Using a Pd/Xantphos catalyst system to activate a wide range of aryl bromides, this transient sulfide species can be effectively trapped and fed into a traditional Pd0/PdII catalytic cycle. Scope and limitations of the methodology are presented along with significant discussion of a competitive C–S bond activation by this catalyst system.

The informal food retail sector is an important component of urban food systems and plays a vital role in ensuring access to food by the urban poor. Yet, policy frameworks both to address food security and to govern the informal sector neglect informal retail in the food system and, as a result, the sector is poorly understood. This discussion paper argues that it is essential to understand the dynamics of the informal food retail sector, which is diverse in terms of products traded as well as the business models utilized. The paper attempts to identify the characteristics of the sector …

Review: Shakespeare’S Stage Traffic: Imitation, Borrowing And Competition In Renaissance Theatre. Janet Clare., Kelly Stage
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Shakespeare’s Stage Traffic is a fit title for Janet Clare’s investigation of Shakespeare and his theatrical environment. While her subtitle outlines the key practices that underpin her readings of Shakespeare’s plays, their co-texts, and their competition, the idea of traffic best encapsulates the complexity of the relationships that Clare charts. As she writes, Shakespeare’s Stage Traffic may enable “a more conjoined critical study of the plays of the early modern stage — one that will take into account the networks of influence, exchange, and competition of stage traffic that make up the matrix essential for talent to flourish” (267). Her …

Dermal Uptake Directly From Air Under Transient Conditions: Advances In Modeling And Comparisons With Experimental Results For Human Subjects, G. C. Morrison, C. J. Weschler, G. Bekö

To better understand the dermal exposure pathway, we enhance an existing mechanistic model of transdermal uptake by including skin surface lipids (SSL) and consider the impact of clothing. Addition of SSL increases the overall resistance to uptake of SVOCs from air but also allows for rapid transfer of SVOCs to sinks like clothing or clean air. We test the model by simulating di-ethyl phthalate (DEP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) exposures of six bare-skinned (Weschler et al. 2015, Environ. Health Perspect., 123, 928) and one clothed participant (Morrison et al. 2016, J. Expo. Sci. Environ. Epidemiol., 26, 113). The model predicts …
Understanding How Algorithms Work Persuasively Through The Procedural Enthymeme, Kevin Brock, Dawn Shepherd
Understanding How Algorithms Work Persuasively Through The Procedural Enthymeme, Kevin Brock, Dawn Shepherd
English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations
Procedure, when discussed in regards to rhetoric, and to “digital rhetoric” in particular, is framed overwhelmingly in regards to game play (and to video games most frequently). We argue that this view needs to be expanded if scholars of rhetoric are to realize how complex human-computer rhetor systems function in diverse contexts. Such systems do so through procedural enthymemes, which persuade audience agents to action through the apparent logic of a given system. Procedural persuasion occurs most often via strategies that facilitate the agent to assume an active role in “self-persuasion” in order to complete a given enthymeme. In …

The Black Death In The Medieval World: How Art Reflected The Human Experience Through A Macabre Lens, Shirley M. Carrade
The Black Death In The Medieval World: How Art Reflected The Human Experience Through A Macabre Lens, Shirley M. Carrade
Senior Theses
In the fourteenth century a devastating pandemic disease known as the Black Death was responsible for the tragic death of millions of Europeans. The wide ranging consequences affected Europe’s culture, religion, and economic stability. These consequences can be seen most directly in the visual arts, notably with the prevalent motif of images of the dead interacting with humans. This interaction between the dead and the living can be found in the famous Triumph of Death, by Francisco Traini (ca. 1350) and the Dance of Death, by Bernt Notke (n.d.). These paintings are just a few of the many examples of …

The We In Me: Exploring The Interconnection Of Indigenous Dance, Identity And Spirituality, Sara Moncada
Senior Theses
An extensive amount of scholarship exists today on Native American and Indigenous people within the realm of music and dance ethnography. Over the centuries research and observations have used these stunning and profound creative expressions as a means by which to document and theorize about the people, their histories, traditions, and ways of being. However, a tremendous amount of this scholarship is developed from specific forms and styles of expression, resulting in a kind of separation that arises from examining an individual dance or song tradition as a stand-alone inquiry. By dislocating individual forms from the overarching whole, we limit …

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health attitudes and behavior of students in the oral health curriculum in Australia and New Zealand. Materials and Methods: The Hiroshima University ‑ Dental Behavioral Inventory was administered to students in the first (year 1) and final years (year 3) of the oral health curriculum at Charles Sturt University in Australia and the University of Otago in New Zealand. A total of fifty‑two year 1 students and forty‑five year 3 students completed English version of the questionnaire in 2013. The responses were statistically analyzed by Fisher’s exact tests and …

The Shenzhen Activist Program`, Hyunggyu Kim, Jae Hyun Kim
Architecture Senior Theses
There is a gap between being an architecture student in western countries and working as an architect in underrepresented communities. Architect Teddy Cruz defines the role of an activist architect as "expanded mode of practice", and the task of "deigning the protocols or the interfaces between communities and spaces".
This thesis contends that architecture schools need to continue to embrace the widely-accepted norm of studios studying abroad and working in an international studio. Current study abroad programs tend to skew towards being touristic field trips and there is not a curriculum or programmatic investment in cultivating relationships between the visiting …

In my previous article, Racial Capitalism, I examined the ways in which white individuals and predominantly white institutions derive value from non-white racial identity. This process of deriving value from identity results from intense social and legal preoccupation with diversity. And it results in the commodification of nonwhite racial identity, with negative implications for both individuals and society.
This Article builds on Racial Capitalism in three ways. First, as a foundation, it expands the concept of racial capitalism to identity categories more generally, explaining that individual in-group members and predominantly in-group institutions—usually individuals or institutions that are white, male, straight, …

Voies/Voix Réflexives Du Discours Social Mortifère Dans L’Ombre De Baudelaire De Fabienne Pasquet, Lucienne J. Serrano

Fabienne Pasquet brings to life the tragedy experienced by Jeanne Duval in 19th century Paris. Duval is portrayed as the heir of Makandour, an initiator of the Haitian revolution, and as a seductive young woman celebrated by Baudelaire, who is painted and subsequently erased by Courbet at the poet’s request. Jeanne would then have but one desire: to recapture Baudelaire’s attention and her role of muse. As part of the games that characterized this rediscovered love, Baudelaire writes his poems on Jeanne’s skin with the help of a metallic quill and thus she unconsciously relives a forgotten past where the …
