The intricate interactions between viruses and hosts include exploitation of host cells for viral replication by using many cellular resources, metabolites and energy. Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV), similar to other (+)RNA viruses, induces major changes in infected cells that lead to the formation of large replication compartments consisting of aggregated peroxisomal and ER membranes. Yet, it is not known how TBSV obtains the energy to fuel these energy-consuming processes. In the current work, the authors discovered that TBSV co-opts the glycolytic ATP-generating Pgk1 phosphoglycerate kinase to facilitate the assembly of new viral replicase complexes. The recruitment of Pgk1 into …

Despite the major advances in developing diagnostic techniques and effective treatments, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) is still the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. While considerable progress has been achieved to identify gene variations and environmental factors that contribute to CVD, much less is known about the role of “gene–environment interactions” in predisposing individuals to CVD. Our chemical environment has significantly changed in the last few decades, and there are more than 100,000 synthetic chemicals in the market. Recent large-scale human population studies have associated exposure to certain chemicals including many endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with increased CVD risk, …

Brain development and behavior are sensitive to a variety of environmental influences including social interactions and physicochemical stressors. Sensory input in situ is a mosaic of both enrichment and stress, yet little is known about how multiple environmental factors interact to affect brain anatomical structures, circuits and cognitive function. In this study, we addressed these issues by testing the individual and combined effects of sub-adult thermal stress, larval density and early-adult living spatial enrichment on brain anatomy and olfactory associative learning in adult Drosophila melanogaster. In response to heat stress, the mushroom bodies (MBs) were the most volumetrically impaired among …

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading cause of death in individuals with refractory acquired epilepsy. Cardiorespiratory failure is the most likely cause in most cases, and central autonomic dysfunction has been implicated as a contributing factor to SUDEP. Neurons of the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) in the brainstem vagal complex receive and integrate vagally mediated information regarding cardiorespiratory and other autonomic functions, and GABAergic inhibitory NTS neurons play an essential role in modulating autonomic output. We assessed the activity of GABAergic NTS neurons as a function of epilepsy development in the pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE) model of …

The Republic of Ireland reports a relatively low prevalence of Johne’s disease (JD) compared to international counterparts. Postulated reasons for this include a lower average herd size and a grass-based production system. Ireland also engages in high levels of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) testing. As interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) is believed to play a key role in protecting against JD, it is our hypothesis that administration of purified protein derivative (PPD), as part of the bTB test, is associated with a systemic increase in IFN-γ production, which may potentially limit clinical progression of the disease. We studied 265 cows (202 Friesian and 63 …

Deep Ecology In William Gilpin's Sermons, Mark K. Fulk
Deep Ecology In William Gilpin's Sermons, Mark K. Fulk
Conference on Sermon Studies
Deep Ecology seeks to minimize or erase human impact on the natural world. As a homilist, the eighteenth-century picturesque travel-writer, philosopher, and cleric William Gilpin provides insights that accord with and complicate our understanding of Deep Ecology. His role as an Anglican cleric is mostly forgotten, although his collected religious works comprise four volumes and also build on, define, and problematize the aesthetics he develops in his other works. If the major tenet of the Deep Ecology movement is the erasure or minimalizing of the human, Gilpin’s practice as a pastor and his depiction of Christians on their journeys of …

The relatively new Common Core Standards seem threatening to educators at first, but with careful planning and the assistance of seasoned English language arts teachers, the Core Standards become manageable. This article presents a variety of literature and informational texts, suitable for the K- 12 grade levels, which focus on social justice and global thinking. Each text listed has an activity that was designed to meet at least one of the Common Core Standards and also includes the integration of technology and creativity in literacy instruction. With resources like the ones discussed in this article, teachers can easily tackle the …

The Neglected Readers: Differentiating Instruction For Academically Gifted And Talented Learners, Laurie A. Sharp, Patricia Clemmer
The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction
The educational needs for academically gifted and talented learners (AGTLs) are often not met in public schools as much of schools’ resources are directed towards meeting minimum performance standards. During reading instruction, AGTLs require differentiation with curriculum and instructional strategies that provide purpose and authentication of reading instruction to prevent boredom, deepen their love for reading and broaden their interests, and encourage them to move from avid reading to critical reading. The purpose of this article is to describe several research-based strategies within each of these areas to assist educators with differentiated reading instruction for AGTLs.

In Praise Of Miscues And The Comprehension Of Complex Texts, Stephen B. Kucer Dr.
The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction
The reading of complex texts is a critical dimension of the Common Core State Standards. We have little knowledge, however, of the impact of reader miscues on the comprehension of such texts. This issue is explored through a look at fourth graders transactions with literary and scientific texts. The impact of two types of reading behaviors on comprehension are examined: (1) portions of text read with no miscues and (2) portions of text read with meaning maintaining miscues. It was found that readers were significantly more likely to comprehend and recall information that was read with meaning maintaining miscues than …

Using Their Own Stories: A Culturally Relevant Response To Intervention, Maggie Struck, Mark D. Vagle
The Journal of Balanced Literacy Research and Instruction
Driven by sociocultural theories, First Author, Maggie conducted a critical action research study of her attempts to enact culturally relevant practices in a Response to Intervention (RtI) reading group. A grounded theory approach informed the analysis of her data. In this paper, we theorize three themes that were generated from the data analysis. We assert that in order to prevent RtI from becoming another unsuccessful, de-contextualized, large-scale effort, teachers and students would benefit from a culturally relevant response to intervention—a commitment to locate the contextual contingencies in which RtI is being implemented; to pay attention to what happens in the …
Critical Digital Literacies Across Scales And Beneath The Screen, Noah Asher Golden
Critical Digital Literacies Across Scales And Beneath The Screen, Noah Asher Golden
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Digital technologies and education scholarship tend to focus on either individual creative design or analysis of the political economy. To better understand how ideologies travel across networks, critical digital literacies must focus on enactments beneath the screen, as the linguistic constructs known as software can enact interests across scales of activity to “disembed” local actions and meaning. Investigations of these mobilities and disembedding effects challenge popular notions of digital technologies as neutral, rendering overt the ways that algorithms can naturalize manifestations of power and social arrangements. Such a framework allows for descriptive analyses of the ways hegemonic discourses are enacted …

Although hardly noticed or formally recognized, urban foraging by humans probably occurs in all urban settings around the world. We draw from research in India, South Africa, Sweden, and the United States to demonstrate the ubiquity and varied nature of urban foraging in different contexts. Across these different contexts, we distill seven themes that characterize and thereby advance thinking about research and the understanding of urban foraging. We show that it is widespread and occurs across a variety of urban spaces and places. The species used and the local practices vary between contexts, and are in constant flux as urban …

The invention of depth sensors for mobile devices, has led to availability of relatively inexpensive high-resolution depth and visual (RGB) sensing for a wide range of applications. The complementary nature of the depth and visual information opens up new opportunities to solve fundamental problems in object and activity recognition, people tracking, 3D mapping and localization, etc. One of the most interesting challenges that can be tackled by using these sensors is tracking the body movements of athletes and providing natural interaction as a result. In this study depth sensors and gesture recognition tools will be used to analyze the position …

Assessment Of Intra And Interregional Genetic Variation In The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander, Plethodon Cinereus, Via Analysis Of Novel Microsatellite Markers, Alexander C. Cameron
Biology
The red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) has long-served as a model system in ecology, evolution, and behavior, and studies surveying molecular variation in this species have become increasingly common over the past decade. However, difficulties are commonly encountered when extending microsatellite markers to populations that are unstudied from a genetic perspective due to high levels of genetic differentiation across this species’ range. To ameliorate this issue, we used 454 pyrosequencing to identify hundreds of microsatellite loci. We then screened 40 of our top candidate loci in populations in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio—including an isolated island population ~ 4.5 km off the …

Effect Of Preconditioning And Hypothermia In Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury To The Endothelial Cells Of Blood Vessels In Oryctolagus Cuniculus, Mohamad F. Ismet, Yefta Moenadjat, Aria Kekalih
The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI) remain a problem in post–hypoxia period, leading to remote organ injury. Studies showed that ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and hypothermia (HI) let destructive effect of ischemia to be minimized. The aim of study was to find out the impacts of interventions such as IPC and HI on morphology and function of the endothelial distal to ligation (ischemia) and contralateral vessel (I/RI). Method. An experimental study carried out by ligation the right common femoral artery of Oryctolagus cuniculus to induce ischemia. Endothelial cells distal to ligation and contralateral side was subjected to investigation. The effect of IPC and …

Effect Of Ischemia Preconditioning And Hypothermia To Gastric Mucosal Reperfusion Injury Post Ischemia In Lower Extremities Of Oryctolagus Cuniculus, Benjamin Ngatio, Yefta Moenadjat, Aria Kekalih
The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Immediate revascularization of ischemic tissue does not always produce positive results since various reactions following formation of reactive oxygen species and activation of complement system might lead to ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI). It was hypothesized that ischemia preconditioning (IPC) and hypothermia (HI) have a role to reduce the impact of (I/RI). Method. An experimental study was carried out on Oryctolagus cuniculus (New Zealand White rabbit) to find out the efficacy of IPC and HI. Subjects were divided into four groups; a control (consist of two subjects) and three treatment groups (each consist of six subjects), namely I/RI group, IPC group, …

Ependymal cilia protrude into the central canal of the brain ventricles and spinal cord to circulate the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). Ependymal cilia dysfunction can hinder the movement of CSF leading to an abnormal accumulation of CSF within the brain known as hydrocephalus. Although the etiology of hydrocephalus was studied before, the effects of ethanol ingestion on ependymal cilia function have not been investigated in vivo. Here, we report three distinct types of ependymal cilia, type-I, type-II and type-III classified based upon their beating frequency, their beating angle, and their distinct localization within the mouse brain-lateral ventricle. Our studies …
