Gendered Ecologies And Black Feminist Futures In Ibi Zoboi’S “The Farming Of Gods,” Wanuri Kahiu’S Pumzi, And Wangechi Mutu’S The End Of Eating Everything, Amanda Renee Rico
Gendered Ecologies And Black Feminist Futures In Ibi Zoboi’S “The Farming Of Gods,” Wanuri Kahiu’S Pumzi, And Wangechi Mutu’S The End Of Eating Everything, Amanda Renee Rico
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This paper addresses how the works of three female authors and artists from various parts of Africa and the Diaspora — Pumzi by Wanuri Kahiu, The End of eating Everything by Wangechi Mutu, and “The Farming of the Gods” by Ibi Zoboi — imagine a black feminist future through ecological imagery. My argument is twofold: first, I take my cue from Mutu’s assertion that imaginative forms of world-building must connect systemic corruption to consumptive practices. Second, I claim such Afrofuturist works use geographical spaces marked by ecological abuse (poisonous spores, pustules, desert landscapes), displacement (discarded objects) and violence (human limbs) …

Use Of Multimedia In The Teaching And Learning Of Poetry In English In A Public Secondary, School In Migori County, Kenya: An Action Research, Monica A. Odhiambo
Master of Education
The modern technological innovations are reshaping the educational landscape, influencing the pedagogical practices in today’s classrooms. In the 21st century, it is irrelevant to insist on conventional methods of teaching, which perpetuate teacher-centered pedagogy and use of print-based materials as the primary resources to facilitate the teaching and learning process. Consequently, teachers are rethinking the way they should teach vis-a-vis the way their students should learn. Multimedia has become one of the popular technological tools used to improve the teaching and learning process. The use of multimedia presentations offer students differentiated avenues to access curriculum content in their own preferred …

Seeing Prehistory Through New Lenses: Using Geophysical And Statistical Analysis To Identify Fresh Perspectives Of A 15th Century Mandan Occupation, Amber Marie Mitchum
Seeing Prehistory Through New Lenses: Using Geophysical And Statistical Analysis To Identify Fresh Perspectives Of A 15th Century Mandan Occupation, Amber Marie Mitchum
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Great Plains prehistoric research has evolved over the course of a century, with many sites like Huff Village (32MO11) in North Dakota recently coming back to the forefront of discussion through new technological applications. Through a majority of its studies and excavations, Huff Village appeared to endure as the final stage in the Middle Missouri tradition. Long thought to reflect only systematically placed long-rectangular structure types of its Middle Missouri predecessors, recent magnetic gradiometry and topographic mapping data revealed circular structure types that deviated from long-held traditions, highlighting new associations with Coalescent groups. A compact system for food capacity was …
Endocrine Disrupting Effects Of Halogenated Chemicals On Fish, Amy Elizabeth Godfrey
Endocrine Disrupting Effects Of Halogenated Chemicals On Fish, Amy Elizabeth Godfrey
Open Access Dissertations
Halogenated chemicals are commonly used in a variety of everyday products such as cookware, electronics, furniture and baby products. Some of these chemicals have been found to negatively affect development and endocrine disruption. Therefore, there is a need for the development of next generation replacements that are less toxic; however, more studies need to be conducted to ensure their safety. The main objective of this dissertation was to assess the endocrine disrupting potential of halogenated and next generation chemicals, singly and in mixtures, in fish. We tested three well studied halogens, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) and tetrabromobisphenal …
Project-Oriented Safety Management Of Rural Local Roads, Thomas Hall
Project-Oriented Safety Management Of Rural Local Roads, Thomas Hall
Open Access Dissertations
Although rural areas make up 19% of the U.S. population and have 30% of the annual vehicle miles traveled (VMT), more than half of the annual U.S. traffic fatalities (in excess of 15,000) occur in rural areas. For higher-volume rural state roads with a considerable crash history, the effect of road geometry, infrastructure, traffic, and roadside features on crashes has been studied extensively. However, more than 80% of rural roads in Indiana and other heavily agricultural states are local roads. Rural local roads have lower crash frequencies than rural state roads, but greater crash rates (when adjusted for VMT). Rural …
Skeletal Biomechanics And Response To Mechanical Load: A Comparative Approach In The Mouse And Chukar Partridge, Kari A. Verner
Skeletal Biomechanics And Response To Mechanical Load: A Comparative Approach In The Mouse And Chukar Partridge, Kari A. Verner
Open Access Dissertations
Dynamic mechanical loading plays an important role in regulating bone geometry and strength. A healthy skeleton adapts to the bone tissue strain profile and magnitude of loads it experiences on a daily basis in order to maintain reasonable safety factors. In skeletal diseases, such as osteoporosis, a bone’s ability to adapt and maintain structural integrity in response to increased mechanical strains is apparently impaired, which allows skeletal resorption to progress unabated and could eventually lead to mechanical failure. In order to develop better treatments for bone wasting diseases, it is important to understand the mechanobiology of how the healthy skeleton …
Electrophysiological, Behavioral, And Histological Assessment Of The Thalamocortical Network As A Stimulation Target For Central Auditory Neuroprostheses, Ryan Scott Verner
Electrophysiological, Behavioral, And Histological Assessment Of The Thalamocortical Network As A Stimulation Target For Central Auditory Neuroprostheses, Ryan Scott Verner
Open Access Dissertations
Brain-machine interfaces aim to restore natural sensation or locomotion to individuals who have lost such ability. While the field of neuroprostheses has developed some flagship technologies which have enjoyed great clinical success, such as the cochlear implant, it is generally understood that no single device will be ideal for all patients. For example, the cochlear implant is unable to help patients suffering from neurofibromatosis type 2, which is commonly characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas for which surgical removal requires transection of the auditory nerve. In an effort to develop stimulatory neuroprostheses which can help the maximum number of patients, research …
A Manifestation Of Chinese Tourists: Chinese Values And Touristic Behavior, Yunzi Zhang
A Manifestation Of Chinese Tourists: Chinese Values And Touristic Behavior, Yunzi Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
The rapid growth of China’s outbound tourism market has greatly contributed to today’s global economy. While destinations benefit economically from the activities of Chinese tourists, some public behaviors of this segment of the market have been criticized as disruptive to destinations’ social orders and are considered unexpected and annoying. The disapproval of these behaviors deserves scholarly attention as it essentially implies a socio-cultural disagreement on the appropriateness of public conduct. Applying a mixed method approach, this study first provides a theoretical portrayal of the Chinese tourist through the synthesis of classic Chinese scholars’ works. It then examines U.S. residents’ opinions …
An Ethnohistorical Study Of The Dowagiac Chieftains, Kathryn A. Bishop
An Ethnohistorical Study Of The Dowagiac Chieftains, Kathryn A. Bishop
Masters Theses
This research uses ethnohistorical methods to examine the use of imagery appropriated from American Indian cultures by the Dowagiac Union Schools. High School yearbooks from 1899- 2014, along with other artifacts, were identified as sources of information to describe students’ experiences. Applying Brayboy’s (2005) Tribal Critical Race Theory, an off-shoot of Critical Race Theory, combined with the research of historical and theoretical scholars like Davis (2002), Pewewardy (2001), and Deloria, King, and Springwood (2001), a case is made for the removal of American Indian mascots used by educational institutions, including the Dowagiac Chieftains. Though over 1,750 occasions of American Indian-appropriated …

Understanding Cigarette Butt Littering Behavior On A Public Beach: A Case Study Of Jekyll Island, Maranda R. Miller, Mark E. Burbach
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
Conservation of natural resources and promotion of family-friendly tourism activities are vital to Jekyll Island. As it is stated in the Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) Master Plan “Jekyll Island is a unique, state-owned barrier island that balances conserving and preserving natural, historic, and cultural resources with providing accessible, affordable recreation, vacation, and education opportunities for the people of Georgia and beyond” (Jekyll Island Authority, 2014b, p. 4). The JIA has reported approximately 1 million people visit the island annually (Jekyll Island Authority, 2015). As such, tourism is instrumental to Jekyll Island’s economy, and that tourism contributes to the overall economy …

Nationwide Permit 12 And Domestic Oil Pipelines: An Incompatible Relationship?, Alexander S. Arkfeld
Nationwide Permit 12 And Domestic Oil Pipelines: An Incompatible Relationship?, Alexander S. Arkfeld
Washington Law Review
As climate change’s momentum becomes increasingly more difficult to quell, environmentalists are litigating to stop oil pipeline expansion. Litigation over two recently completed oil pipelines—the Flanagan South and the Gulf Coast—illustrates the legal battle environmentalists face. Given the outcome of those cases, it may seem that environmentalists face insurmountable judicial precedent. But they are not out of options quite yet. Although no statute expressly requires the federal government to conduct environmental analysis of proposed domestic oil pipelines, two statutes—the Clean Water Act (CWA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)—generally work in tandem to require the U.S. Army Corps of …
The Blight Of The Bumblebee: How Federal Conversation Efforts And Pesticide Regulations Inadequately Protect Invertebrate Pollinators From Pesticide Toxicity, Emily Helmick
Journal of Food Law & Policy
This article explores the Endangered Species Act's conservation efforts towards the Rusty-Patched Bumblebee as a case study that highlights the gaps in protections afforded to invertebrate pollinators. It focuses on how the law does not adequately protect endangered invertebrate pollinators from inadvertent pesticide poisoning and introduces the threat that this poses to our food system.
Towards A Better Understanding Of The Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Plant Development And Stress Response, Peipei Wu
All Dissertations
The spectacular array of diverse plant forms as well as the predominantly sessile life style of plants raises two questions that have been fascinating to scientists in the field of plant biology for many years: 1) how do plants develop to a specific size and shape? 2) how do plants respond to environmental stresses given its immobility?
Plant organ development to a specific size and shape is controlled by cell proliferation and cell expansion. While the cell proliferation process is extensively studied, the cell expansion process remains largely unknown, and can be affected by several factors, such as cell wall …
Differences In Heterospecific Pollen Deposition Across Pollination Syndromes In The Monteverde Area, December 2017, Kara Powell
Differences In Heterospecific Pollen Deposition Across Pollination Syndromes In The Monteverde Area, December 2017, Kara Powell
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Pollination is an important ecosystem service, increasing the ability of plants to adapt to changing environments through the process of sexual reproduction. The efficiency of pollination can be reduced due to the transfer of heterospecific pollen, which is pollen from another species. Flower characteristics vary in order to attract certain types of pollinators. This phenomenon is classified in groups of flower morphology characteristics known as pollination syndromes. Little research exists that summarizes heterospecific pollen transfer within these pollination syndromes. I investigated pollen deposition across pollination syndromes in Monteverde, Costa Rica in two different sites: San Gerardo and Curi Cancha. I …
This paper is part of our research project on the analysis of social practices as they appear in the framework of literary works, notably in narrative prose. This does not consist in undertaking a thematic approach of these, but rather considering them as the fourth level of immanence and relevance of the plan of semiotic expression. Therefore, the study is part of the rhetoric of downward integration that occurs when a higher level of immanence occurs at a lower level, like here where practices (4th level) occur in fiction text (2nd level). In this respect, is considered as “ritual practice” …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Following myocardial infarction (MI), overactive inflammation remodels the left ventricle (LV) leading to heart failure coinciding with reduced levels of 15-epi-Lipoxin A4 (15-epi LXA4). However, the role of 15-epi LXA4 in post-MI acute inflammatory response and resolving phase is unclear. We hypothesize that liposomal fusion of 15-epi-LXA4 (Lipo-15-epi-LXA4) or free 15-epi-LXA4 will expedite the resolving phase in post-MI inflammation. 8 to 12-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to permanent coronary artery ligation. Lipo-15-epi-LXA4 or 15-epi-LXA4 (1 μg/kg/day) was injected 3 hours post-MI for (d)1 or continued daily till d5. 15-epi-LXA4 activated formyl peptide receptor (FPR2) and GPR120 on alternative macrophages …

This paper presents an acoustic archival tag capable of tracking small marine animals. It is also a technology that can be ported to other platforms, such as the next-generation acoustic and Argo floats as well as gliders. Tracking is achieved by standard RAFOS triangulation using the arrival times of unique sound signals emitted by moored sources. At the core of the tag is a custom microchip that controls all system operations. It incorporates the critical acoustic arrival time detector, a thermal sensor, and a pressure sensor interface. All the electronic components are housed inside a cylindrical hydrophone of 25.4-mm length …

Developing A Digital Contents Valuing Model: How Users Appreciate Their Values, Changsu Kim, Jongheon Kim
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The principal objective of this paper was to propose and verify a digital content valuing model, which is expected to perform a significant role in future research, and provide novel and practical implications. For the efficacy of a model for the evaluation of digital content value, this study reviewed digital content value and categorized it into intrinsic, interaction, and business value. Based on the research model, we attempted to identify and assess the effects of intrinsic digital content value on digital content interaction value, and to characterize the relationship between digital content interaction value and digital content business value. Consequently, …
Repeated Observations Of Northern Goshawks Foraging As Terrestrial Predators, Robert A. Miller
Repeated Observations Of Northern Goshawks Foraging As Terrestrial Predators, Robert A. Miller
Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations
The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis; hereafter goshawk) is a generalist predator occupying boreal and temperate forests of the Holarctic (Squires and Reynolds 1997). The diet of goshawks has been studied in many areas and varies substantially among study sites, but some avian and mammalian genera are consistently represented (Squires and Reynolds 1997, Squires and Kennedy 2006). Within the northern Great Basin of North America, the breeding-season diet of goshawks is often dominated by Belding's ground squirrels (Urocitellus beldingi, also known as Spermophilus beldingi; Younk and Bechard 1994, Miller et al. 2014). The local reliance upon …

“All Students Are Brilliant”: A Confession Of Injustice And A Call To Action, Amy D. Robertson, Leslie J. Atkins Elliott
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
The two of us (AR and LAE), in our teaching, research, and work with teachers, advocate for responsive teaching—an approach that seeks out and builds on the productive “seeds of science” in what our students say and do and assumes that “all students…are brilliant.” This pedagogical approach requires a commitment to listening to and intellectually empathizing with students’ scientific ideas.
Human-Bear Interactions Among Black Bears In Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, And Polar Bears On Alaska's North Slope, Wesley G. Larson
Human-Bear Interactions Among Black Bears In Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, And Polar Bears On Alaska's North Slope, Wesley G. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
Human-bear interactions are an important consideration of bear biology, as interactions can lead to destruction of property as well as injury or death for both human and bear. Successful analysis of why these interactions occur can lead to appropriate preventative measures and mitigation of further conflict. Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA) is comprised of relatively poor bear habitat, but a black bear population exists on the Paunsaugunt Plateau, on which the park occupies the eastern edge. Park managers expressed interest in learning more about bear movements and, specifically, bear use of anthropogenic features following a number of human-bear incidents located …

Species Are Not Most Abundant In The Centre Of Their Geographic Range Or Climatic Niche, Tad Dallas, Robin R. Decker, Alan Hastings
Faculty Publications
© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/CNRS The pervasive idea that species should be most abundant in the centre of their geographic range or centre of their climatic niche is a key assumption in many existing ecological hypotheses and has been declared a general macroecological rule. However, empirical support for decreasing population abundance with increasing distance from geographic range or climatic niche centre (distance–abundance relationships) remains fairly weak. We examine over 1400 bird, mammal, fish and tree species to provide a thorough test of distance–abundance relationships, and their associations with species traits and phylogenetic relationships. We failed to detect consistent …

© 2017 American Society for Investigative Pathology Failure to replace Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccines with efficacious anti-tuberculosis (TB) vaccines have prompted outside-the-box thinking, including pulmonary vaccination to elicit local immunity. Inhalational MtbΔsigH, a stress-response–attenuated strain, protected against lethal TB in macaques. While live mycobacterial vaccines show promising efficacy, HIV co-infection and the resulting immunodeficiency prompts safety concerns about their use. We assessed the persistence and safety of MtbΔsigH, delivered directly to the lungs, in the setting of HIV co-infection. Macaques were aerosol-vaccinated with ΔsigH and subsequently challenged with SIVmac239. Bronchoalveolar lavage and tissues were sampled for mycobacterial persistence, pathology, and immune …
