Moral Is Political; Notions Of Ideal Citizenship In Lie Kim Hok's "Hikajat Khonghoetjoe", Evi Sutrisno Apr 2017

Moral Is Political; Notions Of Ideal Citizenship In Lie Kim Hok's "Hikajat Khonghoetjoe", Evi Sutrisno

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper argues that the Hikajat Khonghoetjoe (The life story of Confucius), written by Lie Kim Hok in 1897, is a medium to propose modern ideas of flexible subjectivity, cosmopolitanism, active citizenship and the concepts of good governance to the Chinese Peranakans who experienced political and racial discrimination under Dutch colonization. Using the figure of Confucius, Lie aimed to cultivate virtuous subjects who apply their faith and morality in political sphere. He intended to raise political awareness and rights among the Chinese as colonial subjects and to valorize their bargaining power with the Dutch colonial government. By introducing Confucianism, Lie …

Neues Testament Und Märchen: Tolkien, Fairy Stories, And The Gospel, John Wm. Houghton Apr 2017

Neues Testament Und Märchen: Tolkien, Fairy Stories, And The Gospel, John Wm. Houghton

Journal of Tolkien Research

J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1943 claim in “On Fairy-stories” that the Christian Gospel is a fairy story which “has entered History and the primary world” stands over against significant (and widely publicized) elements of Liberal Protestant biblical interpretation of the 19th and 20th centuries, exemplified in Rudolph Bultmann’s 1941 essay, “New Testament and Mythology.” Tolkien’s position, which seems to have influenced C. S. Lewis and Austin Farrer, owes something to G. K. Chesterton but has yet more direct parallels in Thomas Aquinas and Gregory the Great.

A Clino-Cladistic Look At Pull & Push Tabs Ca. 1950-1980, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa Apr 2017

A Clino-Cladistic Look At Pull & Push Tabs Ca. 1950-1980, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Pull tabs revolutionized the way beverage cans and food containers were opened and their contents removed. Ermal Fraze is credited with this, yet he was not alone in the invention nor was he technically the first. Until recently, pull tabs were not considered diagnostic in Historical Archaeology because they had not yet met the 50-year-old threshold. As of 2015, ring pull tabs entered the historic era, yet relatively little is known about these artifacts. In order to place these artifacts in terminus ante and post quem timeframes for historical archaeologists who have located and will more frequently encounter these items …

Finding Identity In A Skeletal Cold Case, Katherine S. Jackson

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

This poster will explore a skeletal cold case presented to University of Montana Forensic Anthropology Laboratory (UMFAL). Forensic anthropology consists of the study and analysis of skeletal remains in a legal context in an attempt to aid in the identification of human remains. This poster will explain the circumstances of the cold case, the analysis and methods conducted, as well as non-identifying results. On the 10th of February, 2017, the UMFAL received the remains of a cold case that had been stored in the Montana Forensic State Crime Lab. Our goal was to conduct a re-analysis of a previously …

Korean-Ness: Creating And Embracing New Identities Through Language And Culture, Damon Dohe, Daniel Shin Apr 2017

Korean-Ness: Creating And Embracing New Identities Through Language And Culture, Damon Dohe, Daniel Shin

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Technological advances in communications and transportation have unlocked new pathways for mobilizing transnational flows of people, information, and culture. The cyber-networked landscape in which we now live has enabled a pluralistic existence, no longer restricted to singular definitions of citizenship, identity, and cultural membership. In the era of the internet and globalization, the world is often said to be “shrinking.” However, instead of a smaller or simpler world, our project illustrates far more layered and complex relationships and positionalities. This multi-sited research project focuses on the ways in which Korean immigrants and Korean Americans use language to establish cultural networks, …

Divine Embodiment And Women’S Resistance In Sri Lanka: Opposing The Ideologies Of Nation And Empire, Olivia Dure Apr 2017

Divine Embodiment And Women’S Resistance In Sri Lanka: Opposing The Ideologies Of Nation And Empire, Olivia Dure

2017 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

This thesis articulates how the divine possession of women in Sri Lanka enacts resistance against the imposition of colonial rule and nationalist politics. Women’s lives are implicated in active histories of violence, spanning from the brutality of colonial rule to the continued forms of violent regulation inherent to Sri Lanka’s multi-decade conflict. My work aims to show how divine possession, through a subversion of ritual hierarchies both within the space of ritual and outside of it, counters the hegemony of empire. To do this, I look to how divine possession inhabits bodies previously consumed by colonial rule and nationalist ideology, …

A Longitudinal Cline Characterizes The Genetic Structure Of Human Populations In The Tibetan Plateau, Choongwon Jeong, Benjamin M. Peter, Buddha Basnyat, Maniraj Neupane, Geoff Childs, Sienna Craig, John Novembre, Anna Di Rienzo Apr 2017

A Longitudinal Cline Characterizes The Genetic Structure Of Human Populations In The Tibetan Plateau, Choongwon Jeong, Benjamin M. Peter, Buddha Basnyat, Maniraj Neupane, Geoff Childs, Sienna Craig, John Novembre, Anna Di Rienzo

Dartmouth Scholarship

Indigenous populations of the Tibetan plateau have attracted much attention for their good performance at extreme high altitude. Most genetic studies of Tibetan adaptations have used genetic variation data at the genome scale, while genetic inferences about their de- mography and population structure are largely based on uniparental markers. To provide genome-wide information on population structure, we analyzed new and published data of 338 individuals from indigenous populations across the plateau in conjunction with world- wide genetic variation data. We found a clear signal of genetic stratification across the east- west axis within Tibetan samples. Samples from more eastern locations …

People, Land And Poppy: The Political Ecology Of Opium And The Historical Impact Of Alternative Development In Northwest Thailand, Bobby Anderson Apr 2017

People, Land And Poppy: The Political Ecology Of Opium And The Historical Impact Of Alternative Development In Northwest Thailand, Bobby Anderson

Forest and Society

Thailand’s near-total elimination of opium poppy cultivation is attributed to “alternative development” programming, which replaces illicit crops with licit ones. However, opium poppy cultivation was not drastically reduced because substitute crops earned the same income as opium: nothing can equal the price of opium to smallholder farmers, especially those without land tenure. Thailand’s reduction in poppy cultivation was achieved by the increased presence and surveillance capability of state security actors, who, year by year, were able to locate and destroy fields, and arrest cultivators, with increasing accuracy. This coercion was also accompanied by benefits to cultivators, including the provision of …

Forest And Society: Initiating A Southeast Asia Journal For Theoretical, Empirical, And Regional Scholarship, Micah Fisher, Ahmad Maryudi, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide

Forest and Society

Welcome to our first edition. We are excited to provide a new, and what we believe, timely avenue for presenting research findings and publications in Southeast Asia, for scholars interested in Southeast Asia. Although Southeast Asia as a region of study has provided tremendous contributions to theory and practice regarding forests and society across the social and natural sciences, avenues for cultivating a scholarship of the region remain limited. We seek to engage on a broad set of themes through the application of targeted research related to timely issues affecting the human-environment interface in a diverse region that we have …

The Motionless Half-Sun Over The Postcolonial Horizon: Adichie, Bhabha, And Inaction, Themal I. Ellawala 2896594 Apr 2017

The Motionless Half-Sun Over The Postcolonial Horizon: Adichie, Bhabha, And Inaction, Themal I. Ellawala 2896594

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

Action is a metaphysical reality of our daily existence, one so commonplace and privileged that it has transcended its dialectical relationship with inaction to preeminence. The latter has failed to capture the imagination of philosophers and critical theorists, leaving the subversive potential of this negative space unexplored. This essay seeks to interrogate the space of inaction, and restore the unity between the action and inaction. This exploration is situated within a postcolonial context, as a conversation between Chimamanda Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun and Homi Bhabha, to examine how inaction offers a site to challenge the violence of action …

Understanding And Addressing Arab-American Mental Health Disparities, Sherief Y. Eldeeb Apr 2017

Understanding And Addressing Arab-American Mental Health Disparities, Sherief Y. Eldeeb

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

The landscape of mental healthcare and focus on disparities research in the United States has vastly improved in recent years. However, Arab-Americans continue to be a commonly overlooked group within the scope of the research. This trend is especially worrisome given detrimental factors for Arab-Americans that have arisen as a factor of 9/11 and in the scope of the 2016 United States Presidential Election. This work explores barriers to accessing formal mental health care and offers recommendations to reconcile them for Arab-Americans. The present study completes this through a review of the literature and an interview conducted by the author …

An Impossible Standard: The Virgin Mary And The Construction Of Southern Womanhood, Dean Symmonds Apr 2017

An Impossible Standard: The Virgin Mary And The Construction Of Southern Womanhood, Dean Symmonds

Undergraduate Research Awards

This paper examines Southern literature about white women in its religious and cultural contexts to illuminate the deeply embedded connections between the figure of the Virgin Mary and the archetypes of the white Southern Belle and Dixie Madonna, and reveal both a complex web of cultural constructions designed to control, critique, and constrain Southern women, and how women use those constructions to free themselves.
