Public Opinion On Renewable Energy: The Nexus Of Climate, Politics, And Economy, Shawn K. Olson-Hazboun May 2017

Public Opinion On Renewable Energy: The Nexus Of Climate, Politics, And Economy, Shawn K. Olson-Hazboun

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation research examines the factors underlying public opinion toward renewable energy in the United States. U.S. citizens in general support the continued development of renewable energy, yet opposition has been widely observed toward a variety of renewable energy facilities at the local level. Previous research on public responses to renewable energy has focused on one or a small number of communities experiencing renewable energy development. In this research I examine public views more broadly, in communities with and without renewable energy development, and also using nationally representative opinion data. I ask the following questions:

What local experiences influence how …

Do Data Structures Matter? A Simulation Study For Testing The Validity Of Age-Period-Cohort Models, Sun Young Jeon May 2017

Do Data Structures Matter? A Simulation Study For Testing The Validity Of Age-Period-Cohort Models, Sun Young Jeon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Age, period, and cohort are three temporal dimensions that can make unique contributions to social and epidemiological changes that occur in populations over time. However, while the theoretical underpinnings for each temporal dimension are well established, the statistical techniques to assess the distinctive contributions of age, period and cohort are controversial. Unless questionable assumptions are imposed on the data, traditional linear regression models are incapable of estimating the independent contribution of each temporal dimension due to the linear dependence between age, period and cohort (A=P-C). Two recently developed methods, Hierarchical Age-Period-Cohort (HAPC) and Intrinsic Estimator (IE) models, enable researchers to …

Activity Patterns And Division Of Labor At A Southeastern Tennessee Late Mississippian Site: Toqua, Dustin Lloyd May 2017

Activity Patterns And Division Of Labor At A Southeastern Tennessee Late Mississippian Site: Toqua, Dustin Lloyd

Theses and Dissertations

Entheseal changes (EC), formally musculoskeletal stress markers, are the recordation of osteophytic change at an enthesis (any muscular origin or insertion). Study of EC is valuable in decoding past life activities, social dynamics, and health through the quantification of reactive osseous changes at entheses. The current study assesses EC to ascertain activity patterns at the Late Mississippian Dallas Phase (~1300-1550 AD) site of Toqua, aboriginally located in the lower Little Tennessee River Valley of East Tennessee. Toqua was a multiple mound, palisaded settlement of maize-intensive agriculturalists. The subsistence strategy may have required intense and possibly specialized labor of the upper …

Background—Conventional coronary artery disease risk factors might potentially explain at least 90% of the attributable risk of coronary artery disease. To better understand the association between the pre-industrial lifestyle and low prevalence of coronary artery disease risk factors, we examined the Tsimane, a Bolivian population living a subsistence lifestyle of hunting, gathering, fishing, and farming with few cardiovascular risk factors, but high infectious inflammatory burden.

Methods—We did a cross-sectional cohort study including all individuals who self-identified as Tsimane and who were aged 40 years or older. Coronary atherosclerosis was assessed by coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring done with …

The Importance Of Inter-Agency Collaboration In Historical Site Management In Urban Areas., Angela C. Reichert Apr 2017

The Importance Of Inter-Agency Collaboration In Historical Site Management In Urban Areas., Angela C. Reichert

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The Western United States is rich in archaeological history. In urban areas there is less development over historical sites due to the increased availability of land. During the Western Expansion of the 19th century there was rapid growth in the West, including the eventual development of residential neighborhoods in larger cities. Western expansion led to construction over preexisting historical sites deemed expendable during the time period. Preplanning and coordination with educational institutions can help prevent damage of historical remains when known human burials are disturbed. Simultaneously, coordinated efforts can assist with the management of public relations during such disturbances. Missoula …

Analysis Of The Activity Areas And Cleaned Zones Of Floor Iib Of Housepit 54 At The Bridge River Site (Eerl4), Nicole Musci

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The Bridge River Archaeological Project has been active since 2003 and consists of a collaborative partnership between The Department of Anthropology at The University of Montana, and Xwisten, the Bridge River Indian Band. Since the beginning of the project numerous studies and excavations have been conducted in the Bridge River area to develop an understanding of the ancient history of the area focusing on the ancient peoples who lived there during the past 2000 years. This project involves utilizing “heavy fractions,” which are rock and bone materials left over from a process that separates “light fraction” materials (such as botanicals), …

Iggy Azalea's Dialectal Disguise: A Pursuit Of Power Through Speech And Privilege, Caroline Jh Allen Apr 2017

Iggy Azalea's Dialectal Disguise: A Pursuit Of Power Through Speech And Privilege, Caroline Jh Allen

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

White Australian hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea has been the subject of recent criticism forher use of African American English (AAE). Eberhardt and Freeman (2015) demonstratethat Iggy, a native speaker of Australian English who uses Australian English in all of herpublic speech, makes consistent and context-sensitive use of AAE throughout her entirediscography. In order to account for this unique behavior, Eberhardt and Freeman use thetheoretical notion of linguistic appropriation (Hill 2008) which describes the powerimbalance evident when outgroup members (e.g. Iggy) benefit from the use of certainvarieties of speech that ingroup members (e.g. speakers of AAE) are stigmatized forusing. Drawing on …

The Zika Awareness Program At The University Of Montana - Zap Um, Caleb Chestnut, Kierney Ross, Janette Chacon, Madison Quammen

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Massive technological advances have made it easier than ever to connect with opportunities abroad and study in countries outside of the United States. An increase in students studying abroad has obliged institutions to provide increasing preparation and protection for those leaving the country. In several regions, vector-borne diseases are of chief concern. The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne disease that had a particularly devastating impact during the summer of 2016. Implications of a Zika infection can include: flu-like symptoms, joint and muscle aches, rashes, and, more seriously, a birth defect called microcephaly and an autoimmune disorder known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome. …

Women’S Work: Labor Market Outcomes And Female Entrepreneurship In Ghana, Loretta Agyemang Apr 2017

Women’S Work: Labor Market Outcomes And Female Entrepreneurship In Ghana, Loretta Agyemang

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper is an investigation of female entrepreneurship in Ghana. It seeks to answer the following question: Why are Ghanaian women so heavily concentrated in microenterprise in the informal economy? The literature review explores labor market trends for women on three different scales including an overview of developing countries, Sub-Saharan Africa regional, and Ghana-specific analysis. After exploring issues women face in formal employment, the study delves into business operations of informal, urban-based market participants by analyzing data pertaining to Ghanaian microenterprise. Additionally, the paper details the experiences and views of female entrepreneurs through in-depth interviews and participant observations with thirty …

The Female Percussionist: Social And Cultural Perspectives, Ksenija Komljenović Apr 2017

The Female Percussionist: Social And Cultural Perspectives, Ksenija Komljenović

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the presence of and perceptions about professional female percussionists. The history of female participation in music in Western society reveals patterns of bias and segregation, in addition to progress made by those who fought for equality. Although a significant body of research has focused on gender instrument bias, the topic of female percussionists has been largely untended. Previous literature reveals several themes underlying this topic, including sex stereotyping of roles in music, instrument choice, childhood gender roles and their social context, role modeling in higher educational institutions, work-life balance, and reported issues …

Swaying The Jury: The Effect Of Expert Witness Testimony On Jury Verdicts In Rape Trials, Christina E. Ball Apr 2017

Swaying The Jury: The Effect Of Expert Witness Testimony On Jury Verdicts In Rape Trials, Christina E. Ball

Senior Capstone Theses

With the reliance on rape myths to form opinions towards rape victims, the use of expert witnesses is of increased importance. Rape myths may give jurors misinformed notions about why, how, or to whom rape happens. This indicates a need for educational expert testimony in rape jury trials. It is proposed the use of this testimony will help dispel these myths and social biases towards victims of rape. This paper explores the need for expert witness testimony and the relationship between expert witness and jury. It discusses what type of testimony may be presented and who qualifies as an expert. …

Exploring The Relationship Amongst Sex, Personality Traits, And Cognitive Task Performance, Heather A. Kissel Apr 2017

Exploring The Relationship Amongst Sex, Personality Traits, And Cognitive Task Performance, Heather A. Kissel

Undergraduate Theses

The results of many research studies support the hypothesis that men possess better spatial abilities than women, particularly on versions of the mental rotation task (MRT). However, while this sex difference may hold true for any given sample of men and women from the general population, people within each of these sex categorizations differ on such characteristics as personality traits. These differences in personality can be seen on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Bem Sex Role Inventory, and the Big Five Aspect Scales (BFAS). The current study explored whether these personality traits, as returned by the aforementioned inventories, were …

Between Citizens And Strangers: On Laïcité And Group Rights Among Hmong In France, Austin Gillett Apr 2017

Between Citizens And Strangers: On Laïcité And Group Rights Among Hmong In France, Austin Gillett

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

As the school year began in 1989, three Muslim girls, Samira S. and Fatima and Leïla A., started the ninth and tenth grades, insistent upon wearing their Islamic veils (Cardoso 2000). Problems arose when the girls refused to attend class at the beginning of the school year and on Saturdays, citing religious reasons. The girls were suspended from school, and eventually appealed the decision, prompting major upsets across schools in France. Schools began to act independently, issuing bans on the veils. In 1990, Jean-Juarés High School specified that “the wearing of all distinctive symbols, clothing or otherwise, religious, political, or …

The Diet And Subsistence Methods Of The Maya: Their Health And Cultural Consequences From The Pre-Classic Era To Today, Rachel E. Watson Apr 2017

The Diet And Subsistence Methods Of The Maya: Their Health And Cultural Consequences From The Pre-Classic Era To Today, Rachel E. Watson

Honors Undergraduate

The Maya, a once great civilization, seemingly vanished without an obvious reason, before the Spanish landed in the region. Some say that their downfall was a result of famine and inadequate nutrition. Surprisingly, most of the archaeological evidence surrounding the Classic Maya diet and subsistence methods indicates that they both adequately sustained the population to the point where there has been practically no change over hundreds of years. Change did not occur to the Maya diet or the classic subsistence methods until the late twentieth century when the tourism industry exploded in the area of the former Maya empire. The …
