Synchronous Measurement Of The Normal Ground Reaction Force On Shoe Spikes And Forceplate, Zakir Hossain, Julian Grill, Wolfgang Grill, Brian Macintosh
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Monitoring balance and ground reaction forces (GRFs) during movement has obvious advantages. Sensor spikes (SS) can measure vertical GRFs while standing, walking, jogging, running, and jumping and compared with Kistler force plate. All the data from SS are derived from the time dependent voltage variations of piezo spikes, which are observed with the aid of a computer controlled transient recorder. The measurement was obtained from SS placed under the heel and forefoot. Monitoring is performed on 12 healthy subjects 29 ± 3 years of age. The force resolution is ± 0.25 N and temporal resolution is ± 0.01 ms. The …

Ergonomics And “Usability” Applied On The Training Of Muscular Force Qualities, Kostas Gianikellis, Andreas Skiadopoulos, Berta Caro
ISBS Proceedings Archive
“Usability” is introduced, for the first time, as an ergonomics criterion concerning the development and functional evaluation of the muscular force qualities training programs, based on the use of biomechanics methodology. Thus, the main purpose of the present study is to introduce ergonomics applied to the training as a method to prevent WRMSDs (Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders) that cause the high loads and efforts as well as overuse, regarding mechanical work and power. “DynaSoft 2.0” is a 3D Inverse Dynamics package that allows for the evaluation of the developed mechanical loads during the repeated series of exercises in the training of …

The Effect Of Concussion On Reaction Time And Dual Tasking Ability In A Simulated Driving Environment, Dennis Dumphy, Carlos Zerpa, Thomas Hoshizaki, Bruce Weaver, Dave Mckee, Michel Bédard, Paolo Sanzo
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of concussion on drivers’ reaction time and dual tasking ability in a simulated driving environment. Testing was performed with a STISIM Model 400 driving simulator. Participants (10 healthy and 10 two weeks to three months post-concussion) were exposed to multiple reaction time scenarios including pedestrian, vehicle, and cyclist incursions. Dual tasking ability was measured using STISIM dual task scenarios. There were longer reaction times in concussed participants (F(1, 18) = 2.072, p = .001, 2=.600) and a lower number of mean dual task passes in concussed participants (F(1, 18) = …

Markerless Motion Capture Within Sport: An Exploratory Case Study, Laurie Needham, Michael J. Long, Gareth Irwin
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this case study was to compare centre of mass (CoM) recorded by a markerless motion capture system (60 Hz) to a criterion marker based system (120 Hz). Gait kinematics of one healthy male participant was recorded five times by both capture systems simultaneously. CoM position was assessed using a full body six degrees of freedom model, normalised to the stance phase based on a 20 N vertical force threshold recorded with force plates. T-tests on RMSE indicated frontal (0.002 m) and sagittal (0.066 m) CoM coordinates were not significantly different between systems, transverse CoM (0.020 m) was …

Kinematic Analysis Of A Televised Eversion Ankle Sprain, Francesca Wade, Kam-Ming Mok, Daniel T.P. Fong
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to perform a kinematic analysis of a non-contact eversion ankle sprain case study that occurred in the National Football League (NFL). Model-based image-matching analysis was performed to quantify ankle joint kinematics for the eversion sprain. Foot orientations are reported relative to the shank segment. At foot-ground contact, the ankle joint was dorsiflexed, externally rotated but neutral in the frontal plane. Peak eversion (50°) occurred 0.2 seconds later, with a maximum velocity of 426°/s, while peak dorsiflexion (64°) occurred with a greater maximum velocity (573°/s). Rotation in the transverse plane remained constant through ground contact. …

Modeling And Optimal Control Of Able-Bodied And Unilateral Amputee Running, Anna Lena Kleesattel, Debora Clever, Johannes Funken, Wolfgang Potthast, Katja Mombaur
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The remarkable performances of amputee athletes in sprint competitions aroused media and scientific interest and led to the question whether running-specific prostheses can be an advantage with respect to able-bodied running. The aim of this study was to bring together motion capture data and Scientific Computing methods to analyze the running motions of an able-bodied and a unilateral transtibial amputee athlete. For each of them a rigid multibody system model was created. By application of optimal control techniques, the dynamics of reference running movements from motion capture data was reconstructed for both models. The able-bodied and the transtibial amputee sprinters …

Field Studies Of Cantharidin Orientation By Neopyrochroa Flabellata (Coleoptera: Pyrochroidae), Daniel K. Young
The Great Lakes Entomologist
During field studies conducted in south-central Michigan in 1977 and 1980. 109 specimens of Neopyrochroa flabellata were observed and collected at filter papers baited with cantharidin. Only the two highest concentrations used (39.2 mg. 392 j.Lg) elicited responses. and the beetles did not prefer one over the other. In the 24-h studies, most specimens were observed at the cantharidin baits between dusk and 0100 hrs (61 %; n = 14). and 0430-0630 hrs (26%; n = 6). Only two of the 109 specimens were female.

The Relationship Between North And Middle American Stenonema (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae), W. P. Mccafferty
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Stenonema integrum (McDunnough) is shown to be a junior synonym of S. mexicanum (Ulmer.) n.syn. Subspecific status is delegated to Nearctic and Neotropical populations of this species as S. m. imegrum and S, m. mexicanum, respectively. Newly studied materials from Costa Rica and Belize indicate that adults of the two subspecies may be differentiated by the presence of thoracie pleural stripes in S. m. mexicanum. Consistent differentiating lanai characteristics are not known, A Pleistocene dispersal into Middle America and subsequent vicariance is hypothesized.

Possible Colonization Strategies Of Some Carabid Beetles Inhabiting Stream Shores (Coleoptera: Carabidae), Paul M. Holeski
Possible Colonization Strategies Of Some Carabid Beetles Inhabiting Stream Shores (Coleoptera: Carabidae), Paul M. Holeski
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Certain species of insects appear to be better adapted by virtue of their particular strategy to survive disruption of the habitat than do others sharing the same area. Bembidion impotens, a carabid beetle, was especially successful in rapidly recolonizing a defaunated stream shore and in maintaining a relatively high population when the habitat was subjected to normal but severe disruption.

Prediction Of Incipient Speech In Audio/Video Conferences, Oliver Walter, Fredric Lindstrom, Ivo Creusen
Defensive Publications Series
In conference calls audio/video streams from different sources are received with varying latency. Jitter buffers are used at each receiver to align packets in time. A jitter buffer is long enough to ensure that audio is available to send to the output device, accounting for the variation in packet delay. The jitter buffer is constrained by latency requirements to be short. Jitter buffers can however still delay signals by hundreds of milliseconds, thus reducing audio conferencing quality, e.g., by causing participants to speak simultaneously.
