Khaled Hosseini’S A Thousand Splendid Suns As A Child-Rescue And Neo-Orientalist Narrative, Abdullah M. Al-Dagamseh, Olga Golubeva
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns as a Child-Rescue and Neo-Orientalist Narrative" Abdullah Mohammad Dagamseh and Olga Golubeva argue that the novel contributes to hegemonic Eurocentric discourse by showing the superiority and benevolence of the West. In contrast to existing scholarly focus on Hosseini's portrayal of female characters, this article highlights how children of both sexes are represented. The authors' aim is to show how Hosseini's picture of children affected by war contributes to the neo-Orientalist and child-rescue discourses, justifying the foreign involvement in Afghanistan's internal affairs. Using Bacteria To Eliminate The Glycerin Glut, Jonathan Kilroy, Javier Sanchez

Crude glycerol is produced in large quantities as a byproduct of biodiesel production. Clostridium pastuerianum is an anaerobic species of bacteria capable of using glycerol as its sole carbon source. C. pasteurianum is known to convert glycerol into n-butanol, which is useful as a fuel additive. In this study, we measured the concentrations of glycerol along with compounds produced by C. pasteurianum, including n-butanol, under varying growth conditions. We found that doubling the initial concentration of glycerol had no noticeable effect on the ability of the bacteria to grow or produce butanol. Based on this finding, we intend to move …

Aims and Objectives To identify the factors that influence decisions made by health professionals when assessing the pain of native English speaking and children whose English is an Additional Language (EAL). Background Pain assessment in children is often poorly executed following acute injury. Whilst a range of pain assessment tools have been developed, little guidance is provided for assessing pain in EAL. Design Factorial survey design. “I Didn’T Know Anything About It”: Critical Pedagogy, Cultural Literacy, And (Missed?) Opportunities For Praxis, Erin N. Cue, Zachary A. Casey

This study seeks to theorize and contextualize what happened in an undergraduate senior capstone course focusing on cultural literacy and critical pedagogy. Through our analysis and critical dialogue we came to recognize that while each cultural literacy circle reported positive outcomes, and positive feelings from group members about how they felt participating in the circles, only one group took action in a material way meant to explicitly combat oppression. Nearly every group talked about oppression and the struggle for justice, but ultimately their work remained at the level of discourse. They thought about oppression, talked and read about oppression, but …

Material Forms: What Is Really Going On? Shaping Who We Are And What We Do, Vicky J. Grube
The Qualitative Report
Using visual and ethnographic methods the author forms a connection between materiality and the memories of childhood. The researcher begins by asking the question, “Can a studio environment create encounters between a researcher and preschool children that deepen understanding of culture?” To this end, the researcher engaged in sensory research practices through ethnographic methods in a preschool art studio. Through free choice art making, children were found expressing their emotions and demonstrating an awareness of adult culture. In particular, the researcher’s encounter with four-year old George was enriched through sensory participation and triggered embodied and empathetic knowing. As it happens, …

(Dis)Appearing Subjects: Managing Violence Through The Discourse Of Bullying, Rachel E. Levitt

In the early 2000’s, “bullying” became the new center of LGBTQ justice organizing. As part of this development a bullied subject emerged. This bullied person on whose behalf liberation was being sought took various forms from the bullied school shooter, to the cyberbullying victim, to the bullied suicidal queer. As the subtitle of my dissertation suggests, I focus on “managing violence through the discourse of bullying.” This marks a two part process: how the discourse of bullying manages to do violence and how it manages populations biopolitically. Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) were the first drugs used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Development of severe mitochondrial toxicity has been well documented in patients infected with HIV and administered NRTIs. In vitro biochemical experiments have demonstrated that the replicative mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymerase gamma, Polg, is a sensitive target for inhibition by metabolically active forms of NRTIs, nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NtRTIs). Once incorporated into newly synthesized daughter strands NtRTIs block further DNA polymerization reactions. The Physics First sequence has been known to increase competence and test scores of students, but how is science identity developed through Physics First? Particularly, this study compares the differences between males and females to better understand if competence makes a difference in how science identity develops through Physics First. The Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey (CLASS) is utilized to understand how science attitudes may reflect science identity. In focusing on the self-perceived aspect of science identity, real-world connections and self-efficacy categories in which science identity are evaluated. When individuals decide to adopt imported products, they associate these products with one or more places. Thus, consumers are likely to think about the new cultures, ideas, and behaviors associated with these places. How do we share embodied knowledge? How do we understand the world through our bodies? How can we effectively interpret and communicate somatic experiences to a wider audience? These questions emerged during a collaborative research project Let’s Improv It (August 2016, Plymouth University), which set out to explore how kinaesthetic empathy and multisensory perception help us to understand our own actions, intentions and emotions, as well as those of others. We additionally questioned the role and perception of physical and emotional touch within embodied knowledge. The National Reading Panel’s (NRP; 2000) claim that reading fluency is the direct result of phonemic awareness skills seemed to set a research direction for numerous literacy scholars. As a result, much of the reading fluency research examined the construct from a particular perspective seemingly informed by the NRP. The summative results of a generation of fluency research have subsequently defined reading fluency as a principal and predicative construct in children’s reading potential. The current study examined how children develop reading fluency skills and reports data gathered from a New York City elementary school. Specifically, the present work tracked the …

Today’s institutions of higher education dedicate significant time and effort to outfitting facilities with the latest technology equipment and packages and to providing faculty with training and support. Conversely, literature on technology implementation in higher educational settings typically focuses on procedures and timelines and makes little mention of how faculty perceive technology as a challenge or threat to their autonomy and professional identity. This literature review uses the terms “power”, “empowerment” and “technology” according to Foucault, Kanter, Rowlands, and others as the lens to examine connections between technology and faculty’s real or perceived loss of identity and autonomy. Effects Of Human Cadaveric Dissections In High School Biology, Brandi Pratt, James Martinez, Regina Suriel, Ellice P. Martin

This study was conducted in a suburban public high school, which had a connection to the local university, to measure the achievement of dual enrollment senior students using traditional hands-on (THO) cadaveric dissections compared to non-traditional (NT) virtual dissections of the human body. The outcomes of this study may assist multicultural science educators and administrators, students and parents, to understand the importance of THO cadaveric dissections compared to NT virtual dissections tools in learning gross anatomy. Also, noted is the importance of public and higher education collaboration to help bridge the science resource gaps between educational settings.
