Synthesis Of A Bifunctional Macrocycle, Hasina Noory
Synthesis Of A Bifunctional Macrocycle, Hasina Noory
Anthropology
Macrocycles are important organic ligands for encapsulating metal ions. This work describes the first step of a synthesis to create a bifunctional macrocyclic ligand suitable for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) studies. Cyclen is an organic macrocycle that contains twelve atoms total, with four nitrogen atoms incorporated into the cyclic backbone. Cyclen can be modified to coordinate a variety of metal ions by adding additional chelating arms. This synthesis is focused on functionalizing three of the donor nitrogens with carboxylate arms, while strategically leaving the fourth nitrogen available for further modification.
Can Simple Postural Instructions Modify Running Forms In Recreational Runners, Casey Gray, Matthew Poggemiller, Ian Tracy
Can Simple Postural Instructions Modify Running Forms In Recreational Runners, Casey Gray, Matthew Poggemiller, Ian Tracy
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Purpose/Hypothesis: Recent research suggests that alteration of trunk angle and foot strike pattern during running may result in beneficial changes that prevent running related injuries due to reduction in vertical ground reaction forces (vGRF). For example, running form emphasizing a forward trunk lean and a midfoot or forefoot strike pattern has been shown to be effective in reducing knee stress and the risks of other impact-related running injuries. In clinical practice however, it is currently unknown if simple postural cues given to runners can elicit motor learning that leads to modification of running form. The purpose of this study was …
The Bioarchaeology Of Inequality During The Middle Bronze Age In Central Anatolia, Cheryl Anderson
The Bioarchaeology Of Inequality During The Middle Bronze Age In Central Anatolia, Cheryl Anderson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation research study focused on the bioarchaeology of Kaman-Kalehöyük and the goal was to provide baseline data for investigating the effects of social inequalities on rural communities during the Middle Bronze Age (MBA) (ca. 2000-1750 years Before Current Era) in central Anatolia (present-day Turkey). In particular, this project addresses the impact of the political landscape during the MBA on population health at the village site Kaman-Kalehöyük using multiple lines of evidence. This is accomplished through the thorough documentation and analysis of human skeletal remains at Kaman-Kalehöyük. More specifically, all MBA skeletal remains from this site were examined for health …
Reality And Nature In Robinson Jeffers, Joshua D. Bartee
Reality And Nature In Robinson Jeffers, Joshua D. Bartee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Synonyms are the key to understanding Robinson Jeffers’s poetry and his philosophy of inhumanism. Reality, nature, and God are words Jeffers uses to communicate monistic feelings. These words are difficult to define on their own. When used interchangeably by the poet, a sense of oneness with the universe is generated in the reader. This is how Jeffers gives value to the natural world, and his environmental ethic is inextricably tangled up with the numinous as much as the real. A belief in immanence, or that God is present in the material world, guides Jeffers’s philosophy of inhumanism. Reality becomes the …
Aging And Fermentation As Adaptive Food Management Strategies In The Arctic, Celeste Giordano
Aging And Fermentation As Adaptive Food Management Strategies In The Arctic, Celeste Giordano
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation is composed of three papers: one published article, one article under review for publication, and one published commentary. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the dissertation as a whole – a work that investigates food aging and fermentation techniques in an indigenous Yup’ik Alaskan community, proposes an adaptive explanation for these strategies in the circumpolar north, and explores the potential importance of them cross-culturally and evolutionarily. Chapter 2 is a paper that describes the seal poke storage system – an indigenous food preservation and storage technique that Yup’ik Alaskans used to manage food security up until approximately one …
Distracted Driving In Clark County, Nevada: Analysis Of An Intervention On College Students, Heidi Ann Manlove
Distracted Driving In Clark County, Nevada: Analysis Of An Intervention On College Students, Heidi Ann Manlove
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Distracted driving is a growing public health concern. Highlighted in the media, local and government agencies and in peer-review literature are increased associations of motor vehicle crash related injuries and fatalities with distracted driving, especially involving youth drivers. The goal of this thesis was to analyze the effects of a distracted driving intervention on college students at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Quantitative statistical analysis was performed to compare self-reported pre and post-intervention questionnaire responses of the experimental and control groups. Between-group analysis was performed using independent t-tests and ANOVA. Within-group differences were analyzed with Repeated Measures ANOVA (RM-ANOVA) and …
The Culture Of Conspiracy: Evolving Media Technology And Its Relationship To Conspiracy Theories, Jennifer Carol Gagliardi
The Culture Of Conspiracy: Evolving Media Technology And Its Relationship To Conspiracy Theories, Jennifer Carol Gagliardi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Conspiracy theorists often use media technology to create and distribute their ideas to a wider audience. In doing so, these theorists also use the same technology to manipulate the images they are using, thus changing the way the photographs or film stills were meant to be received originally. In changing these aspects of the object, the conspiracy theorist is creating an entirely new narrative based on their personal values. Throughout this paper I will refer to this idea as the “culture of conspiracy†and use it to discuss how technologies such as photoshop, DVD players, and manipulative rhetoric are used …
An Archaeological Examination Of Economic Inequality As Seen In Domestic Early Islamic Housing In Rural Southern Iraq, Abdul-Hameed Salman Al-Nassar
An Archaeological Examination Of Economic Inequality As Seen In Domestic Early Islamic Housing In Rural Southern Iraq, Abdul-Hameed Salman Al-Nassar
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The goal of this study is to assess economic inequality levels in rural southern Iraq after the Arab Islamic conquest. This assessment stems from an examination of variability in domestic rooms and courtyards between the pre-conquest Sasanian (224 – 636 CE) and post-conquest Early Islamic (636 – 836 CE) periods. To achieve this goal, ethnoarchaeological and excavation data from the region are utilized to search for parallels between room and courtyard sizes. The ethnoarchaeological data are vital to establishing the correlation between courtyard and house sizes that are needed to effectively analyze the satellite-derived settlement data from the area's Sasanian …
Extra Nos But Not Extraneous: Augustine’S De Natura Et Gratia And Contemporary Receptions Of Augustine, Thomas Pietsch
Extra Nos But Not Extraneous: Augustine’S De Natura Et Gratia And Contemporary Receptions Of Augustine, Thomas Pietsch
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Pietsch, Thomas, D. “Extra Nos but not Extraneous: Augustine’s De Natura et Gratia and Contemporary Receptions of Augustine.” STM thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2017. 116 pp.
The relationship of nature to grace has become one of significant importance for contemporary theology. Following the turbulent debates surrounding Henri de Lubac in the twentieth century, theologians associated with Radical Orthodoxy have revived the importance of the relationship in more recent years. Whether acknowledged or not, all discussions of nature and grace owe much to Augustine, who was the first person to present a systematic discussion of the matter in his 415 anti-Pelagian treatise, …
Going With The Flow: Using Menstrual Education As A Tool For Empowering Post Pubescent Nepali Girls, Graceann L. Cadiz
Going With The Flow: Using Menstrual Education As A Tool For Empowering Post Pubescent Nepali Girls, Graceann L. Cadiz
Master's Theses
Global discourse and research evidence on the benefits of girl’s education show that prioritizing girl’s education is the most successful strategy of breaking the cycle of poverty, gender inequality, and overpopulation. Moreover, there is a growing interest in closing the gender gap in education, but there has been insufficient attention to the specific needs of girls experiencing menses or menarche within schooling environments. The beginning of menstruation represents a pivotal event in development of the adolescent girl but is under-recognized and deemed insignificant with a culture of silence present throughout the rest of their lives. While providing access to education …
Creating A Multiracial Lesson Plan, Clayton Davis
Creating A Multiracial Lesson Plan, Clayton Davis
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The purpose of this project is to teach students about multiracial identity issues. Multiracial populations in the U.S. continue to grow and it’s important for educators to address the needs of these students. A 5-E multiracial literature lesson plan was created for second grade that incorporates KWL and Text-to-World teaching strategies. A second grade class were read two children’s picture books, each featuring a biracial protagonist, and were asked to discuss and evaluate the content and commonalities of these stories. Students recorded what they learned in this lesson in their KWL’s. The results reveal that some students understood the problems …
English Only? Enrichment Of English Language Learner Education, Laura R. Hinton
English Only? Enrichment Of English Language Learner Education, Laura R. Hinton
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Due to pressures to acquire the English language, English Language Learners (ELL) have school schedules inundated with English Development and other English acquisition classes. This means most ELL students have few opportunities to take elective courses. Furthermore, ELL students at the basic proficiency level have Science and Social Studies excluded from their schedules. Additional challenges for ELL students include being segregated from their English only (EO) peers and inadequate development and training of teachers serving ELL students. Interviews were conducted with Administration, the English Language (EL) Specialist, and ELL Students at Wakefield Middle School, to better understand ELL students’ educational …
For What It's Worth: The Role Of Race- And Gender-Based Data In Civil Damages Awards, Loren D. Goodman
For What It's Worth: The Role Of Race- And Gender-Based Data In Civil Damages Awards, Loren D. Goodman
Vanderbilt Law Review
Following months of behavioral problems, hyperactivity, and intermittent complaints of headache and nausea, five-year-old Kelsey Craig's mother finally takes her to the pediatrician to determine the root of the problem. After multiple consultations, a blood test shows a surprising culprit: there is a dangerously high amount of lead present in Kelsey's blood, suggesting prolonged exposure to the irreversibly toxic substance. Upon returning to their older, prewar apartment building, Kelsey's mother passes a neighboring family in the hallway and woefully relays the tale of her diagnosis. The neighbors' eyes grow wide as they realize their own five-year-old son has been experiencing …
Are Universities Providing Non-Stem Students The Mathematics Preparation Required By Their Programs?: A Case Study Of A Quantitative Literacy Pathway And Vertical Alignment From Remediation To Degree Completion, Charles Merritt Allen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Informed by Gagne's belief in the necessity of prerequisite knowledge for new learning, and Bruner's Spiral Curriculum Theory, the objective of this case study was to explore the postsecondary pathway from remedial mathematics, through one gateway mathematics course, and into the quantitative literacy requirements of various non-STEM programs of study. Particular attention was directed towards analyses of the vertical alignment of course content between: (1) the two consecutive remedial mathematics courses (Beginning Algebra and Intermediate Algebra), (2) the two remedial courses and the gateway course (Fundamentals of College Mathematics), and (3) the gateway course and the quantitative literacy needs of …
Is There A Link Between Fantasy Sports Players And Sports Bettors?, Wayman Wittman
Is There A Link Between Fantasy Sports Players And Sports Bettors?, Wayman Wittman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This paper will explore the consumer base playing fantasy sports and comparing it with the consumer base that is currently betting on sports. According to the Fantasy Sport Trade Association, (FSTA), there are an estimated 41 million people that actively participate in fantasy sports in the United States of America and Canada (Dwyer, Achen & Lupninek, 2016). The FSTA also estimated that $1 billion was spend directly on fantasy products with an additional $4 billion spent on related services such as media (Dwyer, et al., 2016). If there is a link between playing fantasy sports and sports betting, then being …
Evaluating The Impact Of Statewide Policy Implementation On Interorganizational Collaboration At The Regional Level : An Application Of Network Analysis., Nida Moez Ali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One challenge to improving population health in the United States is that the systems tasked with the responsibility of providing services across the continuum of care often operate in silos, missing opportunities to provide quality, coordinated care. In 2011, Texas received approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for a five-year 1115(a) Medicaid Waiver Demonstration Project. This dissertation focuses on one element of the Waiver, the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) Program, which was designed to incentivize activities that support organizations’ collaborative efforts with other organizations in addressing the Triple Aim strategies. DSRIP was implemented through …
Unthink Pink : Master Narratives And Counterstories Of Breast Cancer., Jessica C. Hume
Unthink Pink : Master Narratives And Counterstories Of Breast Cancer., Jessica C. Hume
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work examines the construction and impact of the master narrative breast cancer which is supported and reified by the contemporary breast cancer awareness movement. I contend that historical problematic constructions of the female body were interwoven with the beginning of the movement around the turn of the twentieth century. As a partial result, the female body with breast cancer is abject, and therefore subject to policing and discipline. The master narrative of breast cancer, through pinkwashing, enacts this policing and discipline. The master narrative expresses several distinct messages which may be exclusive of the experiences of many people, causing …
A Comparison Of Ancient Roman And Greek Norms Regarding Sexuality And Gender, Cody Goetting
A Comparison Of Ancient Roman And Greek Norms Regarding Sexuality And Gender, Cody Goetting
Honors Projects
Sex, sexuality, and gender norms continue to be a pressing matter in the modern political and social scene, with debates revolving around several important topics such as means of expression, comfort, biology, culture, among many others, too numerous to list entirely. The existence of these issues is not new, however, as every civilization must establish its own norms and mores in regards to these issues. Among the most significant cultures to influence the development of modern western civilizations, the classical Greco-Roman culture which developed throughout the western Mediterranean must be considered amongst the foremost; and their viewpoints of these issues …

The Black Maternal And Cultural Healing In Twentieth Century Black Women's Fiction, Paula Wingard White
The Black Maternal And Cultural Healing In Twentieth Century Black Women's Fiction, Paula Wingard White
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work examines representations of maternal relationships between black women in five contemporary novels: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Sula by Toni Morrison, The Salt Eaters by Toni Cade Bambara, The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Louisiana by Erna Brodber. Rather than situating the origins of black feminist literary studies during the Black Women’s Literary Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s, I argue that Hurston’s work shapes contemporary black feminist literary studies. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Nanny provides a mothering archetype that inspires a dominant theme and practice—the black maternal, within contemporary black …
"The Caribbean Imaginary In Southern Women's Literature", Christy Delaine Davis
"The Caribbean Imaginary In Southern Women's Literature", Christy Delaine Davis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
“The Caribbean Imaginary in Southern Women’s Literature” examines the U.S. South’s often contradictory approaches to viewing the Caribbean. While the image of the U.S. South has long been constructed by imagined fantasies, the southern authors in this project often thrust their own images onto the Caribbean imaginary. Throughout this project, I argue that over the past seventy years, the imperialist bent towards the Caribbean manifests in a variety of forms: media manipulation, patronage, fantasies, and nostalgia. At times, the Caribbean is seen as an imagined utopia full of potential, however this construction often erases the historical renderings of economic and …
Where In The World Are Pallas's Fish Eagles? Migration And Ecology Of Haliaeetus Leucoryphus In Asia, Marla Lynn Steele
Where In The World Are Pallas's Fish Eagles? Migration And Ecology Of Haliaeetus Leucoryphus In Asia, Marla Lynn Steele
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pallas’s Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) is the Northern Hemisphere’s least understood eagle species. Virtually nothing is known concerning the species’ ecology. Historically, Pallas’s Fish Eagles were expected to breed in three separate populations in Mongolia, China, and India and was considered one of the most common raptors in Asia prior to the 1900’s. However, by 1960’s major declines were observed. The species is currently listed as “globally vulnerable” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The current study examined over a century of Pallas’s Fish Eagle observation data to determine occupancy and detection rates throughout …
Women In Ambiguity: Fictitious Monogamy In Genji Monogatari, Anita Fike
Women In Ambiguity: Fictitious Monogamy In Genji Monogatari, Anita Fike
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The Heian classic tale Genji monogatari (c. early eleventh century) follows the amorous adventures of the Shining Prince Genji. After his death, the text continues to depict the romantic affairs of the next generation. Over the course of fifty-four chapters, an image of Heian-era romance comes to life, fraught with ambiguities surrounding romantic entanglements. The term “marriage” itself is contentious, as it is difficult to determine how the text interprets the marriage system and relationship practices at the time. The unclear stratification of women leaves many of the monogatari’s main female figures living in insecurity, where informal marriage seems …

Exploring Effects Of Organizational Culture Upon Implementation Of Information Security Awareness And Training Programs Within The Defense Industry Located In The Tennessee Valley Region, Robert Luther Grant
Theses and Dissertations
Data breaches due to social engineering attacks and employee negligence are on the rise. The only known defense against social engineering attacks and employee negligence is information security awareness and training. However, implementation of awareness and training programs within organizations are lagging in priority. This research used the constructivist grounded theory methodology to explore the effects organizational culture had upon the implementation of information security awareness and training programs and to discover why those programs were lagging in priority within the defense industry located in the Tennessee valley region.

Aquatic Adaptations And The Adoption Of Arctic Pottery Technology: Results Of Residue Analysis, Shelby L. Anderson, Shannon Tushingham, Tammy Y. Buonasera
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The late adoption of pottery technology in the North American Arctic between 2,500 and 2,800 years ago coincides with the development of a specialized maritime economy. Arctic pottery technologies present an excellent case study for examining possible correlations between hunter-gatherer pottery and aquatic resource use. Review of the timing and distribution of early pottery in Alaska shows that early pottery is rare and dates at the earliest to 2,500 years ago; the earliest pottery is found in small numbers and primarily in coastal areas. Despite expectations that pottery use would be strongly linked to marine lipids, biomarkers and compound-specific δ …

Grooming As An Agonistic Behavior In Garnett’S Small-Eared Bushbaby (Otolemur Garnettii), Jennie L. Christopher
Master's Theses
Social behaviors are a necessary component of group living and interactions between organisms. To correctly assess social interactions, researchers must be able to observe behaviors and interpret their function based on the behavior or the behavioral context. In primate species, grooming is often used to assess affiliations between group members and the consensus has been to always interpret grooming as an affiliative behavior. However, a number of avian, rodent and feline species have been shown to groom conspecifics aggressively. These instances of aggressive grooming appear most often when individuals are required to maintain close proximity to one another, such as …
