Cocoa Polyphenols Alter The Fecal Microbiome Without Mitigating Colitis In Mice Fed Healthy Or Western Basal Diets, Eliza C. Stewart, Mohammed F. Almatani, Marcus Hayden, Giovanni Rompato, Jeremy Case, Samuel Rice, Korry J. Hintze, Abby D. Benninghoff

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Student Research

Background/Objectives: Chronic inflammation and Western-style diets elevate colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, particularly in individuals with colitis, a feature of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Diets rich in polyphenol-containing functional foods, such as cocoa, may reduce gut inflammation and modulate the gut microbiome. This study investigated the impact of cocoa polyphenol (CP) supplementation on inflammation and microbiome composition in mice with colitis, fed either a healthy or Western diet, before, during, and after the onset of disease. We hypothesized that CPs would attenuate inflammation and promote distinct shifts in the microbiome, especially in the context of a Western diet. Methods: …

Effects Of The Gut Microbiota On Placental Angiogenesis And Intrauterine Growth In Gnotobiotic Mice, Reyan Coskun, Zenan L Chang, Athziri Marcial Rodríguez, Haoxin Liu, Jiye Cheng, Yael Alippe, Michael S Diamond, Jeffrey I Gordon

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Environmental causes of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) remain poorly characterized. Here, we compare germ-free (GF) and conventionally raised (CONV-R) mice to assess the effects of the gut microbiota on placental/fetal development at embryonic day (E)11.5 (end of placentation) and E17.5 (near term). Pregnancy- and microbiota-associated changes in gene expression occur along the gut, including those related to angiogenesis, while bacterial composition and fermentation activity remain stable. Placental weights at E11.5 and fetal weights at E17.5 are significantly reduced in GF animals. Compared to CONV-R dams, the GF maternal decidua exhibits similar vascular histomorphometric features at E11.5 and E17.5, and numbers …

Introduction: SIRPα+ macrophages can mediate resistance to lenalidomide and rituximab (R2) in patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL). Evorpacept (ALX148) is a novel CD47 blocker that abrogates interactions between lymphoma cells and SIRPα+ macrophages.

Methods: Adult patients with B-NHL who had received at least 2 prior lines of systemic therapy were included in this single arm phase I study (NCT05025800). Evorpacept was administered intravenously (IV), in a 28-day cycle, until progression, at two dose levels (DL): 30 mg/Kg on day (D) 1 and D15 (DL1), or 60 mg/Kg on day 1 (DL2); rituximab 375 mg/m2 IV was given …

An Arc Of Time Through Crime: Representations Of Gypsies And Travellers In Police Killings, Coretta Phillips, Becky Taylor, Zoë James Jul 2025

An Arc Of Time Through Crime: Representations Of Gypsies And Travellers In Police Killings, Coretta Phillips, Becky Taylor, Zoë James

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper examines newspaper stories reporting on the killings by Gypsy and Traveller offenders of PC Leslie Meehan in 1960 and PC Andrew Harper in 2019. These media representations are used as heuristic devices to explore differing media discourses about this white minority ethnic group. Sixty years apart, these stories demonstrate supportive media commentary in the earlier period and more corrosive coverage in the recent period. Making a contribution to historical criminology and its consideration of race, this paper draws from extensive archival analysis and the extant literature. It highlights the political-economic significance of home ownership, the partial inclusion of …

Seeing Bias Through Eye Movements: Investigating Empathy And Engagement With Authentic And Altered Refugee Imagery, Reem Albaghli, Akshay Sunil Gurnaney, Nada Attar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study investigates perceptual biases in responses to Syrian and Ukrainian refugee images using human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques. We hypothesized that media portrayals might shape empathy and influence both biases and donation behavior. Participants viewed both authentic and face-swapped images, with eye-tracking data capturing pupil size and decision-making patterns. In Experiment 1, participants' eye-tracking data and donation behavior indicated higher engagement and donations for authentic images, suggesting a preference for unaltered images without ethnicity-based bias. Experiment 2 explored this further by presenting cropped refugee faces alongside neutral or intellectual art, asking participants to choose the art that best matched each …

Lessons In Longevity From Blood Stem Cells Under Protein Stress, André Catic Jul 2025

Lessons In Longevity From Blood Stem Cells Under Protein Stress, André Catic

Center on Aging Staff Publications

Blood stem cells are among the body's longest-living cells despite being highly vulnerable to proteotoxic damage, which accelerates their aging. To maintain protein homeostasis (proteostasis), hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) employ mechanisms such as reduced translation rates, high chaperone activity, autophagy, and selective protein degradation. These strategies mitigate protein misfolding, maintain quiescence, and preserve regenerative potential. Disruptions in proteostasis can lead to the elimination of impaired HSCs through differentiation or apoptosis, ensuring the integrity of the stem cell pool. Due to the systemic impact of the blood on aging and its experimental and clinical accessibility, investigating HSC proteostasis provides insights into …

Structural Variants: Mechanisms, Mapping, And Interpretation In Human Genetics, Shruti Pande, Moez Dawood, Christopher M Grochowski Jul 2025

Structural Variants: Mechanisms, Mapping, And Interpretation In Human Genetics, Shruti Pande, Moez Dawood, Christopher M Grochowski

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Structural variations (SVs) represent genomic variations that involve breakage and rejoining of DNA segments. SVs can alter normal gene dosage, lead to rearrangements of genes and regulatory elements within a topologically associated domain, and potentially contribute to physical traits, genomic disorders, or complex traits. Recent advances in sequencing technologies and bioinformatics have greatly improved SV detection and interpretation at unprecedented resolution and scale. Despite these advances, the functional impact of SVs, the underlying SV mechanism(s) contributing to complex traits, and the technical challenges associated with SV detection and annotation remain active areas of research. This review aims to provide an …

Jurnal Administrasi Bisnis Terapan

The Employee Management Information System (SIMPEG) is utilized by the Ministry of Tourism to support digital personnel administration management. Although SIMPEG has been implemented, its success largely depends on employees’ acceptance of the system. This indicates that system availability alone does not ensure successful implementation without an understanding of the factors influencing its use. This study aims to analyze the factors affecting the acceptance of SIMPEG by applying the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. A quantitative approach was used, with data analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Data were collected from 67 …
