Performing (Female) Masculinity In The Early Modern Ibero-Atlantic World: An Analysis Of The Mujer Varonil In Gender And Genre, Nathaniel L. Redekopp Nov 2017

Performing (Female) Masculinity In The Early Modern Ibero-Atlantic World: An Analysis Of The Mujer Varonil In Gender And Genre, Nathaniel L. Redekopp

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The following dissertation on the trope of the mujer varonil[1] employs bibliographical research in literary criticism and historiography to identify and describe socio-historic attitudes about gender. In particular, this dissertation examines gender as communicated by texts that use the mujer varonil, or “masculine woman”, characterization to either praise or vilify exceptional female subjects in ways that highlight normative limits for masculine and feminine gender expression. Four texts are examined: a male author writes each and each represents a literary genre that was significant in early modern Spain and Spanish America. These genres are the hagiography, the relación, the …

The Role Of Argumentation In Hypothetico-Deductive Reasoning During Problem-Based Learning In Medical Education: A Conceptual Framework, Hyunjung Ju, Ikseon Choi Nov 2017

The Role Of Argumentation In Hypothetico-Deductive Reasoning During Problem-Based Learning In Medical Education: A Conceptual Framework, Hyunjung Ju, Ikseon Choi

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

One of the important goals of problem-based learning (PBL) in medical education is to enhance medical students’ clinical reasoning—hypothetico-deductive reasoning (HDR) in particular—through small group discussions. However, few studies have focused on explicit strategies for promoting students’ HDR during group discussions in PBL. This paper proposes a novel conceptual framework that integrates Toulmin’s argumentation model (1958) into Barrows’s HDR process (1994). This framework explains the structure of argumentation (a claim, data, and a warrant) contextualized in each phase of HDR during PBL. This paper suggests four instructional strategies—understanding argument structures, questioning, elaborating on structural knowledge, and assessing argumentation—for promoting medical …

Nonverbal Communication In Business Setting Between Japan And The U.S., Chi Dao Ozawa

University Honors Theses

As an increasing number of people travel overseas each year for tourism or business, they are likely to be involved in some form of communication with people of different language and cultural background. In such situations, Americans often experience difficulty in communicating with non-Americans because of language barrier as well as cultural differences. In addition to language and culture differences, one aspect of intercultural communication that is often overlooked and yet vitally important is the role of nonverbal factors plays in achieving effective communication. The purpose of this study is, first, to learn the importance of nonverbal communication and what …

Endonucleolytic Cleavage In The Expansion Segment 7 Of 25s Rrna Is An Early Marker Of Low-Level Oxidative Stress In Yeast, Daniel Shedlovskiy, Jessica A Zinskie, Ethan Gardner, Dimitri G Pestov, Natalia Shcherbik Nov 2017

Endonucleolytic Cleavage In The Expansion Segment 7 Of 25s Rrna Is An Early Marker Of Low-Level Oxidative Stress In Yeast, Daniel Shedlovskiy, Jessica A Zinskie, Ethan Gardner, Dimitri G Pestov, Natalia Shcherbik

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

The ability to detect and respond to oxidative stress is crucial to the survival of living organisms. In cells, sensing of increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) activates many defensive mechanisms that limit or repair damage to cell components. The ROS-signaling responses necessary for cell survival under oxidative stress conditions remain incompletely understood, especially for the translational machinery. Here, we found that drug treatments or a genetic deficiency in the thioredoxin system that increase levels of endogenous hydrogen peroxide in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae promote site-specific endonucleolytic cleavage in 25S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) adjacent to the c loop of …

Narrativized Ethics And Hiroshima: Harry S. Truman, Homer, And Aeschylus, Michael Palencia-Roth Nov 2017

Narrativized Ethics And Hiroshima: Harry S. Truman, Homer, And Aeschylus, Michael Palencia-Roth

Comparative Civilizations Review

Discussions of the atomic bomb and Hiroshima have to be deeply troubling for anyone. The natural inclination is to turn one’s eyes away or to remain silent. Avoidance and silence, however, were not valid options immediately after the Second World War and are not valid options today. The decision – or decisions, for there were many – to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and later Nagasaki raises issues of profound importance for the human community. It compels us to ask who we are as individuals and as members of a society engaged in actions with such devastating consequences. We …

Parallels Between The U.S. And Russia: The Trump Administration, Andrew S. Langmeier

International ResearchScape Journal

Russia has come up repeatedly in discussions of Donald Trump and the current U.S. administration. In time for the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Russian revolution, this paper aims to describe the importance and interconnectedness of image, information, hegemony, and power by exploring connections between the U.S. and Russia. An interdisciplinary approach drawing from fields such as cultural studies, linguistics, and anthropology will be applied to selected events and actions of the Trump administration. This study provides a method of framing US political events against Russian history and contemporary reality.

Only The Envelope: Opening Up Participation, Surveillance, And Consent In Performance, Vahri Mckenzie Nov 2017

Only The Envelope: Opening Up Participation, Surveillance, And Consent In Performance, Vahri Mckenzie

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

As a citizen I have limited understanding of the large-scale data gathering performed through the Australian Government’s Data Retention Act, with which most of us are, perhaps unwittingly, involved. This sense of collective complicity was the main impetus for the research project Only the Envelope, which combines research methodologies to investigate the ways in which we share personal information in the public sphere. The performance stage of the project was a work of live art that offered visitors the intimate experience of viewing an original video while being monitored by a “scientist”—both performer and research assistant—who invited viewers to …

Journalism And Mass Communication Textbook Representations Of Verbal Media Skills: Implications For Students With Speech Disabilities, Elia M. Powers, Beth Haller Nov 2017

Journalism And Mass Communication Textbook Representations Of Verbal Media Skills: Implications For Students With Speech Disabilities, Elia M. Powers, Beth Haller

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study examines representation of disabilities by conducting a qualitative content analysis of how 41 journalism/mass communication textbooks frame the ideal standards of verbal communication for media professionals. Textbooks are integral to students’ understanding of professional norms and may influence career decisions. Results show that textbooks rarely address the topic of speech disabilities, describing them as “roadblocks to success.” Instead, authors often address best practices in broadcast voicing and the value of projecting confidence in interviews and press conferences. What are the explicit and implicit messages for students with speech disabilities such as stuttering? We argue that such framing is …

The Political Dynamics Of The Middle East Beyond 2010: The Aftermath Of The Arab Spring, Sunday Esosonsed Ebaye, Timothy Ogbang Ellah, Peter Akpo Adams Nov 2017

The Political Dynamics Of The Middle East Beyond 2010: The Aftermath Of The Arab Spring, Sunday Esosonsed Ebaye, Timothy Ogbang Ellah, Peter Akpo Adams

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Beyond Tunisia, Libya and parts of the Middle East, the wave of protests emboldened by North African crises have been driven by similar demographic realities, failures of state policies and demands for greater participation, representation and democracy. However, these protests to some extent have failed to effect regime change in some cases. The Arab Spring which started in Tunisia was a historic moment in the politics of North Africa and the Middle East but its aftermath remains unpredictable. This research is an attempt to understudy the Arab spring and its political dynamics on North Africa and the Middle East, with …

College Students, Experiences On Smart Phone Technology Usage: A Qualitative Content Analysis Study, Fatemeh Jafarzadeh-Kenarsari, Parand Pourghane

The Qualitative Report

Besides many benefits of the cell phone technology, numerous arguments are raised on the different and important negative effects of such a technology. This qualitative content analysis study explored the common usages of smart phone technology, its challenges, and benefits among Iranian college students. Participants were 32 bachelor degree students who were recruited using purposive sampling method with maximum variation. Data were collected through 11 individual semi-structured interviews and 3 focus group discussions (5-8 students in each group). Data analysis was done based on a conventional content analysis approach. Data analysis resulted in 3 main themes and 12 sub-themes. The …

Book Review Solidarity Without Borders: Gramscian Perspectives On Migration And Civil Society Alliances, Edited By Óscar García Agustín And Martin Bak Jørgensen, David Feldman Nov 2017

Book Review Solidarity Without Borders: Gramscian Perspectives On Migration And Civil Society Alliances, Edited By Óscar García Agustín And Martin Bak Jørgensen, David Feldman

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

In recent years, migration has emerged as one of the most politically charged issues in global society. From the Bangladeshi government's harsh treatment of thousands of Rohingya families fleeing the Burmese army’s genocidal campaign against them in late summer of 2017, to the Trump administration's decision sustained attack on the new “sanctuary movement” and attempts to further militarize the southern border of the United States, news headlines and social media around the world are filled with images of repression against migrants, alongside impassioned calls for solidarity. Despite its ubiquity, the coverage of these events tends to remain rather superficial, making …

Diagnostic Divisions Of Eating Disorders: A Critical Analysis, Channah A. Leff Nov 2017

Diagnostic Divisions Of Eating Disorders: A Critical Analysis, Channah A. Leff

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to critically examine the diagnostic divisions of eating disorders as proposed within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). I focus on Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED), although there were several new categories issued in 2013. Using person-centered ethnographic interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and autoethnography, I collected qualitative data to highlight how disordered eaters perceive themselves and their behaviors in relation to their diagnoses. I recruited participants in Boston, MA from Eating Disorders Anonymous (EDA), a decentralized network of support groups …

The Palazzo Medici And Its Polyvalent Message: Cosimo De Medici Navigates The Shifting Meaning Of Pride, Lisa Morgan Thieryung Nov 2017

The Palazzo Medici And Its Polyvalent Message: Cosimo De Medici Navigates The Shifting Meaning Of Pride, Lisa Morgan Thieryung

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the Medicean ability to present divergent messages to different audiences through the manipulation of art and architecture of the Palazzo Medici. I examine several works of art commissioned and authored by the Medici. First, Donatello’s bronze David, located in the Medici Courtyard, is interpreted through the traditional Christian perspective as seen by the vicini, making the Medici appear pious, reverent, and religiously devout. This work is also interpreted from the amici point of view using ancient and contemporary authors to trace the development of ideas amongst the circle of Classically educated friends of the Medici. …
