From 'Decolonized' To Reconciliation Research In Canada: Drawing From Indigenous Research Paradigms, Deborah Mcgregor

Articles & Book Chapters

When the Honorable Justice Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was asked the one message that non-Aboriginal Canadians can learn from the work of the TRC, he said “put the relationship back into balance”. Sinclair stressed that in order to achieve reconciliation and facilitate balance in the relationship we need to change the way non-Aboriginal people are educated about Aboriginal peoples. Justice Sinclair also stated that racism and colonialism are firmly embedded structurally, systemically and institutionally in Canada. This has to change. This paper will explore how the findings from the TRC can transform the theory …

Novel Mosquito Control: A Natural Approach To Reducing And Repelling Mosquito Populations, Vinita Cheepurupalli Nov 2017

Novel Mosquito Control: A Natural Approach To Reducing And Repelling Mosquito Populations, Vinita Cheepurupalli

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Mosquitoes are a major concern to human health because they serve as vectors to pass agents that cause diseases, such as malaria, the Zika virus, and the West Nile virus, which can have a multitude of harmful side effects, such as seizures, conjunctivitis, and death. The overuse of commercial mosquitocidal agents have caused mosquitoes to develop resistance and cause harm to humans and the environment. To prevent this, natural extracts could be used. The purpose of this experiment was to test various plant extracts for their effectiveness in acting as larvicides, adulticides, and repellents against Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. It was …

The Effect Of Temperature On Zinc Leaching From Rubber Tire Mulch, Elizabeth Dillon Nov 2017

The Effect Of Temperature On Zinc Leaching From Rubber Tire Mulch, Elizabeth Dillon

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Scrap tires are being recycled into many products in order to bypass slow degradation in landfills. Recycled rubber tire mulch contains zinc oxide used in tire formation that can be released through the creation of leachates. This study examines the relationship between temperature environment and leachate zinc concentration. After observing rubber mulch surface temperatures in conjunction with other factors, it was hypothesized that higher temperatures would lead to increased zinc release by rubber mulch and higher leachate zinc concentrations. Leachates were created by mixing 10 grams of mulch and 200 mL distilled water and placing in 5ºC, 29ºC, and 71ºC …

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian Nov 2017

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since Hurricane Katrina, transit evacuation service has been seen to serve critical needs in affected cities and an increasing number of hurricanes have struck the east coast where more people rely on public transportation to evacuate. Thus, it is important to model mode choice in evacuation for a better estimation of evacuation transit demand. In this study, a joint mode and destination type choice model was estimated based on multiple post-storm behavioral surveys from the northeastern seaboard to the Gulf coast. A Nested Logit model specification was used to estimate this joint choice model. The estimated model showed significant linkage …

Prevalence Of Binary Toxin Positive Clostridium Difficile In Diarrhoeal Humans In The Absence Of Epidemic Ribotype 027, Alan M. Mcgovern, Grace O. Androga, Daniel R. Knight, Mark W. Watson, Briony Elliott, Niki F. Foster, Barbara J. Chang, Thomas V. Riley

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Virulence of Clostridium difficile is primarily attributed to the large clostridial toxins A and B while the role of binary toxin (CDT) remains unclear. The prevalence of human strains of C. difficile possessing only CDT genes (A¯B¯CDT +) is generally low (< 5 %), however, this genotype is commonly found in neonatal livestock both in Australia and elsewhere. Zoonotic transmission of C. difficile has been suggested previously. Most human diagnostic tests will not detect A¯B¯CDT + strains of C. difficile because they focus on detection of toxin A and/or B. We performed a prospective investigation into the prevalence and genetic characteristics of A¯B¯CDT + C. difficile in symptomatic humans. All glutamate dehydrogenase or …

Livestock Air Emission Requirements, J. David Aiken Nov 2017

Livestock Air Emission Requirements, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Federal environmental laws require the reporting of emissions of hazardous substances beyond EPA-established minimum amounts. EPA has established a 2008 reporting exemption for livestock operations smaller than large CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations). Environmental groups challenged the EPA livestock exemption. On April 11, 2017, the D.C. federal court of appeals invalidated the livestock reporting exemption. Reporting requirements will go into effect November 15, 2017 unless the court grants EPA an additional time extension for implementing the livestock reporting program.

The Characterization Of Alpha-Carbonic Anhydrases Through Mutagenesis And Subcellular Localization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Lance E. Pounds Nov 2017

The Characterization Of Alpha-Carbonic Anhydrases Through Mutagenesis And Subcellular Localization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Lance E. Pounds

LSU Master's Theses

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are zinc metalloenzymes which catalyze the interconversion of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate. It is hypothesized that CA activity facilitates CO2 flux in leaf mesophyll cells to maintain optimal rates of photosynthesis or to maintain a pool of inorganic carbon for other metabolic processes. There are three classes of CAs (α, β, and γ) in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The βCAs and γCAs have been well studied, but the αCAs have received relatively little study. There are eight αCA genes in Arabidopsis. This study investigates which αCAs are expressed in shoots, their tissue-specific expression, their …

Volition And Action In The Human Brain: Processes, Pathologies, And Reasons, Itzhak Fried, Patrick Haggard, Biyu J. He, Aaron Schurger

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Humans seem to decide for themselves what to do, and when to do it. This distinctive capacity may emerge from an ability, shared with other animals, to make decisions for action that are related to future goals, or at least free from the constraints of immediate environmental inputs. Studying such volitional acts proves a major challenge for neuroscience. This review highlights key mechanisms in the generation of voluntary, as opposed to stimulus-driven actions, and highlights three issues. The first part focuses on the apparent spontaneity of voluntary action. The second part focuses on one of the most distinctive, but elusive, …

Identifying patterns and drivers of infectious disease dynamics across multiple scales is a fundamental challenge for modern science. There is growing awareness that it is necessary to incorporate multi-host and/or multi-parasite interactions to understand and predict current and future disease threats better, and new tools are needed to help address this task. Eco-phylogenetics (phylogenetic community ecology) provides one avenue for exploring multi-host multi-parasite systems, yet the incorporation of eco-phylogenetic concepts and methods into studies of host pathogen dynamics has lagged behind. Eco-phylogenetics is a transformative approach that uses evolutionary history to infer present-day dynamics. Here, we present an eco-phylogenetic framework …

Georgia Journal of Science

A study of the spiders occurring in three types of isolated wetlands (marshes, savannas, and swamps) in southwestern Georgia was conducted in the fall of 2005 and the spring of 2006 using 30 one meter long sweep net passes per wetland. Twenty-seven taxa from nine families of spiders were observed. Tetragnathidae and Pisauridae were the most common spider types with marsh wetlands having the greatest richness and abundance. Species found were mostly those associated with aquatic habitats; Dolomedes triton being the most abundant with an overall mean density of 1.29/m2. Patterns of spider richness and abundance were similar …

Atay V. County Of Maui, Stephanie A. George Nov 2017

Atay V. County Of Maui, Stephanie A. George

Public Land & Resources Law Review

As genetically engineered plants become more common, questions frequently arise regarding how the plants are regulated and who can regulate them. The Ninth Circuit attempted to answer these questions through preemption doctrine. The court left the door open for states and localities to regulate genetically engineered crops that have been deregulated by the federal government. This decision will implicate the future cultivation of genetically engineered crops, and the food industry as a whole.

Spasticity And Pain After Spinal Cord Injury: Relationships To Physiological, Functional, And Quality Of Life Measures, Jacqueline Anne Tibbett Nov 2017

Spasticity And Pain After Spinal Cord Injury: Relationships To Physiological, Functional, And Quality Of Life Measures, Jacqueline Anne Tibbett

Open Access Dissertations

Spasticity and chronic pain are both prevalent consequences of spinal cord injury (SCI), are commonly considered problematic, and are associated with reduced quality of life after SCI. This study investigated factors that contribute to the perceived impact of spasticity on daily life and how pain and spasticity are related. Analysis to characterize the strength of relationships between the impact of spasticity on life and physiological, environmental, and psychosocial factors can aid in identifying factors most strongly related to negative or positive impacts of spasticity. These factors may become candidates for experimental interventions aimed at reducing the problematic impact of spasticity …

Natural materials can be used to remove water contaminants by applying proper physical, chemical, and biological water treatment processes. This study involves using natural materials, as they are considered to be more environmentally benign and cost-effective than synthetic materials. This dissertation concentrates on monitoring five major water quality parameters—ammonia, fluoride, turbidity, pH, and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) —in two major applications where clean water is needed. The focus is on meeting the water quality requirements for each contaminant. The overall objective of this study is to control the levels of ammonia in aquaculture wastewater, and adjust fluoride, turbidity, pH, and …

Rethinking The Americans With Disabilities Act’S Insurance Safe Harbor, Valarie K. Blake Nov 2017

Rethinking The Americans With Disabilities Act’S Insurance Safe Harbor, Valarie K. Blake

Law Faculty Scholarship

Despite the importance of access to healthcare for the disabled, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has made little inroads in reducing disability-based discrimination by health insurers in the United States. One reason is undoubtedly the ADA’s insurance safe harbor, which explicitly permits insurers to discriminate on the basis of disability in health insurance so long as the differential treatment is supported by actuarial data and is not just intended to disadvantage the disabled. While the safe harbor’s harms are somewhat limited by the advent of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), they are not entirely neutralized. This article argues that …
