Military-Related Ptsd And Working With Couples In Private Practice: Emotion-Focused Therapy, Psychoeducation, And Evolutionary Perspective, Sabina De Vries

Counseling and Guidance Faculty Publications (Archived)

The aim of this article is to provide information and treatment suggestions to mental health services providers who work with couples with trauma-related problems. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment dropout rates, evolutionary perspective of PTSD, emotion-focused therapy (EFT), emotionally focused couples therapy, and psychoeducational strategies are discussed. A hypothetical case example is provided to illustrate how psychoeducation and information pertaining to trauma responses and evolution can be integrated with emotion-focused therapy to work with traumatized persons/couples in a private practice setting.

Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes When The Distribution Of Effect Sizes Is Asymmetric In Two Class Experiments, Ekua Fesuwa Kotoka Jan 2017

Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes When The Distribution Of Effect Sizes Is Asymmetric In Two Class Experiments, Ekua Fesuwa Kotoka

Statistics

High-throughput RNA Sequencing (RNA-Seq) has emerged as an innovative and powerful technology for detecting differentially expressed genes (DE) across different conditions. Unlike continuous microarray data, RNA-Seq data consist of discrete read counts mapped to a particular gene. Most proposed methods for detecting DE genes from RNA-Seq are based on statistics that compare normalized read counts between conditions. However, most of these methods do not take into account potential asymmetry in the distribution of effect sizes. In this dissertation, we propose methods to detect DE genes when the distribution of the effect sizes is observed to be asymmetric. These proposed methods …

The Reproduction Of Hypermasculinity, Misogyny And Rape Culture In Online Video Game Interactions, Katherine Mary Bullock Jan 2017

The Reproduction Of Hypermasculinity, Misogyny And Rape Culture In Online Video Game Interactions, Katherine Mary Bullock

Sociology and Anthropology

Playing video games is a popular past time for many, and the introduction of online gaming allows people of various backgrounds to interact with one another. Yet, it is clear in the wake of incidences such as Gamergate which saw threats directed towards women, that gaming is still considered a male space that is hostile towards women. Through content analysis of online spaces, this research sought to understand how violence towards femininity manifests in gaming. Through Louis Althusser’s (1972) concept of Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) I explore how hypermasculine and misogynistic ideologies are reproduced in online gaming culture. It was …

Money And Ill Fame: Interpreting A Prostitution Hierarchy In Fargo, North Dakota’S Historical Red-Light District, Anna Marie Munns Jan 2017

Money And Ill Fame: Interpreting A Prostitution Hierarchy In Fargo, North Dakota’S Historical Red-Light District, Anna Marie Munns

Sociology and Anthropology

Many inhabitants of early Fargo sought economic opportunities in the local sex trade, and the intersectionality of class, gender, sexuality, and race was central to their varying degrees of success. Police Magistrate Court dockets, Sanborn maps, and Census records offer valuable datasets for linguistic and spatial analyses of prostitution-related crimes, revealing a hierarchy of sex work that differentiated between brothel, crib, and street prostitution. Gender inequalities also persisted within the hierarchy; male clientele were often charged and fined differently from female sex workers. GIS analyses reveal two distinct red-light districts, and highlight brothel differences and racial segregation within the red-light …

Transitions Of Care In The Veteran Population And The Effects Of Patient Education On Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review, Tuula Elina Kallioniemi Jan 2017

Transitions Of Care In The Veteran Population And The Effects Of Patient Education On Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review, Tuula Elina Kallioniemi

Nursing

The main focus of this systematic literature review was to assess research on care transitions in the veteran population as well as the effects of patient education interventions. A variety of care transition interventions were discovered in the literature. The majority of the interventions described in the research were based upon earlier research by Coleman, Parry, Chalmers and Min - The Care Transitions Intervention (2006), and Naylor and Keating - Transitional Care Model (2008). The large variety in patient populations, heterogeneity of interventions, and lack of protocols hinders direct comparisons between the care transition interventions. Apparent assessment methods for patient …

Are You A Good Partner? Using The Situation Judgment Test Method To Identify And Measure Romantic Competence, Ian B. Penzel Jan 2017

Are You A Good Partner? Using The Situation Judgment Test Method To Identify And Measure Romantic Competence, Ian B. Penzel

Psychology

We devised a measure seeking to assess competency within romantic relationships using a scenario-based paradigm that was informed by the situation judgment test (SJT) and emotional intelligence literatures. Pilot data revealed positive correlations between romantic competence (RC) and romantic relationship outcomes such as satisfaction and self-efficacy within romantic relationships. To further research of this type, we conducted a study examining daily romantic behaviors, feelings, and motivations, while also collecting partner and peer reports. Results revealed that RC was a significant predictor of romantic success as quantified by self-perceptions and peer reports, and some of these relationships remain significant when controlling …

North Dakota Wetlands: Changes Over Five Years In Prairie Pothole Wetlands And A Description Of Vegetative And Soil Properties In A North Dakota Fen, Kristine Mary Altrichter Jan 2017

North Dakota Wetlands: Changes Over Five Years In Prairie Pothole Wetlands And A Description Of Vegetative And Soil Properties In A North Dakota Fen, Kristine Mary Altrichter

Natural Resources Management

Wetlands provide ecosystem services such as water quality, flood attenuation, primary productivity, biodiversity, and provide habitats for wildlife. Land use conversions from natural to agricultural and urban landscapes threaten the quantity and quality of wetlands globally. Monitoring remaining wetlands has become increasingly important as degradation persists, particularly in agriculturally productive regions like the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North Dakota. Two studies were completed in the summers of 2016 and 2017 to contribute to efforts to monitor wetlands in North Dakota. The first study aimed to assess the overall condition of prairie pothole wetlands across North Dakota using the North …

Dynamic Modelling For The Path Tracking Control Of A Four-Wheel Independent-Drive, Four-Wheel Independent-Steer Autonomous Ground Vehicle, Karl Klindworth Jan 2017

Dynamic Modelling For The Path Tracking Control Of A Four-Wheel Independent-Drive, Four-Wheel Independent-Steer Autonomous Ground Vehicle, Karl Klindworth

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Robots that can be reconfigured to perform more than one task would be to consumers. The Four-Wheel Independent-Drive, Four-Wheel Independent-Steer (4WD4WS) robot is well suited for the role of reconfigurable robot due to its extremely high maneuverability and torque control. However, the nonlinear dynamics in conjunction with complex kinematic constraints make the 4WD4WS structure an extremely difficult control problem. As a result of this many who model the 4WD4WS structure make simplifications that aren’t realistic for a reconfigurable consumer robot. A 4WD4WS robot is kinematically and dynamically modeled using both the front and rear path angles and their respective coordinates. …

Obama's Conversion On Same-Sex Marriage, Robert Tsai Jan 2017

Obama's Conversion On Same-Sex Marriage, Robert Tsai

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This essay explores how presidents who wish to seize a leadership role over the development of rights must tend to the social foundations of those rights. Broad cultural changes alone do not guarantee success, nor do they dictate the substance of constitutional ideas. Rather, presidential aides must actively re-characterize the social conditions in which rights are made, disseminated, and enforced. An administration must articulate a strategically plausible theory of a particular right, ensure there is cultural and institutional support for that right, and work to minimize blowback. Executive branch officials must seek to transform and popularize legal concepts while working …

Exploring The Multidimensional Structure Of The Wasi-Ii: Further Insights From Schmid-Leiman Higher-Order And Exploratory Bifactor Solutions, Brittany Mcgeehan, Nadine Ndip, Ryan J. Mcgill Jan 2017

Exploring The Multidimensional Structure Of The Wasi-Ii: Further Insights From Schmid-Leiman Higher-Order And Exploratory Bifactor Solutions, Brittany Mcgeehan, Nadine Ndip, Ryan J. Mcgill

Archives of Assessment Psychology

The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence-Second Edition (WASI-II; Wechsler, 2011a) is a versatile and widely utilized brief intelligence measure by assessment psychologists in a variety of clinical settings. Despite the fact that a hierarchical measurement model is implied in the WASI-II Manual (Wechsler, 2011b) and the scores provided by the instrument, a hierarchical measurement model was not specified in the structural validation studies conducted by the test publisher. Due to this shortcoming, two exploratory factor analytic methods (Schmid-Leiman [SL] and exploratory bifactor analysis [EBFA]) were utilized to disclose the higher-order structuring of WASI-II variables. Results from both solutions indicated that …

Job Descriptive Index (Jdi): Reliability And Validity Study In Greece, Theodosis Tasios, Vaitsa Giannouli

Archives of Assessment Psychology

The purpose of the present study was the translation of the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) and testing it for reliability and validity, as in Greece there is not a valid and reliable measurement tool for job satisfaction (Aziri, 2011; Greenberk & Baron, 2013; Smith et al., 1987; Smith, Kendall, & Hulin 1969; Spector, 2008; Drakou, Kampitsi, & Helen, 1997). The sample was random, with the requirements being employees with Greek citizenship and not selfemployed. The sample consisted of 323 people, with ages ranging from 18 to 60 years old (M= 35.56, SD = 9.18). 47.3% were male and 52.7% were …

Tracking Radical Opinions In Polls Of U.S. Muslims, Veronika Fajmonová, Sophia Moskalenko, Clark R. Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This Research Note examines two telephone polls (2007, 2011) and three Internet polls (2016) to track opinionsof U.S. Muslims relating to the war on terrorism. Results indicate that a small but consistent minority (five to tenpercent) justify suicide bombing of civilians in defense of Islam, while those seeing the war on terrorism as a war on Islam have declined from more than half to about a third. This decline coincided with a decline in perception of discrimination against Muslims in the U.S., and correlational results confirm that perceived discriminationis one source of seeing the war on terrorism as a war …

Deep Models For Engagement Assessment With Scarce Label Information, Feng Li, Guangfan Zhang, Wei Wang, Roger Xu, Tom Schnell, Jonathan Wen, Frederic Mckenzie, Jiang Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Task engagement is defined as loadings on energetic arousal (affect), task motivation, and concentration (cognition) [1]. It is usually challenging and expensive to label cognitive state data, and traditional computational models trained with limited label information for engagement assessment do not perform well because of overfitting. In this paper, we proposed two deep models (i.e., a deep classifier and a deep autoencoder) for engagement assessment with scarce label information. We recruited 15 pilots to conduct a 4-h flight simulation from Seattle to Chicago and recorded their electroencephalograph (EEG) signals during the simulation. Experts carefully examined the EEG signals and labeled …

Informed Misdemeanor Sentencing, Jenny M. Roberts Jan 2017

Informed Misdemeanor Sentencing, Jenny M. Roberts

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

There is no such thing as a low-stakes misdemeanor. The misdemeanor sentence itself, which can range from time served to up to twelve years in some jurisdictions, is often significant. But the collateral consequences of such a conviction can be far worse, affecting a person’s work and home lives for decades, and sometimes for the rest of their lives. As a result of misdemeanor convictions, defendants can be fired from their jobs, barred from future employment in many fields, deported, evicted from public housing together with their entire family, and refused housing by private landlords.

Under most theories of punishment, …

The Dual Faces Of Misery, Arden Moscati Jan 2017

The Dual Faces Of Misery, Arden Moscati

Theses and Dissertations

Major Depression (MD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are psychiatric disorders that arise from dysfunction of the core human capacities for emotion. Sapience is inextricably bound up with the potential for feelings of regret, worry and concern. When these emotions lead to clinically significant impairment or distress, they may result in one or both of the disorders of MD and GAD. The occurrence of MD and GAD in the same person, known as comorbidity, is remarkably high; substantially higher than would be expected by chance.

MD and GAD have been studied since the mid-20th century, resulting in a substantial …

Relating The Finite-Volume Spectrum And The Two And Three-Particle S Matrix For Relativistic Systems Of Identical Scalar Particles, Raúl Briceño, Maxwell T. Hansen, Stephen R. Sharpe Jan 2017

Relating The Finite-Volume Spectrum And The Two And Three-Particle S Matrix For Relativistic Systems Of Identical Scalar Particles, Raúl Briceño, Maxwell T. Hansen, Stephen R. Sharpe

Physics Faculty Publications

Working in relativistic quantum field theory, we derive the quantization condition satisfied by coupled two- and three-particle systems of identical scalar particles confined to a cubic spatial volume with periodicity L. This gives the relation between the finite-volume spectrum and the infinite-volume 2 → 2, 2 → 3, and 3 → 3 scattering amplitudes for such theories. The result holds for relativistic systems composed of scalar particles with nonzero mass m, whose center of mass energy lies below the four-particle threshold, and for which the two-particle K matrix has no singularities below the three-particle threshold. The quantization condition is exact …

The double-polarization observable E was studied for the reaction γp→pω using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and the longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST). The observable was measured from the charged decay mode of the meson, ω→π+π-π0, using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam with energies ranging from the ω threshold at 1.1 to 2.3 GeV. A partial-wave analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina framework found dominant contributions from the 3/2+ partial wave near threshold, which is identified with the subthreshold N(1720)3/2+ nucleon …

On The Necessity Of Preserving Access To State Courts And Civil Justice: Rediscovering Federalism & Debunking “Fraudulent” Joinder, Andrew F. Popper

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

With nothing less than the survival of the civil justice system hanging in the balance, tort reformers and tort law defenders have been locked in a conflict that spans the last four decades. Courts and legislatures at every level (federal, state, and local) are besieged by those who seek to limit or eliminate tort liability, limit or eliminate accountability for personal injury, and limit or eliminate the capacity of those wronged by misconduct of every type to have access to courts, juries, and justice. Defenders of the civil justice system, a loosely coalesced amalgam of consumer groups, attorneys, and academics, …

The Miranda App: Metaphor And Machine, Andrew Ferguson, Richard Leo

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

For fifty years, the core problem that gave rise to Miranda – namely, the coercive pressure of custodial interrogation – has remained largely unchanged. This article proposes bringing Miranda into the twenty-first century by developing a “Miranda App” to replace the existing, human Miranda warnings and waiver process with a digital, scripted computer program of videos, text, and comprehension assessments. The Miranda App would provide constitutionally adequate warnings, clarifying answers, contextual information, and age-appropriate instruction to suspects before interrogation. Designed by legal scholars, validated by social science experts, and tested by police, the Miranda App would address several decades of …

What Can Vigilance Tell Us About Fear?, Guy Beauchamp Jan 2017

What Can Vigilance Tell Us About Fear?, Guy Beauchamp

Animal Sentience

Animal vigilance is concerned with the monitoring of potential threats caused by predators and conspecifics. Researchers have argued that threats are part of a landscape of fear tracking the level of risk posed by predators and conspecifics. Vigilance, which is expected to vary with the level of risk, could thus be used as a measure of fear. Here, I explore the relationship between vigilance and fear caused by predators and conspecifics. The joint occurrence of vigilance and other physiological responses to fear, such as increased heart rate and stress hormone release, would bolster the idea that vigilance can be a …
