God Put Out The Fire, Alyssa Burdett
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
Augusta was a religious woman, a woman who had great faith in God. Her sister Mary told of an incident that happened when Joseph and Augusta went with a group of family and friends on an outing on the mountainside above Salem. They were enjoying themselves and had built a bonfire on which to cook their meal. All of the sudden a little whirlwind came and picked up some embers and blew them into some brush nearby. The brush burst into flames and quickly began to spread. All efforts to beat out the flame failed and it began to burn …

During the summer, we would eat our dinner, then eat a treat out on the front porch. It was South facing and shady, whereas the backyard was sunny and hot. Sometimes we would take a bowl of ice cream out on the porch. But when they were in season, we would take a big bowl of fresh cherries out. The porch was set back in. We could watch whatever activity there was happening on the street, but the tree and bushes somewhat hid us from being easily seen. They were a good cover for our Hillbilly game. One at a …

Samuel and Elizabeth first settled to the north of Salt Lake City in the Kaysville, Davis County area. Their first home was at Blooming Grove, later called Popular Grove, now called Lagoon, which is a pleasure resort. Their first home was a dugout.
A general description of the pioneer dugouts (a cellar) is that they were usually about four to five feet deep with dirt steps leading to the entrance. There was a fireplace in the end opposite the entrance, which generally made the dugout warm and comfortable during the cold of winter. Often the dugouts were without windows or …

Relative Contribution Of Neutral And Deterministic Processes In Shaping Fruit-Feeding Butterfly Assemblages In Afrotropical Forests, Kwaku Aduse-Poku, Freerk Molleman, William Oduro, Samuel K. Oppong, David J. Lohman, Rampal S. Etienne
Publications and Research
The unified neutral theory of biodiversity and biogeography has gained the status of a quantitative null model for explaining patterns in ecological (meta)communities. The theory assumes that individuals of trophically similar species are functionally equivalent. We empirically evaluate the relative contribution of neutral and deterministic processes in shaping fruit-feeding butterfly assemblages in three tropical forests in Africa, using both direct (confronting the neutral model with species abundance data) and indirect approaches (testing the predictions of neutral theory using data other than species abundance distributions). Abundance data were obtained by sampling butterflies using banana baited traps set at the forest canopy …

Sexual Orientation In Canada's Revised Refugee Determination System: An Empirical Snapshot, Sean Rehaag
Articles & Book Chapters
This is one of several articles in a special issue to celebrate Nicole LaViolette's research contributions relating to intersections between gender and sexual orientation in Canadian and international law of forced migration. Inspired by three aspects of LaViolette's research, the article offers a snapshot of how Canada's recently revised refugee determination system addresses refugee claims involving allegations of persecution due to sexual orientation. Using data obtained through access to information requests about 18,221 principal applicant refugee determinations from 2013 to 2015, the article examines patterns in outcomes in cases categorized by the Immigration and Refugee Board as involving sexual orientation. …

Methane- And Dissolved Organic Carbon-Fueled Microbial Loop Supports A Tropical Subterranean Estuary Ecosystem, D. Brankovits, J. W. Pohlman, H. Niemann
KIP Articles
Subterranean estuaries extend inland into density-stratified coastal carbonate aquifers containing a surprising diversity of endemic animals (mostly crustaceans) within a highly oligotrophic habitat. How complex ecosystems (termed anchialine) thrive in this globally distributed, cryptic environment is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that a microbial loop shuttles methane and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to higher trophic levels of the anchialine food web in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). Methane and DOC production and consumption within the coastal groundwater correspond with a microbial community capable of methanotrophy, heterotrophy, and chemoautotrophy, based on characterization by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and respiratory quinone composition. …
Design And Simulation Of An 8-Bit Successive Approximation Register Charge-Redistribution Analog-To-Digital Converter, Sumit K. Verma
Design And Simulation Of An 8-Bit Successive Approximation Register Charge-Redistribution Analog-To-Digital Converter, Sumit K. Verma
Electrical Engineering Theses
The thesis initially investigates the history of the monolithic ADCs. The next chapter explores the different types of ADCs available in the market today. Next, the operation of a 4-bit SAR ADC has been studied. Based on this analysis, an 8-bit charge-redistribution SAR ADC has been designed and simulated with Multisim (National Instruments, Austin, TX). The design is divided into different blocks which are individually implemented and tested. Level-1 SPICE MOSFET models representative of 5μm devices were used wherever individual MOSFETs were used in the design. Finally, the power dissipation during the conversion period was also estimated. The supply voltage …

Language Proficiency And Academic Success Of Bilingual Hispanic Nursing Students, Cristina Dominguez
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The United States (U.S.) experienced recent growth in its minority population. This requires an increase of culturally diverse healthcare providers. English as a second language (ESL) students face challenges such as overcoming their inability to write, comprehend, and communicate in a language different from their native tongue. The study explored the role of language proficiency on academic success among bilingual nursing students on the U.S. and Mexico border.
Cummins Language Proficiency Model guided the study, which aimed to answer whether the dimensions of language proficiency or language acculturation predicted self - assessed language proficiency and academic success. The relationship between …

Me: So, why do you call me Suzie?
Michelle: Hmm, because Grandma used to call you Sister Suzie, you and Malorie, your cousin.
Me: Why did she do that?
M: I, really don’t have any idea. She’d just used to call you Suzie so I’ve always called you Suzie. I called you Suzie until, um, well I’ve always called you Suzie. I used to call you Sis for a long time because, Matt called you Sissy when he was little and then I had to quit calling you Sissy when, or Sis when you were playing volleyball with Sister ‘cause …

So, we go in and the boat was probably a, 48-foot boat. Maybe. Maybe 45-foot boat. So then Uncle Dougy, he’s giving it gas and we go past a wakeless thing, Uncle Dougy’s still going fast, and I was sitting in the back, standing in the back, with my hand against a fiber, …

But we were driving up to see Dad who was working at the house (yeah, I’m watching her) and as we were pulling up into the driveway I had said ”somethin sucks”. And Mom stopped the car, and it was kinda, it was cloudy out, it was like getting really stormy, but Mom started yelling at me as she pulls into …

Creating Effective Style Documents: A Practicum In Trade Publication, Kristen Tardio
Creating Effective Style Documents: A Practicum In Trade Publication, Kristen Tardio
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
It is no secret that the field of publication thrives on collaboration: among publishers, editorial and production team members, designers, marketing and publicity staff, sales representatives and promoters, authors, illustrators, reviewers, and, of course, readers. However, an equally important yet less-explored relationship exists within this industry, between publishing staff and a text itself. As such, despite this crucial connection, the technical means by which the final product is created may also be overlooked.
This practicum examines these technical resources: style guides/sheets (especially for house style), their creation, and their usage in publishing, specifically how they pertain to sales material. Also …
Feasibility Of Using Virtual Reality In Requirements Elicitation Process, Aman Bhimani
Feasibility Of Using Virtual Reality In Requirements Elicitation Process, Aman Bhimani
Master of Science in Software Engineering Theses
Contemporary Virtual Reality (VR) technologies offer an increasing number of functionalities including head-mounted displays (HMD), haptic and sound feedback, as well as motion tracking. This gives us the opportunity to leverage the immersive power offered by these technologies in the context of requirements elicitation, especially to surface those requirements that cannot be expressed via traditional techniques such as interviews and focus groups. The goal of this thesis is to survey uses of VR in requirements engineering, and to describe a method of elicitation using VR as a tool.
To validate the methodology, a research plan is developed with a strong …

A Prograding Margin During Global Sea-Level Maxima: An Example From Mahajanga Basin, Northwest Madagascar, Jonathan Obrist-Farner, Philip J. Ball, Thomas A. (Mac) Mcgilvery, Raymond R. Rogers
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Mesozoic shelf margin in the Mahajanga Basin, northwest Madagascar, provides an example where inherited palaeobathymetry, coupled with sea-level changes, high sediment supply and fluctuations in accommodation influenced the stacking patterns and geometry of clinoforms that accreted onto a passive rifted margin. Two-dimensional (2D) seismic profiles are integrated with existing field data and geological maps to study the evolution of the margin. The basin contains complete records of transgression, highstand, regression and lowstand phases that took place from Jurassic to Cretaceous. Of particular interest is the Cretaceous, Albian to Turonian (ca. 113-93 Ma), siliciclastic shelf margin that prograded …

Use Of Point Of Care Testing To Affect Clinician Treatment Decisions For Patients With Diabetes, Shannon I. Brow
DNP and Student Works
This process improvement initiative implemented a policy for medical assistants (MAs) to perform and record point of care (POC) glucose test results in the electronic medical record (EMR), for all patients with diabetes during clinic check-in. Actions and behaviors of practice staff were evaluated to determine how POC results affected clinician treatment decisions. A retrospective review of staff recorded (EMR) data was assessed at baseline, after a 2-week run-in, and 4-weeks prospectively. This initiative was implemented in a small group internal medicine practice, treating predominantly low-income, Hispanic immigrant patients in Texas.

The vast majority of New Hampshire residents view the Republican Party as divided, while a smaller majority see the Democratic Party as divided. Slightly more Granite Staters say the Democratic Party represents their values well, while members of both parties are divided on whether they would like their party officials to be more moderate or more ideologically-driven. Residents have disparate opinions on the most important problem facing the country and most frequently mention political matters such as the President, partisanship, and division.
