Text In The Natural World: Topics Of Evolutionary Theory Of Literature, Laurence A. Gregorio
Text In The Natural World: Topics Of Evolutionary Theory Of Literature, Laurence A. Gregorio
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
The study of literature has expanded to include an evolutionary perspective. Its premise is that the literary text and literature as an overarching institution came into existence as a product of the same evolutionary process that gave rise to the human species. In this view, literature is an evolutionary adaptation that functions as any other adaptation does, as a means of enhancing survivability and also promoting benefits for the individual and society. Text in the Natural World is an introduction to the theory and a survey of topics pertinent to the evolutionary view of literature. After a polemical, prefatory chapter …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Many of us would agree that Senator J. William Fulbright’s vision of “a world with a little more knowledge and a little less conflict” will feature healthy ecosystems, appreciation of cultural diversity, and of course, delicious food. However, the world has been moving in the wrong direction over the past century. Today, 75% of the world’s plant food is made up of only 12 species. As of 2010, three (rice, maize, and wheat) provided nearly 60 percent of the calories and proteins that humans derive from plants (F.A.O 2010, 1999) and this trend continues (Khoury et al. 2014). This dramatic …

My Story Of Self: Social Movements And Cross Cultural Connections, Annelise Feliu
My Story Of Self: Social Movements And Cross Cultural Connections, Annelise Feliu
Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice
At the beginning of my internship at the Center for Social Well Being in the Peruvian Andes, I was caught up in the belief that good scientists should be disconnected from the communities in which they work, unobtrusive observers. During my time there, I learned the value of using local, indigenous knowledge as a means of creating sustainable interventions and services. The song I share herein is the product of spending time with local women and musicians, coming to understand their perspective of music as a harmonizing force, and that in many ways, this community was not so different from …

The Construction Of “Discomfort Psychological”: An Exploration Of Italians Teachers' Reports, Antonio Iudici, Matteo Fabbri
The Construction Of “Discomfort Psychological”: An Exploration Of Italians Teachers' Reports, Antonio Iudici, Matteo Fabbri
The Qualitative Report
Although there are several studies on youth problems in school, there are few studies on how teachers report psychological discomfort of the students and on what criteria does their procedure. Considering that schools increasingly make such reports to social or neuropsychiatry services, we wanted to find out whether it is flawless (bias, etc.) and how it can affect a student's career. This research presents an investigation on how the practice of signaling "psychological discomfort" at school is set up. Objects of the survey are the procedures used by the teachers to submit the psychological problems. The research subjects were Secondary …

The Insiders’ Experience Of An Undergraduate Level Ethnographic Fieldwork Training Program In India, Abhradip Banerjee, Krishnendu Polley, Arun Makal, Bhubon Mohan Das
The Qualitative Report
Research on fieldwork experiences is not something new to the discipline of Anthropology. However, undergraduate level ethnographic fieldwork training programs in India as a research area still remained unexplored. The purpose of the study described in this paper was to explore the proceedings of undergraduate level ethnographic fieldwork training programs in India. This article uses the authors’ own recollections regarding an undergraduate level ethnographic fieldwork training program carried out by a college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. All four authors along with their 21 fellow students have participated as trainees in this fieldwork training program. Through a qualitative analysis …

The Past In The Present: Federal Implementation Of The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Erin J. Hudson
The Past In The Present: Federal Implementation Of The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Erin J. Hudson
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation examines the implementation of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act by federal agencies. Specifically, it examines the processes that archaeologists, working in different geographic regions and for different federal agencies, use to complete NAGPRA actions and determine cultural affiliation. A total of nine case studies from two regions (US Southwest and Pacific Northwest) and three federal agencies (USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, and US Army Corps of Engineer) were used to document the complete NAGPRA process as it occurs in real situations, to identify the processes and lines of evidence used to complete those actions, …

Built To Last: Exploring Family Strategy In Dynastic Business Families, Mark William Auger
Built To Last: Exploring Family Strategy In Dynastic Business Families, Mark William Auger
Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations
Dynasties entwine family and fortune. They are organizational longevity outliers. Society offers a conflicting view of dynasties. On one hand, dynasties are associated with conflict, divisiveness, conspicuous consumption, and entitlement. On the other hand, dynastic business families employ people, produce and innovate products and processes, and give to community. Linked to values and enacted by strategic leaders, strategy organizes and mobilizes capital toward goals attainment. The firm-centric perspectives of the strategic management and family business strategy literatures overlook the systematic investigation of family strategy as a means of perpetuation. This grounded theory influenced study explores the components of a family …
A Case Study Examining How Experienced Teachers Adopt Culturally Responsive Instruction Through Participating In A Collaborative Inquiry Team, Lara White
Doctoral Dissertations
This participatory action research case study examines how experienced teachers build their understanding and practice of culturally responsive instruction through participating in a collaborative inquiry team (CIT). The nation’s public schools enroll an increasing diverse student population. Culturally responsive instruction (CRI) has shown promise as a mean to raise student achievement, especially student populations from marginalized groups and cultures. This study examines whether and how participating in a CIT can support in-service teachers in developing their understanding and practice of CRI. Research questions were designed to identify the tools, resources, and processes of a collaborative community of educators that can …

Architectural Effects Of Urban Renewal In St. Louis: An Examination Of High-Rise Housing Development In St. Louis, Tingting Lyu
Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is a study of the history and impetus for the low-rent high-rise public housing projects constructed prior to 1965 in St. Louis. Except for the largest and most well-known Pruitt-Igoe project which already had been the subject of a lot of study, other major public housing towers were John J. Cochran Garden Apartment (MO 1-3), completed in 1952-1953; George L. Vaughn Apartments (MO-1-6), Joseph M. Darst Apartments (MO-1-7), and Anthony M. Webbe Apartments (MO-1-7a). These later projects opened between 1957-1960. By situating these projects within the urban renewal movement and the context of public housing provision in the …
Workers In Poverty: An Insight Into Informal Workers Around The World, Mahima Saxena
Workers In Poverty: An Insight Into Informal Workers Around The World, Mahima Saxena
Psychology Faculty Publications
Gloss, Carr, Reichman, Abdul-Nasiru, and Oestereich (2017) present compelling arguments on a moral/humanistic need for I-O psychologists to consider workers that are living and working in deep poverty. Their case nicely shifts focus to large percentages of global workers who heretofore have only been represented minimally in the scholarly discourse in our field. I would like to accomplish two goals in this commentary. First, I would like to present a brief historical perspective on why industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology’s focus has been on POSH workers. Second, I will provide conceptual extensions to Gloss et al.’s (2017) focal article by …

High-Impact Practices In Anthropology: Creating A Bridge Between Liberal Arts And Neoliberal Values, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Brandon D. Lundy, Cheyenne Dahlmann
High-Impact Practices In Anthropology: Creating A Bridge Between Liberal Arts And Neoliberal Values, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith, Brandon D. Lundy, Cheyenne Dahlmann
Georgia Journal of Science
Neoliberal values are dramatically affecting higher education in the United States, with a focus on running these institutions as businesses and molding students into productive workers. This shift toward training and away from traditional liberal arts education at U.S. universities and colleges has occurred even as studies demonstrate that the ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving marketplace promotes long-term professional success. While neoliberalism and traditional liberal arts education are often seen as antithetical, we show how one anthropology program has combined these values into pedagogical practice through a select subset of high impact practices to improve academic outcomes for …

Theological Foundations Of Pastoral Care In Catholic Universities, Thomas V. Gourlay
Theological Foundations Of Pastoral Care In Catholic Universities, Thomas V. Gourlay
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
One defining element of life in any Catholic educational institution, whether it be primary, secondary, or tertiary, is the focus on pastoral care for staff and students. This paper provides a distinctly Catholic definition of the term ‘pastoral care’ and briefly examines the theological foundations that underpin this concept, particularly, in relation to its application in the Catholic university. The paper traces the motif of pastoral care through the Scriptures and, building on insights from St. Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities, Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990) and the broader theological anthropology of the Vatican II Council. The …
