Considering Aspects Of The 3rs Principles Within Experimental Animal Biology, Lynne U. Sneddon, Lewis G. Halsey, Nic R. Bury

Biomedical Research and Alternative Methods Collection

The 3Rs – Replacement, Reduction and Refinement – are embedded into the legislation and guidelines governing the ethics of animal use in experiments. Here, we consider the advantages of adopting key aspects of the 3Rs into experimental biology, represented mainly by the fields of animal behaviour, neurobiology, physiology, toxicology and biomechanics. Replacing protected animals with less sentient forms or species, cells, tissues or computer modelling approaches has been broadly successful. However, many studies investigate specific models that exhibit a particular adaptation, or a species that is a target for conservation, such that their replacement is inappropriate. Regardless of the species …

Does Detection Range Matter For Inferring Social Networks In A Benthic Shark Using Acoustic Telemetry?, Johann Mourier, Nathan Charles Bass, Tristan L. Guttridge, Joanna Day, Culum Brown Sep 2017

Does Detection Range Matter For Inferring Social Networks In A Benthic Shark Using Acoustic Telemetry?, Johann Mourier, Nathan Charles Bass, Tristan L. Guttridge, Joanna Day, Culum Brown

Social Behavior Collection

Accurately estimating contacts between animals can be critical in ecological studies such as examining social structure, predator–prey interactions or transmission of information and disease. While biotelemetry has been used successfully for such studies in terrestrial systems, it is still under development in the aquatic environment. Acoustic telemetry represents an attractive tool to investigate spatio-temporal behaviour of marine fish and has recently been suggested for monitoring underwater animal interactions. To evaluate the effectiveness of acoustic telemetry in recording interindividual contacts, we compared co-occurrence matrices deduced from three types of acoustic receivers varying in detection range in a benthic shark species. Our …

Eating Disorders And Menarche: Can Emotions Toward The First Period Provide Insight Into Future Eating Disorder Development?, Tara Beck, Alison Mancuso, Joanna Petrides

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Objective: There is much ambiguity regarding Eating Disorder (ED) diagnosis, including when a patient actually develops the disease. Many studies have focused on behaviors during late adolescence as a crucial time for ED development, but few have focused on menarche. This study seeks to identify possible behavioral traits during menarche, including emotion toward the first period, which can be used as a warning sign for future ED development. Method: An anonymous online survey was distributed to approximately 1000 female students and faculty at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and 100 females on an ED Recovery Facebook group. The survey …

No. 11: Urban Food Security, Rural Bias And The Global Development Agenda, Jonathan Crush, Liam Riley

Hungry Cities Partnership

This discussion paper sets out the global, African, and South African contexts within which both urban development and food security agendas in Africa are framed. It argues that the pervasive rural bias and anti-urbanism identified in the international and regional food security agendas in the first decade of the 21st century have persisted into the second. In examining whether the last decade has brought any significant changes to the dominant discourse and its accompanying sidelining of urbanization and urban food security in policy debate and formulation, the authors find that there are promising signs for cracks in the edifice but …

Gascoyne Demersal Scalefish Resource Harvest Strategy 2017 – 2021. Version 1.0, Western Australia. Dept. Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

Harvest strategies for aquatic resources managed by the Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) Fisheries Division (Fisheries) are formal documents that are prepared based on a formal policy (Department of Fisheries 2015a) to support the decision-making processes and ensure these processes are consistent with the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD; Fletcher 2002) and Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM; Fletcher et al. 2010). The objectives of ESD are reflected in the objects of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA), Section 3, and the Aquatic Resources Management Act 2016 (ARMA), Clause 9, which will replace the …

Eastern Red-Backed Salamanders Regulate Top-Down Effects In A Temperate Forest-Floor Community, Carl Anthony, Cari-Ann M. Hickerson, B. Michael Walton Sep 2017

Eastern Red-Backed Salamanders Regulate Top-Down Effects In A Temperate Forest-Floor Community, Carl Anthony, Cari-Ann M. Hickerson, B. Michael Walton

2017 Faculty Bibliography

Understanding the role of species interactions as regulatory mechanisms for ecosystem processes presents a challenge to ecologists working in systems with high species diversity and habitat complexity. Recent studies suggest that interactions among intraguild predators, such as terrestrial salamanders and large arthropods, might be important for the regulation of detritivores, fungivores, and perhaps detritus within terrestrial webs. A key prediction is that interactions among predators weaken trophic cascades. Our research examined this prediction by removing predators for 4 yr from unfenced field plots to investigate the effects on litter arthropods, the microbial community, and rates of leaf litter decomposition. We …

Bridging Transpersonal Ecosophical Concerns With The Hero’S Journey And Superheroes Through Comicbook Lore: Implications For Personal And Cultural Transformation, Mark A. Schroll, Claire Polansky Sep 2017

Bridging Transpersonal Ecosophical Concerns With The Hero’S Journey And Superheroes Through Comicbook Lore: Implications For Personal And Cultural Transformation, Mark A. Schroll, Claire Polansky

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper explores how mythical figures and comicbook superheroes can 1) inspire personal growth, social and planetary change, and 2) explicate aspects of the deep ecology movement and transpersonal ecosophy that invite further academic inquiry while at the same time 3) speak to concerns that ignite the interests of popular culture and personal mythology. Likewise the ecopsychological significance of modern fictional characters in comicbooks, graphic novels, and films will be examined. It is divided into two parts. Part 1 provides a theoretical examination of how definitions of the terms myth and hero and hero’s journey are framed, and their implications …

Cortical Activation During Action Observation, Action Execution, And Interpersonal Synchrony In Adults: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (Fnirs) Study, Anjana Bhat, Michael Hoffman, Susanna Trost, Mckenzie Culotta, Jeffrey Eilbott, Daisuke Tsuzuki, Kevin A. Pelphrey Sep 2017

Cortical Activation During Action Observation, Action Execution, And Interpersonal Synchrony In Adults: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (Fnirs) Study, Anjana Bhat, Michael Hoffman, Susanna Trost, Mckenzie Culotta, Jeffrey Eilbott, Daisuke Tsuzuki, Kevin A. Pelphrey

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications

Introduction: Humans engage in Interpersonal Synchrony (IPS) as they synchronize their own actions with that of a social partner over time. When humans engage in imitation/IPS behaviors, multiple regions in the frontal, temporal, and parietal cortices are activated including the putative Mirror Neuron Systems (Iacoboni, 2005; Buxbaum et al., 2014). In the present study, we compared fNIRS-based cortical activation patterns across three conditions of action observation (“Watch” partner), action execution (“Do” on your own), and IPS (move “Together”).

Methods: Fifteen typically developing adults completed a reach and cleanup task with the right arm while cortical activation was …

Disaster Losses And Related Tax Rules, Jc Hobbs Sep 2017

Disaster Losses And Related Tax Rules, Jc Hobbs

Rural Tax Education

The dollar value of property losses due to fires, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, lightning, freezes, etc. can be substantial. Federal income tax regulations often provide relief by allowing deductions for losses of both business-use and personal-use property. This fact sheet describes losses to property, the process used to determine if you have a deductible loss, how insurance proceeds and cost share benefits are treated, and how to reconstruct records to document a loss. Examples help explain the rules that apply to property found on the farm including buildings, machinery, livestock, feed, supplies, personal residence and the contents and personal vehicles. A …

Activating Transcription Factor 3 Promotes Loss Of The Acinar Cell Phenotype In Response To Cerulein-Induced Pancreatitis In Mice, Elena N Fazio, Claire C Young, Jelena Toma, Michael Levy, Kurt R Berger, Charis L Johnson, Rashid Mehmood, Patrick Swan, Alphonse Chu, Sean P Cregan, F Jeffrey Dilworth, Christopher J Howlett, Christopher L Pin

Paediatrics Publications

Pancreatitis is a debilitating disease of the exocrine pancreas that, under chronic conditions, is a major susceptibility factor for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Although down-regulation of genes that promote the mature acinar cell fate is required to reduce injury associated with pancreatitis, the factors that promote this repression are unknown. Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) is a key mediator of the unfolded protein response, a pathway rapidly activated during pancreatic insult. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by next-generation sequencing, we show that ATF3 is bound to the transcriptional regulatory regions of >30% of differentially expressed genes during the initiation of pancreatitis. …

Combined Mnemonic Strategy Training And High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation For Memory Deficits In Mild Cognitive Impairment, Benjamin M. Hampstead, Krishnankutty Sathian, Marom Bikson, Anthony Y. Stringer Sep 2017

Combined Mnemonic Strategy Training And High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation For Memory Deficits In Mild Cognitive Impairment, Benjamin M. Hampstead, Krishnankutty Sathian, Marom Bikson, Anthony Y. Stringer

Publications and Research

Introduction: Memory deficits characterize Alzheimer’s dementia and the clinical precursor stage known as mild cognitive impairment. Nonpharmacologic interventions hold promise for enhancing functioning in these patients, potentially delaying functional impairment that denotes transition to dementia. Previous findings revealed that mnemonic strategy training (MST) enhances long-term retention of trained stimuli and is accompanied by increased blood oxygen level–dependent signal in the lateral frontal and parietal cortices as well as in the hippocampus. The present study was designed to enhance MST generalization, and the range of patients who benefit, via concurrent delivery of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

Methods: This protocol describes …

Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Lung Disease, Yoon Hee Cho Sep 2017

Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Lung Disease, Yoon Hee Cho

University Grant Program Reports

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are engineered nano-materials being developed and used in a wide variety of medical, engineering, and personal products with many potential benefits [1]. However, MWCNT have been shown to cause significant pathological changes in animal models, particularly in the airways, raising the concern that adverse human health effects will emerge with increasing use and exposure to these materials [2-4]. Potential bioactivity of MWCNT, including in vitro and in vivo toxicity and increased inflammation and pathology, has been attributed to their unique physical and chemical characteristics such as length, diameter, contaminants and rigidity [5]. However, MWNCT toxicity and/or …
