North–South: Poland And Brazil In Turmoil, Ladislau Dowbor
European Management Studies
Brazil and Poland are the countries presented as having best sailed through the 2008 global crisis. Clearly anti-cyclical policies work: instead of austerity measures, both countries maintained strong public investment, decentralized social policies and vigorous access to credit. More recently, however, our countries are facing the strong winds of financial globalization, with growing restrictions to the capacity of maintaining national economic policies. Comparing two very different countries is certainly challenging, but it does shed light on how the present global economic background affects us all. More recently, the economic and social progress in both countries has been suffering political disruption, …

In Paris, France, December 2015, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) invited the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to provide a special report in 2018 on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways. In Nairobi, Kenya, April 2016, the IPCC panel accepted the invitation. Here we describe the response devised within the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP) to provide tailored, cross-sectorally consistent impact projections to broaden the scientific basis for the report. The simulation protocol is designed …
The Effect Of Telling Lies On Belief In The Truth, Danielle C. Polage
The Effect Of Telling Lies On Belief In The Truth, Danielle C. Polage
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
The current study looks at the effect of telling lies, in contrast to simply planning lies, on participants’ belief in the truth. Participants planned and told a lie, planned to tell a lie but didn’t tell it, told an unplanned lie, or neither planned nor told a lie (control) about events that did not actually happen to them. Participants attempted to convince researchers that all of the stories told were true. Results show that telling a lie plays a more important role in inflating belief scores than simply preparing the script of a lie. Cognitive dissonance may lead to motivated …

A High Accuracy Microwave Radiometric Thermometer To Measure Internal Body Temperature, Michael D. Grady
A High Accuracy Microwave Radiometric Thermometer To Measure Internal Body Temperature, Michael D. Grady
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released heat illness data which highlighted that ~29 heat stress hospitalizations and ~3 heat-related deaths occurred every day during the summer months within the US from years 2000 to 2014. Heatstroke- the most severe form of heat illness which oftentimes lead to death- has been cited to be entirely preventable if a timely intervention is introduced. This dissertation uses microwave radiometric thermometry to perform wireless non-invasive internal body temperature monitoring which can enable intervention methods that help to prevent deaths associated with heat-illness.
Overall, this dissertation develops a comprehensive closed-form analytical radiometric …
Graph-Based Latent Embedding, Annotation And Representation Learning In Neural Networks For Semi-Supervised And Unsupervised Settings, Ismail Ozsel Kilinc
Graph-Based Latent Embedding, Annotation And Representation Learning In Neural Networks For Semi-Supervised And Unsupervised Settings, Ismail Ozsel Kilinc
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Machine learning has been immensely successful in supervised learning with outstanding examples in major industrial applications such as voice and image recognition. Following these developments, the most recent research has now begun to focus primarily on algorithms which can exploit very large sets of unlabeled examples to reduce the amount of manually labeled data required for existing models to perform well. In this dissertation, we propose graph-based latent embedding/annotation/representation learning techniques in neural networks tailored for semi-supervised and unsupervised learning problems. Specifically, we propose a novel regularization technique called Graph-based Activity Regularization (GAR) and a novel output layer modification called …

Qualitative family scholar Kerry Daly has called for more theory addressing understudied dimensions including religion, everyday experiences, and time. Herein we address all three of these dimensions as we empirically examine and theorize Ono relational struggles among religious families. We also explore what we term experiential immediacy–defined as the personal and temporal proximity to participant-reported lived experience. Based on qualitative analyses of in-depth interviews with 198 highly religious families (N = 476 individuals), we identified four types of relational struggles created by religious involvement: burdens, disunities, abuses, and offenses. We also offer a conceptual framework of experiential immediacy grounded …

Biomechanics (Chapter 9), Nicholas Stergiou, K.-C. Siu, Sara Myers, Ben Senderling
Journal Articles
Biomechanics is a discipline. A discipline deals with understanding, predicting, and explaining phenomena within a content domain, and biomechanics is the study of the human body in motion. Kinesiology, the parent discipline of biomechanics, is a science that investigates movement. Biomechanical research in human development focuses on evaluating essential movement patterns across the human life span. Biomechanical analysis is specifically important in quantifying the developmental motor skills and movement patterns such as walking, kicking, jumping, throwing, and catching. Biomechanical research also involves studying the movement patterns of injured and disabled people. Forensic biomechanists are invited to analyze evidence, clarify some …

Multi-Target Extension For Beacon Foraging Methods, Christopher Sanford, Ziong Jiao, Jae Oh
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
Robotic foraging is a complex problem that encompasses both the problem of exploring an area and retrieval of targets. To solve this, biologically inspired algorithms have been proposed that handle the scenario when only one target exists, but requires extension to multiple targets. In both scenarios there exists problems of robot allocation and congestion, and we analyze ways of optimizing both allocation and minimizing congestion for our algorithms. We demonstrate the results through parameterized metrics and compare the improvements in each scenario.

Since 2007, Boston has made tremendous strides in shedding its designation by Bicycling Magazine as one of the “Worst Biking Cities” (Zezima, 2009, p. A12) by designating over 92 miles of bike lanes throughout the city and introducing bicycle initiatives like Boston Bikes, the Hubway bicycle sharing program. These efforts have resulted in a dramatic rise in the number of cyclists in Greater Boston and a decrease in accidents involving bicycles ((Pedroso, Angriman, Bellows & Taylor, 2016). While the quantitative research has been primarily positive, a 2017 survey initiated LivableStreets and the Longwood Area Cyclists of commuters in the Longwood …

Construction Effects On The Side Shear Of Drilled Shafts, Lucas Caliari De Lima
Construction Effects On The Side Shear Of Drilled Shafts, Lucas Caliari De Lima
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Design methods for side shear of drilled shafts, including the resistance factors that should be applied, do not account for any specific construction procedure. Instead, design often relies on analysis of case studies which include all construction methods used in each geomaterial type (e.g. clays, sands and rocks), or on parametric analysis. Nonetheless, literature suggests that different construction procedures result in varying side shear.
This research investigated 2 types of construction: (1) slurry stabilization in sandy soils using bentonite and polymer products that are commonly used on the field, with exposure times from near 0h to 96h, and (2) temporary …

Theoretical Limits Of Stone Skipping, Charles F. Babbs
Theoretical Limits Of Stone Skipping, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
A simplified geometric model captures essential dynamics of stone skipping and allows easy computation of realistic stone trajectories under a variety of conditions. The model describes idealized collisions of flat, spin-stabilized stones with water, in which the water exerts sufficient reactive force on the stone to completely stall motion normal to the stone’s bottom surface. Motion parallel to the stone’s bottom surface remains unchanged. The necessary computations, including vector forces and accelerations, work and energy, algebra and trigonometry, are understandable by first year students of classical Newtonian physics. Comparison of this highly simplified theory with suitable experiments provides an interesting …

A new troglobitic harvestman, Relictopiolus galadriel gen. nov et sp. nov., is described from Olhos d’Água cave, Itacarambi, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Morphological characters, including male genitalia and exomorphology, suggest that this species belongs to the family Kimulidae, and it appears to share the greatest similarities with Tegipiolus pachypus. Bayesian inference analyses of a molecular dataset strongly support the inclusion of this species in Kimulidae and confirm the hypothesized sister-group relationship between R. galadriel and T. pachypus. A time calibrated phylogeny indicates that these sister-taxa diverged from a common ancestor approximately 40 Mya, during the Paleogene. The current range of …

Placing Children With Relatives: The Case For A Clear Rationale For Separate Foster Care Licensing Standards, Background Check Procedures, And Improved Relative Placement Statutes In Alaska, Courtney Lewis
Alaska Law Review
Policymakers generally agree that if a child cannot live safely with her parents, then the child should be placed expeditiously with a relative. Alaska’s current system for evaluating relative caregivers is overly complicated, creating unnecessary barriers for relatives and increasing the risk of mistakenly denying placement with relatives. This Article argues that Alaska should adopt a three-step approach to achieve better outcomes based on the American Bar Association’s model licensing standards, which are narrowly tailored to evaluate whether a child should be placed with a relative. Additionally, this Article argues that Alaska should repeal its state statute that gives the …

The Grand Compromise: The Ancsa Section 7(I) Settlement Agreement, Ethan G. Schutt, Aaron M. Schutt
Alaska Law Review
In 1982, Alaska’s twelve regional Native corporations finalized and executed a settlement agreement ending a decade of litigation involving Section 7(i) of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The 121-page Settlement Agreement is complex and covers a number of issues. The Agreement annually governs the distribution of tens of millions in revenue shared between the regional corporations pursuant to Section 7(i). This Article reviews the history of the Settlement Agreement, with emphasis on the negotiations that led to it, as well as the legal challenges regarding the Agreement since its execution. This Article also reviews the Agreement, section-by-section, and provides …

Justice Reinvestment In Alaska: The Past, Present, And Future Of Sb 91, Michael A. Rosengart
Alaska Law Review
In the summer of 2016, Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed SB 91, a landmark criminal justice reform law that implements a “justice reinvestment” program. SB 91 aims to reduce Alaska’s prison population, cut corrections costs, and then reinvest savings back into the state to improve public safety and reduce recidivism. It is 193 sections long and is likely the most substantial change to Alaskan criminal law since statehood. It also comes at a time when similar legislation, spearheaded by the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, is proliferating through the country. This Note overviews Alaska’s corrections problems that prompted SB 91, discusses the …

The Regulation Of Lactate Metabolism In Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Of Human Breast Cancer Cells, Denisse Tafur
The Regulation Of Lactate Metabolism In Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Of Human Breast Cancer Cells, Denisse Tafur
Doctoral Dissertations
Lactate is both a metabolite of glycolysis, and a component of several signaling pathways. Although recent studies indicate that lactate is a critical regulator of cancer development, very little is known about lactate metabolism in the context of metastatic cancer. Epithelial-to mesenchymal transition (EMT) promotes metastasis by inducing invasive properties in epithelial tumors. To determine whether EMT induces metabolic alterations, we have studied two epithelial breast cancer cell lines and their respective EMT-induced mesenchymal progeny for changes in lactate metabolism. Metabolic analysis revealed that EMT induced an enhanced glycolytic profile in mesenchymal breast cancer cells. In contrast, epithelial breast cancer …
