(Ba)Ding, Ang Bato!: Queering Duterte's Drug War In Jun Lana's Big Night! (2021), Jenno Roquero
(Ba)Ding, Ang Bato!: Queering Duterte's Drug War In Jun Lana's Big Night! (2021), Jenno Roquero
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
Though there are studies around Duterte’s war on drugs and human rights violations, scholarship focusing on the relationship between Duterte’s politics and gender, particularly queerness and kabaklaan, is limited despite his frequent derogatory use of bakla, gay, or homosexual to demean rivals and critics. This article analyzes Jun Lana’s Big Night! (2021) through the Filipino concept of batak—intoxication, being forcibly dragged, and musculature—to examine the intersections of queerness, state violence, and survival in Rodrigo Duterte’s “War on Drugs.” Through close readings of key scenes, the article maps how batak operates as a framework for understanding the bakla’s shifting position: …

Graffiti, Neoliberalismo, At Tunggalian Para Sa Espasyo Sa Lungsod Quezon (Graffiti, Neoliberalism, And Contestations For Space In Quezon City), Harvey James G. Castillo
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
Cemented Republic: Infrastructure And Slow Violence In Jun Cruz Reyes’S Ang Huling Dalagang Bukid At Ang Authobiography Na Mali: Isang Imbestigasyon, Jonah Leigh E. Ramos
Cemented Republic: Infrastructure And Slow Violence In Jun Cruz Reyes’S Ang Huling Dalagang Bukid At Ang Authobiography Na Mali: Isang Imbestigasyon, Jonah Leigh E. Ramos
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
To read the novel is to read history from a vantage point, and to read Jun Cruz Reyes’s metafiction novel, Ang Huling Dalagang Bukid at ang Authobiography na Mali: Isang Imbestigasyon (2011), is to read unaccounted-for experiences of violence in spaces that house the spectacle of national infrastructure. Informed by concepts from environmental humanities and urban studies, this paper explores the intersection of infrastructure and violence in Ang Huling Dalagang Bukid. It interrogates the choice experimental form of the novel, close reads descriptive passages about infrastructure, and highlights corresponding manifestations of slow violence impacting humans and nonhumans alike. The …
Designing With, Not For: Reimagining Participatory Design With Rural, Indigenous Artisans, Daniela Chavarria, Beatrice Villari
Designing With, Not For: Reimagining Participatory Design With Rural, Indigenous Artisans, Daniela Chavarria, Beatrice Villari
ServDes Conference Series
Artisanal production is crucial in sustaining the socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental fabric of rural and Indigenous communities, supporting the livelihoods, identity, and collective memory of artisan communities. However, globalization plus market pressures marginalize these traditions, prioritizing external consumer expectations over cultural integrity. While designers have sought to support artisans through collaborative efforts, such initiatives risk replicating Western-centric frameworks that undermine local knowledge and reinforce power asymmetries. This paper examines how equal collaboration, rooted in trust and flexibility, offers participatory engagement while promoting equitable partnerships from a designer-activist perspective. Drawing on the ARTESANICO laboratory, an organic, practice-led design initiative in Colombia …

Preparing A Comprehensive And Accessible Design Ethnography In Complex Environments: Reflections Based On Case Studies From 3 Uk Nhs Emergency Departments, Wenbo Ai, Alison Prendiville
ServDes Conference Series
This paper discusses the ethical and ethnographic preparation methods employed in the initial discovery phase of a co-design research project, aimed at enhancing the blood culture pathway for potential sepsis patients in UK emergency departments across three NHS trust hospitals. Conducting thorough observations in such complex, busy settings within limited time frames poses significant challenges. Minimising disruptions becomes key, especially in high-pressure work environments. Elaborate preparation of observation methods leads to more productive findings and reduces the need for repeated visits, promoting mutual respect between researchers and stakeholders. This paper offers valuable strategies for service design researchers to prepare effectively …
From Affirmative-Technological To Critical-Humanistic Tech Trends: A Speculative Framework For Service Design Futures, Yong-Ki Lee
From Affirmative-Technological To Critical-Humanistic Tech Trends: A Speculative Framework For Service Design Futures, Yong-Ki Lee
ServDes Conference Series
This paper presents a speculative framework for service design education, practice, and research in light of emerging technologies. It examines the evolution of service design through stages, from its foundations to a “thinking” era, and proposes a model for “Service Design 2.0” that considers industry-led, human-centred, and information driven approaches. The paper explores future trends in service design practice, emphasizing socio-technical systems thinking and learning systems. Design research is discussed in terms of evolving user-designer interactions, moving toward symbiotic relationships where designing and using become intertwined. Finally, the paper advocates for a balanced design education that integrates arts, engineering, computer …

As AI technologies advance, service design practitioners should consider their role in the field, including how to integrate generative AI (GenAI) into their workflows. This study explored how service design practitioners engage with GenAI tools in the discovery phase; it was intended to enhance service design research with regard to GenAI and highlight its potential and future applications. Through a diary study, 26 service design practitioners participated in three design activities using a variety of GenAI tools and recorded their experiences and perceptions in diaries. The findings indicate that participants perceived the GenAI tools as effective for data collection, processing, …
Exploring Service Rituals For At-Work Recovery Toward Healthcare Worker Wellbeing, Ted Matthews, Kajal Khanna
Exploring Service Rituals For At-Work Recovery Toward Healthcare Worker Wellbeing, Ted Matthews, Kajal Khanna
ServDes Conference Series
Service design has increased its attention on healthcare services in both research and practice. Despite the promise of considering the wellbeing of all actors involved in these services, it is very much the patient that is ‘focal actor’, with healthcare workers (HCWs) often being marginalised in these processes. Concurrently, diminished wellbeing of HCWs is leading to burnout and in turn medical errors that seriously impact patients and the healthcare service system. This paper reports on explorative, transdisciplinary design research that makes the HCWs the focal actor of the process and looks to design service rituals as an approach to at-work …
Service Design And Post-Conflict Communities: Rethinking Tourism Services For Social Reintegration, Beatriz Bonilla Berrocal, Lucia Viganego Ballesteros
Service Design And Post-Conflict Communities: Rethinking Tourism Services For Social Reintegration, Beatriz Bonilla Berrocal, Lucia Viganego Ballesteros
ServDes Conference Series
After the 2016 peace agreement in Colombia and through the reincorporation process, communities of ex-combatants from the former FARC guerrilla group initiated their process toward reintegration into civil society. The development of projects that promote their reintegration identified tourism as a key aspect for economic success and reconciliation with Colombian society. Applying tourism activities as a means of supporting their economic growth and guaranteeing the subsistence of the peace dialogues between ex-combatant communities and civilians was the basis that originated many initiatives in this sector. The case of the AETCR Jaime Pardo Leal, Waka Promoviendo Culturas, and Caguan Expeditions exemplifies …

Wedding Rituals: Shedding Light On The Hidden Values Of Rituals To Design Better Services., Michalina Fidos, Mari Suoheimo, Jonna Häkkilä, Marja Kuronen
ServDes Conference Series
Service design often aims to create meaningful experiences, while rituals offer ways to structure their symbolic, emotional, and cultural dimensions. Understanding rituals in context can help designers co-create culturally respectful solutions that transcend boundaries. This paper explores how values embedded in wedding rituals can inform the design of more inclusive and meaningful services. Drawing on an international workshop with designers, we used a specially developed template to explore wedding rituals in a multicultural context. The study identified three overarching themes: the end of an era, patriarchy, and future prosperity. The mapping activity supported participants in reflecting on underlying rules, norms, …
A New Generation Of Collaborative Public Services, Daniela Selloni
A New Generation Of Collaborative Public Services, Daniela Selloni
ServDes Conference Series
This paper introduces the concept of collaborative public services, drawing on exemplary Italian prototypes. It begins by addressing the crisis of public services shaped by Dominant Service Design and outlines a first paradigm shift, where citizens move from passive users to active participants in global social innovation. However, this shift revealed limitations, often depending on the exceptional commitment of a few individuals. A second shift is emerging: collaborative public services sustained by a stronger role for the state and a participatory ecosystem that enables different levels of engagement, expanding involvement across society. The concept of a participatory ecosystem is explored …
Towards Decolonising Service Design – Ethical Collaborations Between Designers And Indigenous Communities In Vietnam And Australia, Francesco Mazzarella
Towards Decolonising Service Design – Ethical Collaborations Between Designers And Indigenous Communities In Vietnam And Australia, Francesco Mazzarella
ServDes Conference Series
This paper argues for decolonising dominant service design practice and discusses the need for designers to develop a certain cultural sensitivity to engage in ethical collaborations with Indigenous communities aimed at fostering social change and cultural sustainability. This is exemplified by ethnographic and participatory action research conducted in Vietnam and Australia adopting a range of co-creation methods to engage with diverse Indigenous communities. The paper proposes an anthropological approach for service designers to elicit diverse communities’ lived experiences and contribute to community empowerment. Going beyond the limitations of both top-down and bottom-up approaches to service design, this paper proposes a …

Forensic Anthropologists As “Social Workers For The Deceased”: Integrating Social Work Standards And Collaborative Efforts In Long-Term Unidentified Human Remains Cases, Amy Michael, Samantha Blatt, Jennifer Bengtson, Scotia Mullin, Juliette R. Bedard, Samantha Unwin, Jose Sanchez
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Forensic anthropologists working in university laboratories are often curators of long-term unidentified human remains cases. Here, we review how and why anthropologists can effectively move toward case resolution by drawing on literature and collaborative best practices from the field of social work. Borrowing from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) standards for case management, we detail five standards that can be effectively followed during the forensic anthropological case investigation to ensure culturally sensitive and victim-centered approaches to human identification. While the field of forensic anthropology has its own professional standards developed through a consensus body and shared governance, these …

Exploring The Correlation Between Pupil Distance And Myopia Prevalence: An Observational Bioanthropology Study In Surabaya, Anggitha Hayuning Kinasih, Dwi Martha Nur Aditya, Y Adhimas Setyo Wicaksono
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Bioanthropology integrates biological and cultural perspectives, thereby enhancing our understanding of human health across populations. Myopia is a significant refractive error affecting potentially 2.5 billion people globally by the end of the decade. Bioanthropological theories suggest that pupil diameter and distance contribute to axial elongation and the progression of myopia. Nevertheless, current literature lacks empirical validation through rigorous hypothesis testing, highlighting a gap in comprehension. The research explores the relationship between pupil distance and the incidence of myopia via empirical assessments in Surabaya. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted, which involved pupil distance measurements and eye refraction assessments. Inclusion criteria …
Engagement By Design: Belongingness, Cultural Value Orientations, And Pathways Into Emerging Technologies, Daisuke Akiba, Michael Perrone, Caterina Almendral, Rebecca Garte
Engagement By Design: Belongingness, Cultural Value Orientations, And Pathways Into Emerging Technologies, Daisuke Akiba, Michael Perrone, Caterina Almendral, Rebecca Garte
Publications and Research
This theoretical article examines how belongingness, defined as the sense that one’s participation is legitimate and valued, interacts with cultural value orientations to help explain persistent disparities in U.S. technology engagement, including emerging technologies, across racial and ethnic groups. While structural barriers (e.g., racism, poverty, linguistic bias, etc.) remain essential to understanding such inequity, we argue that engagement patterns in technology also reflect how different cultural communities may define and experience belongingness in relation to digital domains. Drawing on Triandis and Gelfand’s framework, and focusing specifically on educational contexts, we propose the Belongingness through Cultural Value Alignment (BCVA) model, whereby …

From Meditation To Magic: The Spectrum Of Buddhist Tourism In Thailand, Brooke Schedneck
From Meditation To Magic: The Spectrum Of Buddhist Tourism In Thailand, Brooke Schedneck
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Buddhism can conjure distinctive ideas and images for different groups of people, especially travelers to a Buddhist majority country like Thailand. Discussing three different modes of Buddhist tourism— meditation, magic, and mega statues— this article illuminates the varieties of Buddhist tourism in contemporary Thailand. While foreign visitors from Western countries are assumed by Thai Buddhist practitioners to favor engagement with Buddhism related to meditation, Chinese and Thai Buddhists are seen to appreciate Buddhism for its magical protective powers. Chinese tourists in particular are now being targeted to purchase products and experiences related to mutelu, which is a term for objects …

Analysis Of Pilgrimage To The Evangelical Lutheran Church In Zimbabwe (Elcz) Mission Centres, Rabson Hove
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
A pilgrimage is usually a sacred journey undertaken by religious adherents to holy places associated with their own traditions. As religions grow, religious pilgrimage also expands as the members of the religious traditions continue to influence each other. These holy religious centres influence religious enrichment, enhancement, strength and growth. Members get in touch with their origins and the history of the expansion of their religion as they encounter their holy sites or centres. In the case of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe (ELCZ), their important holy sites are missionary centres which are commonly located in rural Zimbabwe. The majority …

Exploring How Religious Tourism Influences The Motivation Of Young Thai Tourists In Bangkok., Arisara Seyanont
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Religious tourism in Thailand encompasses a wide range of tourism related to religion, including traditional festivals and various religious activities. Today, temples or religious places in Thailand have become tourist attractions that people pay attention to, including groups of teenagers. Young Thai tourists show interest and travel to temples to ask for blessings, seek more amulets, and participate in Dharma practices. Within this context, this study aims to explore the components of religious tourism that influence the motivation of young Thai tourists in Bangkok. The components of religious tourism consist of 5 dimensions: 1) architectural design, painting, and sculpture; 2) …
