Countries emerging from civil conflict in the developing world face numerous challenges that hinder reconstruction and peace building. These hurdles, many of which existed before the war and may have contributed to the civil strife, include poverty, unequal distribution of political and economic power, land disputes and exploitation or exclusion of groups on social, cultural, tribal or religious bases. Liberia emerged from 14 years of conflict in 2003 urgently needing to address many of these concerns, in particular the burgeoning number of land disputes and the looming threat they posed to peace, security and national reconstruction. A joint effort by …

Peninsula Medical School

The fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) causes chytridiomycosis, a lethal epizootic disease of amphibians. Rapid identification of the pathogen and biosecurity is essential to prevent its spread, but current laboratory-based tests are time-consuming and require specialist equipment. Here, we describe the generation of an IgM monoclonal antibody (mAb), 5C4, specific to Bd as well as the related salamander and newt pathogen Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). The mAb, which binds to a glycoprotein antigen present on the surface of zoospores, sporangia and zoosporangia, was used to develop a lateral-flow assay (LFA) for rapid (15 min) detection of the pathogens. The LFA detects known …

Serious mental illness (SMI) is disabling, and current interventions are ineffective for many. This exploratory study sought to demonstrate the feasibility of applying topological data analysis (TDA) to resting-state functional connectivity data obtained from a heterogeneous sample of 235 adult inpatients to identify a biomarker of treatment response. TDA identified two groups based on connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and striatal regions: patients admitted with greater functional connectivity between these regions evidenced less improvement from admission to discharge than patients with lesser connectivity between them. TDA identified a potential biomarker of an attenuated treatment response among inpatients with SMI. Insofar …

Design Of High Power Density Switched Capacitor Dc-Dc Converter, Boris Curuvija Jan 2017

Design Of High Power Density Switched Capacitor Dc-Dc Converter, Boris Curuvija

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Design and implementation of high power density and high efficiency dc-dc converters has been a primary component for reducing energy cost. Traditionally dc-dc converters are composed with silicon based technology that has limited switching frequency hence, increased volume of passive components and lower efficiency. This research presents a novel type of multilevel modular switched capacitor dc-dc converters with comprehensive design and multiple variant prototypes. Previous versions of traditional multilevel modular switched-capacitor dc-dc converters have a low switching device voltage rating. Additionally, the proposed circuits share all the advantages from the multilevel modular switched capacitor type converters such as soft switching, …

Intelligent Efficient On-Chip Memory For Mobile Video Streaming, Dongliang Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The growing popularity of powerful mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet devices has resulted in the exponential growth of demand for video applications. User experience and battery life are both crucial topics in the advancement of these devices. However, due to the high power consumption of mobile video decoders, especially the on-chip memories, short battery life represents one of the biggest contributors to user dissatisfaction. Various mobile embedded memory techniques have been investigated to reduce power consumption and prolong battery life. Unfortunately, the existing hardware-level research suffers from high implementation complexity and large overhead. In this thesis, we …

A Novel Batteryless Pacemaker: Design, Development, And In Vivo Study In An Ovine Model, Sajid Mehmood Asif Jan 2017

A Novel Batteryless Pacemaker: Design, Development, And In Vivo Study In An Ovine Model, Sajid Mehmood Asif

Electrical and Computer Engineering

A standard pacemaker can improve a patient's quality of life and may even prolong it, but conventional pacemakers contain leads and batteries, which have their own complications. Hence, the need for a pacemaker with leadless and batteryless capabilities is becoming increasingly important, as it reduces infection risk, device failure, and patient discomfort. Unlike other leadless pacing technologies, the proposed method in this work does not require a battery or leads. More specifically, a novel leadless pacemaker was proposed that harvest energy from radio frequency (RF), using a metamaterial-based rectenna, to power the pacemaker and stimulate the myocardium. Initially, path loss …

Intelligent And Efficient Embedded Video Memory Design In The Era Of Big Data, Jonathon David Edstrom Jan 2017

Intelligent And Efficient Embedded Video Memory Design In The Era Of Big Data, Jonathon David Edstrom

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The growing popularity of smart phones, tablets, and other mobile devices has created an exponential demand for video applications in today’s society. Mobile device users want their devices to achieve a long battery lifetime while also being able to display high quality video. When mobile devices display video, the embedded video memory in the device consumes a large amount of power. Therefore, in this thesis, we present multiple novel, power-quality trade off techniques for enabling good quality video output, while simultaneously enabling power consumption reduction in order to maximize the lifetime of the battery. The described techniques are designed using …

The Applicability Of Physiology For Conservation And Management Purposes: A Case-Study Using The Breeding Season Of The Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius Phoeniceus), Jessica Mahoney Jan 2017

The Applicability Of Physiology For Conservation And Management Purposes: A Case-Study Using The Breeding Season Of The Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius Phoeniceus), Jessica Mahoney

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Physiology has the potential to play a unique and important role in conservation and management practices by helping identify the mechanistic responses of populations to environmental changes, and providing physiological tools and knowledge that can be applied to help solve conservation and environmental problems. It has previously been unclear, however, if the increase of physiology in conservation and management literature has translated into the application of physiological tools and knowledge into conservation and management plans. There were two purposes of this disquisition: 1) analyze how physiological tools have been integrated into applied conservation by reviewing USFWS endangered species recovery plans, …

An Indigent Criminal Defendant Is Entitled To An Expert Of His Own, Fredrick E. Vars Jan 2017

An Indigent Criminal Defendant Is Entitled To An Expert Of His Own, Fredrick E. Vars

Articles

The Supreme Court recently heard the case of an Alabama death row inmate, James McWilliams. A thus far overlooked argument could save his life and help level the playing field in other capital cases. The Court in 1985 promised independent expertise. Now is its chance to make good on that promise.

Reprinting Russia: Anti-Imperial Discourse In Elias Boudinot’S Cherokee Phoenix, Jesse Ryan Wagner Jan 2017

Reprinting Russia: Anti-Imperial Discourse In Elias Boudinot’S Cherokee Phoenix, Jesse Ryan Wagner

English

While much work has explored American Indian print resistance to the encroaching United States, little scholarship has explored reprinting as a method of resistance. Building on Meredith McGill’s argument that reprinting is “legible as an independently signifying act” (5), this analysis shows how Elias Boudinot, editor of the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper from 1828 to 1832, selectively reprinted articles about the Russian Empire to foster an anti-imperial spirit among his readers. This analysis shows that Boudinot subversively played on the idea of Russia as the United States’ distant twin by predominantly republishing articles that portray Russia as cruel, weak, and an …

East Lynne’S Transatlantic Course: From British Serialization To American Theatre, Jordan Rae Olson Jan 2017

East Lynne’S Transatlantic Course: From British Serialization To American Theatre, Jordan Rae Olson

English

Ellen Wood’s East Lynne, a popular sensation fiction, began because of its original and insatiable British readership; however, the texts immediate and drastic reception into American theater confirms that this narrative is not simply an overly dramatic and unrealistic domestic drama. Although melodramatic, Wood’s text resonates with audiences because it is relatable in genuinely meaningful ways. The main protagonist, Lady Isabel, wrongfully leaves her family and spends the rest of her life in physical and emotional turmoil, however her endurance never ceases. Her character is psychologically compelling and easily accessible because she possesses truly human qualities and is a representation …

Collection And Analysis Of Volatiles Of Various Cultivated Sunflower, Helianthus Annuus, (Asteraceae) Germplasm And Investigation Of Some Aspects Of Host Selection In Adult Red Sunflower Seed Weevil, Smicronyx Fulvus L., (Coleoptera Curculionidae), Charithra Rathnamali Lokumana Jan 2017

Collection And Analysis Of Volatiles Of Various Cultivated Sunflower, Helianthus Annuus, (Asteraceae) Germplasm And Investigation Of Some Aspects Of Host Selection In Adult Red Sunflower Seed Weevil, Smicronyx Fulvus L., (Coleoptera Curculionidae), Charithra Rathnamali Lokumana

Entomology

Plants of sunflower germplasm putatively resistant or susceptible to the red sunflower seed weevil, Smicronyx fulvus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were used to test the hypothesis that the volatile composition of these two types are different and may influence acceptance/rejection of sunflower germpalsm by S. fulvus. At least 13 volatile terpenoids were released by the different plant lines, with some varying in concentration according to plant line, head maturity, and time of day. Comparison between resistant and susceptible plant lines showed differences in concentrations of less abundant compounds (3E)-4,8-dimethyl-1-3-7-nonatriene, α-copaene, bornyl acetate, β-elemene, β-selinene and germacrene-D, indicating that, one or more of …

Dancing Through Issues Of Class And Race In The Composition Classroom, Margaret Elizabeth Silvernail Jan 2017

Dancing Through Issues Of Class And Race In The Composition Classroom, Margaret Elizabeth Silvernail

English

Within the writing classroom, teachers (and students) tend to understand writing and rhetoric as a mental activity, rarely considering the body’s role in effective communication—even more rarely do they incorporate the body into everyday pedagogy. Bringing hip-hop into the writing classroom helps students see and learn how communication and rhetoric can be expressed through movements and words. It also allows students to examine issues related to race and other minorities who use hip-hop as an outlet for emotive expression and working through struggles they face on a daily basis. This pedagogy opens up deeper conversations about race, class, and the …
