Bohemians: Greenwich Village And The Masses, Joanna Levin
Bohemians: Greenwich Village And The Masses, Joanna Levin
English Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"This chapter traces the convergence of 'the revolt against puritanism' and 'the revolt against capitalism' in the 1910s, focusing on the most celebrated American bohemia Greenwich Village - and on The Masses, the Village periodical that provided the most influential expression of the double-edged bohemian revolt. The effort to combine the personal and the political, the artistic and the social helped fuel a host of interconnected movements and alliances within the bohemian milieu, and the bohemians called upon both Marx and Freud in the effort to promote revolutionary change. Often riddled with internal contradictions and susceptible to forces of …

Personhood Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Vincent J. Samar
Personhood Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Vincent J. Samar
Marquette Law Review
This Article examines recent claims that the fetus be afforded the status of a person under the Fourteenth Amendment. It shows that such claims do not carry the necessary objectivity to operate reasonably in a pluralistic society. It then goes on to afford what a better view of personhood that could so operate might actually look like. Along the way, this Article takes seriously the real deep concerns many have for the sanctity of human life. By the end, it attempts to find a balance for those concerns with the view of personhood offered that should engage current debates about …

Fall Field Report, August - November 2017, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
This fall season will be remembered as the fall with the mega-rarities. There were five, one of which, Pacific Wren, is a first Nebraska record. Based on occurrence dates, Hurricane Irma appears to have influenced the appearance of two of the megas, Black Vulture and Magnificent Frigatebird, neither of which provided opportunities for observers to view them, but both well-documented with photographs. There were an extraordinary TWO sightings of Harris’s Hawk, which together with the presence as of this writing (December 19) of one in northeast Kansas and a view of the species map in eBird strongly suggest a single …

Nebraska Bird Review
The 2017 NOU Fall Field Days took place in and around Ogallala on Sept. 15 - 17 with 55 in attendance. The weather on Friday was hot and windy, making finding birds a challenge. Overnight a cold front came through causing birders to shiver on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but the payoff was easier birding and some interesting species. Field trips were led by William Flack, Clem Klaphake, Wayne Mollhoff, Don Paseka, Ross Silcock and T. J. Walker. Locations included Cedar Point Biological Station, Lake Ogallala SRA, various beaches along the shore of Lake McConaughy SRA, Ash Hollow State Historical …

Avian Diversity, Abundance, And Nest Success Among Managed Prairies And Agricultural Plots In Oklahoma And Texas, Phillip J. Leonard, Douglas R. Wood, Wayne E. Meyer
The Prairie Naturalist
Over the last 50 years, grassland birds experienced rapid declines due to habitat loss and degradation as a result of agricultural practices. Our objective was to document the diversity, abundance, and nest success of bird communities using managed prairie and agricultural plots at the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in southern Oklahoma and Hagerman NWR in northern Texas. From April 1 to July 15, 2013–2014, point count surveys, nest searches, nest monitoring, and vegetation sampling were conducted among three habitat treatments: managed prairie, unharvested wheat, and fallow agricultural plots. Species richness values for potential nesting species were higher in managed …
Severe Drought Impacts Female Pheasant Physiology In Southwest Nebraska, Jessica A. Laskowski, Gwen C. Bachman, Joseph J. Fontaine
Severe Drought Impacts Female Pheasant Physiology In Southwest Nebraska, Jessica A. Laskowski, Gwen C. Bachman, Joseph J. Fontaine
The Prairie Naturalist
In 2012, Nebraska experienced one of the worst droughts since the 1930s, accompanied by abnormally high temperatures. We studied the impacts of the 2012 summer drought on female ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) body condition and baseline and stress-induced corticosterone concentrations (CORT). We hypothesized that drought conditions would reduce pheasant body condition, increase chronic stress resulting in elevated baseline CORT levels, and down-regulate pheasant stress response to acute stressors, resulting in reduced stress-induced CORT concentrations. In southwestern Nebraska, we captured female pheasants in 2012 (pre-drought) and 2013 (post-drought). Pheasants had poorer body condition after the drought. Although female CORT measures were …

Field Discrimination Of Prairie Deer Mice And White-Footed Mice Using Morphological Characteristics, Jacob L. Berl, Kelton M. Verble, Elizabeth A. Flaherty, Robert K.S. Swihart
The Prairie Naturalist
Field discrimination of prairie deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) and white-footed mice (P. leucopus noveboracensis) can be difficult throughout much of the central United States where they co-occur. We live-trapped prairie deer mice and white-footed mice within forested and row-crop habitats in central Indiana and used multiplex PCR with species-specific primers to positively determine species identification. We collected a suite of commonly measured external morphological traits (body weight and lengths of ear, hindfoot, tail, and body) from each captured animal. Individuals were assigned to species based on analysis of DNA; discriminant function analysis was used to …
The Welchadf Package For Robust Hypothesis Testing In Unbalanced Multivariate Mixed Models With Heteroscedastic And Non-Normal Data, Pablo J. Villacorta
The Welchadf Package For Robust Hypothesis Testing In Unbalanced Multivariate Mixed Models With Heteroscedastic And Non-Normal Data, Pablo J. Villacorta
The R Journal
A new R package is presented for dealing with non-normality and variance heterogeneity of sample data when conducting hypothesis tests of main effects and interactions in mixed models. The proposal departs from an existing SAS program which implements Johansen’s general formulation of Welch-James’s statistic with approximate degrees of freedom, which makes it suitable for testing any linear hypothesis concerning cell means in univariate and multivariate mixed model designs when the data pose non-normality and non-homogeneous variance. Improved type I error rate control is obtained using bootstrapping for calculating an empirical critical value, whereas robustness against non-normality is achieved through trimmed …
A Tidy Data Model For Natural Language Processing Using Cleannlp, Taylor Arnold
A Tidy Data Model For Natural Language Processing Using Cleannlp, Taylor Arnold
The R Journal
Recent advances in natural language processing have produced libraries that extract low level features from a collection of raw texts. These features, known as annotations, are usually stored internally in hierarchical, tree-based data structures. This paper proposes a data model to represent annotations as a collection of normalized relational data tables optimized for exploratory data analysis and predictive modeling. The R package cleanNLP, which calls one of two state of the art NLP libraries (CoreNLP or spaCy), is presented as an implementation of this data model. It takes raw text as an input and returns a list of normalized …

The R Journal
Count data can be analyzed using generalized linear mixed models when observations are correlated in ways that require random effects. However, count data are often zero-inflated, containing more zeros than would be expected from the typical error distributions. We present a new package, glmmTMB, and compare it to other R packages that fit zero-inflated mixed models. The glmmTMB package fits many types of GLMMs and extensions, including models with continuously distributed responses, but here we focus on count responses. glmmTMB is faster than glmmADMB, MCMCglmm, and brms, and more flexible than INLA and mgcv for zero-inflated …
Jittery Gauges: Combating The Polarizing Effect Of Political Data Visualizations Through Uncertainty, Bethany Blaire Hardy
Jittery Gauges: Combating The Polarizing Effect Of Political Data Visualizations Through Uncertainty, Bethany Blaire Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
Since the late 1800s, public data visualizations displaying election forecasts and results—such as the red and blue map of the United State—have presented an irreparably divided country. However, on November 8, 2016, the New York Times published a data visualization on their live presidential forecast page that broke over a century of visual expectations, inspiring many to tweet reactions to what popular media has dubbed the "jittery gauges." Not surprisingly, the tweets about this unique and difficult-to-interpret display were mostly negative. This paper argues, though, that the negative feedback indicates that the gauges, while imperfect, represent an important step away …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast-growing technological trend, which is expected to revolutionize the world by changing the way we do things. IoT is a concept that encourages all the electronic devices to connect to the internet and interact with each other. By connecting all these devices to the internet, new markets can be created, productivity can be improved, operating costs can be reduced and many other benefits can be obtained. In IoT architecture, often sensors and aggregators collect data and send to a cloud server for analyzing via the traditional cloud-server model. This client-server architecture is not adequate …

Changes In Functional Neural Network Organization During Working Memory Task Performance: Effects Of Age And Task Practice, Thang Manh Le
Changes In Functional Neural Network Organization During Working Memory Task Performance: Effects Of Age And Task Practice, Thang Manh Le
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The notion that cognitive processing is not only reflected by regional changes in neural activity in the brain but also by global changes in functional connectivity pattern has greatly motivated the network approach in examining the neural substrates of cognition and their relationship with behavior. Recent human neuroimaging evidence suggests specific cognitive processes may involve distinct spatiotemporal patterns of functional connectivity across task conditions. For instance, increased cognitive demand has been shown to evoke greater network integration while changes in functional network architecture have been associated with shifting between cognitive states. However, little is known about individual differences in the …

Nitrogen fi xation by the Haber–Bosch process has more than doubled the amount of fi xed N on Earth, significantly influencing the global N cycle. Much of this fi xed N is made into N fertilizer that is used to produce nearly half of the world’s food. Too much of the N fertilizer pollutes air and water when it is lost from agroecosystems through volatilization, denitrification, leaching, and runoff. Most of the N fertilizer used in the United States is applied to corn (Zea mays L.), and the profitability and environmental footprint of corn production is directly tied to N …
Electrophysiological Analysis Assessing The Analgesic Nature Of The Lateral Habenula (Lhb), Akshay Sunil Parchure
Electrophysiological Analysis Assessing The Analgesic Nature Of The Lateral Habenula (Lhb), Akshay Sunil Parchure
Psychology Theses - Archive
Local field potential (LFP) is a collective neural signal of all the synaptic activity occurring at a specific area of the brain, thereby offering a unique insight into how the brain functions. The habenula is involved in the pain pathway and decision-making. Located above the thalamus, it has been proposed to function with nucleus accumbens and periacqueductal gray (PAG) along with other regions in a descending pain modulation pathway. The main purpose of the present study was to determine the contribution of LHb to the nociceptive input and the effect of activation on antinociception. One week after implantation of electrode …

Wangari Maathai The Educator: Straddling Tradition And Modernity, Namulundah Florence
Journal of Global Education and Research
Wangari Muta Mary Jo Maathai’s (April 1, 1940 – September 25, 2011) public image highlights her nationality, her education both in and outside Kenya, her establishment of the Green Belt Movement (GBM) for which she received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, and her political activism. Advocates for female empowerment take solace in success stories like Maathai’s rise from a village girl to become a global icon of leadership. Yet, her mobility was more circumstantial than it was deliberate, and is inseparable from the uneasy compromise between the traditional gender roles of her youth with the critical consciousness nurtured in …
Development Of Qualitative And Quantitative Applications In Energy Industry Using Gas Chromatography- Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy, Ling Bai
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Characterization and evaluation of hydrocarbon assets, including content of linear and branched alkanes, cycloalkanes, aromatics, olefins, and naphthenes, among others, during production and distribution are very crucial in oil and gas industries. Quantification and qualification of bulk composition of hydrocarbon groups in complex samples like gasoline, diesel, and other high value refinery products is very challenging. Gas chromatography (GC) is the most popular technique among the petrochemical industry and many of the EPA and ASTM methods have been established based on GC for analyzing hydrocarbons in complex mixtures. Though there are many methods available, there are still limitations on the …
Microhabitat Influences Morphospecies Richness On Costa Rican Rocky Reefs, December 2017, Brooke Hawkins, Eric Medina
Microhabitat Influences Morphospecies Richness On Costa Rican Rocky Reefs, December 2017, Brooke Hawkins, Eric Medina
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Microhabitat can be important in understanding small-scale habitat use of marine populations. This study examines the role of microhabitat, defined as a combination of substrate feature, as well as spatial heterogeneity on the biodiversity of rocky reefs off the coast of Cuajiniquil, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We surveyed twenty quadrats from three sites, recording the benthic animal morphospecies we observed, the microhabitats they occupied, and measured physical attributes of each habitat. We found that stony caves harbor more morphospecies in a given area than other microhabitats, but that rocky flats and stony pools host more unique morphospecies in total. We also …
The Effects Of Reforestation On Mammal Diversity And Abundance In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2017, Noelle Pruett
The Effects Of Reforestation On Mammal Diversity And Abundance In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2017, Noelle Pruett
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Reforestation is an important mechanism in helping previously deforested landscapes recover. However, reforested areas tend to have less diversity in vegetation, due to the fact that humans are not able to replicate the same diversity or pattern of regeneration that would occur naturally. I investigated whether or not these changes in forest types and vegetation affect the diversity and abundance of mammals that inhabit these areas. I used both camera traps and Sherman traps to survey mammals from areas with reforestation and with natural regeneration. I observed a total of 72 mammals from five species in the camera traps. I …
Relating Wing Loading And Ear Size To Bat Diet Types, December 2017, Shilah Mcguinness
Relating Wing Loading And Ear Size To Bat Diet Types, December 2017, Shilah Mcguinness
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Bats have one of the widest diet varieties in the animal kingdom. With these varying diet niches, each bat species experiences a different set of evolutionary pressures from its ecological interactions. This study assessed the variation in wing and ear morphology in bats and how these values compare with their varying diet types, in order to assess the ecological specificity that these species have evolved. I set up mist nets over a series of two weeks and captured a total of 17 bats from 9 species, conducting a series of measurements to calculate the total wing area and ear/weight ratio …
Synchronized Male Cricket Calls In Choruses Of The Cricket Anaxipha Sp., December 2017, Michael Morales
Synchronized Male Cricket Calls In Choruses Of The Cricket Anaxipha Sp., December 2017, Michael Morales
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
In Monteverde, there is a species of cricket within the Genus Anaxipha where males sing in loud choruses at night. I wanted to explore the purpose of this behavior by looking at the call and response activity between individual males. In this experiment, I looked at male responses to manipulations of the species male song, which is composed of two elements. I conducted a series of playback experiments on captive crickets. Responses of test subjects were documented while presenting playbacks of manipulated songs. Each playback treatment had a unique response from the crickets being tested. However, overall, it appears that …

Possible Effects Of Long-Term Weather Changes And Extreme Weather Events On Mice Population Abundances In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2017, Emily S. Parker
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Mice and rat abundance is determined by a multitude of factors, including, but not limited to: climate change, predation, and food availability. In this study, I analyzed the effects of daily and long-term weather on rodent populations to understand a possible decrease in abundance from 2016 to 2017 in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. I took observations of individuals from four different sites: Santa Elena, Bajo del Tigre, Dwight and Rachel Crandell Memorial Reserve, and the Estación Biológica Monteverde. While a considerable number of specimens were captured in Bajo del Tigre, I observed the total abundance of rodents to be significantly …
