I'm not sure if it's normal to worry as much as I do. It seems like everybody else has different priorities. They're just not as concerned as I am about things. Like, why aren't you guys more concerned by how long it's been since the Yellowstone super-volcano erupted? That thing is forty-thousand years overdue.
Veganism As A Virtue: How Compassion And Fairness Show Us What Is Virtuous About Veganism, Carlo Alvaro
Veganism As A Virtue: How Compassion And Fairness Show Us What Is Virtuous About Veganism, Carlo Alvaro
Publications and Research
With millions of animals brought into existence and raised for food every year, their negative impact upon the environment and the staggering growth in the number of chronic diseases caused by meat and dairy diets make a global move toward ethical veganism imperative. Typically, utilitarians and deontologists have led this discussion. The purpose of this paper is to pro- pose a virtuous approach to ethical veganism. Virtue ethics can be used to construct a defense of ethical veganism by relying on the virtues of compassion and fairness. Exercising these values in our relations with animals involves acknowledging their moral value, …

Symptoms And Causes Of Foamy Bloat In Cattle, Zachary Christman
Symptoms And Causes Of Foamy Bloat In Cattle, Zachary Christman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The bovine stomach normally produces gases such as ammonia, carbon dioxide and methane. However when these gases become trapped in the bovine stomach because of a thick, frothy or foamy liquid it is called bloat. Cattle bloat is a very old condition and goes by many names but is primarily trapped gas within the bovine stomach. Readily digested feedstuff such as highly processed grain diets or an overabundance of fresh immature alfalfa often leads to a vast amount of small particles and carbohydrates in the rumen; this is the major cause of foamy bloat. Severe bloat causes death by suffocation …

Spinal Excitability Changes After Transspinal And Transcortical Paired Associative Stimulation In Humans, Maria Knikou
Spinal Excitability Changes After Transspinal And Transcortical Paired Associative Stimulation In Humans, Maria Knikou
Publications and Research
Paired associative stimulation (PAS) produces enduring neuroplasticity based on Hebbian associative plasticity. This study established the changes in spinal motoneuronal excitability by pairing transcortical and transspinal stimulation. Transcortical stimulation was delivered after (transspinal-transcortical PAS) or before (transcortical-transspinal PAS) transspinal stimulation. Before and after 40 minutes of each PAS protocol, spinal neural excitability was assessed based on the amplitude of the transspinal-evoked potentials (TEPs) recorded from ankle muscles of both legs at different stimulation intensities (recruitment input-output curve). Changes in TEPs amplitude in response to low-frequency stimulation and paired transspinal stimuli were also established before and after each PAS protocol. TEP …

[תוֹמכּ֣] In Josianic Reforms, Brian Taylor
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Taylor, Brian L.“ בָּמוֹת in Josianic Reforms.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2016. 360pp.
Through exposition of the Reform report recorded in 2 Kgs 23:4–20, it will be contended that the term בָּמָה signified sacred space characterized by certain cultic personnel, cultic rites and cultic apparatus. This proposed depiction will be examined in light of the broader textual and lexical evidence for further confirmation, expansion or possible refutation. Should the proposal find broader support, it will be further utilized to examine possible בָּמוֹת sites in the archealogical record.
Effects Of Ponderosa Pine Forest Restoration On Habitat For Bats, Shelly A. Johnson, Carol L. Chambers
Effects Of Ponderosa Pine Forest Restoration On Habitat For Bats, Shelly A. Johnson, Carol L. Chambers
Western North American Naturalist
Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests in the southwestern United States, used by 16 species of bats, are managed with thinning and prescribed fire to restore tree densities and fire regimes to conditions that existed prior to Euro-American settlement. Using 2 approaches (roosting and foraging) to categorize forest habitat for bats, we evaluated how restoration treatments may affect habitat use. We hypothesized that more foraging activity would occur in thinned stands because more species are adapted to open forest, but that more roosts would occur in unthinned stands where snags were unaffected by mechanical treatments and prescribed fire. During …
Market Encounters : Consumer Cultures In Twentieth-Century Ghana, Bianca Murillo
Market Encounters : Consumer Cultures In Twentieth-Century Ghana, Bianca Murillo
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
In Market Encounters, Bianca Murillo explores the shifting social terrains that made the buying and selling of goods in modern Ghana possible. Fusing economic and business history with social and cultural history, she traces the evolution of consumerism in the colonial Gold Coast and independent Ghana from the late nineteenth century through to the political turmoil of the 1970s.
Murillo brings sales clerks, market women, and everyday consumers in Ghana to the center of a story that is all too often told in sweeping metanarratives about what happens when African businesses are incorporated into global markets. By emphasizing the centrality …

The Future Of Food In Blade Runner 2049, Diarmuid Cawley
The Future Of Food In Blade Runner 2049, Diarmuid Cawley
Other resources
The science fiction genre has always been a hotbed for questions about the existence of life and what it means to be human. Food, like water and oxygen, is necessary to sustain life, but also is a key indicator of culture. One of the things that fascinates us about science fiction is how an imagined future culture might look. Blade Runner 2049, although not centred around food, interweaves food and agriculture into a dystopian narrative on evolution and a bio-engineered labour force, while asking us what it means to have memories and to be human.

Daily Rhythmicity Of Behavior Of Nine Species Of South American Feral Felids In Captivity, Sciabarrasi Bagilet Antonio, Raúl Delmar Cerutti, María Cristina Scaglione, Giuseppe Piccione, Roberto Refinetti
Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The authors analyzed the daily activity rhythms of the domestic cat and of eight of the ten feral felid species that are indigenous to South America. All species showed daily rhythmicity of activity in captivity under a natural light-dark cycle. The robustness of the rhythmicity varied from species to species, but the grand mean of 34% was within the range of robustness previously described for mammalian species ranging in size from mice to cattle. There was not a sharp division between diurnal and nocturnal felids. Instead, what was found was a gradient of diurnality going from the predominantly nocturnal margay …

Efficacy And Mechanistic Insigh Endocrine Disruptor Degradation Using Atmospheric Air Plasma, Chaitanya Sarangapani, Martin Danaher, Brijesh Tiwari, Peng Lu, Paula Bourke, Patrick J. Cullen
Articles
Endocrine disruptors are a class of contaminants found in water and process effluents at low concentrations. They are of concern due to their high estrogenic potency. Their presence in the environment has led to the search for effective techniques for their removal in wastewater. For this purpose, an atmospheric air plasma reactor was employed for the study of the degradation of three endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDC) namely; bisphenol A (BPA), estrone (E1) and 17β- 27 estradiol (E2) within a model dairy effluent. Identification of the plasma induced active species both in the gas and liquid phases were performed. Also studied …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Purpose: Antibodies specific for inhibitory checkpoints PD-1 and CTLA-4 have shown impressive results against solid tumors. This has fueled interest in novel immunotherapy combinations to affect patients who remain refractory to checkpoint blockade monotherapy. However, how to optimally combine checkpoint blockade with agents targeting T-cell costimulatory receptors, such as OX40, remains a critical question.Experimental Design: We utilized an anti-PD-1-refractory, orthotopically transplanted MMTV-PyMT mammary cancer model to investigate the antitumor effect of an agonist anti-OX40 antibody combined with anti-PD-1. As PD-1 naturally aids in immune contraction after T-cell activation, we treated mice with concurrent combination treatment versus sequentially administering anti-OX40 …

Endoglucanase Producing Potential Of Bacillus Species Isolated From The Gut Of Labeo Rohita, Saba Khalid, Muhammad Irfan, Hafiz Abdullah Shakir, Javed Iqbal Qazi
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In the current research, a microorganism, Bacillus aquimaris, had been isolated from the gut of Labeo rohita and classified by 16S ribosomal DNA genome sequencing. Sugarcane bagasse (substrate) was used for producing endoglucanase in submerged fermentation using this bacterium. Various factors affecting endoglucanase production were screened by Plackett-Burman design and optimization of significant parameters were carried out by the Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology. Results revealed that among nine parameters screened, concentrations of substrate, MgSO4 and (NH4)2SO4 were found significant. Maximum yield of endoglucanase (437.3833 IU) was achieved at 2.5% sugarcane bagasse, 0.01% MgSO4 and 0.5% (NH4)2SO4 after 24 …

Trophic Roles Of Tadpoles In Tropical Australian Streams, Katrin Schmidt, Melanie L. Blanchette, Richard G. Pearson, Ross A. Alford, Aaron M. Davis
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Tadpoles can be abundant consumers in stream ecosystems, and may influence the structure and function of streams through their feeding activities and interactions with other organisms. To understand the contribution of tadpoles to stream functioning, and the potential impact of their loss, it is necessary to determine their diets and how they might influence food-web structure. Using gut-content analysis and stable-isotope analysis of N and C, we determined the main food sources and trophic positions of tadpoles of five native frog species, invertebrates, and fish in upland and lowland Australian Wet Tropics streams. Omnivory was prevalent among the tadpoles and …
