The Role Of The Intestinal Microbiota In Obesity By Warren Burke Oct 2017

The Role Of The Intestinal Microbiota In Obesity By Warren Burke

Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research

The gut microbiota collectively act as a metabolic organ supplying energy for themselves and for the host they inhabit. This symbiotic relationship begins at the onset of a human birth and continues throughout the lifespan. Who identifies as the more robust symbiote has yet to be identified. The number of bacterial cells to human cells reveals a staggering disparity. The majority of estimates place the total number of microbial cells on and in the human body at 100 trillion, while the whole of the human contains 10 trillion. The bacterial versus human genome is equally disconcerting as the number of …

Challenges And Rewards Of Creating A Caregiving Website For New London, Connecticut, Mónika López-Anuarbe, María Amparo Cruz-Saco, Joyce Bennett

Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice

This paper addresses the successes and challenges of our community-engaged learning experience on long-term caregiving for Hispanics in New London, Connecticut. Our earlier research revealed lack of accessible information for caregivers in this community. Accordingly, we developed a website in a culturally and linguistically competent format to help alleviate such information shortage. Before launching the website, we used focus groups for constructive feedback to enhance its helpfulness. This four-year long research project will culminate with the website activation and another partnership between Connecticut College and community organizations. We recognize the importance of collaborating with community partners to manage and ensure …

Situating Open Educational Resources For Csu Faculty And Student Success, Leslie Kennedy Edd, Lesley Farmer Phd Oct 2017

Situating Open Educational Resources For Csu Faculty And Student Success, Leslie Kennedy Edd, Lesley Farmer Phd

SJSU Open Access Conference

Economic inequity is a pervasive aspect of the population of California State University (CSU) students. There are significant differences in the ability of our students to afford the total cost of their CSU education. Not only are they afforded less access to educational materials, but they also may be disadvantaged in knowing how to take advantage of those resources.

Providing free, open, and/or low-cost options for course materials is a CSU Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) strategy to significantly reduce the impact of economic inequities. Thus, we situate open as enabling equitable academic opportunities and successful educational outcomes for all CSU …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 1051-1066, 2017. Studies are conflicting to whether low volume resistance training (RT) is as effective as high-volume RT protocols with respect to promoting morphological and molecular adaptations. Thus, the aim of the present study was to compare, using a climbing a vertical ladder, the effects of 8 weeks, 3 times per week, resistance training with 4 sets (RT4), resistance training with 8 sets (RT8) and without resistance training control (CON) on gastrocnemius muscle proteome using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and cross sectional area (CSA) of rats. Fifty-two proteins were identified by LC-MS/MS, …

A Pre-Exercise Dose Of Melatonin Can Alter Substrate Use During Exercise, Cardyl P. Trionfante, Greggory R. Davis, Tyler M. Farney, Ryan W. Miskowiec, Arnold G. Nelson Oct 2017

A Pre-Exercise Dose Of Melatonin Can Alter Substrate Use During Exercise, Cardyl P. Trionfante, Greggory R. Davis, Tyler M. Farney, Ryan W. Miskowiec, Arnold G. Nelson

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 1029-1037, 2017. Notwithstanding the lack of exercise research, several reviews have championed the use of melatonin to combat metabolic syndrome. Therefore, this study compared substrate utilization during a 30-minute (min) graded exercise protocol following the ingestion of either 6 mg melatonin (M) or a placebo (P). Participants (12 women, 12 men) performed stages 1-5 of the Naughton graded exercise protocol (6 min per stage). The protocol was repeated 4 times (2x M, 2x P) at the same time of day with one week separating each session. Expired gases were monitored, VO2 and respiratory …

The Prolongation Of The Incarnation: Toward A Biblical Understanding Of The Church, Thomas A. Baima Oct 2017

The Prolongation Of The Incarnation: Toward A Biblical Understanding Of The Church, Thomas A. Baima

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author argues that the church is a prolongation of the Incarnation. He begins by explaining the issues involved in this position. Then he turns to Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, where we read: “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Col 1:24). Then he turns to Caesarius of Arles, who speaks of the church as persons grafted into one body that enables them to be Christ to others. Christ acts through the members, using the …

Christ Our Center: Joseph Ratzinger’S Witness, Edward T. Oakes Oct 2017

Christ Our Center: Joseph Ratzinger’S Witness, Edward T. Oakes

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author first traces the rise of today’s postmodernism from nineteenth-century relativism, both of which reject claims to the possession of an absolute and universal truth. They see such a claim as an imposition of one’s own limited perspective on others. This phenomenon rules out Christ as the center of history. He then notes that for him ecumenism is not just for unity in the church but for a united claim to the centrality and lordship of Christ over the universe. He pursues this line of thought through the Christology of Cardinal Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI. He …

The Mundelein Encounter: A Catholic-Evangelical Model Of Ecumenism, John H. Armstrong, Thomas A. Baima Oct 2017

The Mundelein Encounter: A Catholic-Evangelical Model Of Ecumenism, John H. Armstrong, Thomas A. Baima

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

In the fall of 2013, a new initiative was undertaken in Chicago for Christian unity at “grass-roots” level. This initiative, which eventually became known as the Catholic-Evangelical Conversation (CEC), had its origin in the relationships of several individuals associated in different ways with the evangelical Lausanne Movement. The Lausanne vision, expressed in The Cape Town Commitment (https://www.lausanne.org/content/ctc/ctcommitment), animated the early discussions of John Armstrong, Norberto Saracco, and Douglas Birdsall, who shared their vision with Thomas A. Baima and Robert Barron. Individuals associated with the Lausanne Movement formed the early core of the evangelicals who became involved with the CEC. A …

Dazzling Darkness: Buddhism And Chiara Lubich’S Mystical Writings, Donald W. Mitchell Oct 2017

Dazzling Darkness: Buddhism And Chiara Lubich’S Mystical Writings, Donald W. Mitchell

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author begins by presenting two experiences of what he terms “dazzling darkness,” one in a Christian context and the other in a Buddhist context. He then looks at the Buddhist traditions in India and China to propose an explanation for the experience in the Buddhist context. In so doing, he connects darkness to suffering and light to Nirvana and Buddha-nature. Then he turns to the mystical writings of Chiara Lubich to propose an explanation for the Christian experience and its relation to suffering and the luminosity of God in suffering through Jesus Forsaken. In the section on the writings …

You Are What You Eat: Gastronomy & Geography Of Southern Spain, Katherine F. Perry Oct 2017

You Are What You Eat: Gastronomy & Geography Of Southern Spain, Katherine F. Perry

The Catalyst

Using empirical and numeric data, this study explores the use of food as a proxy to understand the cultural-historical geography of southern Spain. After spending three months in Granada, Spain, I compiled the most commonly used thirty-five ingredients from a selection of Spanish cookbooks and contextualized them within the broader history of Spain. The elements of traditional Andalucían cooking fit into three primary chapters of Iberian history: Roman occupation, the Moorish invasion beginning in the 8th century, and the Columbian exchange, or the exchange of goods that took place between the Americas and Old World following European discovery of …

An Organismal Model For Gene Regulatory Networks In The Gut-Associated Immune Response, Katherine M. Buckley, J P. Rast Oct 2017

An Organismal Model For Gene Regulatory Networks In The Gut-Associated Immune Response, Katherine M. Buckley, J P. Rast

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The gut epithelium is an ancient site of complex communication between the animal immune system and the microbial world. While elements of self-non-self receptors and effector mechanisms differ greatly among animal phyla, some aspects of recognition, regulation, and response are broadly conserved. A gene regulatory network (GRN) approach provides a means to investigate the nature of this conservation and divergence even as more peripheral functional details remain incompletely understood. The sea urchin embryo is an unparalleled experimental model for detangling the GRNs that govern embryonic development. By applying this theoretical framework to the free swimming, feeding larval stage of the …

Emerging Hotspot Analysis Of Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Mortality (1974-2012), Crystal Ann Bass

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) is a protected species that is vulnerable to both anthropogenic and natural causes of mortality. The ability of wildlife managers to oversee regulation of this species is based on available abundance estimates and mortality data. Using existing manatee mortality data collected by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) from 1974-2012, this study focuses on identifying significant spatial clusters of high values or “hotspots” of manatee mortality and the temporal patterns of these hotspots using the novel “emerging hotspot analysis” ArcGIS tool. The categories of manatee mortality included in this analysis were …
