Identifying And Reducing Variability, Improving Scaffold Morphology, And Investigating Alternative Materials For The Blood Vessel Mimic Lab Electrospinning Process, Evan M. Dowey Sep 2017

Identifying And Reducing Variability, Improving Scaffold Morphology, And Investigating Alternative Materials For The Blood Vessel Mimic Lab Electrospinning Process, Evan M. Dowey

Master's Theses

The work of the Cal Poly Tissue Engineering Lab is primarily focused on the fabrication, characterization, and improvement of “Blood Vessel Mimics” (BVMs), tissue engineered constructs used to evaluate cellular response to vascular medical devices. Currently, cells are grown onto fibrous, porous tubes made using an in-house electrospinning process from PLGA, a biocompatible co-polymer. The adhesion and proliferation of cells in a BVM is reliant on the micro-scale structure of the PLGA scaffold, and as such it is of great importance for the electrospinning process to consistently produce scaffolds of similar morphologies. Additionally, it has been shown that cell proliferation …

Challenges Of Stocking Small Ruminants In Grazing Plots With Dormant Browse Species, Sanjok Poudel, Uma Karki, Wendell Mcelhenney, Yubaraj Karki, Asha Tillman, Lila Karki, Anthony Kumi

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Abstract

Integration of browse species into the grazing system can increase the grazing/browsing opportunity; however, information is limited on their proper management for long-term use and persistence. The objective of the study was to determine whether it is safe to allow small ruminants to graze pastures consisting of dormant browse species. Katahdin ram lambs (9) and Kiko wethers (20) had access to the study plots containing four dormant browse species (mulberry, Morus alba; mimosa, Albizia julibrissin; white lead tree, Leucaena leucocephala; and bush indigo, Amorpha fruticosa) for two months. Type and extent of damage to the browse …

Evaluating The Evidence And Assessing Registered Dietitian Nutritionists' Perceptions Of The Complex Renal Dietary Restrictions, Alyssa Lee Welte Sep 2017

Evaluating The Evidence And Assessing Registered Dietitian Nutritionists' Perceptions Of The Complex Renal Dietary Restrictions, Alyssa Lee Welte

Theses and Dissertations

The renal diet is often regarded as challenging to teach and follow, and can easily lead to additional complications, including malnutrition. Recent trends in the literature have suggested a liberalization in the renal diet, though no studies have assessed whether Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are comfortable making this change. An original, cross-sectional survey was created for this study. 187 renal dietitians completed the survey which revealed that only 15.3% of participants felt it is acceptable to liberalize the standard dietary restriction on fruits and vegetables, and 13.6% said the same about the bean and legume restriction. 19.9% are extremely likely …

Something New Under The Sun: The Drecp And Utility-Scale Solar On The New Energy Frontier, Brent Resh Sep 2017

Something New Under The Sun: The Drecp And Utility-Scale Solar On The New Energy Frontier, Brent Resh

Nevada Law Journal

The Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP) is a programmatic intergovernmental, interagency effort to spur development of utility-scale renewable-energy infrastructure in the deserts of southern California. As a vertical and horizontal collaboration across multiple levels of government, the DRECP presents a compelling example by which to illustrate and evaluate Hannah Wiseman’s proposed “regional renewable governance” and “hybrid regional governance” solutions to the problems of fragmentation associated with the development of large-scale solar infrastructure. Although not regional in the sense that Wiseman proposed (its reach is limited to seven counties in California), the DRECP is nonetheless relevant to Wiseman’s proposed governance …

The Functionality Of Reboots, Dustin L. Shepherd Sep 2017

The Functionality Of Reboots, Dustin L. Shepherd

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to better understand how film reboots empower fans by offering unique insight as critiques of the original texts and by displacing hierarchies amongst audience, critic, and author. My hypothesis is that reboots, as an act of adaptation, allow audience members of the original franchise to become authors, in this case screenwriters. By extension these screenwriters become critics by highlighting, expanding, or even disregarding themes found in the original film series. This complicates the reboot beyond a simple capitalistic venture to make money and invites us to consider the way they position and displace interactants to better foster …

Tracing Trajectories In A Community Of Practice Through Podcasts, Richard W. Mansikka Sep 2017

Tracing Trajectories In A Community Of Practice Through Podcasts, Richard W. Mansikka

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this project is to understand how humor works in expert-novice identity construction in podcasts. I employ a Community of Practice (Lave and Wenger, 1989) framework to examine the social hierarchy among the participants of a regular podcast. I am particularly concerned with uncovering how novice members construct themselves and are constructed by expert members through humor, as well as how expert members socialize novice members to participate in the kinds of humor practices that index membership in the Community of Practice (CoP).

Rooster Teeth is an internet-based entertainment production company. They produce a weekly podcast which they …

Farm Deaths And Injuries: Changing Irish Farmer Attitudes And Behaviour On Farm Safety, Maurice Murphy, Kieran O'Connell Sep 2017

Farm Deaths And Injuries: Changing Irish Farmer Attitudes And Behaviour On Farm Safety, Maurice Murphy, Kieran O'Connell

Dept. of Management & Enterprise Conference Material

While the Irish agricultural sector accounts for just 6% of the working population of Ireland, it consistently has the highest proportion of fatal incidents of any sector - generally ranging from between 35% and 45% of all workplace fatalities in any given year. This was again evident in 2014 where 55% (30 of the 56) of the fatal workplace incidents were in the agricultural sector. Agriculture has an ageing workforce with the average age of an Irish farmer now standing at fifty-seven and farmers are eight times more likely to be fatally injured in a farm accident than the general …

Proteomic Analysis Of The Crustacean Molting Gland (Y-Organ) Over The Course Of The Molt Cycle, Talia B. Head Sep 2017

Proteomic Analysis Of The Crustacean Molting Gland (Y-Organ) Over The Course Of The Molt Cycle, Talia B. Head

Master's Theses

Molting in crustaceans is a highly complex physiological process involving negative regulation by two paired endocrine glands, the X-organ/sinus gland complex (XO/SG) and the Y-organ (YO). The XO/SG complex is responsible for making molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH) which negatively regulates synthesis of the molting hormones, ecdysteroids, by the YO. Analysis of gene expression in the XOs and YOs has led to the development of a proposed molecular signaling pathway which regulates ecdysteroidogenesis and subsequent molting in crustaceans. In this study, changes in protein abundance in the YO were characterized over the course of a molt cycle (intermolt, early premolt, mid premolt, …

Losing Control: The Consequences Of Individual- And Group-Based Social Exclusion On Latina Women’S Self-Regulation Of Unhealthy Eating, Dorris Kamiya Stewart Sep 2017

Losing Control: The Consequences Of Individual- And Group-Based Social Exclusion On Latina Women’S Self-Regulation Of Unhealthy Eating, Dorris Kamiya Stewart

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Social exclusion is a psychologically stressful experience that impairs people’s ability to control specific behaviors or events. In the current study, I attempted to reconcile competing predictions regarding whether exclusion is especially harmful to control, or self-regulate, when it is attributed to individual- or group-based characteristics of a person. Per the self-evaluation maintenance (SEM) model, social exclusion should be most detrimental to self-regulation when it is directed at a person’s unique traits, or individual self. In contrast, social identity theory (SIT) predicts that exclusion is especially damaging when it is directed at a person’s group membership. I examined whether …

Anti-Staphylococcal Activity Of Variovorax Paradoxus Eps, Patricia Holt-Torres Sep 2017

Anti-Staphylococcal Activity Of Variovorax Paradoxus Eps, Patricia Holt-Torres

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Variovorax paradoxus EPS is a gram-negative rod isolated from the sunflower rhizosphere at CSUSB. Preliminary research has shown that Variovorax paradoxus EPS has anti-staphylococcal activity in liquid and solid co-culture. Anti-staphylococcal activity of Wild type and V. paradoxus EPS 𝚫4519 on 0.5% YE agar with embedded S. aureus AH1710 supports the idea that a soluble molecule is responsible for this activity, as the agar acted as a physical barrier between V. paradoxus EPS and S. aureus colonies. Preliminary genetic analysis of V. paradoxus EPS identified three loci that suitable candidates for the synthesis of a potential anti-staphylococcal small molecule. …
