).  Individuals in Appalachia have higher incidences of certain mental health disorders and substance use as compared to the national average (Appalachian Regional Commission [ARC], 2008).  Although the need for mental health services is evident, limited research exists to inform mental health professionals how to deliver culturally competent interventions to build a working alliance with Appalachian clients.  The authors will discuss a framework for mental health professionals to develop a strong working alliance …

Writing The World: Ten Strategies For Internationalizing The Writing Classroom, Stefanie Frigo

Journal of Student Success in Writing (Archived)

In an increasingly global educational and professional environment, it is essential that new graduates are able to communicate across international and local cultural borders and barriers. Given the reach of composition classes, touching almost every undergraduate, first year writing is uniquely positioned to deliver classes that teach written, verbal, and visual communication and enhance intercultural understanding and global competency. One of the greatest challenges that departments face is delivering this content in an innovative and engaging manner, and without requiring an international experience – something beyond the reach of many students. This article offers solutions via ten practical classroom strategies …

Trade Union Trade-Offs: Unions, Voters, And The Rise Of Right-Wing Populism, Kim Gabbitas Sep 2017

Trade Union Trade-Offs: Unions, Voters, And The Rise Of Right-Wing Populism, Kim Gabbitas

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

Trade union membership in European Union member states has been in decline for decades, which has many concerned about the future of workers’ rights. While existing work examines the reasons for this decline, my research shifts the focus from union density to the functions unions serve and how these functions affect and are affected by changing electoral behavior. I examine the rise of right-wing populist movements in Europe and how these movements and the challenges today’s labor unions face can be traced to the same underlying forces. I argue that, as the relevance of trade unions declines for blue-collar workers, …

A Modified Normalized Difference Impervious Surface Index (Mndisi) For Automatic Urban Mapping From Landsat Imagery, Zhongchang Sun, Cuizhen Wang, Huadong Guo, Ranran Shang

Faculty Publications

Impervious surface area (ISA) is a key factor for monitoring urban environment and land development. Automatic mapping of impervious surfaces has attracted growing attention in recent years. Spectral built-up indices are considered promising to map ISA distributions due to their easy, parameter-free implementations. This study explores the potentials of impervious surface indices for ISA mapping from Landsat imagery using a case study area in Boston, USA. A modified normalized difference impervious surface index (MNDISI) is proposed, and a Gaussian-based automatic threshold selection method is used to identify the optimal MNDISI threshold for delineating impervious surfaces from background features. To evaluate …

Changing Planning’S Policy And Practice Toward Indigenous Australians: How Can It Be Done?, Edward Wensing Sep 2017

Changing Planning’S Policy And Practice Toward Indigenous Australians: How Can It Be Done?, Edward Wensing

Talking Heads Seminar Series

Land administration land use and environmental planning in Australia are public functions. Each State and Territory has their own unique sets of laws for administering land tenures and regulating the use and enjoyment of land for present and future generations (Bates 1995: 10). The Australian approach is firmly rooted in statute law which controls the Crown’s power to grant interests in land and to regulate and change those rights and interests. Conceptually at least, the system is designed to balance public and private interests as well as the interests of present and future generations. Although the degree to which these …

Quantification Of Areal Extent Of Soil Erosion In Dryland Urban Areas: An Example From Windhoek, Namibia, Rosemary Shikangalah, Eva Paton, Florian Jetlsch, Niels Blaum Sep 2017

Quantification Of Areal Extent Of Soil Erosion In Dryland Urban Areas: An Example From Windhoek, Namibia, Rosemary Shikangalah, Eva Paton, Florian Jetlsch, Niels Blaum

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Soil erosion, while often studied in dryland settings for rural regions, has only occasionally been studied in urban settings. This study maps and quantifies areal extent and severity of water erosion in a dryland city (Windhoek, Namibia) using a snap-shot field survey approach. The results show that nearly 56% of the city could be affected by water erosion with signs of accelerated erosion in the form of rills and gullies. These occur mainly in the underdeveloped, informal and semi-formal areas of the city. Factors influencing the extent of erosion in Windhoek include vegetation cover and type, socio-urban factors, and to …

Blackfish Lessons On Environmental Sustainability, Food, And Indigenous Culture, Thomas Swensen Sep 2017

Blackfish Lessons On Environmental Sustainability, Food, And Indigenous Culture, Thomas Swensen

Wellness & Healing: Indigenous Innovations & Alaska Native Research

This essay, “Blackfish Lessons on Environmental Sustainability, Food, and Indigenous Culture,” examines Yup’ik interventions into understanding the place of human-nonhuman animal relations in regard to ecological sustainability. In lending consideration to Indigenous culture, the first part of the essay explicates the Yup’ik way of living, the Yuuyaraq, and its relationship to the environment. Then the essay turns toward two Yup’ik stories about blackfish, John Active’s “Why Subsistence is a Matter of Cultural Survival: A Yup’ik Point of View” (2001) and Emily Johnson’s “Blackfish,” taken from The Thank-You Bar recorded performance (Johnson, 2009), that speak to the imbrications of Indigenous culture …

Racism, Prevent And Education: Insisting On An Open Space, Joanna Haynes, Rowena Passy

Plymouth Institute of Education

In this article we first discuss the Brexit referendum and its links to changes in the nature of racism in England, drawing on Burnett’s (2013) work to demonstrate how ‘local conditions, national politics and global conditions’ have prompted violent racism in new areas of the country. Within this atmosphere of heightened tension, anti-Muslim abuse and attacks have risen over the past two years, with a proportion of these incidents taking place in universities. We then examine the implications of the counter-terrorist Prevent agenda, arguing that educators’ statutory duty to ‘have due regard to the need to prevent people from being …
