Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland Oct 2017

Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland

Charleston Library Conference

A recent sign of the technological transformation of scholarship is the consolidation of views about the emergence of the “digital scholar,” a variation on the influential reform minded account of faculty work associated with Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered (1990). An essential feature of this new form of academic practice and identity is named “social scholarship,” or participation in scholarly communications via the growing variety of digital networks for professional interaction. Scholars and librarians can recognize the change while acknowledging the durability of academic workflow conventions. Libraries can guide the faculty in social scholarship and be gadflies in matters of the …

Circling Centre, Finding Our Way Home: Circumambulation Pilgrimages Around Iona, Mount Tamalpais And Labyrinths, Cindy Pavlinac

Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions

Pilgrimage requires a journey. Humans are walkers, traversing the landscape seeking adventure and home. Walking pilgrimages along historic routes and concentrated journeys in a labyrinth all involve circling a centre. Places of natural grandeur have long attracted those undertaking journeys to sites of magic, prophecy, safety, hope and the supernatural. The landscape informs the journey and pilgrims notice things that can only be revealed by walking through that specific landscape. The boundaries between inner and outer landscape become blurred as the pilgrim enters an expanded relationship to the self. Walking engages the body while freeing the mind for deep contemplation …

Uneven Urban Metabolisms: Toward An Integrative (Ex)Urban Political Ecology Of Sustainability In And Around The City, Innisfree Mckinnon, Patrick T. Hurley, Colleen C. Myles, Megan Maccaroni, Trina Filan

Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Expanding cities present a sustainability challenge, as the uneven proliferation of hybrid landscape types becomes a major feature of 21st century urbanization. To fully address this challenge, scholars must consider the broad range of land uses that being produced beyond the urban core and how land use patterns in one location may be tied to patterns in other locations. Diverse threads within political ecology provide useful insights into the dynamics that produce uneven urbanization. Specifically, urban political ecology (UPE) details how economic power influences the development decision-making that proliferate urban forms, patterns of uneven access, and modes of decision-making, …

The Ubt Knowledge Center: A Collaborative Design Approach, Edmond Hajrizi, Mary M. Somerville, Anita Mirijamdotter

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations

In setting the institutional vision for University for Business and Technology in 2001, founder Dr. Edmond Hajrizi sought to educate Kosovo students to become active contributors to the society and in the workplace, within the country, the Balkans region, and beyond. The UBT Knowledge Center initiative extends the founding vision of national development through higher education. Since local knowledge, identity, and learning are necessarily situated, Kosovar students, faculty, staff, and administrators serve as topical experts and international educators from Sweden and the United States serve as design facilitators for this collaborative project. This paper presents the vision for and concept …

KIP Articles

Microorganisms that reside on and in mammals, such as bats, have the potential to influence their host’s health and to provide defenses against invading pathogens. However, we have little understanding of the skin and fur bacterial microbiota on bats, or factors that influence the structure of these communities. The southwestern United States offers excellent sites for the study of external bat bacterial microbiota due to the diversity of bat species, the variety of abiotic and biotic factors that may govern bat bacterial microbiota communities, and the lack of the newly emergent fungal disease in bats, white-nose syndrome (WNS), in the …

Pop-Up Aesop, Lacey Ellis

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

In Pop-up Aesop, I connect traditional Aesop Fables to their moral lessons uniquely through sequential illustration, typographical technique, muted colors, textured material and handcraft. Aesop Fables are usually represented by a singular illustration, if any, but the application of multiple illustrations and pop-up techniques give the morals of the stories a new opportunity to connect with the material of the books and have a more lasting and meaningful effect for the viewer.

By reading to my daughter I have been re-exposed to children’s literature. Experiencing the enjoyment a book can bring a child has inspired me to create children’s books …

Induction Of Peripheral Tolerance In Ongoing Autoimmune Inflammation Requires Interleukin 27 Signaling In Dendritic Cells, Rodolfo Thome, Jason N. Moore, Elisabeth R. Mari, Javad Rasouli Oct 2017

Induction Of Peripheral Tolerance In Ongoing Autoimmune Inflammation Requires Interleukin 27 Signaling In Dendritic Cells, Rodolfo Thome, Jason N. Moore, Elisabeth R. Mari, Javad Rasouli

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Peripheral tolerance to autoantigens is induced via suppression of self-reactive lymphocytes, stimulation of tolerogenic dendritic cells (DCs) and regulatory T (Treg) cells. Interleukin (IL)-27 induces tolerogenic DCs and Treg cells; however, it is not known whether IL-27 is important for tolerance induction. We immunized wild-type (WT) and IL-27 receptor (WSX-1) knockout mice with MOG35-55 for induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and intravenously (i.v.) injected them with MOG35-55 after onset of disease to induce i.v. tolerance. i.v. administration of MOG35-55 reduced disease severity in WT mice, but was ineffective in Wsx-/- mice. IL-27 signaling in DCs was …

Swainson's Thrushes Do Not Show Strong Wing Selectivity Prior To Crossing The Gulf Of Mexico, Rachel T. Bolus, Robert H. Diehl, Frank R. Moore, Jill L. Deppe, Michael P. Ward, Jaclyn Smolinsky, Theodore J. Zenzal Jr.

Faculty Publications

During long-distance fall migrations, nocturnally migrating Swainson’s Thrushes often stop on the northern Gulf of Mexico coast before flying across the Gulf. To minimize energetic costs, trans-Gulf migrants should stop over when they encounter crosswinds or headwinds, and depart with supportive tailwinds. However, time constrained migrants should be less selective, balancing costs of headwinds with benefits of continuing their migrations. To test the hypotheses that birds select supportive winds and that selectivity is mediated by seasonal time constraints, we examined whether local winds affected Swainson’s Thrushes’ arrival and departure at Ft. Morgan, Alabama, USA at annual, seasonal, and nightly time …

Hyperoxia Causes Mir-34a-Mediated Injury Via Angiopoietin-1 In Neonatal Lungs., Mansoor Syed, Pragnya Das, Aishwarya Pawar, Zubair H. Aghai, Anu Kaskinen, Zhen W. Zhuang, Namasivayam Ambalavanan, Gloria Pryhuber, Sture Andersson, Vineet Bhandari

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury (HALI) is a key contributor to the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in neonates, for which no specific preventive or therapeutic agent is available. Here we show that lung micro-RNA (miR)-34a levels are significantly increased in lungs of neonatal mice exposed to hyperoxia. Deletion or inhibition of miR-34a improves the pulmonary phenotype and BPD-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in BPD mouse models, which, conversely, is worsened by miR-34a overexpression. Administration of angiopoietin-1, which is one of the downstream targets of miR34a, is able to ameliorate the BPD pulmonary and PAH phenotypes. Using three independent cohorts of …

Reproductive Strategies Matter For Rare Plant Conservation: Pollination, Phenology, And Mating In An Endemic Plant Of The Sky Islands Of Arizona, Erigeron Lemmonii A. Gray (Lemmon's Fleabane) (Asteraceae), Pamela Bailey, Peter Kevan

Western North American Naturalist

Erigeron lemmonii A. Gray is extremely rare, but not endangered. There are fewer than 1000 individuals, but they compose an apparently stable, heterozygotic, diploid (2n = 18) population. The plants are perennial and endemic to one small location (about 0.5 km2) in Scheelite Canyon, Huachuca Mountains (Cochise County), Fort Huachuca Army Base, part of the Sky Island region, Arizona. Erigeron lemmonii grows from crevices in cliffs, ledges, and rock faces where it can form mats by spreading vegetatively from the roots as they proliferate, especially in microsites where soil accumulates. Our goals were to (1) investigate floral anatomy for reproductive …

Medical Therapies For Motor Symptoms In Parkinson’S Disease, Conrad Musey, Vikram Shivkumar Oct 2017

Medical Therapies For Motor Symptoms In Parkinson’S Disease, Conrad Musey, Vikram Shivkumar

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Parkinson’s Disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the aging population. It is associated with progressive loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. Parkinsonism is a clinical syndrome that consists of motor and non-motor symptoms. It has been well described that many if not all of these deficits are associated with abnormalities related to the neurotransmitter Dopamine. This review is intended for primary care physicians who often establish the diagnosis and initiate Parkinson’s treatments. One challenge faced by the primary care physician is to decide the appropriate medication and starting dose. Often medications are used at very low doses or …

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions and is now considered a chronic disease by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the West. Its impact on trauma outcomes is of particular interest with several studies presenting conflicting information. The present overview suggests a strong association between obesity and injury severity, hospital length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit (ICU) admission, pattern of injury, rate of complications and mortality. The nature of the observations may relate to an underlying physiological state of the obese patient and its associated comorbidities with a constant heightened inflammatory state aggravated by the second hit on an …
