Mourning And Melancholy In Hisham Matar's In The Country Of Men And Anatomy Of A Disappearance, John C. Hawley
Mourning And Melancholy In Hisham Matar's In The Country Of Men And Anatomy Of A Disappearance, John C. Hawley
English
In a recent study of masculine identity in the fiction of the Arab East since 1967, Samira Aghacy analyzes those novels that "possess an underlying political awareness revealing the centrality of political life in the fiction of the Arab East and the precedence of collective over private issues" (Aghacy, 7). Hisham Matar, though, has chosen to work against the grain and to shrink the political down to the personal; politics remain almost unseen, ghost-like, something his protagonists cannot comprehend or fully see. 1 Muhammad Siddiq famously notes that "any writer can ill afford to remain uninvolved and merely watch history …
Examining Diabetes, Depression And Suicide In Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Kimberly Morton
Examining Diabetes, Depression And Suicide In Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Kimberly Morton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rates of suicide in the United States are highest in middle-aged and older adults compared to younger age groups. These rates are alarming and point to the need for suicide prevention research in middle-aged and older adult populations. Depression is the most well-established independent risk factor for death by suicide. Some health conditions are also associated with risk of suicide above and beyond depression. Diabetes is often co-morbid with depression (clinical and subclinical depression). However, research examining diabetes and risk of suicide is less clear. In the current study, the first aim was to examine diabetes, vision impairment and depressive …
Fashioning A Soldier: Male Clothing, Union Volunteers, And The Adaptation Of A Soldierly Image, Robert W. Novak
Fashioning A Soldier: Male Clothing, Union Volunteers, And The Adaptation Of A Soldierly Image, Robert W. Novak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite hundreds of images of Union soldiers and countless accounts by veterans of their appearance during the Civil War, little is known as to how and why the soldiers looked the way they did throughout the conflict. The generalized image that emerges from the war centers around the four-button fatigue blouse prescribed in the 1861 regulations that was issued to every Union soldier at some point during the war. In understanding the origins of the fatigue blouse's design and the impact it had on the image of the ideal soldier in America through the end of the nineteenth century, greater …
Effect Of Individual Cultural Speeches On Accuracy And Cultural Content Knowledge Of Intermediate Spanish Students, Guadalupe Madrid
Effect Of Individual Cultural Speeches On Accuracy And Cultural Content Knowledge Of Intermediate Spanish Students, Guadalupe Madrid
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This quantitative study completed at an American university in Spring 2014 in intermediate Spanish classes measured if two individual cultural speeches (ICS tasks) had an effect not only on second language (L2) students' accuracy in Spanish during the oral presentation, but also their cultural content knowledge when answering the culture section of the final exam. The ICS task was presented in Spanish, orally without reading, so that students had the opportunity to speak Spanish and share cultural content knowledge with their classmates. The ICS task design was supported by The Robinson Cognition Hypothesis (2007), Ellis (2009) and Skehan and Foster's …
War On The Mind: Trauma And Coping Among Union Soldiers And Veterans, Kathleen Anneliese Logothetis Thompson
War On The Mind: Trauma And Coping Among Union Soldiers And Veterans, Kathleen Anneliese Logothetis Thompson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
"War on the Mind: Trauma and Coping in the Union Army," is a work of social, cultural, and military history and examines experiences of mental trauma in the Union Army during the war and among veterans in the post-war period. Without our modern definition of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Civil War soldiers had a very different view of how they were mentally experiencing the war. By looking at soldier accounts and the records of insane asylums it is clear that soldiers did have experiences of trauma and insanity during or related to their wartime service. However, those same asylum records, as …

Literatura Heterónoma A La Salida Del Franquismo: El Caso Del Primer Nacionalismo Marxista Gallego, Pablo García Martínez
Publications and Research
The Use Of Concentration Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (Amh) As An Indicator Of Reproductive Performance In Livestock Species, Adam Karl Russell Redhead
The Use Of Concentration Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (Amh) As An Indicator Of Reproductive Performance In Livestock Species, Adam Karl Russell Redhead
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reproductive success is essential for high levels of animal productivity. Low fertility has been identified as one of the main constraints hindering the productivity of livestock systems. To address this problem, several tools such as genomic selection and assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have been implemented. Two of the more common ART used to improve reproductive performance are artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET). The success of these methods is highly dependent on individual animal characteristics; therefore the ability to select animals that provide high levels of reproductive success is essential. The size of the ovarian antral follicular population (AFP) …
Exploring African Francophone Doctoral Student Experiences Of Student-Faculty Relationship, Nathalie Hoblebou Rouamba
Exploring African Francophone Doctoral Student Experiences Of Student-Faculty Relationship, Nathalie Hoblebou Rouamba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Graduate student-faculty relationships can impact student program completion, career path, attrition, success, and overall experience. With the increase of African graduate students in the United States, there is a need to understand the relationship dynamics between these students and American faculty. The existing research studies on African students tend to focus on student experience with discrimination, language difficulties, cultural adjustment, financial issues, isolation, and loneliness. This qualitative study explores the experiences of African Francophone doctoral students using a single case study and narrative approach. This research finds African Francophone doctoral student-faculty relationships are multifaceted, and tainted by uneven power in …
Cross-Cultural Conflict Transformation In Southeastern California Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Jonathan J. Park
Cross-Cultural Conflict Transformation In Southeastern California Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Jonathan J. Park
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Today’s world has become more globalized than ever before. The North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists is perhaps a division with the most ethnically diverse members in the world. This diversity is especially found in the Southeastern California Conference, which has more than 70,000 members with 175 churches and companies and many different ethnic groups. The Asian ministries alone have eleven different ethnic groups. These Asian churches not only face cultural differences between the first and later generations of the church members but must also deal with generational differences. These differences create conflict that need to be addressed.

Brief Exposure To Images Of Friends Via Social Media Leads To Higher Momentary Risk For Eating Psychopathology Among College Women Who Internalize The Thin Ideal, Erin Elizabeth Murtha-Berg
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the causal effects of brief exposure to images of friends via social media on state body image satisfaction and momentary desires to engage in weight-loss behaviors among college women and the moderating influence of trait thin-ideal internalization, appearance comparison, body satisfaction, and eating psychopathology on these effects. This was a 2-phase study. Participants (N=183) completed baseline measures online before attending a laboratory appointment. During the laboratory appointment, participants completed an exercise to identify the one similar-aged, female Facebook friend with whom they engaged in the most photo-related activity recently. Participants completed measures of state body image satisfaction …
