Achieving Totally Local Anticoagulation On Blood Contacting Devices, Rana Gbyli, Anna Mercaldi, Harihara Sundaram, Kagya Amoako

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

The recent years have witnessed an increased activity in biocompatibility research aimed at limiting biomaterial-induced blood coagulation. From 2008 to 2016, a total of $36,946,764.00 USD was awarded in grants to 213 research proposals and as large as 50.4% ($18,627,854.00) of that award monies were distributed to 101 proposals over the fiscal years of FY14 to FY16 alone. However, the complexity in blood responses to biomaterials, variability in blood function between individuals and animal species, and differences in medical device application and test setting all continue to pose difficulties in making a breakthrough in this field. This review focuses on …

Two Southern Women Writers: The Civil War Journals Of Emily Jane Liles Harris And Mary Boykin Chesnut, Robert L. Wilson Dec 2017

Two Southern Women Writers: The Civil War Journals Of Emily Jane Liles Harris And Mary Boykin Chesnut, Robert L. Wilson

Graduate Theses

Through the examination of primary texts, along with appropriate secondary criticism, I argue that Southern women during the Civil War were not the mythological “Southern Belle” that they have often been portrayed as, but that they were intelligent, strong, and passionate writers. I examine the farm journal of Emily Jane Liles Harris and contrast it to the private journal kept by Mary Boykin Chesnut, to explore the role that education and literacy, writing, and authorial voice played in women’s lives during the War. Close attention to the role education and background played in the lives of these women, the uniqueness …

Presently, diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States contributing to serious complications throughout the body as a result of poor glucose control. Adults with diabetes are at increased susceptibility to infectious disease because of hyperglycemia, poor glucose control, and decreased immunity. A protocol was created using The Four Pillars Transformation Program ™ to …

Learning To Heal: The Impact Of A Restorative Justice Program On Crime Victims, Jacquelyn P. Poplawsky Dec 2017

Learning To Heal: The Impact Of A Restorative Justice Program On Crime Victims, Jacquelyn P. Poplawsky

Theses & Dissertations

In the United States, someone is murdered, raped, robbed, or assaulted every 26 seconds (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2015). Violent victimization is a uniquely disorienting dilemma because it is the result of harm from another human being. Extensive research has shown that crime victims’ complex emotional and psychological needs are not adequately fulfilled by the dominant retributive system of justice. The other paradigm of justice that has received extensive consideration from theorists and scholars, with research that now covers multiple continents and 3 decades, is restorative justice.

Restorative justice theory and practice have become effective complementary, and at times, alternative …

Dopamine Levels In The Brain Of Rat Models Of Human Rheumatoid Arthritis, Amelia Stinson Dec 2017

Dopamine Levels In The Brain Of Rat Models Of Human Rheumatoid Arthritis, Amelia Stinson

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, debilitating, autoimmune disease that causes the destruction of bone tissue and the articular structures of joints. At least 30% of RA patient populations have cognitive impairment. Acidic dopamine (DA) is the principal neuroimmunotransmitter that links the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system together. The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of DA and its two acidic metabolites: 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in arthritic induced rats, and whether their levels vary across four different parts of the brain: amygdala (AMG), front cerebral cortex (CX), hippocampus …

Temporal Constraints On The Potential Role Of Fry Odors As Cues Of Past Reproductive Success For Spawning Lake Trout, Tyler Buchinger, J Marsden, Thomas Binder, Mar Huertas, Ugo Bussy, Ke Li, James Hanson, Charles Krueger, Weiming Li, Nicholas Johnson Dec 2017

Temporal Constraints On The Potential Role Of Fry Odors As Cues Of Past Reproductive Success For Spawning Lake Trout, Tyler Buchinger, J Marsden, Thomas Binder, Mar Huertas, Ugo Bussy, Ke Li, James Hanson, Charles Krueger, Weiming Li, Nicholas Johnson

Department of Religion Publications

Deciding where to reproduce is a major challenge for most animals. Many select habitats based upon cues of successful reproduction by conspecifics, such as the presence of offspring from past reproductive events. For example, some fishes select spawning habitat following odors released by juveniles whose rearing habitat overlaps with spawning habitat. However, juveniles may emigrate before adults begin to search for spawning habitat; hence, the efficacy of juvenile cues could be constrained by degradation or dissipation rates. In lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), odors deposited by the previous year's offspring have been hypothesized to guide adults to spawning reefs. However, in …

The intention of this project is to start educating children on the consequences of polluting our planet with seemingly harmless waste such as plastics. Many do not realize how small plastic objects can be fatal to many animals. We asked elementary school children to collect trash as part of their participation. Then the trash was used to make a poster featuring Ella the crab. This poster is paired with a children’s story book, where Ella and her animal friends are featured dealing with the consequences of littering. The story book depicts how people’s behavior in natural areas can harm innocent …

From Replication To Assembly, A Thesis On The Fate Of The Alphavirus Rna Genome During Infection, Adriano Mendes Dec 2017

From Replication To Assembly, A Thesis On The Fate Of The Alphavirus Rna Genome During Infection, Adriano Mendes

Open Access Dissertations

Positive strand RNA viruses employ a similar strategy with regards to their replication cycle. Generally, these viruses insert their RNA genome into a cell, followed by the replication of the genome and then the assembly of a particle. This pathway makes the genomic RNA of the virus, a substrate for at least three different reactions within an infected cell. These being translation, RNA synthesis/ RNA replication and assembly of a virion. This thesis will outline studies, which aimed at understanding how a model RNA virus controls when and where each process is carried out. The alphaviruses are a group of …

Revealing The Role Of Tet2 In Stem Cell Fate Decision Using Genetically Modified Mouse Model, Mi Ran Kim Dec 2017

Revealing The Role Of Tet2 In Stem Cell Fate Decision Using Genetically Modified Mouse Model, Mi Ran Kim

Open Access Theses

Epigenetic control plays a key role in regulation of stem cell fate and tumorigenesis. My research project is focused on determining the physiological and pathological roles of a critical epigenetic regulator, TET2, in regulation of mammary stem cell fate and mammary gland development using a mouse model with mammary specific deletion of the Tet2 gene. Our data show that knock-out of Tet2 in mouse mammary gland leads to disrupted mammary epithelial morphology and aberrant mammary stem cell (MaSC) fate determination, contributing to an expansion of the MaSC population and development of mammary lesions. Since aberrant MaSC fate is often linked …

Greenhouse Gas Offset Programs For Bates Study Abroad Air Travel, Caitlin Keady, Sarah Sachs Dec 2017

Greenhouse Gas Offset Programs For Bates Study Abroad Air Travel, Caitlin Keady, Sarah Sachs

Community Engaged Research Reports

In 2010, after signing on to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), Bates College set out a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2020. While the gap between GHG emissions and neutrality has been significantly decreased by emissions reductions, increased energy efficiency and increased awareness of sustainability on campus, Bates still has a substantial amount of emissions to reduce over the next few years to reach neutrality. Currently, emissions resulting from Bates-associated travel, including student study abroad programs, are not included in Bates College’s total carbon footprint. This project is part of a larger proposal to quantify …

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Gabapentin is commonly prescribed for nerve pain but may also cause dizziness, sedation and gait disturbances. Similarly, inhibition of the endogenous cannabinoid enzyme monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) has antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties but also induces sedation in mice at high doses. To limit these side effects, the present study investigated the analgesic effects of coadministering a MAGL inhibitor with gabapentin. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Mice subjected to the chronic constriction injury model of neuropathic pain were administered the MAGL inhibitor KML29 (1–40 mg·kg1 , i.p.), gabapentin (1–50 mg·kg1 , i.p.) or both compounds. Mice were tested for mechanical and cold …

The Psychological Significance Of Play With Imaginary Companions In Early Childhood, Tracy R. Gleason Dec 2017

The Psychological Significance Of Play With Imaginary Companions In Early Childhood, Tracy R. Gleason

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Although social play is common to many species, humans are unique in their ability to extract some of the benefits of social play through imagination. For example, in play with imaginary companions (ICs), children often practice skills that might be useful for later adaptive social, relational, and emotional functioning. While play with ICs does not provide the same immediate feedback that play with real others affords, this imagined, quasisocial context allows children to experiment with or rehearse events that might occur in real relationships. This symbolic enactment of social relationships might afford opportunities to experience not just social situations but …

Translating Genetic And Preclinical Findings Into Autism Therapies, Maria Chahrour, Robin Kleiman, M Chiara Manzini

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits and repetitive/restrictive interests. ASD is associated with multiple comorbidities, including intellectual disability, anxiety, and epilepsy. Evidence that ASD is highly heritable has spurred major efforts to unravel its genetics, revealing possible contributions from hundreds of genes through rare and common variation and through copy-number changes. In this perspective, we provide an overview of the current state of ASD genetics and of how genetic research has spurred the development of in vivo and in vitro models using animals and patient cells to evaluate the impact of genetic mutations …

Re-Interpreting The "Will Of God" In The Discernment Of Spirits According To Ignatian Tradition For Young Women In Vietnam, Tran Thi Linh Chi

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

Young Vietnamese women seeking to discern a religious vocation often confuse their own unconscious motivations and desires with what they perceive as the “will of God” for their lives. This study argues that a clearer understanding of the “will of God” will lead young women to a more mature decision-making process when discerning a vocation to religious life. The thesis investigates how the “will of God” has been interpreted and understood in the Christian tradition and uses these insights to develop a systematic structure aiming to assist young Vietnamese women in their life discernment.

It first examines how the will …
