Forest Ecosystems Of Temperate Climatic Regions: From Ancient Use To Climate Change, Frank S. Gilliam
Forest Ecosystems Of Temperate Climatic Regions: From Ancient Use To Climate Change, Frank S. Gilliam
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
Humans have long utilized resources from all forest biomes, but the most indelible anthropogenic signature has been the expanse of human populations in temperate forests. The purpose of this review is to bring into focus the diverse forests of the temperate region of the biosphere, including those of hardwood, conifer and mixed dominance, with a particular emphasis on crucial challenges for the future of these forested areas. Implicit in the term ‘temperate’ is that the predominant climate of these forest regions has distinct cyclic, seasonal changes involving periods of growth and dormancy. The specific temporal patterns of seasonal change, however, …

Chemistry Faculty Research
This paper describes the design and synthesis of a conjugate (Q7R) comprising the synthetic host cucurbit[7]uril (Q7) linked to the fluorescent dye tetramethylrhodamine (TMR), and the characterization of its optical and guest-binding properties as well as its cellular uptake. Q7R was synthesized in two steps from monofunctionalized azidobutyl-Q7 and NHS-activated TMR. The fluorescence of Q7R is quenched upon guest binding, and this observable was used to determine equilibrium dissociation constant (Kd) values. Unexpectedly, the Kd values for guests binding to Q7R and to unmodified Q7 were essentially identical. Therefore, Q7R can directly report binding to Q7 without …
Human And Asinine Postures In Apuleius’ Golden Ass, Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Human And Asinine Postures In Apuleius’ Golden Ass, Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Classical Studies Faculty Research
This article examines the ways in which Apuleius’ Metamorphoses thematizes the contrast between the prone posture of the ass and the upright posture of the human. A long philosophical tradition, starting with Plato and Xenophon, argued that the human body was especially constructed for celestial contemplation, while the quadruped body was more suited for baser activities such as eating and sex. Physical posture thus becomes another way for Apuleius to emphasize the “unphilosophical” nature of Lucius-as-ass. Moreover, in Book 11, numerous references to celestial contemplation give the theme an ironic climax. Apuleius uses these celestial allusions, I argue, as further …

Effects Of Excess Nitrogen On Biogeochemistry Of A Temperate Hardwood Forest: Evidence Of Nutrient Redistribution By A Forest Understory Species, Frank S. Gilliam, Jake H. Billmyer, Christopher A. Walter, William T. Peterjohn
Peterjohn
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
Excess nitrogen (N) in terrestrial ecosystems can arise from anthropogenically-increased atmospheric N deposition, a phenomenon common in eastern US forests. In spite of decreased N emissions over recent years, atmospheric concentrations of reactive N remain high in areas within this region. Excess N in forests has been shown to alter biogeochemical cycling of essential plant nutrients primarily via enhanced production and leaching of nitrate, which leads to loss of base cations from the soil. The purpose of our study was to investigate this phenomenon using a multifaceted approach to examine foliar nutrients of two herbaceous layer species in one N-treated …

Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Castanopsis costata (C.costata) leaves were empirically used by people in North Sumatera, Indonesia, as an antioxidant dietary supplement. However, its pharmacological effect has not been scientifically explored. The purpose of this study was to identify the secondary metabolites and antioxidant activity of C. costata. The leaves were cold extracted with methanol. The secondary metabolites were determined using thin layer chromatography. Its antioxidant activity was investigated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The results showed that methanol extract of C. costata leaves consisted of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, anthraquinone glycosides, tannins and triterpenoids. The methanol extract of C. costata leaves showed comparable antioxidant activity …

The Role Of The Moral Theologian In The Church: A Proposal In Light Of Amoris Laetitia, Conor M. Kelly
The Role Of The Moral Theologian In The Church: A Proposal In Light Of Amoris Laetitia, Conor M. Kelly
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia recast pastoral decisions in terms of conscience and discernment and asked moral theology to do the same. Such a request invites reforms for moral theology, requiring a shift from the traditional role of the moral theologian as an external judge to a more personalist role as a counselor for conscience. This change entails prioritizing the process of discernment ahead of the definition of rules, specifying the place of the ideal in Catholic morality, and attending to the ethics of ordinary life.

Stein, Andrew King, Maria Petukhova, Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, Jordi Alonso, Evelyn J. Bromet, Giovanni De Girolamo, Koen Demyttenaere, Silvia Florescu
Internal Medicine, East Africa
Background: Unexpected death of a loved one (UD) is the most commonly reported traumatic experience in cross‐national surveys. However, much remains to be learned about posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after this experience. The WHO World Mental Health (WMH) survey initiative provides a unique opportunity to address these issues.
Methods: Data from 19 WMH surveys (n = 78,023; 70.1% weighted response rate) were collated. Potential predictors of PTSD (respondent sociodemographics, characteristics of the death, history of prior trauma exposure, history of prior mental disorders) after a representative sample of UDs were examined using logistic regression. Simulation was used to estimate overall …

Ethnicity And Poetry: A Systems Theory Approach To Contemporary African American And Mexican American Poetry, Antonio Paniagua Guzman
Theses and Dissertations
Given the ongoing ethnic transformation of the current society of the United States, contemporary sociologists have extensively studied ethnic relations from diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. Despite the vast sociological research recently developed, the literary-based methodological approach remains partially uncultivated. This study explores motivations and patterns of minority groups’ ethnic performance in contemporary poetry by analyzing inter and intra-group similarities and differences of diverse linguistic and cultural traits. From secondary data analysis, this study examines four hundred poems authored by forty contemporary African American and Mexican American writers experientially connected to the state of Texas. Grounded in systems theory, this …

Flipped Learning And Influential Factors: Case Analysis, Leping Liu, Darren Ripley, Angela Lee
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Flipped learning has been a focus of research to explore potential learning environments that may positively affect student learning. The key issue is whether or how educators design such a learning environment, and what might be the factors that educators need to consider when designing a flipped learning environment. The first part of this study presents a critical review and analysis on factors identified from the literature that may influence the success of a flipped-learning case. 216 cases selected from current literature were analyzed on seven factors (Overall Design, Design of Information, Design of Technology Use, Active Learning, Motivation, Special …

Where And How Wolves (Canis Lupus) Kill Beavers (Castor Canadensis), Thomas Gable, Steve K. Windels, John G. Bruggink, Austin T. Homkes
Journal Articles
Beavers (Castor canadensis) can be a significant prey item for wolves (Canis lupus) in boreal ecosystems due to their abundance and vulnerability on land. How wolves hunt beavers in these systems is largely unknown, however, because observing predation is challenging. We inferred how wolves hunt beavers by identifying kill sites using clusters of locations from GPS-collared wolves in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota. We identified 22 sites where wolves from 4 different packs killed beavers. We classified these kill sites into 8 categories based on the beaver-habitat type near which each kill occurred. Seasonal variation existed in …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: More deaths occur in African women from invasive cervical cancer (ICC) than from any other malignancy. ICC is caused by infection with oncogenic types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Co-infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) accelerates the natural history of ICC, and may influence the HPV type distribution. Because HPV vaccines are available, this malignancy is theoretically preventable, but the vaccines are largely type-specific in protection against infection. Data on specific HPV types causing ICC in African women is limited, and many studies utilized swab samples rather than actual cancer tissue. A previous study using archived, ICC tissue from …

Currently, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) uses the fourth reliable method. The goal of this research was to develop a tool that the most reliable method mentioned in the HSM could be used to perform life-cycle benefit-cost analyses. A spreadsheet program was built that performs the HSM's Part C Predictive Method for 11 different roadway segment types mentioned in HSM using Excel macros and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming. Intersections were not included in this spreadsheet program as …
James Tissot's And Emile Zola's Shopgirl:The Working Girl As La Parisienne, Elizabeth Pusey
James Tissot's And Emile Zola's Shopgirl:The Working Girl As La Parisienne, Elizabeth Pusey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues for the cultural space of late nineteenth-century Parisian shopgirls as a position of power. The shopgirls' role in society is an ambiguous position connecting fashion consumer culture, class divides, gender and identity perceptions, and the workspace. Using James Tissot's Femme à Paris series, specifically the image Demoiselles de Magasin, and Emile Zola's novel Au Bonheur des Dames as primary sources, I examine the role of the shopgirl as a liminal position within the definition of the iconic 'La Parisienne' woman. By looking at women's work and the role of shopgirls in the boutique and department store …
The Differences In Time To Stability, Foot Muscle Size, And Toe Flexor Strength Between Cheerleaders And Gymnasts, Kelsey Renee Garner
The Differences In Time To Stability, Foot Muscle Size, And Toe Flexor Strength Between Cheerleaders And Gymnasts, Kelsey Renee Garner
Theses and Dissertations
Context: There has been recent speculation that the intrinsic muscles of the foot may play a larger role in lower extremity control and injury than previously believed. Multiple studies have shown that certain intrinsic muscles increase in size and strength after transitioning to minimalist shoe running, theoretically decreasing injury risk. There are currently no studies that examine the effect that training barefoot has in other athletic populations. Objective: Our purpose was to compare the intrinsic and extrinsic foot muscle size and strength in gymnasts (who predominantly train barefoot) and cheerleaders (who predominantly train shod). Another purpose was to measure time …
Phataria Unifascialis Use Eyesight To Find Their Preferred Rock Location, December 2016, Erica Weed
Phataria Unifascialis Use Eyesight To Find Their Preferred Rock Location, December 2016, Erica Weed
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Sea stars living on the ocean substrate rely on multiple senses to detect touch, temperature, and chemicals in the water. They have rudimentary compound eyes similar to arthropod compound eyes on the tip of each arm. These eyes allow them to detect light and dark images and see in a wide range of directions. However, it is unclear whether sea stars use eyes in their environments, or if the ability to see influences sea star behavior. One species, Linckia laevigata, has been shown to rely on its eyesight to navigate back to its preferred reef location after being displaced. This …

Comparing Tardigrade Abundance And Diversity On Rock, Log, Live Tree, And Canopy In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2016, Lily Stander
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
This study surveyed the abundance and diversity of Phylum Tardigrada across four different substrates: rock, log, live tree, and canopy, in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Tardigrades are understudied micro-invertebrates that inhabit every biome on the planet. I collected twenty-eight samples, or 140 subsamples, by hand, soaked them in water for a minimum of four hours, and surveyed for tardigrades. I found and documented forty-five tardigrades. Ninety-one percent of tardigrades found were Class Eutardigrada, while the remaining nine percent were Class Heterotardigrada. Five genera were identified: Echiniscus, Pseudechiniscus, Macrobiotus, Paramacrobiotus, and Minibiotus. The canopy and live tree substrates produced equal abundance and …
The Effect Of Prey Danger Level On The Feeding Behavior Of Orchard Spiders, Leucauge Sp., December 2016, Chirag Govardhan
The Effect Of Prey Danger Level On The Feeding Behavior Of Orchard Spiders, Leucauge Sp., December 2016, Chirag Govardhan
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Predatory animals often need to consider the costs and benefits of an attack, so as to avoid getting bitten or stung. Orchard spiders, Leucauge sp., manipulate their orb-webs to detect prey that lands on their web and attack them accordingly. Generally, they bite prey to inject venom and may also wrap them in silk. This study investigated the behavioral sequences of orchard spiders when they were presented with highly dangerous prey (Atta sp. minima ants) versus low danger prey (Drosophila sp. fruit flies). I tested 60 spiders, which I classified by body size (to account for size of the spider) …
Edge Effect On Moth Richness, Abundance, And Potential Pollination Activity In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, December 2016, Christopher Cosma
Edge Effect On Moth Richness, Abundance, And Potential Pollination Activity In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, December 2016, Christopher Cosma
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to biodiversity, especially in tropical forests which house most of the world’s species. Edge effects are important considerations when investigating the impact of forest fragmentation on biodiversity, as they can lead to large, and often detrimental shifts in population, community, and ecosystem stability. The taxa-specific effects of forest edges are complex, highly variable, and poorly understood. In this study, I investigated the edge effect on moth richness, abundance, and potential pollination activity in a fragmented tropical cloud forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica by sampling moths with light traps at two different locations: in …
Anti-Predator Behavior Of Octopus Vulgaris, December 2016, Emily Miao
Anti-Predator Behavior Of Octopus Vulgaris, December 2016, Emily Miao
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Cephalopoda is a varied and unusual class that has occupied oceanic habitats all over the world for millions of years. One species in particular, Octopus vulgaris, or the common octopus has a nearly global range. Because of their soft bodies and lack of hard, protective outer covering octopuses are highly vulnerable to numerous predators. However, octopuses have evolved to compensate for this loss with a number of other anti-predator defenses, namely camouflage and substrate-hiding. Camouflage allows the octopuses to alter their appearance into a variety of colors, textures and shapes as they move through their environments, hiding in plain sight …
