Arts Advocate: Jeannette Edris Rockefeller And The Founding Of The Arkansas Arts Center, Kaye Marie Lundgren Aug 2017

Arts Advocate: Jeannette Edris Rockefeller And The Founding Of The Arkansas Arts Center, Kaye Marie Lundgren

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the dynamics behind the arts advocacy of Jeannette Edris Rockefeller of Seattle, Washington, who was the daughter and granddaughter of West-Coast capitalists and the spouse of an East-Coast philanthropist, Winthrop Rockefeller, to answer the question, “Did Jeannette Edris Rockefeller achieve the mantle of Art Advocate in her own right while participating in the Rockefeller family’s philanthropic mission of assisting America’s South?” Primary sources and contextual analysis show that Jeannette Rockefeller achieved the title of art advocate not only by virtue of her marriage to a member of the philanthropic Rockefeller family, but by virtue of her upbringing, …

Cultural Model Of Infant Feeding Among Women In Rural And Urban Bangladesh, Rumana Rahman Aug 2017

Cultural Model Of Infant Feeding Among Women In Rural And Urban Bangladesh, Rumana Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

Cultural practices influence infant feeding choices and have a significant impact on children’s physiological growth and cognitive development. This study examined cultural knowledge of infant feeding among woman in rural and urban Bangladesh. The findings of this research indicated that there was sufficient agreement among the respondents to constitute a single shared cultural model of infant feeding among participants in Bangladesh. Results also indicated intracultural variation within this model in terms of duration of exclusive breastfeeding, age at introduction of water, and weaning practices. Better understanding infant feeding can inform future programs aimed at improving early nutrition, growth, and development …

Engendering Landscape: A Gendered Analysis Of Migration To The Buffer Zone Of Carara National Park, Costa Rica, Jessica Ann Arends

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses gender as a lens of analysis for understanding the motivations of internal migrants in their decision to move to the 10 kilometer buffer zone of Carara National Park in Costa Rica. The thesis is in reaction to Wittemyer et al.’s (2008) article that statistically demonstrates that population levels at the borders of study selected national parks and protected areas across Africa and Latin America are growing due to in-migration. The study is composed of 30 interviews with Costa Rican migrants who live in three communities inside Carara’s buffer zone. This study used cultural consensus analysis and semi-structured …

Testing The Life History Approach: Assessing Cultural Bias In Archaeological Mussel Shell Assemblages In The Tombigbee River Drainage, Sarah Kate Mckinney Aug 2017

Testing The Life History Approach: Assessing Cultural Bias In Archaeological Mussel Shell Assemblages In The Tombigbee River Drainage, Sarah Kate Mckinney

Theses and Dissertations

Zooarchaeological mussel shell assemblages can be affected by an array of biases, one of which is cultural bias. Cultural biases may be exhibited in the transport of mussels from nonlocal mussel beds, and/or in preferential taste. There are a few methods used to help determine if cultural biases are at play (e.g., nestedness and detrended correspondence analysis). This thesis aims to test a new method, the life history approach, to determine if it is a viable method for assessing cultural bias in prehistoric mussel assemblages from the Tombigbee River drainage. Shell assemblages from the drainage previously have been demonstrated to …

Reduced Immune Investment With Energy Stress: Evidence From A Mouse Model And Human Studies, Alaina L. Schneider Aug 2017

Reduced Immune Investment With Energy Stress: Evidence From A Mouse Model And Human Studies, Alaina L. Schneider

Theses and Dissertations

During periods of energy stress, animals will prioritize and allocate energy from non-essential to essential tasks. Using a mouse model and published human data, we found that during periods of energy stress, energy is allocated away from immune function, and is prioritized for physical activity usage.

Sexual Dimorphism In The Femur And Pelvis Of Cebus Apella With A Randomization Experiment Examining Sample Size In The Fossil Record, Ryan P. Schaars

Theses and Dissertations

Measures of sexual dimorphism for six skeletal traits of the femur and pelvis of Cebus apella were calculated for 18 individuals to better understand primate skeletal dimorphism. A randomization experiment was also conducted on the measures of sexual dimorphism to examine sample size in the primate fossil record.

The Influence Of Phylogeny And Niche Differentiation On The Diets Of Malagasy Primates, Rebekka S. Hughes Aug 2017

The Influence Of Phylogeny And Niche Differentiation On The Diets Of Malagasy Primates, Rebekka S. Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have shown that haplorhine diet is affected by phylogeny; however, until now studies in Malagasy strepsirrhines were lacking. The evolution of differences in Malagasy primates’ diets appears to differ from the pattern shown in haplorhines. My results indicate that niche differentiation may be a stronger predictor of diet.

Phylogenetic Affinities Of Homo Floresiensis Incorporating Postcranial Characters, Kristina M. Feeney

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this analysis is to generate hypotheses regarding the evolution and ancestry of Homo floresiensis. Building on the previous study by Argue et al. (2009) by including a much larger sample of postcranial data for a more integrated picture of primitive and derived features across the skeleton.

Feline Object Play: The Influence Of Catnip, Keri Detorres Aug 2017

Feline Object Play: The Influence Of Catnip, Keri Detorres

Theses and Dissertations

Catnip triggers a unique olfactory response and results in a play-like activity in felines. This invoked response appears similar to, but more exaggerated and intense, than regular play. The play behavior of 24 cats with two identical toys, one of which was infused with catnip, was compared.

The Complexities Of Coexisting: Foreign Aid Organizations And East African Governments, Lynsey Cooper Aug 2017

The Complexities Of Coexisting: Foreign Aid Organizations And East African Governments, Lynsey Cooper

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

When initiating projects, foreign aid organizations cannot simply go into another territory and begin their work. On top of the normal procedures of nongovernmental sector organizations and insitutitons, those from outside the domestic borders face additional measures. These measures are typically put in place by governments, typically on a national level. This paper explores the types of tensions and/or partnerships that may exist between foreign aid organizations and governments when crossing paths in this manner.

To narrow the scope of this broad topic, this paper focuses on developmental aid enacted by foreign aid organizations in East Africa through a case …

Arriving And Departing, But Never Quite Leaving: Kimberley Research Narratives Over Times, Persons And Places, Sandy Toussaint Aug 2017

Arriving And Departing, But Never Quite Leaving: Kimberley Research Narratives Over Times, Persons And Places, Sandy Toussaint

Talking Heads Seminar Series

The vast Kimberley has been the focus of extensive multi-disciplinary, multi-sited research projects, such as those inspired through ecological, arts, linguistic, heritage, health, historical, and native title inquiry. Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons who live in the Kimberley, visit from time to time, or undertake the research never to return, have done a great deal of this work. Via reflexive attention to arriving, departing but never quite leaving the Kimberley, and in-depth consideration of the cultural, ethical, theoretical and practical need for place-based, human-inspired interactions over time and space, this paper explores what it means to be both ‘in’ and ‘out’ …

Role Exploration: A Heuristic Study Into How Various Roles Influence The Role Of Emerging Dance/Movement Therapist, Patrick Thomas Justin

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this study was to understand the roles I experience and how these roles inform my new role as an emerging dance/movement therapist. A qualitative heuristic study was used to explore the experience in the roles of student, peer, family member, and therapist. Data was collected through unstructured and semi-structured journaling, as well as journaling that occurred in response to movement sessions at the end of each data collection week. Movement sessions were structured in a way that each role was explored and then journaled about to find more depth in the data from the previous week. After …

Constructing An International Community, Monica Hakimi Aug 2017

Constructing An International Community, Monica Hakimi

Articles

What unites states and other global actors around a shared governance project? How does the group—what I will call an “international community”—coalesce and stay engaged in the enterprise? A frequent assumption is that an international community is cemented by its members’ commonalities and depleted by their intractable disagreements. This article critiques that assumption and presents, as an alternative, a theory that accounts for the combined integration and discord that actually characterize most global governance associations. I argue that conflict, especially conflict that manifests in law, is not necessarily corrosive to an international community. To the contrary, it often is a …

International Intervention In Bosnia-Herzegovina And Macedonia From The 1990'S Through The 2000'S, Katherine Brisson Aug 2017

International Intervention In Bosnia-Herzegovina And Macedonia From The 1990'S Through The 2000'S, Katherine Brisson

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This study researches international intervention and what makes it successful and unsuccessful. The analysis of the Bosnian and Macedonian interventions from the 1990’s through the 2000’s provides clues as to what makes intervention more successful for other international actors considering intervention. These two interventions are a great analytic tool because of their similar situations yet divergent outcomes and studying the successes and mistakes of each intervention is helpful in deciding what should be emphasized in future interventions. Bosnia and Macedonia were the two most multiethnic republics in Yugoslavia before their independence, each had forces from the United Nations and other …

Single-Grain Optically Stimulated Luminescence Ages Of Brownware Pottery In The Central Rocky Mountains And The Spread Of Numic Ceramic Technology, Judson Byrd Finley, Carlie J. Ideker, Tammy M. Rittenour Aug 2017

Single-Grain Optically Stimulated Luminescence Ages Of Brownware Pottery In The Central Rocky Mountains And The Spread Of Numic Ceramic Technology, Judson Byrd Finley, Carlie J. Ideker, Tammy M. Rittenour

Geosciences Faculty Publications

This study presents the results of a single-grain optically stimulated luminescence (SG-OSL) analysis of brownware pottery from four Late Prehistoric-period sites in the Middle Rocky Mountains, Wyoming, USA. SG-OSL of quartz ceramic temper provides improved age control for sites where radiocarbon dating has proven problematic due to old wood, recent wildfires, and calibration uncertainties. SG-OSL results are compared to fine-grain infrared stimulated luminescence (FG-IRSL) results from the same sherds and associated radiocarbon ages. We find that the single-grain technique applied to quartz sand temper provides improved accuracy and precision over both FG-IRSL and radiocarbon. We compare our results to directly …

Codis Str Loci (Csf1po, Thoi, Tpox, Vwa) Genetic Variation Analysis In Madurese, Ahmad Yudianto, Agung Sosiawan, Nola Margaret

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Endogamy continues to occur among the Madurese people in rural areas of the island of Madura, especially those areas of the smallest islands around the mainland of Madura. Endogamy as seen from a genetic standpoint will increase the frequency of homozygote genotypes. With regard to genetic variations, STRs of nuclear DNA and polymorphisms in mtDNA are frequently examined. Genetic variations in human undergo an evolutionary process through the accumulation of changes in DNA sequence, i.e. through the process of nucleotide substitutions that evolves in number with the directional development of lineage. So far, the genetic variations among the populations in …

Stage Managing Bali Agung: The Possibility Of Hybridity In An Intercultural Production, Susan Fenty Studham Aug 2017

Stage Managing Bali Agung: The Possibility Of Hybridity In An Intercultural Production, Susan Fenty Studham

Behind the Scenes: Journal of Theatre Production Practice

This paper explores notions of hybridity within an intercultural large-scale

show in Bali, including levels of innovation, synthesized processes, scenery and

safety considerations. As the original stage manager, I will discuss the mounting of

the show from a technical production perspective, giving attention to the use and

management of the stage space and its supporting environments. The focus is on

hybridity in the context of the term ‘syncretic theatre’, which “integrates performance

elements of different cultures into a form that aims to retain the cultural integrity of

the specific materials used while forging new texts and theatre practices” (Lo & …

Rethinking Gender And Justice In South Asia, 1772–2013, P Anagol, Djr Grey Aug 2017

Rethinking Gender And Justice In South Asia, 1772–2013, P Anagol, Djr Grey

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Amartya Sen has compellingly argued in The Idea of Justice that far from being a value-neutral term, ‘justice’ is a relative one, with competing claims made on it by different parties in any given context. Does this mean that justice is an empty concept, bereft of any meaning or devoid of self explanatory power? This special issue seeks to find answers to this question. ‘Justice’ came to embrace myriad meanings for the British Empire. Enlightenment thinking that hinged on rationality and logic, discarding superstition and religion, provided a platform for the discussion of rights and justice for the new generations …

Drinking Our Stories:Food Sovereignty In Ecuador And Amazonian Runa Relations With Manioc And Guayusa, Jacqueline Michelle Kramer Aug 2017

Drinking Our Stories:Food Sovereignty In Ecuador And Amazonian Runa Relations With Manioc And Guayusa, Jacqueline Michelle Kramer

Latin American Studies ETDs

Food sovereignty and the role of the state, international organizations, and social movements in its defense have been deeply researched. However, the role of small-scale farmers who continue traditional agricultural methods reflecting tenets of the food sovereignty movement, has been neglected in its relation to food sovereignty. This work aims to connect the plant-based ecological relationships with small-scale farmers using food sovereignty as an analytical discourse. Specifically, this thesis explores the relationship between Ecuadorian Amazonian Quichua people and two staple crops: manioc and guayusa. Through a gendered and epistemological analysis of food sovereignty, it argues that under the politics of …
