Safety Climate Of Ab-Initio Flying Training Organizations: The Case Of An Australian Tertiary (Collegiate) Aviation Program, Yi Gao, Natalia Rajendran
Safety Climate Of Ab-Initio Flying Training Organizations: The Case Of An Australian Tertiary (Collegiate) Aviation Program, Yi Gao, Natalia Rajendran
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
A healthy safety culture is essential to the safe operation of any aviation organization, including flight schools. This study aimed to assess the safety climate of an Australian tertiary (collegiate) aviation program using a self-constructed instrument. Factor analysis of the instrument identified four safety themes, which are Safety Reporting Culture, Safety Reporting Procedure, Organizational Culture and Practice, and General Safety Knowledge. The responses of student pilots suggested that the overall safety climate of the subject flight training academy was healthy at the time of the survey. Further analyses found that perceptions of students of different year groups on Reporting Culture …

Emotions Involved In Shopping At The Airport, Alexis D. Tymkiw
Emotions Involved In Shopping At The Airport, Alexis D. Tymkiw
The Catalyst
This paper examines the emotional motivations that drive consumers to shop at airport retailers. Airport retailing is a rapidly growing segment as airports continue to expand retail areas and the number of passengers increase each year. With larger retail areas, airports are beginning to resemble shopping areas. However, with higher prices and consumers experiencing time and space constraints, the airport is a very unique shopping environment. This paper explored two unique emotional motivations for shopping at airports: (1) to escape the stress of travel and (2) to eliminate boredom. Analysis of the in-depth interviews led to the development of four …

Effect Of Soil Saturation On Denitrification In A Grassland Soil, Gp Matthews, L Cardenas, R Bol, D Lewicka-Szczebak, A Gregory, W Whalley, T Misselbrook, D Scholefield, R Well
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is of major importance as a greenhouse gas and precursor of ozone (O3) destruction in the stratosphere mostly produced in soils. The soil-emitted N2O is generally predominantly derived from denitrification and, to a smaller extent, nitrification, both processes controlled by environmental factors and their interactions, and are influenced by agricultural management. Soil water content expressed as water-filled pore space (WFPS) is a major controlling factor of emissions and its interaction with compaction, has not been studied at the micropore scale. A laboratory incubation was carried out at different saturation levels for a grassland soil and emissions of …
Creating Critical Readers And Responders Using The Common Core State Standards, Robin Jocius, Elizabeth Self, Summer Wood
Creating Critical Readers And Responders Using The Common Core State Standards, Robin Jocius, Elizabeth Self, Summer Wood
The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction
In this article, we offer a framework that supports teachers as they create opportunities for students to become critical readers and responders. With the Critical Reader and Responder (or CR2) Framework, teachers can use their understandings of readers, texts, and tasks as entry points for planning critical literacy response activities that meet Common Core State Standards (CCSS). We provide specific examples of how elementary teachers, faced with a myriad of constraints in their instructional planning, can use the framework to meet CCSS and prepare students to be critical readers in and out of the classroom.
Searching Infinity For Authentic Form: The Problem Of Memoir, Annmarie Lynn Dill
Searching Infinity For Authentic Form: The Problem Of Memoir, Annmarie Lynn Dill
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of the genre of memoir specifically examining the language used to define, describe, and critique the genre, focusing on the ways the language undermines memoir’s generic value. Since the 1990’s memoir has become increasingly popular, but lacks much academic investigation or critique into the conventions of the genre, though it has amassed much criticism. The genre’s rhetorical situation is at odds with general academic standards because inquiry must come before conclusive evaluations. To bridge this gap in scholarship, I have used methods of rhetorical criticism to analyze the definitions of memoir produced by five …
The Corporation As Sovereign, Allison D. Garrett
The Corporation As Sovereign, Allison D. Garrett
Maine Law Review
In the past two hundred years, sovereignty devolved from the monarch to the people in many countries; in our lifetimes, it has devolved in several significant ways from the people to the corporation. We are witnesses to the erosion of traditional Westphalian concepts of sovereignty, where the chess game of international politics is played out by nation-states, each governing a certain geographic area and group of people. Eulogies for the nation-state often cite globalization as the cause of death. The causa mortis is characterized by the increase in the power and normative influence of supranational organizations, such as the United …

Adding Machine: A Musical, Otterbein University Department Of Theatre And Dance
2017-2018 Season
Mr. Zero is the eternal "little man," shallow yet possessing some dignity, who murders his boss when he learns that, after twenty-five years of being a bookkeeper, he is to be replaced by an adding machine. Condemned to death despite his piteous stream-of-consciousness appeal to the jury, he is executed and appears next in the Elysian Fields, where he meets and enjoys a brief idyll with Daisy, his deceased co-worker, whose love he had secretly desired.

Epidemiological data indicate that risk behaviors are among the leading causes of adolescent morbidity and mortality worldwide. Consistent with this, laboratory-based studies of age differences in risk behavior allude to a peak in adolescence, suggesting that adolescents demonstrate a heightened propensity, or inherent inclination, to take risks. Unlike epidemiological reports, studies of risk taking propensity have been limited to Western samples, leaving questions about the extent to which heightened risk taking propensity is an inherent or culturally constructed aspect of adolescence. In the present study, age patterns in risk-taking propensity (using two laboratory tasks: the Stoplight and the BART) and …

Driving Rvpark/Campground Selection: A Grounded Theory Approach, Aj Templeton, Jill Fjelstul, Kimberly Severt, Yeon Ho Shin
Journal of Tourism Insights
The ability to “provide almost unrestricted land travel” (Prideaux & Carson, 2003, p. 307) has made drive tourism popular for tourists. A considerable sub-sector of the drive tourism industry is that of the multi-billion-dollar recreational vehicle industry (RV). Minimal academic research has been conducted on this important sub-sector of the drive tourism industry. This study builds upon previous research towards a further understanding of the RV consumer. A grounded theory approach was used to drive the direction of the research for this study. Given the scope of the data and studies that have been done regarding RV industry, this study …

Indigenous Rights Education (Ire): Indigenous Knowledge Systems And Transformative Human Rights In The Peruvian Andes, Elizabeth Sumida Huaman
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This article focuses on the relationship between Indigenous places, rights, and education. In the context of the Peruvian Andes, historical ideological impositions reveal the trajectory of environmental exploitation, which have contributed to major ecological threats that collectively contribute to the aggressive re-making of the Andean world as sacrificed lands. With a focus on Quechua peoples, the link between Indigenous knowledge systems and human rights education is explored. Drawing from discourses of Indigenous rights, place, rights, and transformative human rights education, Indigenous rights education (IRE) is proposed.

All In - And More! Gambling In The James Bond Films, Pauliina Raento
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Scholarly analysis of gambling in the James Bond films is rare, despite the multitude of topics in Bondology and the fictional agent’s global fame. The odd commentary in gambling scholarship criticizes the franchise from the perspective of harm prevention. This article counters both groups of scholars with a qualitative interpretation of Bond’s gambling habits and the role of gambling and risk taking in the film series. A basic toolkit of visual methodologies is applied to the 24 EON-produced Bond films released in 1962–2015. The examination shows the critical importance of gambling to character identity, power hierarchies and communication, atmosphere, and …
Everyday Tactics And The Carnavalesque: New Lenses For Viewing Resistance In Preschool, Joseph Tobin
Everyday Tactics And The Carnavalesque: New Lenses For Viewing Resistance In Preschool, Joseph Tobin
Occasional Paper Series
Tobin builds upon Steve Schultz's argument that young children’s resisting authority in preschool is a rehearsal or training ground for resisting authority later in life. Using this perspective, this article turns to theories of power and resistance to help us understand everyday events in preschools, and to suggest implications for the choices we make as adults who work with young children.
Mapping The World: Facts And Meaning In Adjudication And Mediation, Robert Rubinson
Mapping The World: Facts And Meaning In Adjudication And Mediation, Robert Rubinson
Maine Law Review
This Article explores what is and what is not in adjudication and mediation, thus illuminating the profound differences between these two processes. The Article does this work in four parts. First, it offers an analysis of cognitive mapmaking and its inevitability in constructing meaning. It then explores how adjudication defines meaning in a particular way. This Article then conducts a comparable analysis of mediation. Finally, it focuses on the bridging function attorneys play between the worlds of mediation and adjudication in light of the Author’s analysis and the practical implications of this function.

Bacille Calmette-Guérin Vaccine-Induced Tuberculous Hip Osteomyelitis In An Infant : Case Report, Mohammed S. Al-Azri, Jazel Manarang, Yaqoub
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
To this day, tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a significant global health burden. The World Health Organization’s Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) recommends the bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine for infants to protect against the haematogenous spread of primary TB and other more severe types of TB infection. We report an eight-month-old boy who presented to the Armed Forces Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2015 with a one-month history of intermittent fever associated with a limited range of motion in the right hip area. He was up-to-date with his EPI vaccinations and had no history of exposure to individuals with TB infections. …

Why do some forests produce biomass more efficiently than others? Variations in Carbon Use Efficiency (CUE: total Net Primary Production (NPP)/ Gross Primary Production (GPP)) may be due to changes in wood residence time (Biomass/NPPwood), temperature, or soil nutrient status. We tested these hypotheses in 14, one ha plots across Amazonian and Andean forests where we measured most key components of net primary production (NPP: wood, fine roots, and leaves) and autotrophic respiration (Ra; wood, rhizosphere, and leaf respiration). We found that lower fertility sites were less efficient at producing biomass and had higher rhizosphere respiration, …

The Anti-Hero Perspective Of Sebastián Silva’S The Maid, Amber Bradley
The Anti-Hero Perspective Of Sebastián Silva’S The Maid, Amber Bradley
Views from Below: The Underdog in Contemporary Latin American and Spanish Film
Many contemporary Latin American films portray a character or a protagonist that strives to bring in an audience to emphasize the “underdog” and their role in society. In Sebastián Silva’s Chilean film, The Maid (2009), Raquel is a maid and nanny, who achieves the exact opposite throughout the movie. This servant’s societal perspectives concerning distinct classes and gender roles are shown through her photographs and passive aggressive actions towards some of the family members and the other women, who are hired to help her lighten the housework of the home. Raquel’s attitude, mistreatment and tricks demonstrate her apparent desire to …
