An Exploration Of Effective Community College Instructors' Use Of Culturally Competent Pedagogies, Aylin Bunk
Dissertations and Theses
Increasing diversity among community college students and the rising demand for a culturally competent workforce necessitate community college faculty across all disciplines to adjust their pedagogical choices to effectively serve diverse students while preparing all students for the new global era. The purpose of this narrative study was to explore what culturally competent pedagogies effective community college instructors use and reasons behind their choices. The study was conducted at a large community college in the Pacific Northwest. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with ten instructors teaching in different disciplines. In addition, the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) was used to …

Oral Health In Transition: The Hadza Foragers Of Tanzania, Alyssa N. Crittenden, John Sorrentino, Sheniz A. Moonie, Mika Peterson, Audax Mabulla, Peter S. Ungar
Anthropology Faculty Research
Conventional wisdom holds that a decline in oral health accompanies the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture, given increased consumption of carbohydrates. This widely touted example of the mismatch between our biology and modern lifestyle has been intuited largely from the bioarchaeological record of the Neolithic Revolution in the New World. Recent studies of other populations have, however, challenged the universality of this assertion. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of oral health among a living population in transition from the bush to village life, the Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania, to test the hypothesis that the shift from …

Shopping And Sociability At A Traditional Market In Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Elizabeth V. Trevizo
Shopping And Sociability At A Traditional Market In Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Elizabeth V. Trevizo
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
This paper examines the anthropology of markets and shopping practices in Mercado Pino Suárez, a traditional indoor market located in the historic center of Mazatlán, Mexico. The research objective of this anthropological fieldwork is to investigate how markets are a center for social relationships that influence shopping and consumption practices. Sociability between consumers and vendors is significant, as it represents the traditional market. The field research is a two-month- long summer project to understand why people shop at the market, with a major focus on shopping for food-related products. Interviews and participant observation, including participation as a consumer and as …

Tracing Virtual Advocacy Approaches For Welfare Policy Over Two Decades, Teresa Reinders, Samantha Church, Anne Statham
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
This paper focuses on the virtual efforts of several nonprofits to preserve “safety net” programs in the struggle with groups that view these programs as unnecessary or as dependency forming. E-mail messages received by the third author fell into 20 broad categories, of which four are analyzed here, messages often revolving around such programs as unemployment insurance, medical care and insurance, Food Stamp and other nutrition programs, and the Violence Against Women Act. The tone and content of the messages often varied with presidential administrations, the structure of Congress, and economic events, such as the crash of 2008. In all …
Stalking The Lesson, Ministering The Family: Critical Interventions Of African American–American Indian Family History, Sakina Mariam Hughes
Stalking The Lesson, Ministering The Family: Critical Interventions Of African American–American Indian Family History, Sakina Mariam Hughes
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
In 1900, Eva Shawnee, a Creek girl, enrolled in Hampton Normal and Agriculture Institute. Hampton aimed to uplift the black race through academics, industrial trades, and manual training. It opened its doors to Native Americans between 1878 and 1923; however, when Eva’s youngest siblings enrolled at Hampton, they registered as Negro. Traditional perspectives in American history, because of institutionalized racial hierarchies inside and outside the academy, provide challenges to the types of interdisciplinary scholarship that may address families like the Shawnees. Utilizing but transcending the academic sphere, this article encourages dialogue between marginalized groups and argues that they have more …

Eggs produced by the mature female parasite are responsible for the pathogenesis and transmission of schistosomiasis. Female schistosomes rely on a unique male-induced strategy to accomplish reproductive development, a process that is incompletely understood. Here we map detailed transcriptomic profiles of male and female Schistosoma japonicum across eight time points throughout the sexual developmental process from pairing to maturation. The dynamic gene expression pattern data reveal clear sex-related characteristics, indicative of an unambiguous functional division between males and females during their interplay. Cluster analysis, in situ hybridization and RNAi assays indicate that males likely use biogenic amine neurotransmitters through the …

Cross-Cousin Marriage Among The Yanomamö Shows Evidence Of Parent–Offspring Conflict And Mate Competition Between Brothers, Napoleon A. Chagnon, Robert F. Lynch, Mary K. Shenk, Raymond Hames, Mark V. Flinn
Flinn
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Marriage in many traditional societies often concerns the institutionalized exchange of reproductive partners among groups of kin. Such exchanges most often involve cross-cousins—marriage with the child of a parent’s opposite-sex sibling—but it is unclear who benefits from these exchanges. Here we analyze the fitness consequences of marrying relatives among the Yanomamo¨ from the Amazon. When individuals marry close kin, we find that (i) both husbands and wives have slightly lower fertility; (ii) offspring suffer from inbreeding depression; (iii) parents have more grandchildren; and (iv) siblings, especially brothers, benefit when their opposite-sex siblings marry relatives but not when their same-sex siblings …
“It’S Not A Life Or Death Thing”: A Grounded Theory Study Of Smoking Decisions Among Chinese Americans, Yu Lu
The Qualitative Report
Smoking results in a high mortality rate for Chinese Americans. Little is known, however, about the decisions members of this group make that lead to these unhealthy behaviors. Examining smoking decisions could help us understand these choices as well as develop effective prevention strategies. This grounded theory study was conducted to understand Chinese Americans’ smoking decisions. Fifty-four individual interviews and three focus groups were conducted with Chinese Americans of different smoking statuses. The findings describe five smoking decisions including the trajectory of these behaviors. Optimistic bias is identified as one of the main reasons that regular smokers decide not to …

Freedom Of Artistic Creation In The Constitution Of The Republic Of Poland, Filip Cieply
Freedom Of Artistic Creation In The Constitution Of The Republic Of Poland, Filip Cieply
ConLawNOW
The question of freedom of artistic creation, and of its integral aspect at the boundaries of art, is both intriguing in theoretical terms and significant in virtually every age and culture. Limitation of freedom of artistic creation is an issue that crosses various paradigms, hierarchies of values and normative systems.
The aim of this paper is to give an introduction to the interpretation of Article 73 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, which provides for freedom of artistic expression. In particular, the focus is put on the constitutional basis for legally limiting the freedom of artistic creation.

2005 – An Ethnogeography Of Salinan And Northern Chumas Communities – 1769 To 1810
Government Documents and Publications
This report provides a new understanding of the Salinan and Northern Chumash communities as they might have existed at Spanish contact, between 1769 and 1810. It relies mainly upon evidence in the registers of baptism, confirmation, marriage, and burial for missions San Antonio, San Luis Obispo, and San Miguel. Although the registers contain the names of 205 rancherías (villages and multi-village communities), they contain few direct clues about the placement of those rancherías on the landscape. To aid locational identification, all of the J.P. Harrington notes on the Salinan and Chumash were reviewed. The present study is the next level …

Exploring Whites' Recognition Of Racial Microaggressions Through An Existential Lens, Ashley Gold Parker
Exploring Whites' Recognition Of Racial Microaggressions Through An Existential Lens, Ashley Gold Parker
Dissertations
Substantive evidence demonstrates that targets of racial discrimination (i.e., people of color) are acutely aware of racial microaggressions when they occur. Far less research has explored the interpretive experiences of perpetrators and bystanders of race-related prejudice and discrimination, individuals who are typically White. The current study sought to identify personal and situational factors that affect Whites’ recognition of racial microaggressions. The sample consisted of self-identified exclusively White/Caucasian adults (N=210) who completed questionnaires exploring Belief in a Just World (BJW), Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), and three facets of Ethnocultural Empathy (Awareness, Perspective-Taking, and Empathic Action). Participants were randomly assigned …

The Courage To Teach: From The Inside Out, Laura Foote
The Courage To Teach: From The Inside Out, Laura Foote
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
In contrast to God’s wisdom, earthly wisdom is rooted in earthly systems and the epistemologies that undergird those systems. A primary and powerful epistemic system is the educational system (Goldman, 2011) and particularly higher education, upon which much of man’s wisdom is built. Parker Palmer’s (2007) book, The Courage to Teach, challenges the commonly accepted wisdom of higher education’s focus on outcomes and “the impact of our society’s growing obsession with educational externals—including relentless and mindless standardized testing” (p. ix). Palmer offers a roadmap for reform that begins with a call for self-reflection and ends with a call for …
