Animal Sentience And The Precautionary Principle, Jonathan Birch Jan 2017

Animal Sentience And The Precautionary Principle, Jonathan Birch

Animal Sentience

In debates about animal sentience, the precautionary principle is often invoked. The idea is that when the evidence of sentience is inconclusive, we should “give the animal the benefit of the doubt” or “err on the side of caution” in formulating animal protection legislation. Yet there remains confusion as to whether it is appropriate to apply the precautionary principle in this context, and, if so, what “applying the precautionary principle” means in practice regarding the burden of proof for animal sentience. Here I construct a version of the precautionary principle tailored to the question of animal sentience together with a …

Cautions About Precautions, Jay R. Stauffer Jr. Jan 2017

Cautions About Precautions, Jay R. Stauffer Jr.

Animal Sentience

Assuming an animal to be sentient in the absence of conclusive evidence to the contrary is an extreme position, hence it should not and could not be the default assumption. Birch explains how the precautionary principle may be used to substantiate decisions to give the animal the benefit of doubt. Although I am reluctant to accept all of his points, Birch has provided an excellent argument for the use of the precautionary principle for the detection of animal sentience. I agree that more research is needed to refine and understand this relationship.

The Multiple Facets Of Empathy, Magdalena Boch, Claus Lamm Jan 2017

The Multiple Facets Of Empathy, Magdalena Boch, Claus Lamm

Animal Sentience

We discuss the definition of empathy provided by Kujala (2017) and argue that research in this field, in assigning the cognitive component of empathy only a secondary role, misses crucial information. Further knowledge about dogs’ ability for higher cognitive processes helps (a) in interpreting results such as potential prosocial behavior in dogs and (b) sheds light on the question of whether abilities like perspective-taking and self-other distinction are uniquely human.

Disinfection By-Products: Formation In Pool Water And The Role Of Iodinated Medical Imaging Compounds As A Potential Precursor In The Formation Of Iodo-Dbps, Christina Marie Joseph

Theses and Dissertations

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are the unintended consequence of using chemical disinfectants to kill pathogens in water. 1-11 They are formed from the reaction between disinfectants and natural organic matter (NOM), anthropogenic contaminants, and bromide/iodide present in the raw source water. DBPs are cause for concern because studies have found them to be toxic.11-16 This research focuses on identifying and studying the formation of DBPs. Specifically, the presence of DBPs in chlorinated pool water and tap water from Barcelona, Spain was studied to better understand which DBPs are formed in the pool as compared to those that enter the pool from …

Fugitive Verses & Faded Histories: Recovering The Poetry & Influence Of The British American Loyalists, Michael C. Weisenburg Jan 2017

Fugitive Verses & Faded Histories: Recovering The Poetry & Influence Of The British American Loyalists, Michael C. Weisenburg

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation traces the literary history of the British American Loyalists as they spread through the Atlantic and across the North American continent during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in order to reassess our understanding of the origins of cultural nationalism and the early literary history of the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. As a result, it implicitly argues for a reconsideration of American literature as developing in a simultaneously hemispheric and transatlantic response to British Empire. I argue that the Loyalists, through their lived experience of the war, exile, and reincorporation back into the body politic, …

The Role Of Inflammation In Atherosclerosis, Fatma Saaoud Jan 2017

The Role Of Inflammation In Atherosclerosis, Fatma Saaoud

Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerosis is both a chronic inflammatory disease and lipid deposition disorder characterized by accumulation of lipids, fibrous tissue, and inflammatory cells in the arterial wall. Thus, investigating the role of inflammation and the immune system in the progression of atherosclerosis may help in the development of novel therapeutics for atherosclerotic disease. Current atherosclerosis therapy is aimed at lipid targets and focused primarily on reducing plasma cholesterol levels. Clinical and experimental data support the critical role of inflammation in atherosclerosis and suggest that reducing inflammation even without affecting lipid levels may reduce the event rate of cardiovascular disease. Yet, no pure …

Targeting Aberrant Glycosylation In Colon And Prostate Cancer With An Improved Synthetic Lectin Array, Tanya Hundal Jan 2017

Targeting Aberrant Glycosylation In Colon And Prostate Cancer With An Improved Synthetic Lectin Array, Tanya Hundal

Theses and Dissertations

Cancers of the colon and prostate, though treatable, necessitate early detection to improve patient outcomes. Current diagnostics, (visual methods or biopsies) besides being invasive, are subjective towards interpretation, thus decreasing accuracy. Alternatively, blood-based tests involving measuring of specific biomarkers (like CEA and PSA for colon and prostate cancers, respectively) are associated with high false-positive rates and are more useful for monitoring post-treatment patient health, thus driving efforts to identify better screening and diagnostic techniques.

Abnormal glycosylation of integral membrane and secreted glycoproteins is known to take place at the onset of many diseases, including cancer, and presents as the over, …

Modulation Of Pkr Activity During Hiv Infection And Cellular Stress By Pact And Trbp, Evelyn E. Chukwurah Jan 2017

Modulation Of Pkr Activity During Hiv Infection And Cellular Stress By Pact And Trbp, Evelyn E. Chukwurah

Theses and Dissertations

A crucial component of the cellular response to stress is the attenuation of protein synthesis to allow the cell to dedicate resources for the restoration of homeostasis or towards the induction of apoptotic cell death in case the stressors overwhelm the cell. This process is itself regulated by one of the four eIF2α kinases of which PKR (Protein Kinase R) is responsible for inhibiting general translation during viral infection, oxidative stress, ER stress, heat shock or serum withdrawal.

During viral infection, PKR is transcriptionally induced by interferon but remains latent until it interacts with dsRNA. This interaction induces a conformational …

Development Of An Estrogen-Related Dietary Pattern And Lifestyle Score To Examine Breast Cancer Risk In Postmenopausal Women, Mark Andrew Guinter

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Studies examining the association between individual dietary components and breast cancer have been inconclusive. The use of dietary patterns is a holistic approach which may yield stronger associations. We sought to develop a dietary pattern based on an estrogen metabolite (EM) profile hypothesized to increase breast cancer risk (high unconjugated estradiol and low ratio of 2- to 16-hydroxylated EMs (2/16 ratio)). This estrogen-related dietary pattern (ERDP) was examined for associations with postmenopausal breast cancer in two study populations and was incorporated into an estrogen-related lifestyle score (ERLS) with other modifiable risk factors for breast cancer.

Methods: EM …

Investigation Of Iron(Ii) Autoxidation Rate And Iron Mediated Geochemical Production Of Reactive Oxygen Species At Oxic-Anoxic Interfaces, Dewamunnage Muditha Chathurangani Dias Jan 2017

Investigation Of Iron(Ii) Autoxidation Rate And Iron Mediated Geochemical Production Of Reactive Oxygen Species At Oxic-Anoxic Interfaces, Dewamunnage Muditha Chathurangani Dias

Theses and Dissertations

Biogeochemical cycles in ecosystems regulate the flow of energy between reduced species (typically carbon compounds) and a variety of oxidants via both biotic and abiotic reactions. A key class of chemical compounds that can link these cycles through abiotic pathways are Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). The production of ROS via photochemical pathways is well known. More recently, the non-photochemical production of ROS via the one electron oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe(II)) by dioxygen (O2) has been detected in a range of environments. The oxidation of Fe(II) initiates a pathway that generates an array of ROS as Fe is cycled between …

Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor M1’S Impact On Fear Extinction Learning, Joshua R. Mcelroy Jan 2017

Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor M1’S Impact On Fear Extinction Learning, Joshua R. Mcelroy

Theses and Dissertations

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that can occur following a traumatic event like combat, assault, or disaster. Individuals with PTSD are unable to extinguish fear memories which can become chronic and disabling. However, it remains unclear why some individuals exposed to a traumatic event develop PTSD while others are resilient. Acetylcholine plays a critical role in fear learning, but its role in fear extinction is less well understood. In this investigation, we used a rat model of fear extinction to determine if individual differences in extinction learning are correlated with markers of cholinergic signaling. Cholinergic markers …
