Current Status Of Pseudococcidae (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) In South Korea, Ah-Ram Son, Soo-Jung Suh

Insecta Mundi

Thirty-one species of mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) are reported from South Korea based upon monitoring surveys conducted from 2010 to 2016, along with a dichotomous key to separate them. Six species, Nipaecoccus nipae (Maskell), Palmicultor lumpurensis (Takahashi), Planococcus citri (Risso), Pseudococcus dendrobiorum Williams, Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni-Tozzetti), and Pseudococcus orchidicola Takahashi, known only to occur in greenhouses, are considered as adventive mealybug species to South Korea; of these, P. citri has already established in the exterior environment in South Korea.

Graph-Based Latent Embedding, Annotation And Representation Learning In Neural Networks For Semi-Supervised And Unsupervised Settings, Ismail Ozsel Kilinc Nov 2017

Graph-Based Latent Embedding, Annotation And Representation Learning In Neural Networks For Semi-Supervised And Unsupervised Settings, Ismail Ozsel Kilinc

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Machine learning has been immensely successful in supervised learning with outstanding examples in major industrial applications such as voice and image recognition. Following these developments, the most recent research has now begun to focus primarily on algorithms which can exploit very large sets of unlabeled examples to reduce the amount of manually labeled data required for existing models to perform well. In this dissertation, we propose graph-based latent embedding/annotation/representation learning techniques in neural networks tailored for semi-supervised and unsupervised learning problems. Specifically, we propose a novel regularization technique called Graph-based Activity Regularization (GAR) and a novel output layer modification called …

Biomechanics (Chapter 9), Nicholas Stergiou, K.-C. Siu, Sara Myers, Ben Senderling

Journal Articles

Biomechanics is a discipline. A discipline deals with understanding, predicting, and explaining phenomena within a content domain, and biomechanics is the study of the human body in motion. Kinesiology, the parent discipline of biomechanics, is a science that investigates movement. Biomechanical research in human development focuses on evaluating essential movement patterns across the human life span. Biomechanical analysis is specifically important in quantifying the developmental motor skills and movement patterns such as walking, kicking, jumping, throwing, and catching. Biomechanical research also involves studying the movement patterns of injured and disabled people. Forensic biomechanists are invited to analyze evidence, clarify some …

The Role Of Non-Profit Organizations In Shaping Food Law And Corporate Responsibility In The United States, Melissa M. Card

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This article assesses whether the United States should adopt an institutional process similar to Europe’s through giving non-profit organizations a role in shaping food law and corporate responsibility. Part I provides a comparative analysis of genetically engineered product regulations in the US and the EU. Part II explains how the institutional processes of the US and the EU led to the varying regulations. Part III asserts that the United States should change its institutional process through allowing public universities and private colleges to influence food law and corporate responsibility.

Massachusetts Urban Bicycle Preparedness, Rick L. Sheiber

Instructional Design Capstones Collection

Since 2007, Boston has made tremendous strides in shedding its designation by Bicycling Magazine as one of the “Worst Biking Cities” (Zezima, 2009, p. A12) by designating over 92 miles of bike lanes throughout the city and introducing bicycle initiatives like Boston Bikes, the Hubway bicycle sharing program. These efforts have resulted in a dramatic rise in the number of cyclists in Greater Boston and a decrease in accidents involving bicycles ((Pedroso, Angriman, Bellows & Taylor, 2016). While the quantitative research has been primarily positive, a 2017 survey initiated LivableStreets and the Longwood Area Cyclists of commuters in the Longwood …

The Influence Of Talker Expectations And Acoustic Variability On Speech Perception In Asd, Anders Hogstrom Nov 2017

The Influence Of Talker Expectations And Acoustic Variability On Speech Perception In Asd, Anders Hogstrom

Master's Theses

Speech perception is dependent upon the ability to map the sensory features of a speech signal onto the perceptual features which make up language (i.e., phonemes). A great deal of research over the past six decades has focused on how variability across talkers influences speech processing. Listeners are required to normalize the acoustic variability across talkers by continuously updating the mapping from the acoustic signal to phonetic representations. As such, processing speech from multiple talkers is cognitively more demanding than listening to a single talker. This processing cost appears to reflect, in part, the influence of listeners’ expectations that speech …

School of Psychology

Aims and Objectives To identify the factors that influence decisions made by health professionals when assessing the pain of native English speaking and children whose English is an Additional Language (EAL). Background Pain assessment in children is often poorly executed following acute injury. Whilst a range of pain assessment tools have been developed, little guidance is provided for assessing pain in EAL. Design Factorial survey design. Methods Twenty Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) nurses and twenty children’s nursing students participated in an electronic survey to make judgments on 12 scenarios describing a child attending a MIU following an incident, accompanied by …

Light From Dark: A Relictual Troglobite Reveals A Broader Ancestral Distribution For Kimulid Harvestmen (Opiliones: Laniatores: Kimulidae) In South America, Abel Pérez-González, F. Sara Ceccarelli, Bruno G. O. Monte Nov 2017

Light From Dark: A Relictual Troglobite Reveals A Broader Ancestral Distribution For Kimulid Harvestmen (Opiliones: Laniatores: Kimulidae) In South America, Abel Pérez-González, F. Sara Ceccarelli, Bruno G. O. Monte

KIP Articles

A new troglobitic harvestman, Relictopiolus galadriel gen. nov et sp. nov., is described from Olhos d’Água cave, Itacarambi, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Morphological characters, including male genitalia and exomorphology, suggest that this species belongs to the family Kimulidae, and it appears to share the greatest similarities with Tegipiolus pachypus. Bayesian inference analyses of a molecular dataset strongly support the inclusion of this species in Kimulidae and confirm the hypothesized sister-group relationship between R. galadriel and T. pachypus. A time calibrated phylogeny indicates that these sister-taxa diverged from a common ancestor approximately 40 Mya, during the Paleogene. The current range of …

Discovery Of A Rich Gene Pool Of Bat Sars-Related Coronaviruses Provides New Insights Into The Origin Of Sars Coronavirus, Ben Hu, Lei-Ping Zeng, Xing-Lou Yang Nov 2017

Discovery Of A Rich Gene Pool Of Bat Sars-Related Coronaviruses Provides New Insights Into The Origin Of Sars Coronavirus, Ben Hu, Lei-Ping Zeng, Xing-Lou Yang

KIP Articles

A large number of SARS-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoV) have been detected in horseshoe bats since 2005 in different areas of China. However, these bat SARSr-CoVs show sequence differences from SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in different genes (S, ORF8, ORF3, etc) and are considered unlikely to represent the direct progenitor of SARS-CoV. Herein, we report the findings of our 5-year surveillance of SARSr-CoVs in a cave inhabited by multiple species of horseshoe bats in Yunnan Province, China. The full-length genomes of 11 newly discovered SARSr-CoV strains, together with our previous findings, reveals that the SARSr-CoVs circulating in this single location are highly diverse …

North–South: Poland And Brazil In Turmoil, Ladislau Dowbor Nov 2017

North–South: Poland And Brazil In Turmoil, Ladislau Dowbor

European Management Studies

Brazil and Poland are the countries presented as having best sailed through the 2008 global crisis. Clearly anti-cyclical policies work: instead of austerity measures, both countries maintained strong public investment, decentralized social policies and vigorous access to credit. More recently, however, our countries are facing the strong winds of financial globalization, with growing restrictions to the capacity of maintaining national economic policies. Comparing two very different countries is certainly challenging, but it does shed light on how the present global economic background affects us all. More recently, the economic and social progress in both countries has been suffering political disruption, …

The European Union’S Trade Relations With Brazil In 2004–2015, Monika Wojtas, Tomasz Białowąs

European Management Studies

Brazil’s trade with the EU has been increasing, reflecting the growing role of Brazil in the world economy in 2004–2008. However, since the global economic crisis the growth rates have slowed down and bilateral trade flows have been declining. During 2004–2015, the EU trade balance with Brazil was mostly deficit and trade patterns were similar to each partner’s general merchandise structure. The paper contains an analysis of EU-Brazil trade flows and balance as well as points to main factors contributing to trade development. Apart from economic conditions in the EU and Brazil, main factors affecting bilateral trade were: world prices …

Mudstones And Embedded Concretions Show Differences In Lithology-Related, But Not Source-Related Biomarker Distributions, Sk Lengger, Im Melendez, Re Summons, K Grice Nov 2017

Mudstones And Embedded Concretions Show Differences In Lithology-Related, But Not Source-Related Biomarker Distributions, Sk Lengger, Im Melendez, Re Summons, K Grice

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The mudstones of the Western Australian Gogo Formation harbour numerous carbonate concretions which often contain preserved fossils of Lagerstätte-like quality. These are especially notable in places where the mudstone has eroded, giving way to nodule fields, which afford valuable paleobiological records. It is, however, a challenge to determine their paleoenvironmental context. Here, we analysed concretions from a core drilled in the Canning Basin Gogo Formation. At two different depths, concretions were compared to the surrounding mudstone found at the same depth. Electron microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy showed that the concretions were carbonate-rich and contained detrital fragments. Biomarker data showed that …

Comparative Aspects Of Mating Behavior Patterns In Six Species Of Stink Bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), Lee C. Drickamer, J. E. Mcpherson Nov 2017

Comparative Aspects Of Mating Behavior Patterns In Six Species Of Stink Bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), Lee C. Drickamer, J. E. Mcpherson

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Mating sequences were analyzed for six species of stink bugs using video- tapes. The results consisted of qualitative descriptions of the precopulatory activities of the pairs and quantitative analyses of the number and direction of mating sequences, including the latency to and duration of copulatory lock. It was possible to quantitatively characterize each of the six species tested. In addition, certain infrequent behavior patterns, e.g., head butts, were observed for some species and not others. The results extend the previous information on mating activities in stink bugs, particularly for Euschistus. We interpret our findings with regard to reproductive strategies …
