An Examination Of Medicinal Ethnobotany And Biomedicine Use In Two Villages On The Phnom Kulen Plateau, Taylor Walker
An Examination Of Medicinal Ethnobotany And Biomedicine Use In Two Villages On The Phnom Kulen Plateau, Taylor Walker
Undergraduate Research Awards
Cambodians address symptomatic illness in two ways: they use traditional medicine, including medicinal plants, and biomedicine. Despite various attempts to quantify medicinal ethnobotany in Cambodia, no national ethnopharmacopoeia exists, and there is a gap in the literature regarding the mechanisms through which traditional medicines are prepared and used. This report presents an examination of the ethnopharmacopoeia of two villages within Phnom Kulen National Park, a study site chosen for its unique ecology and status as one of Cambodia’s last remaining regions with lowland evergreen and semi-evergreen forest. The report also investigates the mechanisms through which villagers make decisions regarding illness …

Community Archaeology At Tall Hisban, Øystein Sakala Labianca
Community Archaeology At Tall Hisban, Øystein Sakala Labianca
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
This article introduces community archaeology as an emerging perspective on the role and responsibility of archaeologists in relation to the communities where they do their fieldwork. It then offers examples of specific ways in which the leaders of the original Heshbon Expedition (1968–1996) paved the way for the pioneering work in community archaeology of the Tall Hisban Cultural Heritage Project (1996–present). It also includes highlights of community archaeology related activities during recent field seasons and concludes by describing current efforts to provide for ongoing maintenance and protection of the archaeological site in perpetuity.

Contextualizing Palestinian Hybridity: How Pragmatic Citizenship Influences Diasporic Identities, Nicholas E. Bascuñan-Wiley
Contextualizing Palestinian Hybridity: How Pragmatic Citizenship Influences Diasporic Identities, Nicholas E. Bascuñan-Wiley
Sociology Honors Projects
Palestinians are one of the largest diaspora populations in the world, with members in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. How are the individual diasporic experiences of nationalism similar and different to one another? This research examines the creation and maintenance of Palestinian identity in diasporic contexts through ethnographic analysis and a series of interviews conducted in Chile, Jordan, and The United States. The results show that despite Palestinians maintaining Palestinianness as a dominant characteristic of identity in all three settings, there are contextual influences on how people integrate that identity into their lives. Within Jordan, Palestinians experience …

I Presume You Have Heard Of Dr. Livingstone, Mary Eakins
Honors Projects
David Livingstone is perhaps one of the most famous missionaries of the nineteenth century. During the mid-1800’s he captivated the imaginations of the western world with his achievements and explorations in Africa- his walk across the continent, the infamous meeting with Mr. Stanley, and his grand funeral leading to his burial in Westminster Abbey. During his lifetime he was an explorer, an anthropologist, a botanist, a geographer, a cartographer, a doctor, and most importantly in his eyes, a missionary to the unreached people of Africa.

The Applicability Of Short-Wave Infrared (Swir) Imagery For Archaeological Landscape Classification On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile, Dylan S. Davis
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
High-resolution multispectral imagery provides an effective means for measuring the archaeological record of Rapa Nui. Previous work has suggested that the island’s prehistoric cultivation features known as “lithic mulch gardens” can be identified using near infrared imagery (NIR). Lithic mulching was a laborious but critical strategy for prehistoric populations who relied on cultivating sweet potato and taro in nutrient poor soils for their subsistence. The new WorldView-3 satellite offers researchers access to short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands, imagery that provides additional information about moisture content and mineral composition. While these bands should provide a better means for identifying lithic mulch gardens, …

Living Together With Ancestors: Cultural Heritage And Sacred Places On West Java, Jörgen Hellman
Living Together With Ancestors: Cultural Heritage And Sacred Places On West Java, Jörgen Hellman
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
On Java (Indonesia), sacred places (tempat keramat) are powerful and contested sites. Historically they have served as important pilgrimage sites and more recently have also become major tourist attractions. In this paper, I will explore three ways of ‘past presencing’ - the nationalist, the Islamic and the traditional - and how groups representing each of these challenge one another at different sites. Today, sacred places in Indonesia are caught between the political ambitions of some who wish to create national cultural heritage, the aspirations of religious revivalists who want to cleanse the sites of what they consider superstition, and the …

Pilgrimage Tourism, one of the oldest forms of travelling, is the largest tourism sector in India; annually more than 70% of domestic tourist movement is for religious purposes which comes to 250 million pilgrims (Jachowski, 2000, Singh, 2016) and accounts for 20% of the revenue generated in the tourism industry (Dewan et al., 2008), hence, making it significant religiously, economically, politically, as well as sociologically. The present study was based on a survey conducted among the visitors who came for the 17th Exposition of St Francis Xavier’s holy relics, a Christian religious event, from 22nd November 2014 to 4th January …

Living Like A Monk: Motivations And Experiences Of International Participants In Templestay, Byunggil Chun, Eugene Y. Roh, Samuel Arvin Spralls
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Templestay has transformed the perception and traditional role of Buddhist monasteries into a hybrid form of leisure and recreational dwelling that transcends religious boundaries. We identify four domains of motivational variables including learning, self-growth, being with nature, and relaxation. Based on data from 299 international participants in Templestay, empirical tests of the hypotheses revealed that motivational domains such as self-growth, nature, and learning exhibited significant differences based on the various socio-demographic backgrounds of international participants. Strategies are suggested for crafting Templestay as a cultural and monastic experience as well as segmenting and targeting international participants based on their needs.

Specifically, the study compares the costs of Islamic religious tourism to Mecca among three groups: 1) Indonesia and India, 2) Lebanon and Tunisia, 3) Dubai and Qatar. The selection of the three groups was based on the following principle: Group 1: Represents the most populated and less affluent Islamic countries. Group 2: Represents the less affluent Arab States with moderate income Group 3: Represents the richest Arab Islamic countries in the world. Results indicate that countries with wealthy economies charge much higher prices for Hajj packages than those with …
