Linkages Among Population, Food Production, And The Environment At Multiple Scales, Daniel Ervin Ph.D., Daniel López-Carr Ph.D.
Linkages Among Population, Food Production, And The Environment At Multiple Scales, Daniel Ervin Ph.D., Daniel López-Carr Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Human population, its number and distribution on our planet, has a seemingly direct linkage to how much food we consume and how we practice agriculture. How this population-foodenvironment interface manifests across the globe is complex, non-linear, and both local- and scale-dependent. This essay is an overview of the population-food-environment nexus, providing recent history and statistics on these processes at several crude scales. We include a discussion of theory, review different drivers of the population-food-environment processes, provide a global overview of population and agricultural statistics from 1970 to 2010, and discuss trends and implications for Latin America, as well as some …

A Summer At Azavea Working With Nonprofit Organizations: The Summer Of Maps Fellowship, Sarah Gates
Sustainability and Social Justice
This report details my experience as a Summer of Maps Fellow at Azavea during June 2017 to August 2017. As a Summer of Maps Fellow I worked with nonprofit organizations, the Fair Tech Collective and the World Resources Institute, on two geospatial analysis projects. For the Fair Tech Collective I analyzed data on refinery flaring pollution, air toxin concentrations, and sensitive receptor populations to produce a series of maps and infographics detailing the impacts of petrochemical pollution in the San Francisco Bay Area. For the World Resources Institute I used data-driven methods to analyze conservation efforts in the Central African …

Is It Freedom Of Or Freedom From Religion In Organizations, Tracy H. Porter, Susan S. Case, Matthew C. Mitchell
Journal of International Business and Law
Organizations in the United States and throughout the world struggle with religious expression in the workplace. Though the US Constitution provides citizens with freedom of religion, as does the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by 169 Countries, this right to free exercise of religion has been translated to freedom from religion in many organizations around the world. Religion, a salient part of personal identity for more than 80% of the world's population, gets hidden if one's religion does not contain visible garb. The ability to learn from one another, put aside stereotypes, and discover commonalities may be denied to …

Agriculture Faculty Publications
Process-based computer models have been proposed as a tool to generate data for Phosphorus (P) Index assessment and development. Although models are commonly used to simulate P loss from agriculture using managements that are different from the calibration data, this use of models has not been fully tested. The objective of this study is to determine if the Agricultural Policy Environmental eXtender (APEX) model can accurately simulate runoff, sediment, total P, and dissolved P loss from 0.4 to 1.5 ha of agricultural fields with managements that are different from the calibration data. The APEX model was calibrated with field-scale data …
Effects Of Trophic Relationships On Oyster Reef Restoration Success In The Mississippi Sound, Virginia Robin Fleer
Effects Of Trophic Relationships On Oyster Reef Restoration Success In The Mississippi Sound, Virginia Robin Fleer
Dissertations
Natural and anthropogenic changes resulting from altered hydrology, hurricanes, variable precipitation, and the BP oil spill have all taken their toll on oyster reefs in Mississippi. In response, oyster reef restoration efforts are currently underway within the Northern Gulf of Mexico. In order to understand why these efforts succeed or fail, it is crucial to consider predator-prey relationships within the context of the trophic dynamics of oyster reefs. Thus, for this dissertation study I integrated a multidisciplinary approach to understanding key trophic interactions affecting oyster recruitment, growth and survival, comprising field sampling, manipulative lab experiments, and individual-based modeling. Spat settlement …
Examining The Perceived Influence Of A Comprehensive Youth Development Program For Promoting Black Male High School Persistence, Richard Gray Walker
Examining The Perceived Influence Of A Comprehensive Youth Development Program For Promoting Black Male High School Persistence, Richard Gray Walker
Dissertations
Black male youth in the United States drop out of high school at a rate consistently higher than their White counterparts. A lack of academic persistence contributes to lower workforce participation rates among Black Americans, which leads to lower national productivity and unrealized personal prosperity. Youth development research has developed an extensive body of knowledge regarding possible causes and contributing factors of minority high school dropout. Literature shows youth experience higher dropout rates when they grow up in adversity. Adversity risks such as dysfunctional families, cultural discontinuity between home and school, dysfunctional neighborhoods, or low-expectations from teachers contribute to graduation …

Development Of A 3d Collagen-Hydroxyapatite Composite In Vitro Culture Model For Osteoblasts And Osteocytes, Brian T. Golz
Open Access Theses
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by a severe loss in bone mineral density, putting individuals at elevated risk of bone fracture. The disorder is extremely prevalent, with high associated costs. Pharmaceutical treatments exist, but currently have severe drawbacks, and preventative measures are effective primarily within an individual's first two decades of life, long before the normal age of diagnosis. To better develop treatments in a high-throughput physiological setting, an in vitro model for bone cell culture that accurately recapitulates the in vivo cellular environment is needed. Thus, a 3D culture system has been developed utilizing porcine skin collagen oligomers (PSC) …

Integrated Neural Amplifiers Using Dc Clamping Topology In 45 Nm Cmos Soi, Ming-Shiuan Tsai
Open Access Theses
The neural recording systems have the potential to improve the understanding of central nervous system and may help curing neurological disease. With the increasing demands on neural recording systems, the requirements of low power and small area for such microelectronic systems increase. Devices are scaled down and different fabrication processes are introduced. The Global foundries 45 nm CMOS Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology which uses a buried oxide to isolate the surface and substrate reduces the leakage current and improves the overall power consumption of the circuits. This thesis relates to design and characterization of the amplifiers for neural recording …
Effect Of The Tnr Program On Genetic Diversity Of The Feral Cat Population At Abilene Christian University, Kimery Lin Hankins
Effect Of The Tnr Program On Genetic Diversity Of The Feral Cat Population At Abilene Christian University, Kimery Lin Hankins
Honors College
The feral cat population at Abilene Christian University is of primary concern to the community in terms of a wildlife management perspective. Due to the Trap-Neuter-Return program (TNR), initiated to maintain the cat colony, reduced genetic variability is highly probable. As a result, the suspected narrowed gene pool could create immunocompromised animals susceptible to certain diseases affecting the population. Some of these diseases could also have zoonotic implications for society. The effectiveness of TNR was assessed by comparing the DNA sequence obtained from the mitochondrial DNA control region between 17 cats of the feral population and 20 independently collected cats …

Contentions At The Human-Wildlife Interface: An Analysis Of Chicago’S Coyote Management Plan, Ilanah Taves
Contentions At The Human-Wildlife Interface: An Analysis Of Chicago’S Coyote Management Plan, Ilanah Taves
Sustainability and Social Justice
Urbanization and habitat fragmentation cause animal species to either adjust to human- dominated landscapes or suffer population loss. This paper examines the municipal challenges associated with coyotes, an animal successfully adapting to cities throughout North America. The presence of predators in highly developed areas challenges conceptual and spatial attempts to separate cities from nature. This report’s introductory sections critically examine the alienation of wildlife from the urban form. Theoretical perspectives from the discipline of animal geographies are employed to deconstruct problematic relationships between cities and animals, and reimagine a metropolis that considers the presence of nonhuman others. Engaging Jennifer Wolch’s …

Summer Habitat Selection Of The Lower Colorado River Valley Population Of Greater Sandhill Cranes, Kammie L. Kruse, Daniel P. Collins, Courtenay M. Conring, Blake A. Grisham, Warren C. Conway, Jeffrey M. Knetter
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Identifying habitat selection and use is important to understand in wildlife management because it informs habitat manipulations, conservation efforts, and species distribution. Habitat selection by sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) has been studied primarily on overwintering areas and a few summering locations. Summer habitat selection by the Lower Colorado River Valley Population of greater sandhill cranes (A. c. tabida) in the Intermountain West is not widely known, but has been identified as an information need by many wildlife management agencies. We captured and attached satellite platform transmitter terminals to 21 adult sandhill cranes on Cibola and Sonny Bono Salton Sea National …

Media, Family, And Friends: Normative Environment And Global Citizenship Identification, Stephen Reysen Ph.D., Iva Katzarska-Miller Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Prior research has shown that Bulgarian participants report greater global normative environment and identification with global citizens than U.S. participants; it has also shown that the relationship between country sample (U.S. vs. Bulgaria) and global citizenship identification is mediated by the perception that one’s normative environment promotes a global citizen identity. In Study 1 of the present research, we examined the number of global (vs. domestic stories) in U.S. and Bulgarian print media to find a greater number of global stories in Bulgarian media. In Study 2, Bulgarians’ frequency of media consumption was associated with self-reported global citizenship identification, and …

Corncobs In The Campfire: Evidence Of Cultivation Of Zea Mays At 44ch62, The Randy K Wade Site, Olivia A. Mehalko, Cameron E. Reuss
Undergraduate Publications
In 20 years of excavation, the Randy K. Wade site (44CH62) has only produced indirect evidence of the cultivation of corn (Zea mays) in the Late Woodland village. This indirect evidence consists primarily of corncob impressions on Dan River pottery. In the summer of 2017, an intact hearth was excavated which contained the preserved remains of multiple charred corncobs- the first direct evidence of corn. The hearth also contained remains of other organic materials such as charred corn kernels, bark, sticks, bone fragments, and acorns. This paper will examine the direct evidence for corn cultivation at the Wade site and …

College of Education & Human Development Capstone Projects
Research shows that too many students are graduating high school ill-prepared for post-secondary success. The purpose of this capstone was to explore early college in relation to student success. We conducted three independent but related studies that incorporated the perspectives of current students, graduates, and quantitative data. The first study investigated how ECHS graduates described their high school experiences, as well as how those experiences contributed to their college readiness and transition to college. The second study, a narrative analysis, sought to understand the lived academic and social experiences of students currently enrolled in an ECHS. The final study took …

Does Browsing Matter? : Predation And Population Declines In The Federally Endangered Schweinitz's Sunflower (Helianthus Schweinitzii T&G), Bryan Benson England Iii
Graduate Theses
Herbivory is a ubiquitous ecological process, yet its importance to plant community ecology and conservation biology is controversial. When Schweinitz's sunflower (Helianthus schweinitzii T&G) was listed as a federally endangered species in 1991, "Predation and Parasitism" were considered "not applicable" as threats, and it was the lack of large herbivores that was repeatedly identified as a threat to this species' survival. Two decades later, persistent negative population trends in many protected populations and anecdotal reports of "heavy browse pressure from white-tailed deer" led to suggestions that herbivory by deer could be impeding the recovery of this species. To test for …
