Enhancing Science And Engineering Programs To Equip And Inspire Missionaries In Technical Communities, Dominic M. Halsmer, Jon M. Asper, Ben Zigrang
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
Enhancements to science and engineering curricula are being considered in light of theologically-significant scientific discoveries, as well as the field application to form a coherent cosmology and worldview. In addition to including these ideas in current science and engineering courses, a new “Science and Faith” course is being developed to better equip and inspire science and engineering graduates for serving as “everyday” missionaries in their chosen fields.
This new course will focus on the knowledge and skills necessary for graduates to engage in fruitful dialogue with seekers from high-tech and highly-educated societies. Students will receive training in science-related apologetics, including …

The Final (Oral Ebola) Vaccine Trial On Captive Chimpanzees?, Peter D. Walsh, Drishya Kurup, Dana L. Hasselschwert, Christoph Wirblich, Jason E. Goetzmann, Matthias J. Schnell
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Could new oral vaccine technologies protect endangered wildlife against a rising tide of infectious disease? We used captive chimpanzees to test oral delivery of a rabies virus (RABV) vectored vaccine against Ebola virus (EBOV), a major threat to wild chimpanzees and gorillas. EBOV GP and RABV GP-specific antibody titers increased exponentially during the trial, with rates of increase for six orally vaccinated chimpanzees very similar to four intramuscularly vaccinated controls. Chimpanzee sera also showed robust neutralizing activity against RABV and pseudo-typed EBOV. Vaccination did not induce serious health complications. Blood chemistry, hematologic, and body mass correlates of psychological stress suggested …

Sociological Abstracts Vs. Socindex For Graduate Students In Sociology: Comprehensive Enough To Satisfy?, David C. Tyler, Jeanne Cross, Erica Defrain
Sociological Abstracts Vs. Socindex For Graduate Students In Sociology: Comprehensive Enough To Satisfy?, David C. Tyler, Jeanne Cross, Erica Defrain
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In 2005, EBSCO introduced a comprehensive database for sociology that could be a competitor for Sociological Abstracts, SocINDEX/SocINDEX with Full Text. Library science quickly produced a product review, a few general comparative analyses of the two, and a few comparative analyses of the databases’ utility for particular populations of researchers/students. The authors hope to add to this literature with an analysis of the databases’ utility for graduate students in sociology completing their theses and dissertations. The citation checking variation of the checklist method was employed for four random samples of cited items, and the authors’ sampling frame was …

T-Complex Measures In Bilingual Spanish- English And Turkish-German Children And Monolingual Peers, Tanja Rinker, Valerie L. Shafer, Markus Kiefer, Nancy Vidal, Yan H. Yu
Publications and Research
Background Lateral temporal neural measures (Na and T-complex Ta and Tb) of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) index maturation of auditory/speech processing. These measures are also sensitive to language experience in adults. This paper examined neural responses to a vowel sound at temporal electrodes in four- to five-year-old Spanish-English bilinguals and English monolinguals and in five- to six-year-old Turkish-German bilinguals and German monolinguals. The goal was to determine whether obligatory AEPs at temporal electrode sites were modulated by language experience. Language experience was defined in terms of monolingual versus bilingual status as well as the amount and quality of the …
