Crude glycerol is produced in large quantities as a byproduct of biodiesel production. Clostridium pastuerianum is an anaerobic species of bacteria capable of using glycerol as its sole carbon source. C. pasteurianum is known to convert glycerol into n-butanol, which is useful as a fuel additive. In this study, we measured the concentrations of glycerol along with compounds produced by C. pasteurianum, including n-butanol, under varying growth conditions. We found that doubling the initial concentration of glycerol had no noticeable effect on the ability of the bacteria to grow or produce butanol. Based on this finding, we intend to move …

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper adopts an eclectic framework of semiotic, postmodern and postcolonial theories to interpret the representations of dressing as an aesthetic activity in Aya de Yopougon 1-3 and to investigate how Yopougon dwellers use their fashion sense to establish both a group identity and a form of everyday resistance. Characters’ bodies are remade, through dressing, to contain emotive qualities and to play symbolic functions with their everyday choice of dress. Their sartorial obsession is supported by psychic inferiority and pop culture; all characters engage in “disciplinary practices” for the clothing culture of their bodies that are ornamented surfaces for display.

In this dissertation, I propose an immuno-environmental model of biomedical phenomena in which human and nonhuman entities participate actively in vital material-semiotic assemblages with discursive and material capacity in which indeterminacy and uncertainty are always at work. In order to demonstrate my argument, I examine a variety of documents as sociocultural archives of expert and non-expert immunological knowledge practices, including scientific articles and medical studies, fictional and non-fictional accounts, social media, blogs and news reports. This dissertation investigates the relationship between the body of the translator and the phenomenon of mistranslation; more specifically, through Peter Handke’s narratives about translation, it proposes that the translator’s body be acknowledged and welcomed in the process of translation. By examining the ways in which his aesthetic strategies of mistranslation challenge the dominant conception of the literary translator as a disembodied figure, this dissertation explores Handke’s understanding of translation as a phenomenological writing practice that enables the body of the translator to emerge as a productive resource in the translator’s experience. This study explores tutors experiences in the teaching of local language in Primary Teachers Colleges in Uganda. The study conducted aimed at the teaching of local language in the Four Colleges in Uganda. It further looked at challenges faced by tutors in teaching of local language in PTCs. The study involved six tutors and one Deputy Principal purposely selected from the four Primary Teachers Colleges in Uganda. The same study employed qualitative approaches and exploratory case study design to collect data through observation protocol and one- on- one semi-structured interviews. Governments have been slow to address climate change. If non-governmental agents share a responsibility in light of the slow pace of government action then it is a collective responsibility. I examine three models of collective responsibility, especially Iris Young's social connection model, and assess their value for identifying a collective, among all emitters, that can share responsibility. These models can help us better understand both the growth of the movement to divest from fossil fuels and the nature of responsibility for collective action problems. This research saliently deconstructs the philosophical writing of a white, privileged male by five diverse academic peers by using a methodology of deconstruction to analyze the initial author's writing. Their reflects on his nascent perspectives address the stages of racism, mea culpa, the relationship between privilege, oppression, and classism, a feminist perspective, binary, and intersectionality. Further analysis connote for the need to deconstruct privilege in a literary context and to develop an autoethnography to fully delve into privilege beyond a superficial and neglectful narrative.

This paper critically reviews how feminist academic psychologists, social scientists, and media scholars have developed Rosalind Gill's generative construct “postfeminist sensibility.” We describe the key themes of postfeminist sensibility, a noncoherent set of ideas about femininity, embodiment, and empowerment circulating across a range of media. Ideas that inform women's sense of self, making postfeminist sensibility an important object for psychological study. We then consider research that drew on postfeminist sensibility, focusing on new sexual subjectivities, which developed analysis of agency, empowerment, and the possibilities and limitations in taking up new subjectivities associated with postfeminism, as well as who could take …

The rapid growth of China’s outbound tourism market has greatly contributed to today’s global economy. While destinations benefit economically from the activities of Chinese tourists, some public behaviors of this segment of the market have been criticized as disruptive to destinations’ social orders and are considered unexpected and annoying. The disapproval of these behaviors deserves scholarly attention as it essentially implies a socio-cultural disagreement on the appropriateness of public conduct. This study uses a transnational lens to examine the migration of Black Americans from Oklahoma to Canada in the early 20th century. Although scholars have documented this movement, they have not fully explored the vital and durable transnational connections among African American immigrants themselves. The use of family histories, newspaper articles, and immigration files show how black migrants searched for land and equality in Canada and attempted to build all black communities. This thesis describes a project to lead the members of Tachikawa Church of Christ to learn and experience the power and blessings of praying the Lord’s Prayer for spiritual edification and maturity. The program consisted of eight weeks of learning the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer and doing spiritual exercises. To provide a theological foundation for this project, I delivered eight sermons on the Lord’s Prayer with strong emphasis on the relational nature of the prayer.

Traditional social studies curriculum in the K-12 system focuses on United States history through a Eurocentric lens. The issue with focusing on a black-and-white version of history impacts people of color from ethnic backgrounds that are not equally represented in the curriculum. The research conducted for this project specifically focuses on the impact of this subject matter on individuals in a predominantly Latino community.
