Evolution Of Immiscibly Blended Functionalized Polymers With Respect To Cure Parameters And Formulation, Nicholas Walter Heller Dec 2016

Evolution Of Immiscibly Blended Functionalized Polymers With Respect To Cure Parameters And Formulation, Nicholas Walter Heller

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Powder coatings are becoming ubiquitous in the coating marketplace due to the absence of solvents in their formulation, but they have yet to see implementation in low-reflectance outdoor applications. This demand could be met by utilizing polymer blends formulated with low loadings of matting agents and pigments. The goal of this research is a thorough characterization of prototype low-reflectance coatings through several analytical techniques. Prototypical thermoset blends consist of functionalized polyurethanes rendered immiscible by differences in polar and hydrogen bonding characteristics, resulting in a surface roughened by droplet domains. Analysis of both pigmented and control clear films was performed. This …

Light-Induced Self-Assembly And Diffusion Of Nanoclusters, Wenxuan Lian Dec 2016

Light-Induced Self-Assembly And Diffusion Of Nanoclusters, Wenxuan Lian

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Novel methods to build multiple types of three-dimensional structures from various nanoscale components are the most exciting and challenging questions in nano-science. The properties of the assembled structures can be potentially and designed, but the development of such approaches is challenging. In order to realize such rational assembly, a tunable interaction medium is often introduced into the system. Soft matter, such as polymers, surfactants and biomolecules are used to modify the surfaces of the nanoscale building blocks. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands are known as polynucleotides since they are composed of simpler units called nucleotides. There are unique base pairing rules …

Novel Processing Of Ceramics With Polymorphic Control, Gagan Jodhani Dec 2016

Novel Processing Of Ceramics With Polymorphic Control, Gagan Jodhani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Polymorphism is an important phenomenon exhibited by many materials, including ceramic oxides. The availability of multiple structural configurations for the same chemical composition opens the pathway to a large number of phases with distinct properties. The formation of the crystal structures can be directly correlated to the processing temperature and/or pressure as well as the particle size for nanomaterials. This work focuses on the tailored synthesis of the desired polymorphs of binary and ternary metal oxides through nanoscale processes with emphasis on flame spray pyrolysis. Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) is a scalable nano-manufacturing process used for the synthesis of oxide …

Estimation Of Stable Distribution And Its Application To Credit Risk, Hua Mo Dec 2016

Estimation Of Stable Distribution And Its Application To Credit Risk, Hua Mo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

To capture the heavy tails and the volatility clustering of asset returns is always an important topic in nancial market. We studies two projects related to the Alpha Stable distribution and Classical Tempered Stable(CTS) distribution respectively which both have desired properties to accommodate heavy-tails and capture skewness in nancial series. (1) In the major part of the rst project, we introduce the algorithm of indirect inference method. By using the skewed-t distribution as an auxiliary model which is easier to handle, we can estimate the parameters of the Alpha Stable distribution since these two models have the same numbers of …

Interrogation Of Possible Imaging Conditions For Radiation Sensitive Metal Organic Frameworks In Transmission Electron Microscopes, Wei-Yu Pan Dec 2016

Interrogation Of Possible Imaging Conditions For Radiation Sensitive Metal Organic Frameworks In Transmission Electron Microscopes, Wei-Yu Pan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Although transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is extremely powerful at the characterization of materials on the nano- and atomic scales, the advantages introduce accompanying drawbacks. That is, high energy electrons offer the structural information while imparting radiation damage to the samples. Metal organic frameworks are a new class of materials that have potential applications in gas storage and catalysis. A direct imaging of their lattice structures is highly desired. However, these samples are extremely radiation sensitive. In order to characterize their structures, low-dose TEM need to be performed. To date, there is a lack of a systematic of radiation study of …

On The Fracture Toughness And Crack Growth Resistance Of Bio-Inspired Thermal Spray Hybrid Composites, Michael Murray Resnick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Nature has presented a remarkable bill of materials which show excellent mechanical properties. Among those which have been extensively studied are wood, bone, rocks, spider silk, nacre etc. Interestingly all of these materials are primarily known to have great fracture resistance and present excellent example of natural and layer-by-layer evolution of materials. These materials have inspired the current research society to synthesize new generation materials with mechanical properties beyond the conventional materials such as metal, ceramic and polymers. Nacre, one of the most researched natural materials, is present in particular sea-shells and shows a layered brick-and-mortar structure. Designing nacre-like structures …

Application Of Lattice Boltzmann Methods In Complex Mass Transfer Systems, Ning Sun Dec 2016

Application Of Lattice Boltzmann Methods In Complex Mass Transfer Systems, Ning Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is a novel computational fluid dynamics method that can easily handle complex and dynamic boundaries, couple local or interfacial interactions/reactions, and be easily parallelized allowing for simulation of large systems. While most of the current studies in LBM mainly focus on fluid dynamics, however, the inherent power of this method makes it an ideal candidate for the study of mass transfer systems involving complex/dynamic microstructures and local reactions. In this thesis, LBM is introduced to be an alternative computational method for the study of electrochemical energy storage systems (Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and electric double layer capacitors …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With exponential hike in greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of fossil fuels, advancing renewable energy technology is the best available answer to global demands of clean and green energy. Solar Photovoltaic technology, although implemented worldwide, has a large further scope of improvement to create a fully accepted solar-powered society. One such concept can be a DC based photovoltaic system, which enables the use of DC power directly from solar panels without incorporating inverters. This thesis is based on a system-level PV project, which evaluates a newly installed DC direct-coupled system which uses DC power for office LED lighting, in comparison …

Multifunctional, Chitosan-Based Nano Therapeutics: Design And Application For Two- And Three-Dimensional Cell Culture Systems, Giulia Suarato

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There is a constant demand for sensitive and effective anti-cancer drug delivery systems, capable of detecting early-stage pathological conditions and increasing patient survival. Recently, chitosan-based drug delivery nanocomplexes have shown to smartly respond to the distinctive features of the tumor microenvironment, a complex network of extracellular molecules, stromal and endothelial cells, which supports the tumor formation and its metastatic invasion. Due to biocompatibility, easy chemical tailorability, and pH-responsiveness, chitosan has emerged as a promising candidate for the formulation of supramolecular multifunctional materials. The present study focuses on the design, fabrication and characterization of fluorescently labelled, hydrophobically modified glycol chitosan nano-micelles …

Synchrotron X-Ray Topography Analysis Of Dislocation Line Directions In 4h-Sic Single Crystals, Jianing Yan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis presents a Synchrotron White Beam X-ray Topography study of dislocations in 4H- SiC single crystals. Basic introduction is given including the crystal structure and atomic arrangement, crystal growth techniques, and the dislocation types. The commonly observed dislocations, including Micropipes (MPs), Basal Plane Dislocations (BPDs), Threading Screw Dislocations (TSDs), Threading Edge Dislocations (TEDs), Threading Mixed Dislocations (TMDs), in 4H-SiC single crystals have been reviewed. Since the extensive application of SiC for power devices is limited by the presence of these dislocations, the minimization, and eventually elimination of these dislocations, have been a major impetus in both research and commercial …

Evaluation Of 4h Silicon Carbide And Gallium Nitride Crystals For Power Electronics & Lighting Applications, Xiaolin Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Silicon carbide is a promising semiconductor material with more preferable properties than the traditional materials like silicon dioxide and gallium arsenide. With large band-gap, high breakdown voltage, high thermal conductivity and good resistance in radiation environment, SiC is widely used in electronic devices especially under high frequency, high voltage and high temperature. Despite of its good properties, the application of SiC is limited by the growth of high quality single crystal boule, namely, the defects inside the SiC crystals have deleterious effects on the performance of devices made of it. In this thesis, the combination of techniques including Synchrotron White …

Fabrication Of A Novel Biosensor For Macromolecules Detection Through Molecular Imprinting Technique, Yingjie Yu Dec 2016

Fabrication Of A Novel Biosensor For Macromolecules Detection Through Molecular Imprinting Technique, Yingjie Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There is an increasing need for precise molecular detection as a diagnostic tool for early identification of diseases, pathogens, and abnormal protein levels in the body. Typical chemical analytical methods are generally costly, unstable, and time-consuming. Molecular imprinting (MI) technique, based on the “lock and key model†, could be a simple method to overcome those shortcomings. In this study, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was employed as a platform to fabricate MI biosensor for detection of macromolecules. I demonstrated that, when the monolayer was formed on a rough surface, this method was in fact templating molecules in three dimensions, and hence …

The Role Of Nanofillers In Polymer Nanocomposites, Di Xu Dec 2016

The Role Of Nanofillers In Polymer Nanocomposites, Di Xu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Polymer nanocomposites have been widely used in many fields. By introducing nanoparticles as fillers, researchers are able to get reinforced materials and new materials with novel properties, such as stronger mechanics, enhanced optical properties and improved conductivity. Though experimental techniques have rapidly advanced to enable better control of materials at atomic level, there is still a lack of a fundamental understanding of the dynamics and structure-properties relations in polymer nanocomposites. In this thesis, we use computer simulations to study the molecular structure and connections between microstate to macro properties of a variety of nanocomposites. Our goal is to understand the …

Manipulation Of Dna At Polymer Surfaces: Electric-Field Controlled Adsorption, Patterned Cutting And Stretching, Ke Zhu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Recent developments in next generation DNA sequencing and optical restriction mapping involve manipulation of DNA molecules on surfaces. Here we propose a novel method that can control the adsorbed DNA density on polymer surfaces by applying an electric field. The efficiency of deposition was optimized with respect to DNA concentration in solution, electric field type and electric field strength. Enhancement of adsorption density of greater than twenty-fold was found. In addition, DNA molecules are fragmented on a polymer surface by soft lithography. Several experimental conditions have been tested to optimize the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp fabrication and DNA cutting method. Fragmented …

The Frame Retardant, Mechanical Properties, Thermal Properties And Permeability Of Biodegradable Polymers, Xianghao Zuo Dec 2016

The Frame Retardant, Mechanical Properties, Thermal Properties And Permeability Of Biodegradable Polymers, Xianghao Zuo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Nano-particles are great additives to the thermal properties of the polymers, however, they sometimes have some disadvantages on the mechanical properties. The mixing of polymers and nano-particles such as cloisite clays, graphene, melamine polyphosphate and molybdenum disulfide, are mostly physical reactions between them. Therefore, the dispersion of the nano-particles inside the polymers is very important. As for the frame retardant of the polymers, the additives are used as three most important components during the mixing, i.e. the acid source, the carbonization agent (or char forming agent), and a blowing agent. The better the particles disperse in the polymer, the easier …

Molar Topographic Shape As A System For Inferring Functional Morphology And Developmental Patterning In Extant Cercopithecoids, Julia Mackay Winchester Dec 2016

Molar Topographic Shape As A System For Inferring Functional Morphology And Developmental Patterning In Extant Cercopithecoids, Julia Mackay Winchester

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

New imaging technologies are rapidly changing the nature of morphological data by making possible the creation and sharing of large samples of digital scan data, creating a need for high-throughput morphometric methods. A promising example of this can be found in morphological topographic analysis, a suite of algorithms for describing surface shape properties. Topographic methods have been used effectively to address dietary functional morphology of molars in a number of mammal radiations. These methods may be also useful for answering other questions concerning molar shape. Empirical models of mouse molar morphogenesis include predictions concerning molar shape variation that could apply …

The Making Of A Habit: The Moderating Role Of Construal Level On The Development Of Automaticity, Allison Marie Sweeney Dec 2016

The Making Of A Habit: The Moderating Role Of Construal Level On The Development Of Automaticity, Allison Marie Sweeney

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Through practice, erratic behaviors become consistent. Numerous daily actions, including health-related behaviors such as exercise, are guided by habits that function automatically. However, considerable variability exists in the time it takes for a new behavior to become consistent and automatic. To date, little research has examined why the speed of habit formation varies across individuals and situations. I tested whether focusing on the concrete procedures of action (concrete thinking) facilitates the development of behavioral consistency and automaticity more so than focusing on the abstract purpose of action (abstract thinking). In Experiment 1, I examined whether concrete vs. abstract thinking influences …

Institutional Change In Undergraduate Education At A Research University: The Stony Brook Undergraduate Colleges, Donna M. Di Donato

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This qualitative case study concentrates on the evolution of undergraduate education at Stony Brook University, with particular focus on the establishment and continuity of the Undergraduate College program. The Undergraduate Colleges represent the most broadly imagined undertaking in undergraduate education in Stony Brook’s history and, therefore, is a good case study for the exploration of the topic of institutionalizing change and programmatic persistence. The Undergraduate Colleges marked the first attempt to establish a formal introduction to Stony Brook as a research university to all incoming freshmen, involving both academic and student affairs components and, most importantly, faculty. Program architects contended …

Urbanization And The Formation Of Modern Nation-States In The Turko-Persian World, Can Ersoy Dec 2016

Urbanization And The Formation Of Modern Nation-States In The Turko-Persian World, Can Ersoy

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Formation of modern states has been studied by numerous scholars over the last four decades however, the particular role of urbanization in this process have received considerably less attention. The few existing works that do focus on this issue exclusively examine the European experience and explain the interaction between cities and emerging states within that historical framework. This dissertation examines socio-political dynamics of urbanization and urbanism in the Turko-Persian geography during the establishment of modern nation-states in order to identify the ways, in which the dynamics affected the ensuing state-society relations. For this purpose I conducted a comparative historical analysis …

Appropriating A People’S Movement: The Relationship Between Community Gardens And Gentrification In New York City | Appropriating A People’S Movement: The Relationship Between Community Gardens And Gentrification In New York City, Prita Lal Dec 2016

Appropriating A People’S Movement: The Relationship Between Community Gardens And Gentrification In New York City | Appropriating A People’S Movement: The Relationship Between Community Gardens And Gentrification In New York City, Prita Lal

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this dissertation, I study the intersection of community gardens with gentrification. In much of the gentrification scholarship, gentrification was studied from the macro level and was thought to result from changes in the housing market, hence being viewed as a top-down process in which the elite revitalized decaying urban neighborhoods by bringing capital into these areas and building higher end housing and services or was driven by consumer choices of privileged individuals (Smith 1979; Ley 1981). Some scholars maintained a connection between community gardens and gentrification, by insisting that gardens helped facilitate gentrification (Martinez 2010; Weissman 2012). I take …

At The Juncture Of Homonationalism And Homophobic Nationalism: Sexual Justice Organizing In Uganda And The Paradox Of Transnational Advocacy, Sasha Maria Rodriguez Dec 2016

At The Juncture Of Homonationalism And Homophobic Nationalism: Sexual Justice Organizing In Uganda And The Paradox Of Transnational Advocacy, Sasha Maria Rodriguez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 propelled Uganda to the forefront of global media. In its initial manifestation, the Bill threatened to penalize “aggravated homosexuality†with the death penalty. The media attention earned by the proposed legislation opened avenues for transnational cooperation and communication between US-based Human and LGBTI Rights organizations and Ugandan kuchus – a Ugandan identity that encapsulates various identities of same gender loving or gender nonconforming peoples. This project focuses on this transnational relationship as it interacts with the dynamic of organizing in the midst of a national project of sexual repression. This dissertation asks how kuchu organizing …

"Lost My Job, Found An Occupation:" Space, Networks, And Organization In Occupy Wall Street, Gianmarco Savio Dec 2016

"Lost My Job, Found An Occupation:" Space, Networks, And Organization In Occupy Wall Street, Gianmarco Savio

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

While scholars have separately analyzed the role of both networks and space in social movements, little attention has been drawn to their relationship. This dissertation draws from in-depth qualitative research on the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement in New York City in order to provide an insight into this relationship. The findings discussed in the dissertation suggest, in particular, that social movements’ internal networks and various uses of space have a mutually constitutive and interactive relationship—that different uses of space create, reflect, and reproduce social movement networks. The findings of the research are presented in three substantive chapters. The first …

Organizational Structure And Class: Examining Resilience In The Maoist Movement In India, Juhi Tyagi Dec 2016

Organizational Structure And Class: Examining Resilience In The Maoist Movement In India, Juhi Tyagi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

What causes armed movements to last? I address this question by taking up the case of the Maoist movement in India. Through an ethnographic analysis and interviews of 127 current cadre, surrendered militants and non-movement village members in 77 villages, over a period of twelve months in 2013-2014 in three districts in Telangana, India, as well creating and analyzing a database on Maoist incidents (2000-2012), I find that non-violent armed group organizing best predicted movement resilience. Although state and political economy variables formed a base for armed rebellion, organizational structures in the villages determined the presence and sustenance of armed …

Each Body Is A Strange Beach, Myda El-Maghrabi Dec 2016

Each Body Is A Strange Beach, Myda El-Maghrabi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

What drives not merely the individual but our society as a whole? How do we regard our own experiences, and, as an extension, how does that affect how we relate to the experiences of another? How do our individual motivations affect our societal motivations and vice versa? These core questions serve as the catalyst for my work. By developing artwork with this line of inquiry in mind, which includes research into contemporary as well as historic social criticisms, I come closer to finding answers to the questions that fuel my artistic practice. Throughout the process, I mine the many ways …

Excavation, Heather Marie Cruce Dec 2016

Excavation, Heather Marie Cruce

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

For the past three years, while an MFA student at Stony Brook University, I have pursued an intense study of sculptural work in the medium of ceramic. My goal was to create large-scale ceramic installations. Theses installations comprised of many ceramic pieces I meticulously sculpted and carved to reference the fragility, beauty and finite existence of the human body as it relates to earthly landscapes. My aim has been to imbue an exhibition space with a sense of reference and ambiguity, allowing the viewer of the large scaled installed work to experience the work independent of direction. I deliberately and …

Moving Mountains, Desert Sea, Victoria Hortensia Febrer Dec 2016

Moving Mountains, Desert Sea, Victoria Hortensia Febrer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

I consider the role of not just the act of painting and the act of remembering, but the sea, the desert, the wind, the salt, the earth, and the light in this process—the way that non-human elements exert their existence and connect us to history, time, and geography. I use the term “painting†broadly here, to consider any act of placing color onto a surface, which in my case includes the use of acrylic, red wine (vinography), and projected light. The primary manifestation of this investigation is a still ongoing series of over 400 paintings and vinographs of landmasses seen …

Live From Dripdropolis: Static, Remote Control & The Leftover Tv Dinners, Logan Edward Marks Dec 2016

Live From Dripdropolis: Static, Remote Control & The Leftover Tv Dinners, Logan Edward Marks

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The following details my work with found objects of the everyday, resulting mostly in the form of sculptural installation and also in two-dimensional imagery. A reutilization of unwanted materials gives new potential to seemingly worthless items. In an effort to positively contribute to our social and economic culture, I rebuild and compile these once-consumer goods into dioramic landscapes and architectural settings, as artworks. Through this reinterpretation and recycling of waste, a reflection on our behaviors and experiences is prompted from our own dealings and associations to items like tube televisions, broken records, concrete blocks, or wooden two-by-fours. Our role as …

Mentoring Women In Stem: A Collegiate Investigation Of Mentors And Proteges, Nicole Jeanne Leavey Dec 2016

Mentoring Women In Stem: A Collegiate Investigation Of Mentors And Proteges, Nicole Jeanne Leavey

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the United States lags behind that of other industrialized nations. Despite national efforts to enhance the quality of STEM education for students, progress remains elusive. Underperformance is evident in measures of outcomes, participation, and retention. In particular, inequity persists in the attraction and retention of women to STEM fields. Mentoring is heavily cited as a means to improve our national efforts to fortify STEM education. This research explores mentoring styles, gender preferences, and differential impact on outcomes. The results challenge conventional wisdom that women prefer and benefit from a style of mentoring …

An Ideal Woman: Feminism And Performance, Kristin Nicole Leadbetter Dec 2016

An Ideal Woman: Feminism And Performance, Kristin Nicole Leadbetter

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

An exploration of theatrical history, theory, and technique is a “triumvirate†that can “determine the value of any performance practice for an enlightened theatre†(Gainor 173). My thesis addresses the question of what it means to be a feminist performer, and overall theatre practitioner. Feminist critiques have often attempted to understand a technique best suited for women to practice theatre that is reflective of feminist ideals. My thesis begins by exploring specific examples of female representation in theatre and in society. It covers the patriarchal structure of society, the opinions held about women and their position, and their categorization into …

Palmitoylation Of The Nmda Receptor And Psd95 Utilizing Phosphopantetheinyl Transferases, Victor Chang Dec 2016

Palmitoylation Of The Nmda Receptor And Psd95 Utilizing Phosphopantetheinyl Transferases, Victor Chang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Signal transduction relies on the proper localization of proteins to properly transfer signals throughout the cell. The cell membrane serves as a vital interface for the proper localization of proteins. Posttranslational modifications cause proteins to become targeted to membranes. One such modification is palmitoylation, the addition of a palmitic acid to a cysteine of a protein. Within the neuron, a large protein complex called the postsynaptic density receives upstream signals at the synapse. Many signaling proteins within the postsynaptic density are known to require palmitoylation for proper trafficking and function. Two such examples are the N-methyl-D-Aspartate receptor (NMDAR) and Post …
