Chemotherapy-Induced Tissue Injury: An Insight Into The Role Of Extracellular Vesicles-Mediated Oxidative Stress Responses, Chontida Yarana, Daret K. St. Clair

The short- and long-term side effects of chemotherapy limit the maximum therapeutic dose and impair quality of life of survivors. Injury to normal tissues, especially chemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathy, is an unintended outcome that presents devastating health impacts. Approximately half of the drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for cancer treatment are associated with the generation of reactive oxygen species, and Doxorubicin (Dox) is one of them. Dox undergoes redox cycling by involving its quinone structure in the production of superoxide free radicals, which are thought to be instrumental to the role it plays in cardiomyopathy. Dox-induced protein oxidation changes …

Silver-Haired Bats Associated With Abandoned Mines In Colorado Provide Insights Into Winter Habitat And Roost Use, Lea' R. Bonewell, Mark A. Hayes, Nancy Lamantia-Olson, Elijah Wostl, Kirk W. Navo
Western North American Naturalist
Herein we present the first published records (N = 5) of silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) roosting in abandoned mines in Colorado during winter. The records are based on internal surveys of abandoned mines during the winter period from 2004 to 2008. These noteworthy records provide insights into the winter roosting ecology and habitat use of this species in southwestern Colorado.

A Novel Study Of Predictive Utility Of Serum Melatonin In Diagnosis Of Systemic Sclerosis: A Case-Control Study, Faiq I. Gorial
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Melatonin is a pineal gland hormone with complex roles in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders. Immune abnormalities and disturbed endocrine secretion have been reported in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). A possible role of melatonin in pathogenesis of SSc patients might be present OBJECTIVE: To assess the predictive utility of serum melatonin in diagnosis of SSc patients. METHODS: A case-control study conducted at Rheumatology Unit of Baghdad Teaching Hospital-Medical City from November 2015 to April 2016 on 40 SSc patients diagnosed according to the 1980 criteria for classification of systemic sclerosis or 2013 American College of Rheumatology/European League …

Cellular Mechanisms Of Cortisol-Induced Changes In Mauthner-Cell Excitability In The Startle Circuit Of Goldfish, Daniel R. Bronson, Thomas Preuss
Publications and Research
Predator pressure and olfactory cues (alarm substance) have been shown to modulate Mauthner cell (M-cell) initiated startle escape responses (C-starts) in teleost fish. The regulation of such adaptive responses to potential threats is thought to involve the release of steroid hormones such as cortisol. However, the mechanism by which cortisol may regulate M-cell excitability is not known. Here, we used intrasomatic, in vivo recordings to elucidate the acute effects of cortisol on M-cell membrane properties and sound evoked post-synaptic potentials (PSPs). Cortisol tonically decreased threshold current in the M-cell within 10 min before trending towards baseline excitability over an hour …

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular effects of adding once-weekly treatment with exenatide to usual care in patients with type 2 diabetes are unknown.
METHODS: We randomly assigned patients with type 2 diabetes, with or without previous cardiovascular disease, to receive subcutaneous injections of extended-release exenatide at a dose of 2 mg or matching placebo once weekly. The primary composite outcome was the first occurrence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. The coprimary hypotheses were that exenatide, administered once weekly, would be noninferior to placebo with respect to safety and superior to placebo with respect to efficacy.

Collection Development And Preservation Of Indigenous Knowledge In Selected Federal University Libraries In South West, Nigeria, Abiola Abioye, Sunday Abiodun Oluwaniyi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
In view of the importance of indigenous knowledge in development process, this paper investigated the efforts of selected federal university libraries in South West, Nigeria in indigenous knowledge collection development and preservation. The study adopted a descriptive survey design that involved the use structured questionnaire, unstructured interviews and observation as instruments for data collection. Seventy six (76) professional librarians constituted the target population of the study; therefore seventy six (76) copies of questionnaire were administered to the professional librarians in the selected university libraries. The data collected using the questionnaire complemented by interview and observation were analyzed using Statistical …

Role Of Viruses Within Metaorganisms: Ciona Intestinalis As A Model System, Brittany A. Leigh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Marine animals live and thrive in a literal sea of microorganisms, yet are often able to maintain specific associations that are largely dictated by the environment, host immunity and microbial interactions. Animal-associated microbiomes include bacteria and viruses that vastly outnumber host cells, especially in the gut environment, and are considered to be integral parts of healthy, functioning animals that act as a metaorganism. However, the processes underlying the initial establishment of these microbial communities are not very well understood. This dissertation focuses on the establishment of a well-known developmental animal model, Ciona intestinalis (sea squirt), to study the establishment and …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been called “the most complicated disease of the most complex organ of the body” and is an increasingly high-profile public health issue. Many patients report long-term impairments following even “mild” injuries, but reliable criteria for diagnosis and prognosis are lacking. Every clinical trial for TBI treatment to date has failed to demonstrate reliable and safe improvement in outcomes, and the existing body of literature is insufficient to support the creation of a new classification system. Concussion, or mild TBI, is a highly heterogeneous phenomenon, and numerous factors interact dynamically to influence an individual’s recovery trajectory. …
