Analog Circuit Design Knowledge Mining And Circuit Causal Information Modeling, Fanshu Jiao
Analog Circuit Design Knowledge Mining And Circuit Causal Information Modeling, Fanshu Jiao
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis proposes novel approaches for analog circuit design knowledge mining and circuit causal information modeling. In particular, knowledge mining discovers and decomposes analog circuit design knowledge into three components: (1) a conceptual hierarchy for a group of circuit topologies, (2) circuits' performance capabilities (including trade-offs and bottlenecks), and (3) circuits' design causal reasoning strategies. Causal reasoning strategies lead to the development of reasoning-based topology synthesis and design verification, thus bring new perspective to existing approaches. Extended from performance capabilities, the thesis proposes circuit causal information modeling, which models relations of parameters deciding circuit performance attributes and coupling with other …

Part 1. A Study On Delay Tolerant Network Algorithm For Vanet Part 2. An Efficient Mu-Mimo Precoding Operation With Zf And Mmse, Taek Keun Lyu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Part 1. In this paper, we learn how to select the Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) routing protocols according to dynamic network environment in wireless ad hoc network. Basically, providing access to the Internet or other network services with low mobile density is quite difficult for disconnection and long delay. One of the solutions in this problem is using Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) with DTN. There are a variety of DTNs, relying on the different network environment. We categorize the DTNs routing protocols. Also, we use simulations to compare that DTN routing protocols lead to reduce end-to-end delay and higher message …
Investigating The Tolerance Of Wirelessly Powered Charge-Recycling Logic To Power-Clock Phase Difference Deviations, Sushil Panda
Investigating The Tolerance Of Wirelessly Powered Charge-Recycling Logic To Power-Clock Phase Difference Deviations, Sushil Panda
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Internet-of-things (IoT) has emerged as an exciting application domain for semiconductor electronics. Recently, a new circuit design framework has been developed where charge-recycling circuits were leveraged to wirelessly power IoT based devices. Most of the existing charge-recycling circuits require multiple AC signals (referred to as power-clock signals) with certain phase difference to operate. The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the tolerance of wirelessly powered charge-recycling circuits to non-ideal phase differences among power-clock signals. The operation principle of the most common charge-recycling (also referred to as adiabatic) circuits is described. The power consumed by efficient charge recovery logic …
Investigation Of The Series Connection Of Silicon Photomultipliers For Reduced Noise Readout In Cryogenic Environments, Eric Raguzin
Investigation Of The Series Connection Of Silicon Photomultipliers For Reduced Noise Readout In Cryogenic Environments, Eric Raguzin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are devices capable of achieving the single photon resolution required over the large area $(4 \ m^2)$ required for the next Enriched Xenon Observatory (nEXO) experiment. In addition, SiPMs function with lower noise at cryogenic temperatures in the range that will be used in the full scale experiment, demonstrating a significant drop in the noise of the sensor. nEXO requires a large photosensitive area inside the time projection chamber (TPC) due to the increased mass of Xenon expected when compared with the previous EXO experiment. Practically implementing a photosensitive area of this scale requires consolidation of multiple …
Investigations Of Electronic And Optical Sources In The Mid Infrared And Terahertz Regions, Thakur Siddharth Singh
Investigations Of Electronic And Optical Sources In The Mid Infrared And Terahertz Regions, Thakur Siddharth Singh
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Fundamental sources of mid-infrared and terahertz radiation are of the utmost importance for applications such as chemical sensing, molecular spec- troscopy, imaging and telecommunications to name a few. Practical realiza- tions of room temperature fundamental sources in the terahertz region are often hampered by low power and poor temperature performance and this is referred to as the Terahertz gap. This work presents investigations of Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCL) as optical sources of mid-infrared radiation and the proposal of a novel electronic oscillator in the extremely important terahertz region based on a single layer of a suspended graphene sheet. Monte Carlo …

Sequential Monte Carlo Methods For Inference And Prediction Of Latent Time-Series, Inigo Urteaga
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In the era of information-sensing mobile devices, the Internet-of-Things and Big Data, research on advanced methods for extracting information from data has become extremely critical. One important task in this area of work is the analysis of time-varying phenomena, observed sequentially in time. This endeavor is relevant in many applications, where the goal is to infer the dynamics of events of interest described by the data, as soon as new data-samples are acquired. This dissertation is on novel methods for sequential inference and prediction of latent time-series. We assume that a sequence of observations is a function of a hidden …
Design Of A Novel Glitch-Free Integrated Clock Gating Cell For High Reliability, Tasnuva Noor
Design Of A Novel Glitch-Free Integrated Clock Gating Cell For High Reliability, Tasnuva Noor
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A novel glitch-free integrated clock gating (ICG) cell is developed and demonstrated in 45 nm CMOS technology. The proposed cell is more reliable as it produces an uninterrupted gated clock signal in cases where glitches occur in the enable signal during clock transitions. A detailed comparison of the proposed cell with the existing integrated clock gating cells is also presented. Glitch-free operation (and therefore high reliability) is achieved at the expense of larger power and delay, as quantified for 45 nm CMOS technology. Several design issues and different glitch characteristics are also discussed. The proposed ICG cell is shown to …
Turned On: A Study Of Sexuality In American Counterculture Music, 1960-2016, Sean Burton
Turned On: A Study Of Sexuality In American Counterculture Music, 1960-2016, Sean Burton
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Since the 1960s the American counterculture has been stoked by socio-political and lifestyle movements with a mix of noble ideas, rebellious fervor, and at times even a degree of madness. These movements have correctly been attributed to events worthy of protest and activism, such as the Vietnam War, racial injustice, sexism, and economic inequality, as well as less noble and less developed concerns. However, the power of counterculture music is that it links these causes to a much more universal element of life: sexuality. From the outlandishness of the music of the 1960s, came the trend of sexuality being part …
Retellings And Counterfactual Narratives: The Possibilities Of Twentieth- And Twenty-First-Century British Literature, Emma Brinkmeyer
Retellings And Counterfactual Narratives: The Possibilities Of Twentieth- And Twenty-First-Century British Literature, Emma Brinkmeyer
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines the counterfactual – the consideration of “what might have been†– as a key political, ethical, and aesthetic tool of the literature of modernism. As an imagining of other possibilities than what came to pass, the counterfactual unveils alternative spaces and times that lie outside of traditional narrative structure. I establish that counterfactual time is an empowering political and ethical space. Beginning with an extended discussion of James Joyce’s Ulysses, I show how counterfactual thinking challenges the discursive power of historical narrative and thus enables the expression of marginalized or silenced histories and experiences. In doing so, …
Willful Forgetting: €Œwhite Indians,€ Trauma, And Relationality In American Historical Literature, Kathleen Hankinson
Willful Forgetting: €Œwhite Indians,€ Trauma, And Relationality In American Historical Literature, Kathleen Hankinson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This work proposes a critical vocabulary for the study of American historical literature and Native American literature in the light of the genocide of Native America. Considering this genocide in terms of trauma theory (including perpetrator trauma) and relationality theory, it becomes clear that a “working-through†for the non-native postgenerations who have unintentionally inherited stolen lands (along with a self/other construction of non-Native and Native Americans) is ethically and socially desirable. In transcending the dominant self/other paradigm, one’s orientation to US American and Native American historical literature is not about possessing knowledge of these histories and literatures, but rather knowing …
The Music Of Romantic Poetry And The Mediation Of Romanticism, Matthew J. Gilbert
The Music Of Romantic Poetry And The Mediation Of Romanticism, Matthew J. Gilbert
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In the poetry of British Romanticism, “music†has a significance that stretches across versification, figurative conceits, rapidly evolving generic modes, song lyrics, the cultural practice of music, impassioned recitation, the conspicuous silence of print, and the sale of printed books—in other words, an interrelated spectrum of issues that reaches through formalism to historicism and beyond. Music’s relevance to various romantic cultures, as well as its many tropes and topoi, mirrors a conceptual versatility that poets found abundantly instrumental when sitting down (or walking along) to contemplate the relation of self and craft, craft and culture, and, above all, sound and …
Recapturing Camelot: Nostalgia For The Failed Ideals Of Arthurian Legend, Katherine Marie Miscavige
Recapturing Camelot: Nostalgia For The Failed Ideals Of Arthurian Legend, Katherine Marie Miscavige
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines nostalgia for the ideals of King Arthur’s court as represented in medieval versions of Arthurian legend. Nostalgia has typically been considered a modern phenomenon and has often been disparagingly associated with sentimentality or strict conservatism; however, this project aims to show that nostalgia can be a useful critical framework for understanding medieval approaches to romance, particularly the retellings of familiar tales like the stories of King Arthur and his knights. Using a chronological study of significant medieval Arthurian retellings, I argue that both the ideals themselves and the sense of nostalgia evoked are malleable and dependent on …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
As You Like It and Hamlet have as a central consideration the need for the restoration of order and the establishment of good governance. A comparative analysis of the roles of the clowns in both plays, using primary and secondary data, reveals that they expose a corrupt political directorate and offer social and political commentary through dialogue, soliloquies, asides and other forms of direct communication with the audience. As You Like It is a romantic comedy in which the usurping Duke causes the courtiers to flee from tyranny by going into exile in the forest of Arden. Touchstone, the jester, …
The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet | The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet, Kara Palumbo
The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet | The Role Of Christian Doctrine In Shakespeare’S Hamlet, Kara Palumbo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The following work analyzes Shakespeare’s use of Christian doctrine in his 17th century drama, Hamlet. The focus is to see how and for what reasons Shakespeare used his knowledge of Christian texts to construct Hamlet’s dialogue and setting. This research draws mainly from Shakespeare’s primary sources, the Geneva Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. Observing Hamlet through a biblical lens brings to light topics such as, the existence of purgatory and the rites of passage to heaven or hell. Taking into consideration Shakespeare’s contemporary society, views on topics such as purgatory, suicide, and confession, would have been mixed. Therefore, …

From Text To Screen: John Green And The Rise Of Digital Literacy, Jessica Pond
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Social media is rapidly becoming more prevalent in modern society. Businesses, politicians, and educators are using social media as an increasingly important tool of communication and information. In my thesis, I examine the implications of the growing importance of social media on young adult authors and the way that literacy is perceived. While social media is often seen as existing purely for entertainment, many educational professionals are bringing aspects of social media into classrooms as instructive and informational tools. Through close examination of the works of John Green and his activities on social media, this thesis addresses the ways in …
Traumedy: Dark Comedic Negotiations Of Trauma In Contemporary American Literature, Benjamin Nathan Schachtman
Traumedy: Dark Comedic Negotiations Of Trauma In Contemporary American Literature, Benjamin Nathan Schachtman
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This project explores how dark comedy negotiates between varying and paradoxically conflicting reactions to traumatic experience. These reactions unfold in two ways: the specific moments of “punctual trauma†and the “structural traumas,†wherein illusory structures of the ego – including sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and the sense of immortality – are dissembled and deconstructed. Thus, the traumas represented – in novels by Joseph Heller, Gustav Hasford, Gore Vidal, Chuck Palahniuk, Gary Shteyngart, Thomas King, and Robert Coover; films by Mike Nichols, Stanley Kubrick, and David Fincher – concern characters facing a seemingly oppositional choice between “witnessing,†providing “testimony†about the …
Operating In A Fallen Vehicle: How The Corrupted Language Of Paradise Lost Serves Milton's God, Steven Telano
Operating In A Fallen Vehicle: How The Corrupted Language Of Paradise Lost Serves Milton's God, Steven Telano
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This essay explores the significance of Milton’s use of poetic language, the cultural byproduct of what would be considered fallen language, in Paradise Lost as a means to highlight God’s uniqueness from the other beings of the poem, including the Speaker, and thus bolstering his goal to justify the ways of God to man. By looking at all of the different beings in this poem as existing in a hierarchical structure, it becomes apparent that the further a being exists away from God, who exists as the purest being of the hierarchy and is therefore placed at the top, the …

Margery Kempe: A Mirror Of Change In Late-Medieval England, Janet Tuthill
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Often considered the earliest autobiography written in English, The Book of Margery Kempe expresses social and religious commentary. This dissertation discusses Kempe’s life story as it mirrors the religious and social changes occurring in late-medieval England. I view Margery Kempe as a real person who was very involved in the production of her book, that the scribes who assisted her played an important part in shaping the text, but that we mainly hear Kempe’s voice. My view is that the work is neither a straightforward presentation of lived experience nor pure fiction, but based upon the real-life experiences of an …
Queen Victoria's Shadows, Anthony Teets
Queen Victoria's Shadows, Anthony Teets
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation discusses how Victorian writers, artists, and critics represent historical queens as shadows of Queen Victoria throughout her long reign (1837-1901). Focusing on Victorian representations of four queens—Catherine de Medici, Mary Stuart, Queen Elizabeth I, and Marie-Antoinette—this project seeks to establish a literary genealogy by showing how British writers drew upon historical interpretations of dead French and English queens to express psychological ambivalence, political anxiety about female monarchy, national, confessional difference, and complex sexual and erotic dimensions. Rather than approach these queens as historical persons, this dissertation concentrates on the literary, figural, and spectral qualities that translate unevenly across …

Bone tissue engineering is a rapidly developing field of interest. Bone scaffold materials have several applications of great importance including the fostering of healthy bone tissue and the repair of bone defects both in-vivo and in-vitro. Ideal scaffolds should be biocompatible, biodegradable, and promote cellular interactions and tissue development, and possess proper mechanical and physical properties. nHAP-PLGA-Collagen is a novel synthesized block-polymer which has proved biocompatibility and mechanical properties. This thesis is focused on the degradation-controlling to fulfill the requirement of bone reconstruction and afterward digestion. The research focuses on internal and external factors which have effects on degradation time …
Monotonicity Properties Of Stochastic Kriging Metamodels And Related Applications, Bing Wang
Monotonicity Properties Of Stochastic Kriging Metamodels And Related Applications, Bing Wang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Stochastic kriging (SK) and stochastic kriging with gradient estimators (SKG) are popular approaches to approximate complex simulation models because of their ability to replace the expensive simulation outputs by metamodel values. Obtaining an accurate SK/SKG metamodel is highly desirable in practice. This dissertation studies the monotonicity properties of the mean squared error (MSE) of optimal SK and SKG predictors. In particular, we show that in both SK and SKG, the MSEs of the corresponding optimal predictors are non-increasing functions of the numbers of design points. Based on these findings, we design an adaptive sequential sampling approach to obtain SK/SKG predictors …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this dissertation, we describe a new continuity path introduced by X. Chen aiming to attack the existence problem of constant scalar curvature problem via a direct PDE approach. The path connects the solution of J-equation to the constant scalar curvature Kaehler metric. We will present various openness results about the continuity path. The openness at $t = 0$ is in fact a perturbation result from a solution of second order partial differential equation to a solution of a fourth order partial differential equation. | 44 pages
Mechanical Modeling And Analysis Of Human Motion For Rehabilitation And Sports, Paul Gonzalo Arauz
Mechanical Modeling And Analysis Of Human Motion For Rehabilitation And Sports, Paul Gonzalo Arauz
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Modeling and analysis of human motion is important in rehabilitation and sports. To understand functional movements, dynamics of joints, power requirements, and athletic performance, kinematic and kinetic models have to be developed to implement and assess rehabilitation techniques that are applied to unimpaired individuals and patients with movement disorders. In addition, mechanical models are required to evaluate and quantify athletes’ skills and performance, in order to reduce the risk of potential injuries. For many years, many research efforts have been presented in the field of rehabilitation and movement performance. This dissertation presents research in mechanical modeling and analysis of human …
A Data Driven Design Methodology For Ss Dyads And Its Application To Unified Synthesis Of Planar, Spherical And Spatial Linkages, Xin Ge
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This research deals with a general kinematic synthesis problem of how to generate the motion of a spatial platform subject to one or more spherical con- straints. Each spherical constraint can be modeled by a SS dyad, which is a spatial two-link kinematic chain connected by two spherical (S) joints. It defines a five-degree-of-freedom motion of the end link such that a point stays on the surface of a sphere. A spherical constraint degenerates into a plane constraint when the radius of the sphere becomes infinite. In this way, a plane constraint is considered as a special case of a …

Investigation In A Ocean Wave Energy Converter With A Flywheel, Jiakang Jia
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A wave energy converter with a flywheel has been investigated and three conceptual designs of power take-off system have came up of which the third generation conceptual design has been built as a prototype for test. Among variable types of wave energy converters, Salter's Duck can convert wave energy to mechanical energy with high efficiency up to 90%. Salter's Duck moves in two directions as waves come and a power take-off system should be designed connected with Salter's Duck for converting mechanical energy to electrical energy. Considering the intermittent energy input, a flywheel energy storage system is included in the …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In nature, most bacteria live in surface attached communities called bacterial biofilms. Community living is beneficial to the bacteria, as it offers heightened resistance to environmental stresses due to the production of a protective exopolymeric matrix. When the growth of a bacterial community reaches a certain threshold, some bacteria disperse to find new frontiers to occupy and repopulate. Bacterial biofilms can be beneficial as is the case with those found in our gastrointestinal tracks that help us digest food particles. However, biofilms can pose a major threat to human health when they are composed of pathogenic bacteria that cause chronic …
G-Alpha-Q Regulation On Cardiac Autophagy, Shengnan Liu
G-Alpha-Q Regulation On Cardiac Autophagy, Shengnan Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Receptors that activate the heterotrimeric G protein Gαq are thought to play a role in the development of heart failure. Dysregulation of autophagy occurs in some pathological cardiac conditions including heart failure, but whether Gαq is involved in this process is unknown. A cardiomyocyte-specific transgenic mouse model of inducible Gαq activation (termed GαqQ209L) was used to address this question. Autophagy is a quality control and recycling process in which double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes enclose intracellular materials and send them to lysosomes for degradation. After 7 days of Gαq activation, GαqQ209L hearts contained more autophagic vacuoles than wild type (WT) hearts. …
The Role Of Protein Kinase C In Mammalian Target Of Rapamycin Signaling And Its Therapeutic Implications In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Mengling Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, which integrates extracellular and intracellular signals, plays a key role in cell metabolism, growth and survival; therefore, the proteins in the signaling pathway must be tightly regulated in order to maintain cellular homeostasis. Conversely, dysregulation of key components of mTOR signaling pathway leads to increased cellular growth and proliferation, which is implicated in many human cancers. Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine/ threonine kinases that regulate many cellular processes including proliferation and cell survival. It has been shown to regulate mTOR signaling in some human cancers. However, the mechanism …

Synaptonemal Complex Disassembly Activates Rad51-Mediated Double Strand Break Repair During Budding Yeast Meiosis, Evelyn Joann Prugar
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Meiosis is a highly conserved specialized cell division that occurs in many organisms, including budding yeast and mammals. Meiosis divides the chromosome number of the cell in half to create gametes for sexual reproduction. A single round of chromosome duplication is followed by two rounds of chromosome segregation, Meiosis I (homologs segregate) and Meiosis II (sister chromatids segregate). Proper segregation at Meiosis I requires that homologs are connected by both crossovers and sister chromatid cohesion. Crossovers are formed by the repair of double strand breaks (DSBs) preferentially by the homolog. The choice of repair template is determined at the time …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The bromodomain and extra-terminal (BET) protein BRD4 is a validated drug target in hematological malignancies, owing to its essential role in sustaining oncogenic transcriptional programs. To gain insight into the cancer-relevant mechanistic function of BRD4, I have investigated its mechanism of transcriptional activation in the MLL-fusion subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with experimental approaches including small hairpin RNA (shRNA) knockdown, clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas9 knockout, biochemistry, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq). In this study, I demonstrate that the AML maintenance function of BRD4 requires its interaction with NSD3, which belongs to a subfamily of …
