Smoking Cessation Counseling Training For Wic Nurses, Melissa D. Myers
Smoking Cessation Counseling Training For Wic Nurses, Melissa D. Myers
DNP and Student Works
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death. An estimated 40 million adults in the United States currently smoke cigarettes (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012), furthermore, nearly seventy percent of adults that smoke want to quit (World Health Organization [WHO], 2011). Unfortunately, pregnant women make up part of this tobacco using population. Women Infants and Children (WIC) clinics are located all over the United States and attempt to help women and their children from a low socio-economic status (SES) with nutrition and overall well-being. Since smoking during pregnancy leads to multiple preventable complications, it is of vital …

The Influence Of Talker Expectations And Acoustic Variability On Speech Perception In Asd, Anders Hogstrom
The Influence Of Talker Expectations And Acoustic Variability On Speech Perception In Asd, Anders Hogstrom
Master's Theses
Speech perception is dependent upon the ability to map the sensory features of a speech signal onto the perceptual features which make up language (i.e., phonemes). A great deal of research over the past six decades has focused on how variability across talkers influences speech processing. Listeners are required to normalize the acoustic variability across talkers by continuously updating the mapping from the acoustic signal to phonetic representations. As such, processing speech from multiple talkers is cognitively more demanding than listening to a single talker. This processing cost appears to reflect, in part, the influence of listeners’ expectations that speech …

Multi-Dimensional Drought Risk Assessment Based On Socio-Economic Vulnerabilities And Hydro-Climatological Factors, Ali Ahmadalipour
Dissertations and Theses
Drought is among the costliest natural hazards developing slowly and affecting large areas, which imposes severe consequences on society and economy. Anthropogenic climate change is expected to exacerbate drought in various regions of the globe, making its associated socioeconomic impacts more severe. Such impacts are of higher concern in Africa, which is mainly characterized by arid climate and lacking infrastructure as well as social development. Furthermore, the continent is expected to experience vast population growth, which will make it more vulnerable to the adverse effects of drought. This study provides the first comprehensive multi-dimensional assessment of drought risk across the …

A common practice in Universal Newborn Hearing Screen (UNHS) programs is rolling up non-simultaneous passing results in each ear (SW_EAR) from repeat automated screens into a bilateral pass. This study aims to provide evidence-based criteria for best practices regarding SW_EAR screens. From January 2010 to May 2013, infants with SW_EARs results were prospectively monitored by MEDNAX-Pediatrix’s nationwide UNHS program, which combine inpatient/outpatient screens utilizing automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). The tracked audiologic evaluations of 16,129 refer infants (2,334 due to SW_EAR) out of the total infant population screened (2,492,314) were analyzed retrospectively. A high proportion of hearing loss (354/2334, 15%) …

Ontogeny And Systematics Of The Genus Cerophagus (Acari: Gaudiellidae), Mites Associated With Bumblebees, Barry M. Oconnor
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Nymphs and adults of Cerophagus nearcticus n. sp. are described from the nest of Bombus terricola occidentalis in California and phoretic associations with B. impatiens in Michigan and New York. On the basis of adult morphology, the genus Cerophagopsis is removed from synonymy with Cerophagus and retained in the family Acaridae, while Cerophagus is transferred to the family Gaudiellidae. The genus Rhypoglyphus is considered a junior subjective synonym of Cerophagopsis. The genera of Gaudiellidae are noted and the genus Trigonacoptes is considered a junior subjective synonym of Gaudiella.

This paper demonstrates a workflow used by the U.S. Army Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory to quickly generate high-resolution flood inundation maps nearly anywhere in the world. Previous research illustrates that hindcast and forecast streamflow for nearly any river/stream in the world is possible by combining global runoff datasets from land surface models (LSMs) with hydrography datasets from hydrologically corrected global elevation datasets. Recent research has also shown that flood inundation estimates are possible through combining resulting streamflow estimates with high-resolution terrain and land cover data. This paper provides a detailed workflow of how near global flood inundation maps runoff data …
