Epigeal And Flight Activity Of Coleoptera In A Commercial Raspberry Plantation And Adjacent Sites In Southern Quebec (Canada): Introduction And Nitidulidae, Claire Levesque, Gilles-Yvon Levesque

The Great Lakes Entomologist

We studied the epigeal and flight activity of Coleoptera in a commercial raspberry plantation and adjacent sites in southern Quebec, from 1987-1989. In this first paper, we present the results for the Nitidulidae. Pitfall traps yielded 521 beetles representing 15 species; Glischrochilus quadrisignatus represented 86% of catches in raspberry rows (old and young plants), and Epuraea spp. were the most abundant nitidulids in a woods-field boundary and in a pine woods. Nitidulids in flight interception traps comprised 2179 individuals of 28 species; Meligethes nigrescens was the most abundant species in open sites around the raspberry plantation, while Epuraea avara and …

Factors Influencing Oviposition In Aedes Triseriatus (Diptera: Culicidae), Jeffrey Beehler, Sharon Lohr, Gene Defoliart

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Five factors associated with natural oviposition sites were tested for their attractancy to ovipositing Aedes triseriatus, including dyed oviposition water, presence of decaying organic matter, a dark oviposition container, water in which conspecific larvae have been reared to the 4th instar and the presence of eggs on the balsa wood oviposition substrate. A replicated fractional factorial design was used to examine the effects of the above factors on oviposition behavior in laboratory experiments. Regression analysis showed dyed oviposition water and eggs on the oviposition substrate to be statistically significant attractants for ovipositing A. triseriatus females. The attraction to dyed …

An illustrated key to larvae and notes on the biology of container-breeding mosquitoes of Michigan are presented. Two species included in the key. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. are not endemic in Michigan, but occasional introductions could occur with commercial shipments of scrap tires or other containers.

Between Nodes And Edges: Possibilities And Limits Of Network Analysis In Art History, Miriam Kienle Nov 2017

Between Nodes And Edges: Possibilities And Limits Of Network Analysis In Art History, Miriam Kienle

Artl@s Bulletin

This article examines a number of prominent network analysis projects in the field of art history and explores the unique promises and problems that this increasingly significant mode of analysis presents to the discipline. By bringing together projects that conceptualize art historical networks in different ways, it demonstrates how established theories and methods of art history—such as feminist and postcolonial theory—may be productively used in conjunction with quantitative/computational approaches to art historical analysis. It argues that quantitative analysis of art and its networks can expand the qualitative approaches that have traditionally defined the field, particularly if theorizing is not positioned …

Invasive Coqui Frogs Are Associated With Greater Abundances Of Nonnative Birds In Hawaii, Usa, Robyn L. Smith, Karen H. Beard, David N. Koons

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The global spread of invasive species has created significant challenges for avian conservation. Introduced predators and pathogens have long been recognized for their direct negative effects on birds, but introduced amphibians can reach high densities on islands with no native amphibians, where they interact with native species. The coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui), introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in the late 1980s, could have significant impacts on birds because it is fully terrestrial and achieves high densities. Coquis have been hypothesized to compete with native birds for invertebrate prey, but could also serve as a novel food resource for birds that …

I See Molasses, Elise Teichert Nov 2017

I See Molasses, Elise Teichert

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

It was the first morning of spring and there were a bunch of moles that were getting ready for the spring, and they were lined up in the hole to come up to the ground. The first one sticks his head out of the hole and the bottom two yell to the top one, “What can you see?” And the first mole yells back down, “I see green hills and flowers, and a blue sky.” The second one sticks his nose up and the bottom one asks, “What do you smell?” And he says, “I smell clean air and fresh …

Whenever I go food shopping, which is once in a blue moon, at which time I head directly to the beer aisle so I can buy a six-pack of Blue Moon, I accompany my wife, Sue, who clips coupons, knows what's on sale and always carries a circular. This baffles me because circulars are rectangular, which is the admittedly feeble excuse I use for rarely going to the supermarket.

BACKGROUND: While age and the APOE ε4 allele are major risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD), a small percentage of individuals with these risk factors exhibit AD resilience by living well beyond 75 years of age without any clinical symptoms of cognitive decline.

METHODS: We used over 200 "AD resilient" individuals and an innovative, pedigree-based approach to identify genetic variants that segregate with AD resilience. First, we performed linkage analyses in pedigrees with resilient individuals and a statistical excess of AD deaths. Second, we used whole genome sequences to identify candidate SNPs in significant linkage regions. Third, we replicated SNPs …

Binge Alcohol Exposure Transiently Changes The Endocannabinoid System: A Potential Target To Prevent Alcohol-Induced Neurodegeneration, Daniel J. Liput, James R. Pauly, Audra L. Stinchcomb, Kimberly Nixon Nov 2017

Binge Alcohol Exposure Transiently Changes The Endocannabinoid System: A Potential Target To Prevent Alcohol-Induced Neurodegeneration, Daniel J. Liput, James R. Pauly, Audra L. Stinchcomb, Kimberly Nixon

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Excessive alcohol consumption leads to neurodegeneration, which contributes to cognitive decline that is associated with alcohol use disorders (AUDs). The endocannabinoid system has been implicated in the development of AUDs, but little is known about how the neurotoxic effects of alcohol impact the endocannabinoid system. Therefore, the current study investigated the effects of neurotoxic, binge-like alcohol exposure on components of the endocannabinoid system and related N-acylethanolamines (NAEs), and then evaluated the efficacy of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibition on attenuating alcohol-induced neurodegeneration. Male rats were administered alcohol according to a binge model, which resulted in a transient decrease in …

Hannibal And Scipio's War: The Second Punic War, Michael J. Elmore Nov 2017

Hannibal And Scipio's War: The Second Punic War, Michael J. Elmore

Honors College Theses

The Second Punic War (218-201 BC), setting Rome against its rival state Carthage, is remembered because of the strategic maneuverings between Hannibal of Carthage and Scipio of Rome which would determine the master of the Mediterranean, laying the ground works for eventual plans for empire. Rome would eventually beat Carthage and historians since antiquity have tried to understand how Rome did so. Nigel Bagnall, in his book on the second Punic war describes the war in its entirety, making it a good overview. Polybius, a source written during the time of the Third Punic War, is one of the main …

Moving Toward A Collective Impact Effort: The Volunteer Program Assessment, Sheridan Trent, Kelly Prange, Joseph A. Allen

Psychology Faculty Publications

Volunteers are essential to the operation of many nonprofits, but some experience challenges in retaining their volunteer workforce. The Volunteer Program Assessment (VPA) seeks to address this issue by helping organizations to identify strengths, growth areas, and recommendations for improving volunteer experiences. To maximize the effectiveness of VPA’s mission, the organization is moving toward a collective impact (CI) approach. Although not developed as a CI effort, the program currently exemplifies many of its characteristics, which have been instrumental in expanding reach to more organizations. We examine VPA’s alignment with collective impact and outline how VPA will continue to improve efforts.

Limb remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is an effective means of protection against ischemia/reperfusion (IR)-induced injury to multiple organs. Many studies are focused on identifying endocrine mechanisms that underlie the cross-talk between muscle and RIPC-mediated organ protection. We report that RIPC releases irisin, a myokine derived from the extracellular portion of fibronectin domain-containing 5 protein (FNDC5) in skeletal muscle, to protect against injury to the lung. Human patients with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome show reduced concentrations of irisin in the serum and increased irisin concentrations in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, suggesting transfer of irisin from circulation to the lung under physiologic …

The Effects Of Overfeeding On Body Composition: The Role Of Macronutrient Composition - A Narrative Review, Alex Leaf, Jose Antonio Nov 2017

The Effects Of Overfeeding On Body Composition: The Role Of Macronutrient Composition - A Narrative Review, Alex Leaf, Jose Antonio

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(8): 1275-1296, 2017. Compared to investigations on hypocaloric diets, the effects of chronic overfeeding have been less studied. It has been posited that consuming calories in excess of daily caloric requirements will result in a gain in body weight and in particular fat mass regardless of which macronutrient(s) are consumed. However, recent evidence suggests that there is a quantitative difference in protein versus carbohydrate and/or fat overfeeding as it relates to body composition. Protein overfeeding or the consumption of a high protein diet may not result in a gain in body weight or fat mass …
