How Cultural Intelligence (Cq) Makes A Difference In Your Professional Environment, Michele Villagran
How Cultural Intelligence (Cq) Makes A Difference In Your Professional Environment, Michele Villagran
Faculty Publications
As workforces become more diverse, we face the challenge of managing increasingly diverse interactions. Many organizations apply the framework of “cultural intelligence” (CQ)—a person’s capability to adapt to new cultural settings or an unfamiliar cultural context. Rooted in academic research, CQ is a globally recognized way of assessing and improving effectiveness in culturally diverse situations. Leading organizations in business, education, government, and healthcare use CQ. This session will give an overview of CQ and its application within the information profession. It is designed for any individual that interacts with diverse cultures in any organizational segment.

CTG•CAG repeat expansions cause at least twelve inherited neurological diseases. Expansions require the presence, not the absence, of the mismatch repair protein MutSβ (Msh2-Msh3 heterodimer). To evaluate properties of MutSβ that drive expansions, previous studies have tested under-expression, ATPase function or polymorphic variants of Msh2 and Msh3, but in disparate experimental systems. Additionally, some variants destabilize MutSβ, potentially masking the effects of biochemical alterations of the variations. Here, human Msh3 was mutated to selectively inactivate MutSβ. Msh3−/− cells are severely defective for CTG•CAG repeat expansions but show full activity on contractions. Msh3−/− cells provide a single, isogenic system …

Evidence-Based Practice: Introduction Of A Gluten-Free And Casein-Free Diet To Alleviate Psychotic Symptoms, Yolanta Kreklow
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Introduction of a GFCF diet helps reduce psychotic symptoms, and gives another option for patients resistant to traditional treatment methods. Additionally, this diet provides a more holistic approach to treatment (augmenting medication therapy), reduces hospital stays, and improves outcomes.

Decorin-Evoked Paternally Expressed Gene 3 (Peg3) Is An Upstream Regulator Of The Transcription Factor Eb (Tfeb) In Endothelial Cell Autophagy., Thomas Neill, Catherine Sharpe, Rick T. Owens, Renato V. Iozzo
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Macroautophagy is a fundamental and evolutionarily conserved catabolic process that eradicates damaged and aging macromolecules and organelles in eukaryotic cells. Decorin, an archetypical small leucine-rich proteoglycan, initiates a protracted autophagic program downstream of VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) signaling that requires paternally expressed gene 3 (PEG3). We have discovered that PEG3 is an upstream transcriptional regulator of transcription factor EB (TFEB), a master transcription factor of lysosomal biogenesis, for decorin-evoked endothelial cell autophagy. We found a functional requirement of PEG3 for TFEB transcriptional induction and nuclear translocation in human umbilical vein endothelial and PAER2 cells. Mechanistically, inhibiting VEGFR2 or AMP-activated protein …
Controlling Water Exchange Kinetics And Improving Paracest Imaging, Jacqueline R. Slack
Controlling Water Exchange Kinetics And Improving Paracest Imaging, Jacqueline R. Slack
Dissertations and Theses
Generating MR image contrast from exogenous contrast media through chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) offers several exciting new possibilities, such as multicolored imaging, the interleaving of pre- and post-contrast images, and the potential to perform ratiometric metabolic imaging. The major limitation of the deployment of CEST imaging is the comparatively high detection limits of exogenous agents and particularly at the low B1 power levels required to meet SAR requirements. The large chemical shifts afforded by paramagnetic (paraCEST) agents permit more rapid exchange kinetics and therefore potentially more effective contrast agents. Despite comparatively large chemical shifts, many Ln3+ DOTA-tetraamide …

Dark Arts And Other Wicked Ideas: Harry Potter, Banned Books And Intellectual Freedom, Michele Mcdaniel, Ryan Mcdaniel
Twenty Years of Harry Potter: Celebrating a Phenomenon
Come explore intellectual freedom during Banned Books Week (Sept. 24-30) with this enchanted perspective inspired by Harry Potter.
Identifying certain ideas as dangerous - and therefore banned or otherwise restricted - is a perennial phenomenon, manifesting throughout every time and culture. When reading the Harry Potter series, one encounters the Restricted Section in the Hogwarts Library, where the reader is informed that books about the Dark Arts and how to defend oneself against them are found. However, only those sufficiently matured and prepared may read the restricted materials, and then only under the close supervision and guidance of a wiser …

Harming (Respectfully) Some To Benefit Others: Animal Rights And The Moral Imperative Of Trap-Neuter-Release Programs, Cheryl E. Abbate
Harming (Respectfully) Some To Benefit Others: Animal Rights And The Moral Imperative Of Trap-Neuter-Release Programs, Cheryl E. Abbate
Between the Species
Because spaying/neutering animals involves the harming of some animals in order to prevent harm to others, some ethicists, like David Boonin, argue that the philosophy of animal rights is committed to the view that spaying/neutering animals violates the respect principle and that Trap Neuter Release (TNR) programs are thus impermissible. In response, I demonstrate that the philosophy of animal rights holds that, under certain conditions, it is justified, and sometimes even obligatory, to cause harm to some animals (human or nonhuman) in order to prevent greater harm to others. As I will argue, causing lesser harm to some animals in …

Neosho Smallmouth Bass Movement, Spawning, And Associated Environmental Conditions In A Seasonally Discontinuous Stream: The Illinois Bayou, Arkansas, Jacob Herbert Martin
Theses and Dissertations from 2017
The Neosho Smallmouth Bass Micropterus dolomieu velox is a top predator and popular sportfish in Arkansas’ Boston Mountain streams. In this ecoregion, Smallmouth Bass are common in headwater streams that are prone to drying during the summer months. My objectives were to characterize longitudinal movements of adult Smallmouth Bass and to determine the timing of spawning events along with associated environmental variables during the likely spawning months of June and July. Thirty Smallmouth Bass were captured and implanted with radio transmitters in March, and tracked weekly in the Middle Fork of Illinois Bayou until August 2016. Age-0 Smallmouth Bass were …

Detect The Content Of Polar Components In Frying Oils By Preparative Flash Chromatography, Xue Bin, Cao Wenming, Yin Yujie
Food and Machinery
A fast method of separating and detecting the polar compounds in frying oils by preparative FLASH chromatography was established in this study. Applying the EOPC type medium pressure liquid preparative chromatography system as hardware platform and EOPC-specified FLASH column as separation & preparation column, petroleum etherdiethyl ether(8713) as elution solvent, 25 min/min as flow speed, we found polar components(PCs) and non-polar components(non-PCs) in frying oils could be separated properly when elution time of non-PCs was 11min. Separation speed was fast, as the time took by preparative FLASH chromatography was only 41 min, repeatability RSDs of preparative FLASH chromatography were no …

Chapter from Enforcement of Corporate and Securities Law: China and the World. Howson, N.C. and Huang, R.H., eds.
Corporate governance in Asia has garnered a great deal of recent scholarly attention.1 One topic that permeates discussions across countries is the enforcement of corporate and securities laws – with some countries relying primarily on public enforcement (i.e. enforcement by government) while others rely on some combination of public and private enforcement (i.e. enforcement by private shareholders). Further, understanding how enforcement is operationalised and its concomitant strengths and weaknesses enables us to better appreciate the actual corporate governance situation in many …
