Xunaa Shuká HíT, The Tribal House, In Glacier Bay National Park And Preserve, Alaska, Emiko Furuya
Arctic and Northern Studies
This research analyzes the Tribal House project in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in Southeast Alaska, which the Hoonah Indian Association (the tribal government at Hoonah) and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve have promoted collaboratively. The Tribal House project is the construction of an indigenous structure in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, primarily for the use of Hoonah, the local Tlingit community. This research investigates the motivations of the partners in supporting the project. It concludes that the two partners' motivations, which derive from distinct missions, reconcile with one another in a complex way. The Hoonah Indian …
Science For Alaska: Place For Curious Learners, Diana L. Campbell
Science For Alaska: Place For Curious Learners, Diana L. Campbell
Communication
For over 25 years, Alaskans have been attending Science for Alaska Lecture Series, held during the coldest part of an Alaskan winter. The hour-long evening lectures would see from around 100 to almost 300 people attend each event. The scientific literature is quiet in regard to audience preferences in regard to the recieving end of science communication. This qualitative study looked at the audience of a science lecture series: who are they, why do they come and what do they do with the information. In nine taped audio interviews, the research participants described themselves as smart, curious lifelong learners who …
Heads Or Tails? Modified Ceramic Gaming Pieces From Colonial California, Lee M. Panich, Emilie Lederer, Ryan Phillip, Emily Dylla
Heads Or Tails? Modified Ceramic Gaming Pieces From Colonial California, Lee M. Panich, Emilie Lederer, Ryan Phillip, Emily Dylla
Faculty Publications
Modified ceramic disks have been recovered from historic-era sites across the Americas. Small unperforated disks are commonly interpreted as gaming pieces and larger perforated disks are often classified as spindle whorls. Here, we examine these interpretations in light of collections from three colonial-era sites in central California: Mission San Antonio de Padua, Mission San José, and the Rancho San Andrés Castro Adobe. We argue that the small unperforated disks from our study sites were two-sided dice. These gaming pieces facilitated the social cohesion of Native people living in the large, multiethnic Indigenous communities that formed around Spanish colonial missions and …
Changing Police Culture: Raising Awareness Of The Importance Of Mental Health, Mary Dombroski
Changing Police Culture: Raising Awareness Of The Importance Of Mental Health, Mary Dombroski
Justice
The suicide rate involving police officers has produced alarming statistics for decades. Until recently, however, little has been done to prevent suicide in law enforcement and even fewer efforts have been made to change the root of the problem. This paper reviews why a law enforcement officer may choose to take their life, looks at preexisting programs and resources that departments can choose to embrace, and supplies departments with a new approach to destigmatizing suicide within the police culture starting at the academy level.
Toward Arctic Transitions And Sustainability: Modeling Risks And Resilience Across Scales Of Governance, Berill Blair
Toward Arctic Transitions And Sustainability: Modeling Risks And Resilience Across Scales Of Governance, Berill Blair
Natural Resources
The Arctic region has been the subject of international attention in recent years. The magnitude of impacts from global climate change, land-use change, and speculations about economic development and accessible polar shipping lanes have intensified this focus. As a result, the potential to manage complex ecological, social and political relationships in the context of changes, risks and opportunities is the focus of a large and growing body of research. This dissertation contributes to the expanding scholarship on managing Arctic social-ecological systems for resilience by answering the question: What conditions improve cross-scale learning and resilience in nested social-ecological systems experiencing rapid …
The Effects Of Freezing And Storage Time On The Quality Of Reindeer Meat, George A. Aguiar
The Effects Of Freezing And Storage Time On The Quality Of Reindeer Meat, George A. Aguiar
Natural Resources
Restaurants, wholesalers and retailers of fresh meat require a year round consistent supply of uniform quality product to sustain demand and justify niche market costs such as advertisement and stocking product. Frozen reindeer meat could be stored, short or long term to increase availability provided there are no adverse effects of freezing. No studies to date have evaluated the effects of freezing and storage time on reindeer meat quality. Nine reindeer steers (castrated bulls; age 2.5 years) were fed a balanced milled ration at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Reindeer Research Program (RRP) facility at the Agricultural Forestry Experiment …
Sand Dune Field Paleoenvironment, Paleoecology, And Human Environmental Interaction In The Middle Tanana River Valley Near The Gerstle River, Subarctic Alaska: The Late Glacial To The Middle Holocene, Robert C. Bowman
Anthropology
This study was conducted to explore paleoenvironmental change within the Gerstle-Sawmill Dune Field (GSDF), located just west of the Gerstle River in the middle Tanana River valley, Interior Alaska from the late Glacial to the middle Holocene. Specifically, this study was undertaken to document human-environment interaction on the landscape. Geoarchaeological methods were used in order to determine the history of sand dune development across the area, how the local ecological systems changed through time, and determine prehistoric human use of environment and response to environmental and ecological change. The data collected from these locations was used to create a model …

CPAR Presents: A Data and Research Series for Community Impact
In 2011 the Census Bureau released a special set of tabulations that showed common statistics by race and ethnicity, ancestry, and country of birth for the 2006-2010 timeframe. This special product provided more detail than was available otherwise. For example, standard tables often only list a category for “Subsaharan African” but these tables listed figures specifically for those from the country of Somalia or listing a Sudanese ancestry. The Census Bureau plans to release updated tabulations for the 2011-2015 timeframe over the summer. Learn about how to access and utilize these powerful tables that provide information you won’t find elsewhere. …

Philosophy functions as a tool for tax lawyers. The various schools of philosophy are akin to a toolkit with different tools suited for differing projects where the more tools the tax lawyer knows how to use, the more effective he or she will be in the practice of tax law. This paper accordingly sets out to provide a systemization of philosophy relevant to tax law in the areas of Moral Philosophy, Legal Philosophy, Law and Economics, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, and Critical Legal Studies. A summary is provided of each followed by a discussion of prior …
Taking Stock: Organizing Open Access Operations Based On Researcher Practices, Andrea A. Wirth
Taking Stock: Organizing Open Access Operations Based On Researcher Practices, Andrea A. Wirth
Library Faculty Research
In 2017, the members of the Scholarly Communication Initiatives (SCI) Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) developed a strategic goal for the department to “create organizational shift” at UNLV in regard to improving campus-wide knowledge of and support for open access (OA). One method by which to work toward this multi-year goal was to gain additional insight about UNLV faculty members’ support of OA by assessing their participation in OA publishing and repositories. Through direct conversations with faculty, information gleaned through liaison librarians, and questions about the IR and related services, it was clear there was already …

Funding Science With Science (And, Admittedly, A Lot Of Math), John R. Ziegler, Dylan Hunzeker, Edward Lehner
Publications and Research
Scientific funding within the academy is an often complicated affair involving disparate and competing interests. Private universities, for instance, are vastly outpacing public institutions in garnering large, prestigious grants. Inequities also extend to the kinds of research funded, with government, corporate, and even military interests privileging certain types of inquiry. This work proposes an innovative type of research fund using cryptocurrencies, a fast growing asset class. Although not a total funding solution, staking coins, specifically, can be strategically invested in to yield compound interest. These coins use central hub technology to collateralise the network and speed transaction pace. Additionally. These staking …
The Development Of Auto-Tourism And Shady Grove Camp In The Buffalo National River Region, Leslie Anna Shelby Linck
The Development Of Auto-Tourism And Shady Grove Camp In The Buffalo National River Region, Leslie Anna Shelby Linck
Theses and Dissertations
Early twentieth century tourism in Buffalo National River region is an important link to the beginnings of Arkansas tourism. The Pruitt Historic District provides a window into the development of the rise of autocamps in the early 1920s. This process paper examines why tourists were interested in visiting natural sites such as Shady Grove Camp in Pruitt, Arkansas. To do this I examined the beginnings of tourism in America, and how it evolved up into the mid-twentieth century. This process paper also includes methodology and examination of primary sources used for the project portion. I compiled the results of my …

It is not rare that in the cases of mutilation the police authority would only give the body parts or remaining skeletons of the victims. The aims of the study were to find body height estimation formula based on percutaneous of foot length and foot breadth in Javanese females at Surabaya Muhammadiyah University. The type of research design was cross-sectional observational study. Samples were Javanese females student at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya , which was selected as the …
The Original Meaning Of “Religion” In The First Amendment: A Test Case Of Originalism’S Utilization Of Corpus Linguistics, Lee J. Strang
The Original Meaning Of “Religion” In The First Amendment: A Test Case Of Originalism’S Utilization Of Corpus Linguistics, Lee J. Strang
BYU Law Review
Originalism is the theory of constitutional interpretation that identifies the constitutional text’s public meaning when it was ratified as its authoritative meaning. Corpus linguistics is the study of word-use regularities and patterns, primarily in written texts. In a prior article, I argued that originalists should utilize corpus linguistics to facilitate originalism’s capacity to accurately uncover this original meaning. However, my arguments there were theoretical; this Essay provides a “test case” of corpus linguistics’ capacity to increase originalism’s methodological accuracy. This Essay accomplishes three modest goals. First, it provides a practical example of the application of corpus linguistics to originalism. This …
The Power Of Words: A Comment On Hamann And Vogel’S Evidence-Based Jurisprudence Meets Legal Linguistics—Unlikely Blends Made In Germany, Mark C. Suchman
The Power Of Words: A Comment On Hamann And Vogel’S Evidence-Based Jurisprudence Meets Legal Linguistics—Unlikely Blends Made In Germany, Mark C. Suchman
BYU Law Review
By offering an international and interdisciplinary point of comparison, Hamann and Vogel demonstrate that current American forays into corpus-based legal scholarship reflect only a small sliver of the full range of possibilities for such research. This Comment considers several key branching points that may lie ahead, as the nascent literature begins to mature. In particular, the Comment examines two vexing ambiguities in the corpus-linguistic agenda: the first centers on the ambiguous meaning of legal “empiricism”; the second, on the ambiguous relationship between words and actions. To achieve its full potential, legal corpus linguistics will need to move beyond mere description, …

For One Drop Of Blood: Virginity, Sexual Norms And Medical Processes In Hymenoplasty Consultations In The Netherlands, Sherria Ayuandini
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Hymenoplasty is a medical procedure done to alter the shape of the hymen membrane. Dutch women of predominantly Muslim migrant ancestry resort to the surgery to maintain the appearance of premarital virginity. This dissertation research studies hymenoplasty as a social phenomenon. It asks: how do the interconnecting issues of gender, religion and migration play out during interactions between doctors and Dutch patients of migrant ancestry in the medical and institutional context of hymenoplasty in the Netherlands? Findings were collected from 2012 and 2015 through participant observations of 70 hymenoplasty consultations in medical establishments in the Netherlands. These observations were complemented …
Physics-Inspired Replica Approaches To Computer Science Problems, Bo Sun
Physics-Inspired Replica Approaches To Computer Science Problems, Bo Sun
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
We study machine learning class classification problems and combinatorial optimization problems using physics inspired replica approaches. In the current work, we focus on the traveling salesman problem which is one of the most famous problems in the entire field of combinatorial optimization. Our approach is specifically motivated by the desire to avoid trapping in metastable local minima-a common occurrence in hard problems with multiple extrema. Our method involves (i) coupling otherwise independent simulations of a system (“replicas”) via geometrical distances as well as (ii) probabilistic inference applied to the solutions found by individual replicas. In particular, we apply our method …

Searching For Color In Black & White: Epistemic Closure, The Rit Archives, And The Colonial Roots Of White Invisibility, Andrew James
Searching For Color In Black & White: Epistemic Closure, The Rit Archives, And The Colonial Roots Of White Invisibility, Andrew James
Theses
When examining an image, a viewer often focuses on what they see and less often on what they are able to see. Nowhere is this as true, and as problematic, as it is with the visual representation of persons of African descent. This study describes how problematic photographic representation was used as a powerful semiotic tool in the Victorian age conquest of the other, was exported to early Hollywood (creating a lucrative hate-based industry), and was then pushed back into the cultural recesses, settling finally into systemic forms of modern oppression, empowered by the invisibility of whiteness. Images from the …
