Reducing The Complexity Of Equalisation And Decoding Of Shingled Writing, Muhammad Bashir Abdulrazaq Jan 2017

Reducing The Complexity Of Equalisation And Decoding Of Shingled Writing, Muhammad Bashir Abdulrazaq

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology is important in the immediate need for expansion of magnetic hard disk beyond the limit of current disk technology. SMR provides a solution with the least change from current technology among contending technologies. Robust easy to implement Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques are needed to achieve the potentials of SMR. Current DSP techniques proposed border on the usage of Two Dimensional Magnetic Recording (TDMR) techniques in equalisation and detection, coupled with iterative error correction codes such as Low Density Parity Check (LDPC). Currently, Maximum Likelihood (ML) algorithms are normally used in TDMR detection. The shortcomings …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This publication presents a novel concept for autonomous and decentralised M2M application service provision. The functional architecture of the approach is introduced as well as a detailed description of the system structure and process for application creation. Furthermore, this publication describes details about the proposed process for decentralised M2M application service management and formal description of M2M application services as well as independent validation of M2M application service configurations. Finally, the prototype M2M system realising the proposed concept is introduced and several scenarios are evaluated.

Federated Authentication Using The Cloud (Cloud Aura), Abdulwahid Abdullah Al Abdulwahid Jan 2017

Federated Authentication Using The Cloud (Cloud Aura), Abdulwahid Abdullah Al Abdulwahid

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Individuals, businesses and governments undertake an ever-growing range of activities online and via various Internet-enabled digital devices. Unfortunately, these activities, services, information and devices are the targets of cybercrimes. Verifying the user legitimacy to use/access a digital device or service has become of the utmost importance. Authentication is the frontline countermeasure of ensuring only the authorised user is granted access; however, it has historically suffered from a range of issues related to the security and usability of the approaches. Traditionally deployed in a point-of-entry mode (although a number of implementations also provide for re-authentication), the intrusive nature of the control …

The Impact Of Robot Tutor Social Behaviour On Children, James R Kennedy Jan 2017

The Impact Of Robot Tutor Social Behaviour On Children, James R Kennedy

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Robotic technologies possess great potential to enter our daily lives because they have the ability to interact with our world. But our world is inherently social. Whilst humans often have a natural understanding of this complex environment, it is much more challenging for robots. The field of social Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) seeks to endow robots with the characteristics and behaviours that would allow for intuitive multimodal interaction. Education is a social process and previous research has found strong links between the social behaviour of teachers and student learning. This therefore presents a promising application opportunity for social human-robot interaction. The …

A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami Jan 2017

A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis proposes a reference model and its computational core to support the creation of software applications within educational environments, which address Differences In Learning (DiffInL) and are applicable to both learners and instructors. This work differs from others in that the strength of this model resides on the re-usable character of the reasoning mechanism enabled by the computational environment. The starting point is the definition of agreed learning goals that the learner needs to achieve. In turn, the reference model generates personalised, best-practice teaching and learning materials, suitable for achieving the individual’s learning goals. This reference model consists of …

Effect Of Atmospheric Transmittance On Performance Of Adaptive Spd-Vacuum Switchable Glazing, Aritra Ghosh, Brian Norton, Aidan Duffy Jan 2017

Effect Of Atmospheric Transmittance On Performance Of Adaptive Spd-Vacuum Switchable Glazing, Aritra Ghosh, Brian Norton, Aidan Duffy

Articles

Combined suspended particle device (SPD)-vacuum glazing is a potential adaptive glazing for low energy building application. Glazing transmission is an essential parameter to determine indoor comfort level of building due to glazing. In this work, above 0.5 clearness index, a strong correlation between glazing transmission and clearness index (Atmospheric transmission) has been evaluated for south facing vertical plane glazing. Below 0.5 clearness index, isotropic diffuse transmittance was dominant and one single value of glazing transmission was found which is suitable for building energy calculation throughout the year. Below 0.5 clearness index, for south facing vertical plane SPD-vacuum glazing transmission was …

Novel Myopia Genes And Pathways Identified From Syndromic Forms Of Myopia, Daniel Ian Flitcroft, James Loughman, Christine Wildsoet, Cathy Williams, Jeremy A. Guggenheim

Articles

PURPOSE. To test the hypothesis that genes known to cause clinical syndromes featuring myopia also harbor polymorphisms contributing to nonsyndromic refractive errors. METHODS. Clinical phenotypes and syndromes that have refractive errors as a recognized feature were identified using the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database. One hundred fifty-four unique causative genes were identified, of which 119 were specifically linked with myopia and 114 represented syndromic myopia (i.e., myopia and at least one other clinical feature). Myopia was the only refractive error listed for 98 genes and hyperopia and the only refractive error noted for 28 genes, with the remaining …

West is a modern take on a classic - a contemporary riff on a San Fran-style club restaurant. Beautifully lit, flattering and gleaming, with a sweet champagne bar, cosy booths and smooth dark wood, West is a proper restaurant, a grown-up room and a reminder of why some things in life are too good to change. Our belief is that by working with great local food producers, we can both impact on our region for the better and, at the same time, give you the opportunity to taste the true West of Ireland. In a nutshell, we are all about …

Picture Books As Mentor Texts For 10th Grade Struggling Writers, David Willett Premont, Terrell A. Young, Brad Wilcox, Deborah Dean, Timothy G. Morrison

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine if picture books in high school classrooms could enhance word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Previous research has not fully considered employing picture books as mentor texts in high schools. Twelve participants from two low-performing 10th grade English classes were identified as low-, medium-, or high-performing students. Using action research, students were taught from an inquiry-based approach as the teacher read aloud picture books and asked students what they noticed. Students referred to the picture books as they were challenged to improve their narrative writing. Findings demonstrated that picture books helped secondary …

Chapter One Dinner Menu 2017, Chapter One

Menus of the 21st Century

Successful restaurants are as much a result of time, place and product as anything else. In many ways we had a lot stacked against us – we’re located in a basement, deep in the Northside of the city. But we had plenty in our favour too. We’ve worked hard to make our basement feel anything but that. By using Irish and international craftspeople we’ve transformed part of what was the former home of George Jameson, the whiskey maker, into a uniquely Irish dining space.

The Irish home has always been a place of conviviality, from the most humble cup of …
